Start with macOS itself. Activity Monitor is the best first tool for a Mac that suddenly feels slow because it shows which processes are consuming CPU or memory and can create a system diagnostics report. Then follow the symptom: use System Settings > General > Storage for a crowded startup disk, Disk Utility for suspected file-system or drive errors, and Apple Diagnostics when the evidence points to hardware. A disk-space visualizer such as DaisyDisk is useful for locating large files, but it is not proof that deleting caches will make every Mac faster. This symptom-first approach costs nothing for the built-in tools and avoids risky “cleaner” actions that do not address the real cause.

What is the best software for diagnosing a slow Mac?

There is no single Mac optimizer that reliably fixes every slowdown. Slowness can come from a process using too much CPU, memory pressure, insufficient startup-disk space, a damaged file system, problematic login items, an incompatible app, or failing hardware. The most effective software is therefore a sequence of focused tools, beginning with those already included in macOS.

Tool Best for What it tells or does Cost and availability Important limit
Activity Monitor High CPU use, memory pressure, or an unexplained background process Live CPU, memory, energy, disk and process data; can create Sample Process, Spindump, System Diagnostics and Spotlight Diagnostics reports Built into macOS You must interpret which processes matter; do not terminate unfamiliar system processes casually
macOS Storage settings Low free space on the startup disk Storage categories and macOS recommendations Built into macOS Shows where space is used but does not prove that storage caused all slowness
Disk Utility Suspected file-system or storage-device errors Verifies a volume and attempts repairs Built into macOS Back up first; files may need recovery if errors cannot be repaired
Apple Diagnostics Possible memory, logic-board, sensor or other hardware faults Runs a startup hardware check and supplies a reference code if a problem is found Built into the Mac startup environment A result may require service, and startup steps differ between Apple silicon and Intel models
DaisyDisk Finding unusually large files and folders Interactive disk map with file-size inspection; you choose what to delete Vendor-listed $9.99 one-time lifetime license at the time covered here; verify current price and macOS compatibility It is a storage-analysis utility, not a general diagnostic suite or automatic performance fix

Use the table as a decision rule rather than installing everything. Built-in tools are the sensible starting point because they are available immediately and each tests a different cause. Add a visualizer only when the storage view does not make the largest files obvious.

How do I check whether an app or process is slowing my Mac?

Activity Monitor is the fastest way to identify a runaway application or background process. It reports current resource use, so leave it open while the slowdown is happening rather than relying on a later snapshot.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Inspect CPU activity

  1. Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor.
  2. Select the CPU tab and click the % CPU column to sort from highest to lowest.
  3. Watch the list for several moments. A demanding task that spikes briefly may be normal; a process that remains at the top while you are doing little else deserves investigation.
  4. Select only an app or process you recognize and no longer need, click the stop button in the toolbar, and choose Quit. If it does not respond, use Force Quit only for that known app.

Do not kill an unfamiliar system process simply because its name looks technical. macOS services can be essential to security, graphics, networking or file operations, and stopping one can cause data loss or a new problem. First note the process name, the app that launched it and what you were doing when the spike appeared.

Read memory pressure instead of chasing “free RAM”

Choose the Memory tab and look at the memory-pressure graph. Apple describes green pressure as efficient use of RAM, yellow as a sign that the Mac might eventually need more memory, and red as an indication that it needs more RAM. The graph incorporates free memory, swap rate, wired memory and cached files, so the amount labeled “free” is not a performance score.

“When you have free or unused memory, your computer performance does not necessarily improve.” — Apple Support, Activity Monitor guide

Use the process list to find the applications consuming the most memory, but close work you can safely reopen rather than deleting files at random. If pressure remains yellow or red during your normal workload, the durable solution may be reducing simultaneous workloads, using lighter applications or moving to a Mac with more memory; removing caches does not create additional RAM.

Generate a report for support

Activity Monitor can collect diagnostic reports when the cause is not obvious. Select a relevant process, open the toolbar’s action menu, and choose the available report option such as Sample Process or Spindump. The app can also produce System Diagnostics and Spotlight Diagnostics reports. Save the report with the date, the symptom and the time it occurred so Apple Support or a repair technician can correlate it with other evidence.

How do I tell whether low storage is causing the slowdown?

