There is no single developer-approved competitive preset for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. The strongest starting point is a stable, readable setup: match your display resolution, protect frame-time consistency, remove unnecessary visual and audio clutter, use a Tactical controller layout with aim assist enabled, and tune deadzones until stick drift disappears. Treat every sensitivity, graphics-quality, and audio value as a baseline to test on your own platform and controller.

Activision’s documented PC features explain what the game can change, while independent guides and one PC performance test show useful starting points rather than universal answers. The settings below separate those facts from editorial recommendations so you can build a repeatable competitive setup.

What a competitive setup should optimize

Competitive settings are not about making every option as low as possible. They should make targets easy to identify, keep camera movement consistent, preserve a reliable frame rate, and separate important sounds from music and dialogue. The right balance depends on your platform, display resolution, refresh capability, controller wear, headset, and tolerance for visual detail.

Use this order when changing settings:

  1. Stability: eliminate stutter and large frame-time swings before chasing a higher average frame rate.
  2. Readability: keep enemies, shadows, and weapon effects clear enough to track.
  3. Input consistency: remove stick drift and choose a layout you can operate without stretching your hands.
  4. Audio separation: make footsteps and gameplay effects prominent without making team communication unusable.
  5. Repeatability: change one variable at a time and test in the multiplayer mode you actually play.

Do not copy a community table as if it were an official Activision specification. The competitive-settings guide from NeuralBoost, updated October 23, 2026, explicitly notes that official competitive values are not established in the available material. Its reported claim of more than 800 customization options, relayed from Activision’s September 29 PC blog, illustrates the amount of tuning available but does not identify a best preset.

Quick-start baseline

Apply the following as a first pass, then run the tests in the later sections. “Starting point” means an editorial baseline, not a guaranteed advantage.

Area Starting point Why it is used Status
Resolution Use your display’s native resolution if the system can hold a stable frame time Prevents scaling softness and gives a consistent image Practical guidance
PC FOV Enable Enhanced FOV if you prefer a wider peripheral view; avoid a value that makes targets too small Expands peripheral information without changing the center FOV, according to Activision Enhanced FOV is an official PC feature; the ideal value is personal
Depth of field Disable or minimize World Depth of Field and Weapon Depth of Field while testing visibility Reduces focus-style blur around gameplay elements Editorial baseline; Activision confirms the controls exist
Muzzle effects Enable the documented dynamic masking option if it improves your sight picture Can reduce muzzle-effect obstruction at the point of aim Official feature; performance benefit is not guaranteed
Graphics quality Begin at Balanced on a mid-range PC, then lower the heaviest settings individually PC Gamer’s test found Balanced faster than Ultra on its system Single-system test, not a universal benchmark
Controller layout Tactical Moves commonly used actions to a layout recommended by a current controller guide Third-party recommendation
Aim assist Target Aim Assist on Matches the controller guide’s baseline Third-party recommendation
Trigger effects Off if resistance distracts you or slows repeated actions Removes adaptive trigger resistance from the input path Third-party recommendation
Deadzone Increase the minimum only until unwanted stick movement stops Controls the trade-off between fast response and drift Controller-dependent tuning
Audio mix Headphones; Stereo output Matches the current audio guide’s baseline Third-party recommendation
Effects/music/dialogue Effects 100; gameplay music 0; dialogue 30 Prioritizes gameplay cues over music Third-party recommendation

Graphics settings for visibility and frame-time consistency

Start with the display and platform

Modern Warfare 4 was announced for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, with an October 23, 2026 release date announced by Activision on May 28, 2026. That date has passed; check the current store listing and the installed build on your platform because availability, patches, and graphics menus can change after launch.

On PC, first select the resolution your monitor actually uses. A lower internal resolution may raise performance, but it can also soften distant targets. On a console, use the system and game display modes available to your hardware and TV or monitor. Record the resolution, refresh capability, field-of-view choice, and any dynamic-resolution setting before you compare presets.

Use FOV as a visibility trade-off

Activision describes Enhanced FOV as a PC-exclusive feature that uses lens effects to expand peripheral field of view without changing the center FOV. It is a visibility option, not a promise of higher frame rate. A wider view can help you notice movement at the edge of the screen, but it also makes distant targets occupy fewer pixels. If you repeatedly lose small targets, reduce the FOV until target recognition improves rather than copying a streamer’s value.

Control depth of field and muzzle obstruction

The official PC announcement lists separate World Depth of Field and Weapon Depth of Field controls. Test each independently in a private match or training area. If focus blur makes a target or sight picture harder to read, disable the relevant effect. Keeping one effect enabled may be acceptable if it does not interfere with your reticle, but there is no evidence that either choice is universally superior.

