Best ready-to-use choice: the Bambu Lab A1 Combo, because its bundle includes the AMS Lite color system and a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume. If the lowest listed price and a slightly larger cube matter more, Anycubic’s Kobra X is the value alternative. Both are filament-switching FDM printers, not full-color inkjet machines, and the advertised color counts depend on the hardware included or added.
Shortlist: the strongest evidence-backed options
Prices and bundles change, so treat the figures below as dated snapshots rather than guarantees. The Bambu Lab price is from its U.S. store on October 25, 2026; Anycubic figures are from its official store collection on the same date. This is a practical shortlist, not a claim that no other sub-$500 printers exist. Independent coverage from Tom’s Hardware, updated June 25, 2026, places a P1S AMS Combo at $899 in its comparison context, illustrating why the bundle—not just the base printer—determines whether a model fits this budget.
What “multicolor” means in this price range
These machines use fused-deposition modeling (FDM). They melt plastic filament and create an object layer by layer. An automatic material system holds multiple spools, unloads one filament and loads another when the sliced file calls for a color change. The result is a model with different colored regions or layers, but it is not the continuous, full-color surface produced by a professional color-printing process.

For specialized tasks, optionally upgrade to the ultra-fine 0.25mm nozzle for miniature details, or to the 0.6mm/0.8mm nozzles to slash print time on large, sturdy models.
Every change adds a pause for unloading, loading and purging. Purged plastic becomes waste, and the amount depends on the model’s color boundaries, purge settings and slicer. No comparable waste-rate measurement is established for the machines in this shortlist, so budget for extra filament without relying on a single percentage.
Which printer suits which buyer?
Bambu Lab A1 Combo: the simplest complete bundle
The A1 Combo is the safest default when you want to open one box and start making four-color models. Bambu’s U.S. listing says the Combo includes AMS Lite, and its specifications give the printer a cubic build area large enough for many display pieces, organizers and tabletop models. The key purchasing detail is the word “Combo”: the standard A1 does not automatically mean the same package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBambu lists PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA as ideal materials for the A1. It marks ABS, ASA, PC, PA, PET and fiber-reinforced polymers as not recommended, and its FAQ says not to enclose the printer. That makes this bundle a strong choice for general-purpose decorative and functional prints, but a poor default for a buyer whose main workload needs a heated, controlled chamber.
The specification sheet gives a 500 mm/s maximum toolhead speed. That is a manufacturer ceiling, not a promise that a multicolor object will finish at that speed; color changes, layer cooling, model geometry and chosen quality settings can dominate elapsed time.
Anycubic Kobra X: the low-price, larger-cube alternative
Anycubic’s official collection lists Kobra X at $299, with a 260 × 260 × 260 mm volume, native four-color printing and an expansion path described as up to 19 colors. The larger stated cube can help when a project is just beyond the A1’s footprint, while the lower listed price leaves more room for filament and replacement parts.
Read the listing as a capacity claim, not as a requirement to buy every color immediately. Expansion normally means additional material-management hardware, more spools, more purge and more setup. Before ordering from a marketplace, verify that the product title identifies Kobra X and that the box includes the color system you expect; a printer-only listing can look similar to a complete bundle.

Anycubic Kobra 4 Combo: an expansion-oriented bundle
Anycubic’s global collection lists the Kobra 4 Combo at $379 and describes four colors as standard with support for up to eight. It is worth considering if you specifically value that stated expansion ceiling and want a package labeled Combo. The cited catalog does not provide enough comparative information here to rank its speed, reliability or enclosure performance against the other models, so treat those as questions to verify in the exact regional listing.

