For the closest music-first replacement for YouTube Music on Android, start with InnerTune. Its documented features include a searchable music library, background playback, offline caching and downloads, synchronized lyrics, and Android Auto. Choose InterTune or Euphony if you also want your own music in the same app; Spotube if cross-platform use and guest access matter; or LibreTube if reducing reliance on Google services is more important than having a full music-library interface.
These apps are open-source clients, not independent music catalogs: most still rely on an upstream streaming service, whose changes can affect playback or sign-in. The right choice depends on which trade-off matters most to you.

Which open-source YouTube Music alternative should you choose?
For an Android app organized around streaming music, InnerTune is the strongest documented starting point. If your priority is to combine streaming with music stored on your device, look first at InterTune or Euphony. The best fit depends less on a single “best” app than on whether you need a dedicated library, local files, privacy from Google services, or support beyond Android.
| App | Best fit | Local music | Offline playback | Notable limits or dependencies |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| InnerTune | A dedicated YouTube Music-style library, with Android Auto | Not stated in its F-Droid feature list | Caching and downloads are documented | Depends on YouTube, a non-free network service |
| OpenTune | A dedicated client with tempo and pitch controls | Not stated in its F-Droid feature list | Offline mode is documented | Depends on upstream streaming services |
| InterTune | One Android app for YouTube Music and your own music | Yes; local-music use is central to its description | Not stated in the available project description | Sign-in is optional; Android 7.0 or later |
| Euphony | Streaming plus local-library support and lyrics | Yes; local-library support is documented | Downloads are documented | Streams from YouTube Music through an InnerTube-based library |
| Spotube | Cross-platform use, guest access, and time-synced lyrics | Local playback control is documented | Downloadable tracks are listed | Depends on Spotify, a non-free service |
| LibreTube | Privacy-focused access to music videos and YouTube content | Not stated in its project description | Not stated in its project description | General YouTube frontend, not a full music-library client |
| NewPipe | One lightweight frontend for several services | Not stated in the project description | Not stated in the project description | The project describes the app as beta |
“Not stated” means the cited project description does not establish that feature; it does not prove the app cannot do it. Features and service compatibility may change over time.

For a quick shortlist, separate the apps by role. InnerTune and OpenTune are dedicated streaming clients with music-library features. InterTune and Euphony explicitly make room for personal music as well. Spotube is the cross-platform option, while LibreTube and NewPipe are broader YouTube-oriented frontends rather than documented one-to-one replacements for YouTube Music’s library.
What makes an app a good YouTube Music alternative?
A similar-looking player is not necessarily a similar music app. Check whether it can organize a library, find albums and playlists, work with your own files, and keep playing when the screen is off. Then weigh those conveniences against the accounts, services, and privacy trade-offs involved.

InnerTune’s F-Droid listing documents search across songs, videos, albums, and playlists, plus library management and personalized quick picks. OpenTune also lists advanced search and library management. Those details make them stronger candidates when you want to browse and maintain a streaming-music collection rather than simply play individual videos or tracks.
Look beyond search when comparing a music-first interface. Search across albums and playlists, library management, and personalized quick picks are useful for different tasks: finding a specific release, keeping a collection organized, and getting suggestions for what to play next. InnerTune explicitly lists all three. OpenTune lists advanced search and library management, but not personalized quick picks in its feature description.
Local files and streaming together
InterTune is presented as “YouTube Music and your own music, in one Android app.” Its official site says sign-in is optional, supports importing an OuterTune backup, and lists Android 7.0 or later as the minimum. Euphony also explicitly lists local-library support alongside YouTube Music streaming and offline downloads. For other apps in this comparison, the cited descriptions do not establish an equivalent local-library feature.
If you have a personal MP3, OGG, or FLAC collection, do not assume that a streaming client will scan or play every format simply because it mentions local music. InterTune and Euphony are the clearest options to investigate for local-library use, but the available feature descriptions do not specify supported file formats or a complete import workflow. Check the current app details and test a few files from your collection before moving your listening routine.