Insufficient startup-disk space can make macOS sluggish, especially when applications need temporary files or when the system has little room for memory swap. Storage usage is a plausible cause, not an automatic diagnosis, so check it before deleting anything.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Use macOS Storage recommendations first

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  2. Select General > Storage and wait for the categories to finish calculating.
  3. Review the largest categories and the recommendations macOS presents.
  4. Open the relevant category, identify files you recognize, and remove only items you no longer need.
  5. For large files you must keep, move them to another disk or suitable external storage, confirm the copy opens, and then remove the original from the startup disk.

Emptying space is not the same as repairing a disk. Keep personal documents, application libraries and backups until you have verified another copy. If the Storage panel is still calculating, allow it to finish; category totals can change while macOS indexes files.

When is a disk-space visualizer useful?

DaisyDisk is relevant when the built-in categories do not answer the practical question, “Which folders are using all the space?” It presents an interactive map, lets you inspect file sizes and leaves deletion to you instead of automatically removing data. The vendor listed a $9.99 one-time lifetime license at the time covered by this article; price, supported macOS versions and terms can change, so confirm them before purchase.

Use such a visualizer for discovery: locate old disk images, large media folders, forgotten installers or duplicate archives, then decide manually what can go. Grant only the permissions needed to inspect the locations you intend to scan. Do not treat a colorful map or a claimed amount of recoverable space as independent evidence of a speed increase.

How do I check and repair suspected disk errors?

Use Disk Utility when you see file-copy failures, repeated hangs during disk access, unexplained read errors, or other signs that the file system or storage device may be unhealthy. It is a repair tool, not a general speed optimizer.

  1. Make a current backup of important data before attempting repair. If the disk is deteriorating, prioritize copying irreplaceable files over repeated repair attempts.
  2. Open Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility.
  3. Choose View > Show All Devices so you can distinguish the physical device, containers and volumes.
  4. Select the relevant volume, container or device and click First Aid, then confirm Run.
  5. Read the result. A successful check or repair addresses the reported structure; it does not guarantee that an aging drive will remain reliable.
  6. If Disk Utility reports errors it cannot repair, stop treating the Mac as fixed. Preserve the backup, follow Apple’s recovery guidance or contact Apple or an appropriate repair provider.

Apple warns that files may need recovery when Disk Utility finds errors it cannot repair. A repair that completes can also expose an underlying hardware problem, so continue monitoring for recurring errors rather than assuming a one-time success proves the drive is healthy.

How do I isolate login items that make startup slow?

If the Mac is responsive after a while but unusually slow or unstable immediately after login, a login item or background helper is a useful suspect. Apple’s isolation method is to record the original list, remove the items, restart, and add them back one at a time.

  1. Open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions (the exact grouping can vary by macOS release).
  2. Record or photograph the current login items and allowed background activity before changing anything.
  3. Remove or disable the items you can identify, then restart the Mac.
  4. Test the startup time and the symptom that prompted the investigation.
  5. Re-enable or add items back individually, restarting between changes when practical.
  6. When the problem returns, investigate that app’s update, settings or compatibility with your macOS version; do not leave unrelated security or synchronization components disabled.

This method distinguishes a startup conflict from a general CPU, memory or storage shortage. It also gives you a reversible change history, which is safer than deleting application support folders whose purpose you do not know.

How do I test for a hardware fault?

Run Apple Diagnostics when software checks do not explain crashes, freezes, charging problems, display artifacts, fan behavior or other symptoms that could come from a physical component. The test can indicate which component may be involved and provides a reference code for service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple silicon procedure

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Press and hold the power button until the startup options screen appears.
  3. Release the button, then hold Command-D to start Apple Diagnostics.
  4. Follow the on-screen test and record every reference code and message.

Intel procedure

  1. Shut down the Mac.
  2. Turn it on and immediately hold the D key.
  3. Release the key when the diagnostics interface appears and follow its instructions.
  4. Record the reference code before restarting.

Startup behavior can vary with the Mac model, firmware and macOS version. If the test reports a problem, or if the same symptom remains despite a clean result, provide the reference code and a description of what happens to Apple or an appropriate repair provider. Diagnostics narrow the field; they do not replace a physical inspection or data backup.

Which Mac diagnostic tool should I choose for a specific symptom?