Bambu Lab A1 Mini Combo: when desk space matters most
The A1 Mini Combo pairs the smaller printer with AMS Lite and four-color capability. Its attraction is footprint, not maximum part size. Check the volume of the particular regional listing and compare it with your largest planned object before paying; the available U.S. page does not provide a sufficiently clear current Combo price for a fair price ranking.
Five checks to make before paying
1. Price the complete color setup
Compare like with like: printer-only against printer-only, or Combo against Combo. A low headline price can exclude the automatic material system, extra tubing, a hub or the number of spool positions needed for the advertised color count. Add tax, shipping and at least one spare spool to your checkout calculation. Retail tracker figures can omit tax and shipping, and official-store promotions can end without notice.
2. Match usable volume to your projects
Use the manufacturer’s stated print volume, not the machine’s outside dimensions. The A1’s cube and Kobra X’s slightly larger cube are close enough that most small models fit either, but a helmet, vase or multi-part prop may cross the boundary. Measure the object in the slicer, leave clearance for brims and supports, and remember that a diagonal fit is not always available once the bed and nozzle margins are considered.
3. Separate color count from useful color count
Four colors cover logos, signs, character faces and simple accents. More colors help only when the design genuinely uses them. A claimed maximum such as 19 colors is an expansion capacity, not the number delivered in every box. More spools also mean more calibration, storage, purge and potential points of failure.
4. Check material and chamber requirements
For PLA, PETG, flexible TPU and soluble PVA, the A1’s published guidance is favorable. If you need ABS, ASA, nylon, polycarbonate or fiber-filled filament, do not assume an open frame will provide the thermal stability or wear resistance required. Choose a model whose manufacturer explicitly supports your material and whose nozzle, bed and chamber specifications match it.
5. Confirm the exact regional variant
“Combo” can mean different hardware in different stores. Check the model name, included color unit, power plug, warranty region and return policy on the page you will actually buy from. Save a copy of the configuration or invoice so you can prove which components were promised if a shipment arrives incomplete.
Do you need an enclosed printer under $500?
Not for every multicolor project. An open printer is usually adequate for PLA decorations, signs, toys and many PETG parts when the manufacturer approves those materials. An enclosure becomes more important when you need a stable warm environment, reduced drafts or controlled fumes for materials that warp more readily.

- Multicolor 3D Printing: 4 × CFS for up to 16 colors. By hooking up as many as four CFS units together, you are able to print in the splendor of 16 colors. Saves the need for extra painting afterward. Also, K2 offers a build volume of 260 × 260 × 260 mm, able to cover the majority of user scenarios. (* K2 Combo includes K2 and one CFS unit)
- Ultra Quiet Printing: Silent Mode for a quieter printing experience. Annoyed by the buzzing noise? Not K2. By adopting step-servo motors and dynamically balanced fans. It is no louder than someone typing on a laptop PC
- Out-of-the-Box Experience: Pre-assembled for plug and play. You can use K2 right after unpacking and screen installation. Unlocks a wider selection of materials, including PLA/PETG/ABS/PLA-CF/PET
- Smart Auto Leveling & AI Camera: Faster leveling of only the target print area. The leveling sensor only probes and levels the bed area relevant to the desired print. Much faster and more precise. Close watch around the clock, Watch over spaghetti failure, idling, and so on in real-time
- Superior Print Quality: Sturdy frame and precise step-servo motor system. K2 uses 3 step-servo motors, both in the extruder and on the X/Y axis. They can adjust torque dynamically in less than a millisecond, taking the speed, extrusion consistency, print accuracy and noise control to the next level
The A1’s own guidance says it should not be enclosed, so adding a tent to force it into an engineering-material role is not a sound default recommendation. If your buying brief starts with ABS, ASA, PC, PA or fiber-filled polymers, reverse the decision: define the material and chamber requirements first, then find a printer that officially supports them, even if that means sacrificing color capacity or waiting for a sale above this budget.
What the first multicolor print involves
- Assemble and inspect. Follow the model-specific manual, check that the bed and gantry move freely, and confirm every color-system cable and filament path is seated.
- Update and calibrate. Install the manufacturer’s current firmware and run the offered bed, flow and filament calibration routines before attempting a complex four-color model.
- Prepare matching materials. Use filaments with compatible temperature ranges and drying requirements. Label each spool by color and material so a later reload does not silently change the profile.
- Assign colors in the slicer. Load the printer profile, map each model region to a spool slot and inspect the layer preview. Look for unintended color changes, thin walls and supports assigned to an unsuitable material.
- Plan purge and supports. Keep the default purge behavior for the first test. After you understand the result, adjust purge or use a purge tower only when the slicer and printer documentation support that change.
- Watch the opening layers. Confirm first-layer adhesion, filament loading and the first color transition. Stop early if the nozzle drags, a spool tangles or the wrong filament enters the hot end.
A single-color calibration cube is still useful before a long multicolor job. It isolates bed leveling, extrusion and adhesion problems from the additional variables introduced by switching spools.