Open-source code and service independence are different things. An app can publish its source and still rely on a commercial streaming service to provide content. InnerTune depends on YouTube; Euphony streams from YouTube Music using the youtube_explode_dart library, which accesses the InnerTube API; and Spotube’s F-Droid listing identifies dependence on Spotify as an anti-feature. This means their playback or sign-in behavior can be affected by service-side changes.
LibreTube’s site says it does not use Google services, save user data, or use trackers. It is the clearest choice here when avoiding Google-service dependence is the priority, but it is a general YouTube frontend with subscriptions, playlists, SponsorBlock, and video chapters—not a documented replacement for a full YouTube Music album library. Spotube’s F-Droid listing says it has no telemetry or diagnostics and supports anonymous or guest login; it nevertheless depends on an upstream service.
Account needs are not identical across these projects. InterTune explicitly makes signing in optional, and Spotube documents anonymous or guest login. OpenTune lists integrated login, but that detail alone does not tell you whether login is mandatory for every feature. Check the current app’s sign-in flow and decide whether you are comfortable linking an account before relying on a particular playback or library feature.
Lyrics, car use, and other controls
InnerTune lists synchronized lyrics and Android Auto, while OpenTune lists synchronized lyrics, Android Auto, and tempo and pitch controls. Euphony lists lyrics sourced from LRCLIB. Spotube lists time-synced lyrics. These are documented feature claims, not independent tests: they do not establish that every track has lyrics or that every car, phone, or playback route will work.
Android Auto is specifically documented for InnerTune and OpenTune among these options. Do not infer support for casting from a general mention of media controls or background playback; casting is not established in the cited feature descriptions. If car playback, casting, or lyrics are essential, confirm the exact feature in the current release and test it with your device and the services you use.
Licensing, cost, and service trade-offs
Licenses help explain how the client software is distributed, but they do not make the streaming catalog independent or guarantee that a service will remain compatible. InnerTune is GPL-3.0-only, OpenTune is GPL-3.0-or-later, InterTune is GPL-3.0, Euphony is GPL-3.0-only, and LibreTube is GPL-3.0. The cited Spotube and NewPipe descriptions emphasize their service and feature details rather than establishing a license comparison here.
InterTune is described by its project as free, open source, and ad free; the other projects also document ad-free playback or open-source licensing as applicable. Those descriptions do not establish a universal price or subscription requirement for every service connection, so check current project and service terms rather than assuming that open-source means a particular catalog or account is free to use.

How do the main Android options differ?
The feature sets overlap, but the apps make different choices about library structure, local playback, and which upstream services they use. Use the details below to narrow your shortlist rather than assuming that every feature works identically across releases.
InnerTune: closest to a dedicated YouTube Music workflow
F-Droid describes InnerTune as a Material 3 YouTube Music client for Android. Its documented feature set includes ad-free playback, background playback, searching songs, videos, albums, and playlists, library management, caching and downloads, synchronized lyrics, silence skipping, audio normalization, dynamic themes, localization, Android Auto, and personalized quick picks. It is licensed GPL-3.0-only and depends on YouTube as a non-free network service.
Choose InnerTune if your priorities are a music-first collection, offline playback within the app, and car integration. Its listing’s feature set does not establish support for a local music library, so do not assume it will manage your own MP3, OGG, or FLAC collection alongside streaming.
Its additional listening controls can matter if you regularly encounter long quiet passages or uneven playback levels: the listing documents silence skipping and audio normalization. These are useful distinctions from a basic streaming frontend, though they are feature claims rather than a guarantee of a particular listening result. The same listing includes dynamic themes and localization for users who value interface customization.
OpenTune: another feature-rich dedicated client
OpenTune’s F-Droid listing includes ad-free and background playback, advanced search, integrated login, library management, offline mode, synchronized lyrics, silence skipping, audio normalization, tempo and pitch controls, Android Auto, and dynamic themes. It is licensed GPL-3.0-or-later.
Compare it with InnerTune if tempo or pitch adjustment is useful, or if you want to evaluate a second dedicated client. The listing establishes many overlapping music features, but it does not document local-library support in the available description.
OpenTune’s integrated-login listing detail is worth weighing alongside its library features: it differs from InterTune’s explicit statement that signing in is optional. That does not by itself prove that every OpenTune feature requires an account, so check the current release’s login behavior before you choose it on the assumption that it will be account-free.
InterTune: streaming and your own collection
InterTune’s official site describes a free, open-source, ad-free Android app for YouTube Music and personal music. It is GPL-3.0, supports Android 7.0 or later, and makes signing in optional. The site also describes importing an OuterTune backup, which may help people carrying over an existing collection setup.
Pick InterTune when keeping personal music and streaming together is the central requirement. The project description does not establish offline-download, lyric, Android Auto, or casting features, so verify those against the current release if they are essential to your setup.
The OuterTune backup-import detail is a migration convenience, not a promise that every setting, playlist, or piece of account data will transfer. If you are switching from an existing setup, keep the original backup and verify what imports before relying on the new app as your only copy of a collection configuration.
Euphony: streaming, local library, and LRCLIB lyrics
F-Droid describes Euphony as an open-source Flutter streaming client that streams from YouTube Music through the youtube_explode_dart library, which uses the InnerTube API. Its listed features include background playback and media controls, offline downloads, local-library support, lyrics from LRCLIB, customizable themes, regional feeds, and battery and bandwidth efficiency. It is licensed GPL-3.0-only.
Euphony is a practical shortlist candidate when local files and streaming both matter, and lyrics are a useful extra. Its listed efficiency features are project claims; no comparative battery or bandwidth benchmark is established here.
Its combination of offline downloads and local-library support makes it different from apps whose descriptions focus only on streamed content. Still, downloads should be understood as app-managed offline playback unless the project specifically says otherwise. The feature list does not say that downloaded tracks become ordinary audio files that can be exported to another player.

