The best open-source AI tool to run locally in 2026 depends on the layer you need. Choose Ollama when you want the simplest model runner, llama.cpp when you need low-level inference control, Jan for an offline desktop chat experience, or Open WebUI when you want a self-hosted interface that can sit in front of several backends. AnythingLLM, LocalAI, and vLLM address document workflows, API serving, and GPU-oriented deployments respectively.

These projects are not interchangeable, and there is no defensible one-to-seven performance ranking: available evidence does not provide a consistent benchmark or hands-on test across all seven. This guide therefore matches each project to a job, explains the hardware that limits local models, and shows how to check whether “local” really means local for your configuration.

What does “open-source local AI” actually mean?

A local AI stack has several layers. A model runner downloads, stores, and launches model files. An inference engine controls how those files are executed on a CPU or GPU. A desktop application adds chat, history, and settings. A self-hosted interface provides a browser front end and connects to one or more model backends. Treating every app as the same kind of product leads to poor choices and confusing privacy claims.

“Open source” also applies to the project, not automatically to every model it can run. Read the current repository license and commercial-use terms for the application, then read the model card and weight license for each model you download. A permissive runtime does not grant rights to redistribute or commercially use every set of weights.

Local execution means the prompt is processed by a backend running on your computer or your own server. It does not prove that the surrounding application never makes network requests. Interfaces can be configured for hosted APIs, update checks, telemetry, or remote extensions. Inspect the selected provider, endpoint, and privacy settings before entering sensitive material.

Which of the seven tools fits your workflow?

Start with the job rather than a popularity ranking. The table summarizes the role each candidate is best suited to, using only capabilities established in the available project descriptions.

Project Primary role Good fit when you need Main trade-off
Ollama Cross-platform model runner A straightforward way to download and run local models Less execution-level control than a dedicated inference engine
llama.cpp Configurable inference engine and server Fine control over local execution and integrations More technical setup and tuning
Jan Desktop chat application An offline-oriented graphical chat experience with an API option Verify its current platform matrix and license before deployment
Open WebUI Self-hosted interface A browser UI that can connect to Ollama or OpenAI-compatible APIs It is a front end; you still need and must secure a model backend
AnythingLLM Document-centered local AI candidate Workflows built around your own documents Check current local-model support and license details
LocalAI Local API-server candidate An API-compatible service for applications that should call a local backend Backend and model coverage change; verify current documentation
vLLM GPU-oriented serving engine candidate Serving workloads where throughput and deployment control matter Usually a better fit for technical or shared infrastructure than a casual desktop

Ollama: the accessible starting point

Ollama is the most direct choice when your priority is getting a local model running with minimal orchestration. Its official download page provides installers for macOS, Linux, and Windows: https://ollama.com/download. The same page distinguishes local execution from cloud models, so select the local path deliberately if prompts must remain on your machine.

Ollama handles model acquisition and launching for you, making it useful as a backend for a desktop client or a self-hosted interface. The trade-off is that a higher-level runner hides some scheduling and hardware details that an inference-engine user may want to tune. Model-specific licenses still need separate review.

llama.cpp: control at the inference layer

llama.cpp is an inference engine and server rather than a polished chat application. It is appropriate when you need to choose execution backends, adjust runtime parameters, or expose a local service to another application. Hugging Face lists it among the common ways to use models locally: https://huggingface.co/docs/hub/main/local-apps.

That control comes with a steeper setup cost. You must understand the model format, hardware backend, context settings, and server configuration you select. Verify the current official repository instructions and supported accelerators before committing to a deployment, because those details can change between releases.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jan: a desktop chat application

Jan targets people who want a graphical chat program rather than a command-line inference service. The local-apps documentation describes it as an open-source alternative that can run offline and expose an API. That makes it a practical fit for an individual who wants local conversations first and integration options second.

“Offline” should be read as a capability, not a blanket guarantee: you still need to download the application and model, and any optional hosted provider changes where prompts are processed. Check Jan’s own current license, operating-system support, and network settings before using it for confidential or commercial work.

Open WebUI: a self-hosted front end

Open WebUI is a browser-based interface and workflow layer, not a model. Its documentation describes connections to Ollama and to OpenAI-compatible APIs, including hosted endpoints: https://docs.openwebui.com/. You can therefore keep the interface on your own machine while choosing either a local backend or a remote provider for a particular workspace.

The project documents several installation routes, including Docker, pip, uv, and desktop options. Pick one route, then configure the backend URL and credentials explicitly. If an OpenAI-compatible endpoint points to a hosted service, the prompts leave your machine even though the Open WebUI process itself is self-hosted. Treat authentication, network exposure, and user permissions as part of the installation rather than afterthoughts.

