Which PC hardware and software baseline does the game require?

If your computer is below the minimum, settings changes may not eliminate stutter or launch failures. Confirm the game is being launched through the expected EA app or Steam installation before treating a compatibility problem as a graphics problem.

EA documents Fullscreen, Borderless, and Windowed modes. Fullscreen is the documented default and is appropriate when you want the game to take exclusive control of the display. Borderless keeps desktop-style switching convenient for frequent Alt-Tab use. Windowed mode is useful for a smaller desktop window but generally is not the first choice for maximum immersion.
There is no documented universal FPS difference between these modes. Choose the behavior you value, then judge smoothness by frame-time consistency rather than by assuming one mode is always faster.

Which graphics options should you lower first?
Change one option, revisit the same type of scene, and keep the change only if it reaches your target. The order below follows the available evidence and protects image quality as long as possible.
1. Dynamic Shadows
Test Dynamic Shadows first when you are below target. In PC Gamer’s mid-range test system, this was the largest performance lever among the toggles examined, producing a reported improvement of about 16 percent when changed. The exact gain depends on hardware and scene, so treat that figure as a historical measurement rather than a current guarantee.
2. Ambient Occlusion
Ambient Occlusion adds contact shading that helps characters and objects appear grounded. EA explicitly notes that turning it off may improve performance on some systems. PC Gamer measured a 7 percent improvement on its mid-range build, from 126 fps to 135 fps, when Ambient Occlusion was disabled. If you need headroom after testing shadows, this is the next sensible switch.
3. Resolution
If shadows and Ambient Occlusion are not enough, lower resolution—particularly at a 4K target. A stable lower resolution usually looks better than a fluctuating native-resolution image. Try the nearest lower mode your monitor scales cleanly before making several other compromises at once.

4. Antialiasing
Leave antialiasing enabled when image quality is important. PC Gamer recorded just under a 6 percent performance gain from disabling it, but also reported a clear loss of edge quality and more visible jagged lines. That is a poor trade for many players; use it only after the larger levers fail to meet your target.
5. Motion Blur and Film Grain
Motion Blur and Film Grain are independent toggles. Disable either if you prefer a cleaner, sharper presentation, but the available evidence does not establish a universal FPS gain for these effects. Their value is primarily visual preference rather than a dependable performance fix.

How should HDR be calibrated?
HDR is display-specific, so there is no universal brightness number that works for every television or monitor. Should you update drivers to improve FPS?
Keeping the graphics driver and Windows components current is a reasonable maintenance step, but no driver update guarantees a Mass Effect Legendary Edition performance increase.
