For a Steam Deck library built around large games, start with a reputable 1TB UHS-I microSDXC card marked U3 and A2. The Samsung PRO Plus 1TB is the best-documented default in the available specifications, while the Samsung EVO Select 1TB is a closely documented alternative. Choose 512GB if you rotate a smaller library; consider a verified 2TB listing when capacity matters more than certainty about the exact model. Both LCD and OLED Steam Decks use UHS-I microSD slots, so a UHS-II or UHS-III card cannot deliver its higher bus speed in the Deck.
These are specification-based recommendations, not a claim that one card has been independently proven fastest in Steam Deck installs or game loading. Check the exact capacity, revision, seller, warranty and current stock before ordering; Samsung’s direct US 1TB listings showed out of stock when checked.

Which microSD card should you buy for a Steam Deck?
Buy a 1TB UHS-I microSDXC card with U3 and A2 markings from a reputable seller if you want several large games installed at once. The Samsung PRO Plus 1TB is the safest specification-led starting point because its interface, speed classes, application class and warranty are documented together. It is not a measured Steam Deck speed winner, and its direct US 1TB adapter listing was out of stock when checked, so compare live retailer listings rather than assuming Samsung has stock.
The Samsung EVO Select 1TB provides a similarly documented route. If maximum space is the priority, a Lexar PLAY 2TB listing is worth investigating, but verify the exact product page, seller, speed markings, warranty and stock before treating it as a firm recommendation. A 512GB card remains sensible for a smaller rotating library.

Are all Steam Deck microSD cards compatible?
Yes. Valve says all Steam Deck models support storage expansion through microSD, and both LCD and OLED hardware use UHS-I microSD support. Valve’s support guidance says UHS-I class 3 or better cards are supported; UHS-II and UHS-III cards may function, but the Deck does not support their higher transfer rates.
What the UHS-I ceiling means
A card advertised with a faster UHS-II or UHS-III bus does not turn the Deck’s slot into a faster interface. You would be paying for capability the Deck cannot use. A UHS-I card with appropriate classes is the more rational match, even if a UHS-II card is backward-compatible.
LCD and OLED use the same card approach
The storage decision does not change between Steam Deck LCD and OLED models: both accept microSD cards through UHS-I slots. The card expands storage; the Deck still retains its internal drive, so a microSD purchase adds capacity rather than replacing internal storage.
How much capacity do you need: 512GB, 1TB or 2TB?
Choose capacity from the size of the library you want available without reinstalling, not from a promised number of games. Installation sizes vary widely, patches can add data, and the formatted capacity is lower than the decimal number on the label.
512GB: a rotating library
A 512GB card suits players who keep a handful of large games installed and remove finished titles. The Samsung Sonic the Hedgehog PRO Plus is documented in a 512GB version with UHS-I, U3, V30 and A2 markings. Its themed artwork does not create a performance tier; buy it only if the design and current terms appeal to you.
1TB: the practical starting point
One terabyte is the most balanced choice for multiple large installations. The Samsung PRO Plus 1TB and EVO Select 1TB both have manufacturer-documented UHS-I, U3, V30 and A2 specifications. Treat “1TB” as a capacity class rather than a fixed game count: the Deck’s operating system, game updates and each title’s install footprint determine how much space remains.