Activision also documents dynamic muzzle-effect masking at the point of aim. Enable it, then fire repeatedly at a fixed target and check whether the sight picture remains readable. The feature changes what is masked; it is not documented as a guaranteed FPS improvement.

What the PC Gamer test actually shows

PC Gamer tested the graphics presets in 2026 on a 1440p display with an AMD RX 9070 XT, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and 32 GB of DDR5 memory. It used repeatable 30-second runs in Campaign Mission 4. Those conditions are useful for understanding the direction of the trade-off, but they are not a multiplayer benchmark and should not be treated as a promise for your system.

Preset or adjustment Average FPS 1% low FPS How to interpret it
Minimum 146 119 Fastest tested preset on that system
Basic 137 114 Lower average and low than Minimum in this run
Balanced 133 109 PC Gamer’s simple starting point for mid-range PCs
Ultra 107 85 Higher visual quality with a substantial performance cost in this test
Extreme 97 75 Slowest tested preset in this run
Ultra with four quality settings lowered 124 101 Shows that targeted reductions can recover performance without selecting Minimum

PC Gamer recommends starting at Balanced for a mid-range PC and lowering shadow quality, shadow filtering, terrain quality, and possibly detail quality when more performance is needed. Its test notes that reducing detail quality can make some trees look blocky. Keep the change if the frame-time improvement matters more than that visual artifact; otherwise raise detail quality again and lower another expensive option.

Build your own PC preset in a controlled pass

  1. Load the multiplayer map or mode where you need the most consistency. Do not tune only in a quiet campaign scene.
  2. Set your display resolution and a frame-rate cap that your system can hold rather than targeting an occasional peak.
  3. Begin at Balanced, record average FPS and the worst-feeling dips, and note whether shadows and distant geometry remain readable.
  4. Lower shadow quality first, then shadow filtering, terrain quality, and detail quality one at a time. Restart the same route or aiming drill after each change.
  5. Keep the first setting that improves low-frame behavior without hiding targets. If trees or geometry become distracting, restore detail quality and test the next option.
  6. Recheck after every major patch. A setting that was expensive in one build can behave differently after an engine or driver update.

Prioritize lows over headline averages

A high average FPS number does not prevent a short hitch during a gunfight. Compare frame pacing and 1% lows where your tools expose them, and judge the result while turning, aiming, and firing. If a lower preset produces a higher average but visibly uneven motion, the supposedly faster choice may feel worse. The MW4 Field Manual’s reference guidance similarly emphasizes stable frame pacing and readable shadows over chasing a single maximum number.

Controller settings for aim and movement

Choose a layout you can operate without hesitation

Dot Esports’ controller guide recommends the Tactical button layout. Use it as a starting point if it lets you crouch, slide, or melee without removing your thumb from the aim stick. Layout changes are only useful when they reduce hesitation; a familiar alternative can be better if Tactical forces awkward finger movement.

No reviewed source establishes a controller model as necessary or best. Test with the controller you actually use, including its current stick condition and trigger feel.

Enable aim assist, then tune around your control

The same guide recommends Target Aim Assist enabled. Keep it on while you establish a baseline so you are not changing multiple systems at once. Aim-assist behavior can feel different as you alter sensitivity, response curves, or field of view, so evaluate the complete setup rather than judging one toggle in isolation.

Set deadzones to the minimum stable value

Deadzone settings define how far a stick must move before the game registers input. A smaller minimum can feel quicker, but a worn stick may produce camera movement or character drift while your thumb is still. A larger value can suppress that drift at the cost of a less immediate initial response.

  1. Place the controller on a flat surface and stop touching both sticks.
  2. Watch the camera and movement indicator for at least several seconds. If the view or character moves, the current minimum is too low for that stick.
  3. Raise the minimum in small increments until the unwanted movement stops.
  4. Run a repeatable drill: track a fixed object, make a 180-degree turn, and strafe around a target without firing.
  5. Lower the value one increment only if the controller remains still at rest and your fine aim feels noticeably delayed.
  6. Repeat the check after the controller warms up and after a long session; drift can appear intermittently.

Do not copy another player’s deadzone number. The correct value depends on wear, firmware behavior, hand pressure, and whether the stick drifts only in one direction.

Trigger effects and sensitivity

Dot Esports recommends trigger effects off. Disable them if adaptive resistance slows repeated shots, makes your trigger timing inconsistent, or adds fatigue. Leave them on only when the resistance helps your control and does not interfere with the actions you use competitively.