The print changes to the wrong color
Pause the job and check the slicer’s slot mapping, then verify that each physical spool is in the slot assigned to that color. If the mapping is correct, inspect the filament path for a partial unload or a broken strand. Re-slice a small test with obvious color blocks before restarting the full model.
Color boundaries look muddy
Increase the purge amount recommended by the slicer or manufacturer, reduce cross-contamination by using clean filament ends, and check that the nozzle temperature suits both materials. Expect a trade-off: more purge improves separation but consumes more plastic and time.
Filament jams during a swap
Unload the spool, trim a damaged or swollen tip, and confirm the filament is dry and routed without a sharp bend. Clean the nozzle according to the printer’s maintenance procedure. Do not pull hard against a locked drive gear; that can leave fragments in the path.
A tall multicolor model tips over
Recheck first-layer adhesion, clean the build surface with the method specified for its coating, and add a brim if the slicer supports it. A color-change sequence can keep the nozzle moving over the same area for a long time, so a marginal first layer is more likely to fail late in the job.
The advertised color count is unavailable
Look at the invoice and product contents. If the box contains only the base printer, you bought a different variant from the one described in a review or search result. Contact the seller before opening additional hardware, and use the return window if the listing did not clearly disclose the missing component.

Is spending up to $500 worthwhile compared with a $200 printer?
It can be, when the extra money buys the automatic color system, a larger usable volume, better calibration assistance or an expansion path that you would otherwise add later. The convenience is most visible on models with repeated color changes: manual pauses and filament swaps are slower and easier to get wrong.
It is not automatically worthwhile if you print only single-color parts, need a heated enclosure for engineering polymers, or are still learning whether FDM suits you. A less expensive single-color machine plus a reliable workflow may produce better results for that use case. Decide from your files and materials, not from the maximum color number on a product page.
A decision checklist for the final comparison
- Is the listing a complete Combo or the base printer?
- Does the stated build volume fit your largest model with supports and brims?
- Are four colors enough, or will expansion hardware be part of the initial budget?
- Are your chosen filaments explicitly supported, and do they need an enclosure?
- Have you included filament, purge waste, spare nozzles and shipping in the total?
- Can you return the unit locally if the color system arrives missing or damaged?
- Will the printer’s open or enclosed design fit your ventilation, noise and workspace constraints?
Frequently asked buying questions
Can you get a multicolor 3D printer for under $500?
Yes. The A1 Combo was listed below that ceiling in Bambu Lab’s U.S. store on October 25, 2026, while Anycubic’s official listings placed Kobra X and Kobra 4 Combo below it. Verify the live regional bundle and checkout total because those are mutable retail snapshots.
How many colors should a first-time buyer plan for?
Four is a sensible starting point: it covers common logos, labels and character details without requiring a large expansion investment. Choose a higher-capacity system only when you already have projects that need those additional colors and accept the extra spools, purge and maintenance.
Does a multicolor printer eliminate post-processing?
No. You may still need to remove purge material, trim stringing, clean supports and smooth visible seams. Color changes reduce manual swapping; they do not guarantee a finished, paint-free surface.

Not by default. The A1’s published material guidance excludes several engineering plastics and advises against an enclosure. For demanding parts, select a printer based on documented chamber, nozzle and material support first, then evaluate whether multicolor is worth the added complexity.