2TB: maximum capacity with more listing risk
A verified 2TB listing can reduce shuffling for a large library. The Lexar PLAY 2TB appears in a recent listing-based comparison, but that identification does not establish a universal model revision, independent Deck benchmark, or current warranty terms. Confirm the precise listing and seller before paying a capacity premium, and be wary of listings that omit the manufacturer model number.
Which documented cards are worth comparing?
Samsung PRO Plus 1TB
This is the strongest default when you want a complete, manufacturer-documented specification set. Samsung lists UHS-I, U3, V30 and A2, with up to 180 MB/s sequential read and up to 130 MB/s sequential write under its specified test conditions and reader. It also carries a limited 10-year warranty.
The 180 MB/s and 130 MB/s figures are not Steam Deck installation measurements. They describe peak sequential performance in controlled conditions; the host device, reader and workload affect actual results. Samsung’s direct US 1TB adapter listing was out of stock when checked, so use the full model and capacity when searching reputable retailers.
Samsung EVO Select 1TB
The EVO Select 1TB is a documented alternative with UHS-I, U3, V30 and A2 markings. Samsung’s July 2024 announcement advertises up to 160 MB/s read performance and a limited 10-year warranty. A launch MSRP from 2024 is not a 2026 street price, so compare the current seller price and return terms against the PRO Plus rather than using the old MSRP.

Samsung’s direct 1TB listing was also out of stock when checked. That does not prove the card is unavailable elsewhere; it means availability must be confirmed at the time of purchase.
Samsung Sonic the Hedgehog PRO Plus 512GB or 1TB
Samsung’s 2025 data sheet covers both capacities and lists UHS-I, U3, V30, A2 and a limited 10-year warranty. Samsung identifies a 512GB Sonic design and a 1TB Shadow design. The artwork is the differentiator, not a faster Steam Deck mode, and any launch promotion described for the product should not be treated as an ongoing discount.

Samsung lists 1,025,356,333,056 bytes for the 1TB Sonic model. After SteamOS formats the card and creates its file system, the usable figure will be lower; do not convert the label into a guaranteed count of large games.
Lexar PLAY 2TB
This is the capacity-first candidate. A comparison dated October 14, 2026, based on product listings rather than practical testing, identifies a 2TB PLAY card with a UHS-I/A2 description. Before buying, confirm the exact model number, U3 or V30 marking if important to your wider use, warranty, seller reputation and return policy.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The available evidence does not establish that the 2TB PLAY is the fastest card for Steam Deck. Its reason to buy is space, provided the specific listing is genuine and current.
Lexar PLAY 1TB and SanDisk Extreme 1TB
Both appear as additional 1TB comparison paths in the same recent listing-based comparison. Their exact current model-level markings and warranty were not independently established in manufacturer documentation for this guide. Do not assign either a benchmark ranking or silently transfer specifications from another revision carrying a similar product name.
What do U3, V30 and A2 actually mean?
These labels describe different aspects of a card and should not be read as Steam Deck load-time scores.
| Marking | What it describes | Documented figure or implication |
|---|---|---|
| U3 | UHS Speed Class sustained-write requirement | Valve’s supported class guidance includes UHS-I Class 3 or better |
| V30 | Video Speed Class sustained-write rate | 30 MB/s sustained capture class, according to Samsung’s 2025 data sheet |
| A2 | Application-performance random-access minimums | 4,000 random-read IOPS and 2,000 random-write IOPS as the class minimums in Samsung’s 2025 explanation |
A2 is useful when comparing cards because it signals random-access performance requirements, but Valve does not state that A2 is mandatory. It also does not prove that a particular game will load faster, because game loading depends on the Deck’s host, the title, file layout and other system work.

Does a faster microSD card make Steam Deck games load faster?
Not in a way established by the available evidence. Manufacturer “up to” figures are measured under specified reader and host conditions, while no independently established same-Deck comparison here reports installation times or game-load times for these candidates.
Sequential read and write numbers can be useful for computer transfers, but they should not be converted into a guaranteed in-game result. The Deck’s UHS-I interface also limits the benefit of buying a card whose headline speed depends on UHS-II or UHS-III.
How to read peak speed claims
Samsung’s PRO Plus claims of up to 180 MB/s read and 130 MB/s write, and the Sonic PRO Plus claims of up to 180 MB/s read and 130 MB/s write, apply under controlled conditions with a specified Samsung reader. Samsung also states up to 104 MB/s for UHS-I SDR104 in its 2025 data sheet. These are interface or laboratory-style maximums, not measured Steam Deck throughput.
How do you format a microSD card in SteamOS?
Back up anything you need before formatting. Steam Deck formatting erases the card, and Valve says Steam Deck microSD cards use ext4 with casefolding; the Deck formats the card to the proper format.
- Insert the microSD card fully into the Deck’s slot.
- Open Steam.
- Choose Settings.
- Open System.
- Select Format SD card.
- Confirm the warning and wait for SteamOS to finish.
- After formatting, open the Storage settings and select the card as an install location when you want new games placed there.
A USB microSD reader is optional for moving files with a computer; it is not required for the in-Deck formatting procedure. If you do use a reader, its speed and the computer’s port affect transfer results, which is why a card’s advertised peak should not be treated as a Deck result.