Symptom or question First choice Next action
One app makes the fan run and the Mac lag Activity Monitor, CPU tab Quit the recognized app, update it, or investigate what task it is performing
Apps pause and the Memory graph is yellow or red Activity Monitor, Memory tab Reduce concurrent workloads and assess whether the Mac needs more RAM
The startup disk is nearly full System Settings > General > Storage Move files to verified external storage or delete unneeded data; use a visualizer if locations are unclear
Files fail to copy or the disk reports errors Disk Utility Back up first, run First Aid, and escalate unrepairable errors
Startup is slow only after login Login Items & Extensions settings Remove items temporarily and add them back individually
Crashes, hardware-like symptoms or persistent unexplained faults Apple Diagnostics Save the reference code and arrange service if the problem continues
You cannot find what is consuming disk space DaisyDisk or another disk-space visualizer Inspect large files and choose deletions yourself; verify current licensing and compatibility

This matching prevents a common mistake: using a storage cleaner for a CPU problem, or running disk repair when the real issue is a login helper. Diagnose the category first, then make the smallest reversible change that tests your theory.

What should I avoid when trying to speed up a Mac?

  • Do not equate free RAM with speed. macOS uses memory for caches and balances several factors in its pressure graph.
  • Do not delete every cache or temporary file. The evidence here does not establish a universal performance gain from routine cache cleaning, and some caches are rebuilt automatically.
  • Do not terminate unknown processes. Record the name and investigate its parent application before stopping it.
  • Do not run Disk Utility repair without a current backup. An unrepairable error can leave files needing recovery.
  • Do not trust a storage map as proof of a speed fix. Finding large files solves a capacity problem only after you safely remove or move them.
  • Do not disable every login item permanently. Some provide security, backup, synchronization or accessibility functions you still need.
  • Do not treat a clean Apple Diagnostics result as a guarantee. Intermittent faults can require service even when the one-time test reports no code.

What is a safe end-to-end troubleshooting workflow?

Work from the least disruptive observation to the most consequential repair. Keep notes so you can undo changes and give a technician a useful timeline.

  1. Describe the trigger. Note whether the slowdown occurs at startup, during one app, during file access, on battery power, or all the time.
  2. Observe Activity Monitor. Check CPU and Memory while the symptom is present; capture a diagnostic report if the pattern is unclear.
  3. Check storage capacity. Review System Settings > General > Storage and move or remove only verified, unnecessary files.
  4. Test login items. Use the recorded-list, restart and one-at-a-time method if startup is the distinctive problem.
  5. Check the disk. Back up, then run Disk Utility First Aid when errors or failed reads point to the storage layer.
  6. Run Apple Diagnostics. Use the processor-specific startup method when hardware remains a plausible cause, and save the reference code.
  7. Escalate with evidence. Supply Activity Monitor reports, storage observations, Disk Utility results, diagnostic codes, model details and the dates of the symptoms.

Apple summarizes the broad problem accurately: “When your Mac is running slowly, there are a number of potential causes that you can check.” Treat that as a troubleshooting map, not an instruction to install a cleaner before identifying the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I compare third-party Mac performance software?

Compare tools by purpose and behavior, not by the size of a claimed cleanup number. A responsible comparison asks:

  • Does the tool diagnose CPU, memory, storage capacity, file-system integrity or hardware, and which of those does it actually support?
  • Is an equivalent function already built into macOS?
  • Does it show evidence and let you decide, or does it make automatic deletions or repairs?
  • Does it support your Mac’s processor and macOS release?
  • What permissions does it request, and can you revoke them after scanning?
  • Is the price a one-time license, subscription or time-limited offer, and what are the current terms?

On the evidence available here, DaisyDisk has a narrow, legitimate role: making disk usage easier to understand. It should complement, not replace, Activity Monitor, Storage settings, Disk Utility or Apple Diagnostics. No independently published statistic establishes how much any diagnostic or cleaner app improves Mac performance, so avoid promises framed as guaranteed percentage gains or universal speedups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Activity Monitor tell me whether I should uninstall an app?

It can show that an app or helper is consuming CPU or memory, but it cannot determine whether you still need the app. Identify the parent application, check whether the behavior is expected for the task you are doing, and use the developer’s normal uninstall method if you decide to remove it.

Will deleting old downloads make my Mac faster?

Deleting or moving large files can relieve a genuinely crowded startup disk, but it will not fix a CPU-heavy process, memory pressure or failing hardware. Verify that you have another copy and that the files are no longer needed before removing them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I give Apple Support about a slowdown?

Provide the Mac model and macOS version, when the symptom began, what action triggers it, Activity Monitor observations or reports, available storage, Disk Utility results and any Apple Diagnostics reference code. A short timeline is more useful than a claim that the Mac is simply “slow.”

Can a disk-space visualizer repair a damaged drive?

No. A visualizer explains where capacity is being used and may help you choose files to move or delete. File-system verification and repair belong to Disk Utility, while physical faults require Apple Diagnostics and potentially service.