Spotube: cross-platform and guest access, with a service dependency
Spotube’s F-Droid listing describes a lightweight, resource-friendly client for desktop and mobile. It lists ad-free playback, downloadable tracks, cross-platform support, anonymous or guest login, time-synced lyrics, no telemetry or diagnostics, and local playback control. The same listing flags dependence on Spotify, a non-free service.
F-Droid lists version 5.1.2 as requiring Android 7.0 or newer; that version was added to the listing on June 9, 2026. Treat this as a version-specific listing detail, not a guarantee that a later release has the same minimum requirement. Spotube suits people who want to use an app across devices or try guest access, provided its upstream-service dependency is acceptable.
Spotube is therefore not the clearest choice for someone whose main goal is to remove every commercial streaming dependency. Its no-telemetry and guest-access claims address privacy and account friction, but the Spotify dependency remains an important service trade-off. Its downloadable tracks and synchronized lyrics are useful listed features; as with other clients, verify current availability and behavior for the tracks you actually use.
LibreTube: a privacy-focused YouTube frontend
LibreTube’s site says it uses no Google services, saves no user data, and uses no trackers. It is GPL-3.0 and ad-free, and lists SponsorBlock, video chapters, subscriptions, and user playlists. Those capabilities make it useful for music-video access and general YouTube browsing.
It is not documented as a full YouTube Music-style library app. Choose it for the privacy and frontend trade-off, not on the assumption that it offers the same album-oriented workflow as a dedicated music client.
That distinction matters if you want to browse albums, maintain a music collection, and use features modeled on a music service. LibreTube’s documented strengths are instead a Google-service-free YouTube frontend and general video-oriented features. Treat it as a privacy-minded way to access music videos, not as a complete substitute for every music-specific workflow.
NewPipe: several services in one lightweight frontend
The NewPipe project README says the Android app supports the YouTube and YouTube Music websites, as well as PeerTube, Bandcamp, SoundCloud, and media.ccc.de. It describes NewPipe as a private, anonymous experience and labels the app beta.
NewPipe makes sense if service variety and lightweight playback matter more than a deep, dedicated music library. Because the project labels it beta, approach it as a changing project rather than a finished substitute with guaranteed compatibility.
Recommended Free Tools
The multi-service list is its key differentiator: one frontend can cover several kinds of audio and video sources. That breadth does not establish the same album-library, offline, lyric, or car-integration features documented for the dedicated clients above. If one of those is essential, compare the specific feature rather than choosing solely by the number of supported services.
How do you install and maintain one safely?
Use the project’s official site, source repository, or F-Droid listing as the starting point, then check the current release notes and Android minimum version before installing. A listing’s feature set or version requirement can change, and the app may continue to work differently as its upstream services change.
- Choose an app based on the feature you need most. Decide first whether that is a music-first library, local files, privacy from Google services, cross-platform support, or multi-service playback.
- Open the project’s official page or its F-Droid listing. Confirm that the listing corresponds to the intended project and review the current release information rather than relying on an old version note.
- Check Android compatibility. Confirm your device meets the current minimum version. InterTune’s site specifies Android 7.0 or later; F-Droid lists that minimum for Spotube version 5.1.2, added June 9, 2026. Check the current listing for other versions and apps.
- Install and test the features that matter to you. Try search, background playback, lyrics, local-file access, or Android Auto as applicable before moving your main listening routine over.
- Review release notes if playback or sign-in changes. A service-side change can disrupt a client even when you have not changed your phone or app settings. Check for a project update and its compatibility notes before assuming your device is at fault.
What offline downloads mean
Where an app documents caching, downloads, or offline mode, treat those as app-managed offline playback. The available project descriptions do not establish that downloaded tracks are exportable as ordinary audio files, so do not choose an app on the assumption that its downloads can be copied into another player.
Offline support also does not mean every app has the same download workflow. InnerTune documents caching and downloads, OpenTune lists offline mode, Euphony lists offline downloads, and Spotube lists downloadable tracks. InterTune, LibreTube, and NewPipe do not have offline-download support established in the project descriptions cited here. If you listen without a connection often, test whether the app retains the content you need and whether it remains available in the way you expect.