- Exact capacity and model: Match the product code and capacity, not just a family name. Similar names can cover different revisions.
- UHS-I interface: This matches the Deck’s supported bus. UHS-II or UHS-III is unnecessary for unlocking Deck speed.
- U3 and A2 markings: U3 aligns with Valve’s class guidance; A2 is a useful application-performance distinction but not a Valve requirement.
- Seller and return policy: Use a reputable seller and avoid listings that lack a clear manufacturer model number or warranty information.
- Current stock and price: Check the live listing on the day you order. Direct 1TB Samsung listings were out of stock when checked, and a 2024 launch price should not be used as a 2026 street-price assumption.
- Warranty: The documented Samsung cards carry limited 10-year warranties; confirm that the seller and region provide the terms you expect.
- Other devices: If you will also use the card in a camera or another device, weigh that device’s requirements separately. Video-class labels describe sustained capture, not Steam Deck game loading.
What problems can occur after installation?
The Deck does not detect the card
Power the Deck down, remove and reseat the card, then boot again. If it still does not appear, verify that the card is genuine, correctly sized and not a damaged or incomplete listing; try the formatting path in Steam > Settings > System only after securing any needed backup.
Formatting fails or the card reports less space
Formatting removes existing data, so copy files elsewhere first. A decimal 1TB label represents the manufacturer’s listed bytes, while the ext4 file system and its metadata reduce the available figure. That difference is normal and does not indicate that the Deck has lost a fixed number of games.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDownloads or transfers seem slower than the label
“Up to” speeds require the stated reader, host and conditions. Network speed, the computer’s USB port, the reader, Steam’s download process and the Deck’s UHS-I interface can all become the limiting factor. A peak card specification is not a promise that every transfer will reach it.
A listing is out of stock or has conflicting specifications
Do not substitute a similarly named revision without checking its model code and markings. Choose another documented capacity or wait for verified stock rather than treating an unverified listing as equivalent.
How we picked these cards
The comparison prioritizes compatibility with the Deck’s UHS-I slot, capacity for large installations, documented U3/V30/A2 classes, seller and stock confidence, current cost per capacity, warranty terms and whether the card’s specification is useful in another device. Manufacturer maximums are presented as conditional claims, and listing-based candidates are clearly separated from cards with a fuller manufacturer data sheet. No card is ranked by an invented installation-time or loading benchmark.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many large Steam Deck games fit on a 1TB card?
There is no reliable fixed count because installation sizes, optional high-resolution assets and updates differ by game. The Deck keeps its internal storage as well, so the practical total is the free space on both drives after SteamOS and installed content are accounted for.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Why does a 1TB card show less usable space in SteamOS?
Manufacturers label capacity in decimal bytes; Samsung lists 1,025,356,333,056 bytes for one 1TB model. SteamOS then creates an ext4 file system with metadata, so the usable number shown by the Deck is lower than the package label.
Do I need a USB reader to prepare a card for Steam Deck?
No. SteamOS can format the card through Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card. A reader is only an optional convenience for transferring files with a computer.
Should I buy a themed card for better game performance?
No. The Sonic and Shadow designs are cosmetic variants in the documented product family. Capacity, verified model, class markings, seller terms and warranty matter more than the artwork.