AnythingLLM: a document-focused candidate

AnythingLLM appears in the current local-tool comparison as a candidate for document-centered workflows. That role is useful when the main task is asking questions over a controlled collection of files rather than having an unstructured chat. Before adopting it, verify which local model backends and document processors its current release supports, and read the project’s license and data-handling terms.

For a document deployment, plan the storage location, indexing process, and access controls in addition to model memory. A local model does not automatically make imported documents safe if the interface is reachable by other users or configured to call a remote embedding or generation service.

LocalAI: a local API-server candidate

LocalAI is listed as a candidate for serving models through a local API. That makes it more relevant to developers who want existing applications to call an endpoint on their own hardware than to someone seeking a ready-made chat window. Confirm the current backend matrix, model formats, acceleration support, and API compatibility in the project’s documentation before selecting it.

API compatibility is a useful integration shortcut, but it is not a promise that every parameter or tool-calling feature behaves identically to a hosted service. Test the specific client, model, and endpoint combination you plan to deploy, and keep the service bound to a protected interface unless remote access is intentional.

vLLM: a serving-engine candidate for capable GPUs

vLLM is included as an open-source serving-engine candidate for GPU-backed workloads. Its natural audience is a technical user operating a service for multiple requests, rather than someone who only wants a personal desktop chat. Verify current supported hardware, installation requirements, and license terms from the project source before treating it as a fit for your machine.

Serving software can make better use of a powerful accelerator under concurrent demand, but it introduces deployment work: process supervision, authentication, monitoring, model loading, and capacity planning. For one person on a laptop, a simpler runner or desktop app is usually a more appropriate starting layer.

How much RAM or VRAM do local models need?

Memory determines which quantized model sizes are practical, but the figures below are rough hardware-tier estimates rather than guarantees. They come from Libre WebUI’s hardware guidance, whose year is not stated: https://docs.librewebui.org/hardware-requirements.

Available memory Approximate model range Execution note
8 GB system RAM 1B–4B quantized models CPU-only use; expect lower speed than a suitable GPU
16 GB system RAM 4B–8B quantized models CPU-only estimate; other applications reduce headroom
8 GB VRAM 4B–8B models Useful when the model and runtime fit in GPU memory
12–16 GB VRAM 8B–14B models Actual fit depends on quantization and context allocation
24 GB VRAM 14B–32B models Leave capacity for runtime overhead and longer contexts
48 GB or more VRAM, or large unified memory 32B–70B experimentation Large-model use remains sensitive to architecture and workload

These ranges should not be read as a binary “runs” test. Model architecture, quantization level, context length, drivers, and concurrent workloads all change the result. A model can load yet generate too slowly for interactive use, or fail when a longer conversation expands the context.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

CPU inference remains viable for smaller models, but generation is generally slower. A discrete GPU can improve speed when the model fits in VRAM. Apple Silicon systems use unified memory, so the operating system and other applications share the same pool; the number printed on the specification sheet is not all available to the model.

Ollama’s official download page summarizes the practical constraint plainly: “Speed depends on the hardware. Large models are slow on a computer without a strong GPU.” That statement is from the product page accessed October 25, 2026, and should be treated as a general warning rather than a benchmark.

How should you install a local AI stack?

Use a layered installation plan so you know which component is responsible when something fails.

  1. Choose the role first. Select a runner such as Ollama, an engine such as llama.cpp, a desktop app such as Jan, or an interface such as Open WebUI. Add document or serving components only when your workflow requires them.
  2. Check the machine. Record system RAM, GPU VRAM or unified memory, operating system, free disk space, and driver status. Compare that capacity with the approximate ranges above, leaving room for the OS and context.
  3. Install from the project’s official source. Ollama’s download page provides macOS, Linux, and Windows choices. Open WebUI documents Docker, pip, uv, and desktop routes. For the other projects, follow their current repository instructions rather than relying on an old tutorial.
  4. Download one small quantized model first. A smaller model makes it easier to distinguish an installation problem from a memory or speed limit. Record the model’s exact name, quantization, and license.
  5. Run a local-only smoke test. Disconnect optional providers, confirm the backend address is local, and send a harmless prompt. Watch memory use and generation speed before importing private documents.
  6. Add the interface or API. Connect Open WebUI to the local Ollama service or another OpenAI-compatible endpoint, or point your application at the API server you selected. Use authentication and restrict listening addresses when the service is not meant for other machines.
  7. Document the configuration. Save the model identifier, context limit, quantization, backend URL, and hardware settings. Reproducing a working setup is much easier when an update changes defaults.

How do local and cloud backends affect privacy?

A prompt stays on your hardware only when the selected model backend performs inference locally and the application does not route content elsewhere. Open WebUI, for example, can connect to local Ollama or to OpenAI-compatible hosted APIs, so the same interface can have different data paths in different configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before using sensitive text, verify four points:

  • The provider or connection name identifies a local endpoint, not a hosted account.
  • The model files are present on the machine and the application is not falling back to a cloud model.
  • Telemetry, update checks, plugins, and remote retrieval features match your policy.
  • Any network-accessible API has authentication, firewall rules, and a clear list of allowed users.