The guide also publishes sensitivity recommendations, but the available official material contains no Activision-defined competitive sensitivity value. Start from a sensitivity that lets you turn quickly enough to respond, then change one increment at a time. Use the same aiming drill after every change: track a moving target, snap between two fixed points, and make a controlled turn. Keep the setting that gives you repeatable stops rather than the fastest possible rotation.

Audio settings for footsteps and team information

Apply the current headphone baseline

Dexerto’s Modern Warfare 4 audio guide recommends Headphones for Audio Mix, Stereo output, Effects Volume at 100, Gameplay Music at 0, Dialogue at 30, and Reduce Tinnitus Sound enabled. These are editorial starting values, not official Activision requirements.

Audio control Guide’s baseline What to check after applying it
Audio Mix Headphones Whether directional cues remain distinct on your actual headphones
Output Stereo Whether left-right placement matches your system and operating-system output
Effects Volume 100 Whether effects are clear without becoming fatiguing
Gameplay Music 0 Whether removing music improves concentration
Dialogue 30 Whether callouts remain understandable to you and your team
Reduce Tinnitus Sound Enabled Whether the option makes loud effects more comfortable

Calibrate voice communication separately

Use the in-game microphone test to set microphone level instead of guessing from a menu meter. Dexerto’s guide recommends push-to-talk. That can reduce open-mic noise, but it is only practical if you can reach the assigned key or button without compromising movement. If your team misses callouts, raise dialogue or voice-chat level only as much as needed; do not automatically reduce effects that carry gameplay information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Headphones are an option, not a guarantee

An ordinary stereo gaming headset or pair of headphones fits the guide’s Headphones and Stereo baseline. The available sources do not test a particular model or show that a more expensive headset improves competitive performance. Check fit, comfort, channel balance, and whether your platform is actually outputting stereo before buying new hardware.

Platform and display decisions

Situation Priority Adjustment to make
PC with inconsistent frame time Stable lows Start at Balanced and lower the tested shadow, filtering, terrain, or detail options individually
PC with a high-refresh 1440p display Frame pacing and target size Hold a sustainable frame rate; do not widen FOV until distant targets become unreadable
PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S Display-mode consistency Use the game’s available performance/display mode, then test visibility and camera smoothness in multiplayer
Nintendo Switch 2 Readable image at the available output Use the platform’s current graphics options and prioritize a stable, legible presentation over cosmetic quality
Any platform with TV post-processing Input consistency Use the display’s low-latency or game mode where available and avoid extra image processing that changes timing

The platform table describes decision priorities, not undocumented console menu values. Menu names and available toggles can change with patches, so confirm the labels in your installed version.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Likely setting area Next test
Targets are hard to see at the edge of the screen FOV or display scaling Narrow FOV slightly, verify native resolution, and compare the same target at the same distance
Camera moves while the controller is untouched Stick deadzone Raise the minimum until drift stops, then repeat the rest test after a long session
Aim feels sluggish after changing graphics Frame pacing or display mode Compare low-frame behavior while turning and firing; choose the smoother preset, not merely the higher average
Muzzle flash obscures the sight picture Dynamic muzzle-effect masking or effects visibility Enable the documented masking option and test it on a fixed target
Footsteps disappear under the mix Music, dialogue, output mode, or headset path Use the Headphones/Stereo baseline, set music to 0, then adjust dialogue only as needed
Team cannot understand your callouts Microphone level or push-to-talk access Run the in-game mic test and choose a reachable push-to-talk control
Low graphics reveal blocky trees Detail quality Restore detail quality and lower another expensive setting instead

A repeatable competitive-settings checklist

  1. Write down your platform, display resolution, refresh capability, controller, headset, FOV choice, and current frame-rate cap.
  2. Apply the graphics, controller, and audio baselines separately rather than changing everything during one match.
  3. Run the same movement-and-aim drill before and after each change.
  4. Play several minutes in the multiplayer mode that matters to you and watch for low-frame hitches, target-size problems, drift, and missed audio cues.
  5. Keep a change only when it improves a defined problem without creating a new one.
  6. Recheck the full setup after patches, driver updates, controller wear, or a display change.

The most defensible Modern Warfare 4 competitive setup is therefore a documented baseline plus controlled tuning. Activision’s PC features give you more visibility controls, the independent guides provide practical first values, and PC Gamer’s measurements show why graphics quality must be judged against your own frame pacing rather than a universal preset.