- You want the closest documented music-first interface: start with InnerTune.
- You want pitch and tempo controls or another dedicated client to consider: compare OpenTune with InnerTune.
- You want streaming and your own collection in one place: start with InterTune or Euphony.
- You want synced lyrics and an app for desktop as well as mobile: consider Spotube, while accounting for its Spotify dependency.
- You want to avoid Google services: consider LibreTube, with the understanding that it is a general YouTube frontend rather than a full music-library app.
- You want one lightweight frontend for several services: consider NewPipe, remembering that its project labels it beta.
No independent comparison establishes that one of these apps is universally fastest, most reliable, or best for battery life. The available evidence supports feature-based choices, and upstream compatibility remains an important part of the decision.
If two apps appear to meet your needs, compare the practical constraints that are easiest to overlook: whether local files are explicitly supported, whether login is optional, whether downloads are listed, and whether your must-have feature—such as Android Auto or synchronized lyrics—is documented. Prefer the app whose current project page answers those questions clearly, then test it before making it your main player.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best open-source YouTube Music alternative for Android?
InnerTune is the closest documented dedicated YouTube Music-style option: its F-Droid listing includes search, library management, background playback, downloads, synchronized lyrics, and Android Auto. If personal music files are just as important as streaming, consider InterTune or Euphony instead.
Which app is closest to YouTube Music without Google?
LibreTube makes the clearest no-Google-services claim, but it is a general YouTube frontend rather than a full album-and-library music client. InnerTune offers a more dedicated music workflow but depends on YouTube, so the choice depends on whether service independence or music-library depth matters more.
Can I use these alternatives with offline downloads and lyrics?
InnerTune documents caching and downloads plus synchronized lyrics; OpenTune lists offline mode and synchronized lyrics; Euphony lists offline downloads and LRCLIB lyrics; Spotube lists downloadable tracks and time-synced lyrics. The listings do not guarantee that every track has lyrics or that downloads can be exported as ordinary audio files.
Which open-source music app works with my local files?
InterTune and Euphony are the clearest options: InterTune is presented as combining YouTube Music with your own music, and Euphony lists local-library support. The project descriptions do not specify support for every file format, so check the current app details and test your MP3, OGG, or FLAC files.
Can I use these apps without a Google account?
The project descriptions do not establish one universal sign-in requirement across every app or release. InterTune says sign-in is optional, and Spotube lists anonymous or guest login; check the current app’s sign-in flow before relying on account-free use.
Do these apps work with Android Auto or casting?
InnerTune and OpenTune list Android Auto support. The feature descriptions cited here do not establish casting support across the apps, so check the current release for the exact connection method you need.
Are the apps and downloads free?
InterTune is described by its project as free, open source, and ad free, and several other listings document ad-free playback. The descriptions do not establish a universal price or subscription requirement for every upstream service, and app-managed downloads should not be assumed to be exportable files.
Can I install two of these apps on the same Android phone?
In general, Android can have multiple music apps installed at once, so you can compare them without immediately replacing your existing setup. Each app may keep its own library state and downloads, however, and those do not automatically become shared between apps.
Are open-source streaming clients legal to use?
Open-source licensing governs the client software; it does not by itself settle the rights or terms governing streamed content. Laws and service terms vary, so use the services and content in ways permitted where you live.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why might a client stop playing after it worked before?
A client that relies on a streaming service can be affected when that service changes how playback or sign-in works. Check the app’s current release notes and project updates, and distinguish a service-compatibility issue from a problem limited to your network or device.