Offline operation also has a practical sequence. Internet access is normally needed to obtain the application and model files. After those files are installed, generation can work without an internet connection if no remote provider, retrieval service, or extension is enabled. Updates and new model downloads will naturally require connectivity again.

What licenses and model terms should you check?

Check the project license for the software and the model license for the weights as two separate decisions. The seven projects are presented as open-source candidates, but license text and commercial-use clauses can change; read the current repository and product terms before deployment.

Is local AI free to run?

The software may be available without a subscription, but local AI is not cost-free in the broader sense. You supply storage for model files, electricity, a computer, and sometimes a GPU with enough VRAM. Larger models can justify a hardware upgrade; the evidence supports treating a GPU with sufficient VRAM or a computer with larger unified memory as an optional capacity investment, not as a guaranteed performance purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are also operational costs for a shared server: maintenance, backups, access control, monitoring, and replacement hardware. A hosted API may shift those costs into usage charges, while a local stack shifts them into ownership and administration. Choose based on privacy, latency, workload, and total capacity rather than assuming one path is universally cheaper.

Which setup is best for a solo desktop user or a team?

For a solo user, begin with one runner or desktop app and a model that fits comfortably in memory. Add a browser interface when you need multiple users, conversation management, or connections to more than one backend. For a team, treat the model server as infrastructure: define authentication, data retention, logging, upgrade procedures, and who may load new models.

Inference engines and serving systems become more attractive as you need API access, repeatable configuration, or concurrent requests. They also require more operational knowledge than an integrated desktop application. A self-hosted interface can improve usability without changing the underlying model’s capabilities, but it cannot compensate for insufficient memory or an unsuitable backend.

What are the most common failure modes?

The model downloads but will not load

Check available RAM or VRAM, quantization, context allocation, and whether another application is consuming memory. Try a smaller quantized model before changing multiple settings at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Generation is technically working but unusably slow

CPU-only inference, a model that exceeds available VRAM, long context, and competing workloads can all reduce speed. Shorten the context, close other GPU-heavy applications, or move to a smaller model; a larger model is not automatically a better interactive experience.

The interface works but prompts leave the machine

Inspect the configured provider and endpoint. A self-hosted front end can call a hosted OpenAI-compatible API, so replace that connection with a local backend and disable optional remote features when local-only processing is required.

An API client behaves differently from a hosted service

Compatibility layers may not implement every parameter, tool, or streaming behavior identically. Test the exact client and endpoint combination, pin a known-working model configuration, and avoid assuming that a familiar API name guarantees feature parity.

Several people can reach the service unexpectedly

Review the listening address, firewall, reverse proxy, and authentication settings. Keep a personal service bound to the local machine, and expose it to a network only after defining who is allowed to connect and what data may be retained.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should you make the final choice?

Use this decision sequence:

  1. Need the easiest local model runner across common desktop operating systems? Start with Ollama.
  2. Need runtime and server control more than a polished interface? Evaluate llama.cpp.
  3. Want a graphical, offline-oriented desktop chat program? Evaluate Jan.
  4. Need a browser interface that can switch between local and compatible backends? Evaluate Open WebUI, while checking the selected provider each time.
  5. Need document-centered workflows? Investigate AnythingLLM’s current local model and indexing support.
  6. Need an API endpoint for applications? Investigate LocalAI and verify compatibility with your client.
  7. Need GPU-backed serving for shared or high-throughput workloads? Investigate vLLM and confirm hardware support.

This role-first approach is more reliable than declaring one universal winner. The projects operate at different layers, their licenses and releases evolve, and there is no consistent seven-way benchmark establishing a single best tool for every computer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a local AI tool without an internet connection after setup?

Usually, yes, if the application, model files, and all required runtime components are already installed and the configured backend is local. Initial downloads, model updates, hosted providers, and some extensions still require a connection, so test your intended offline workflow before disconnecting.

Do I need the same license for the app and the model?

No. The application license covers the software project, while the model’s license covers its weights and sometimes its outputs or redistribution. Read both documents and retain the exact terms for every model you deploy.

Why can a model fit in memory yet respond very slowly?

Loading is only one constraint. Token generation also depends on memory bandwidth, CPU or GPU architecture, quantization, context length, drivers, and competing workloads; reducing context or choosing a smaller model can improve interactive speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it safe to expose a local model API to the internet?

A local process is not automatically a secure public service. If remote access is necessary, use authentication, firewall restrictions, encrypted transport, logging, and a clear data-retention policy; otherwise keep the endpoint bound to your machine or private network.
