Steam is the easiest default for most Steam Deck owners because its store, library, controller settings, updates, and Proton compatibility path are built into SteamOS. That convenience is not a guarantee that every Steam game runs well. Choose GOG when DRM-free ownership and offline installers matter, itch.io for Linux-native independent games, Epic Games Store for recurring free offers when you accept extra setup, and Humble only after checking exactly what a particular offer delivers. The important decision is made at the game level: a Linux build, a Windows build running through Proton or Wine, launcher requirements, anti-cheat, controls, and the redemption key all affect whether a purchase is practical on Linux or Deck.
Which game store works best on Steam Deck?
For the least setup, buy from Steam. Valve designed the Deck interface so that finding, buying, installing, updating, and launching games happen in one handheld-focused environment, and SteamOS includes Proton for many Windows releases. Steam is therefore the strongest general recommendation, not because its catalog is universally compatible, but because the compatibility information and installation workflow are visible before and after purchase.

These are places to obtain games, not guarantees that every game in a catalog runs on Linux. A storefront can sell a Linux-native build, a Windows build intended for Proton, or a title that depends on a launcher or service that does not work on Deck.
How should I read Steam Deck compatibility labels?
Open the game’s page on Valve’s official Deck Verified information and treat the label as a practical pre-purchase signal. Valve uses four categories: Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown. Ratings can change as a game, Proton, or an anti-cheat system is updated.

- Playable: The game runs, but you may need to select a community layout, open an on-screen keyboard, adjust text size, use a touchscreen, or accept another manageable issue.
- Unsupported: Valve found a blocking problem under its review criteria. That is a warning to avoid an assumption of playability, not a claim that no workaround can ever exist.
- Unknown: Valve has not completed its check. Unknown is not the same as broken or working; look for the developer’s Linux notes and current player reports before buying.
Do not transfer a Steam rating to a copy purchased elsewhere. A GOG or Epic release can use a different executable, launcher, update channel, or anti-cheat configuration, so Valve’s label for the Steam build may not describe it.
What is the difference between a Linux build and a Windows game using Proton?
A Linux-native build is compiled and packaged for Linux. A Windows build through Proton uses Valve’s compatibility layer to translate Windows graphics, input, audio, and system calls on Linux. Both can be good experiences, but they have different maintenance and failure modes.

Native builds avoid a translation layer, yet they can lag behind the Windows release, omit features, or receive fewer updates. Proton often lets a Windows release run with the same content as Windows, but a game update, third-party launcher, video codec, or kernel-level anti-cheat change can break compatibility. Check whether the store listing supplies a Linux download or only Windows files, and whether the developer documents controller and display support.
Is GOG the best DRM-free option for Linux?
GOG is the clearest choice when you want DRM-free installers and the ability to keep offline copies. GOG’s official description emphasizes that it does not want to control how customers use their games, and its catalog includes a Linux filter and many classic titles.
Do not confuse a Linux game build with a Linux version of GOG’s GALAXY client. The current GALAXY page advertises downloads for Windows and Mac. On Linux or SteamOS, a separate community launcher such as Heroic can connect to a GOG library, or you can install a downloaded installer manually when the game and its dependencies permit it.
For a Deck purchase, inspect the exact GOG listing for operating-system files, controller expectations, and whether the game needs an older runtime. A DRM-free installer does not automatically become a convenient Game Mode application; you may need to add the installed executable as a non-Steam game and configure controls.
GOG’s About page advertises full refunds within 30 days. Treat that as a high-level statement and read the current refund terms for exclusions, technical conditions, and regional rights before relying on it.

Can I play my Epic games on Linux?
Often, but not universally. Epic advertises a weekly free-game offer on its free-games page. Claiming a title costs nothing during the offer window, but the store’s Windows distribution and the game’s own services still determine whether it is useful on Linux or Deck.
Heroic Games Launcher can sign in to Epic accounts, install compatible games, and use Wine or Proton runners on Linux and SteamOS. It is a launcher and library manager, not a replacement store: ownership remains with Epic, and Epic’s account, download, and entitlement systems still apply.
- Install Heroic through the Steam Deck’s Discover software center or your Linux distribution’s supported package route.
- Sign in to the Epic account that owns the game and allow the launcher to load your library.
- Choose a Wine or Proton runner and an install location with enough space.
- Read the game’s notes for launcher dependencies, required codecs, and controller support before launching.
- If a title uses anti-cheat, verify that the developer enables its Linux or Proton configuration. Heroic cannot make a game work when the game’s service rejects the compatibility environment.
Anti-cheat is the most important reason not to infer compatibility from a free offer. A single-player game may work while a competitive multiplayer title refuses to connect. Updates can also change behavior, so keep a backup plan for games you must play online.

itch.io is one of the best discovery sources for Linux indie games, but its catalog is not a uniform technical platform. Start with the site’s Linux games filter, then open the individual project page and inspect the downloadable files, architecture, installation instructions, and input requirements.
The optional itch app has a Linux download and can manage downloads and updates. A creator may instead provide a portable archive, an AppImage, a script, or only a Windows build. Read the project’s control notes: keyboard-only games, tiny text, fixed window sizes, or mouse-heavy interfaces can be awkward on a Deck even when the executable launches.
For a native Linux release, add the game to Steam as a non-Steam application if you want a Game Mode shortcut. For a Windows-only itch release, try Proton or Wine, but preserve the creator’s folder structure and follow any dependency instructions. Heroic lists itch.io integration as planned rather than an available feature, so do not expect one launcher to manage every itch purchase today.
Will a Humble bundle give me a Steam key?
Not necessarily. Humble offers differ: one may provide a Steam key, another platform key, or a direct download. A bundle’s branding or price does not tell you which redemption method applies, and a key’s destination affects both installation and refunds.

Before paying, open the exact offer and verify:
- the redemption platform and whether the key is for Steam, another account, or a direct installer;
- the operating-system files supplied, including any Linux download;
- regional activation limits and an expiration date, if shown;
- whether individual items are redeemable separately or bundled into one entitlement;
- the publisher’s launcher, account, or anti-cheat requirements.
Lutris documents connecting a Linux library to Humble, GOG, and Steam, but that connectivity does not establish how every current Humble purchase is delivered. Heroic lists Humble integration as planned. If Linux support is the reason you are buying, treat the offer page and the game’s own documentation as authoritative for that specific transaction.
Are Heroic and Lutris stores?
No. Heroic and Lutris are launchers or library managers that help you install and run games obtained from other services. They do not replace the underlying store’s ownership, refund, account, or regional rules.
Heroic focuses on libraries from Epic and GOG and can use Wine or Proton runners on Linux and SteamOS. Lutris can connect multiple libraries, including Humble, GOG, and Steam, and provides configurable installation scripts and runners. This flexibility is useful when a game needs a particular Wine version, environment variable, or launch argument, but it adds setup choices that Steam’s integrated Deck workflow normally hides.
Use a launcher when the store has no native Linux client, when you want one library view, or when a title needs a custom runner. Keep the original store account and receipt information: changing launchers does not move ownership or create a new refund path.
How do the stores compare on refunds and ownership?
Steam’s usual store-game refund window is within two weeks of purchase and less than two hours played, subject to Valve’s qualifications and any additional local consumer rights. A Steam key bought from a third party does not automatically have the same refund route as a direct Steam purchase.
DRM-free GOG installers can be archived and installed without a continuous client, but the purchase remains governed by GOG’s terms. Epic claims remain tied to an Epic account even when launched through Heroic. itch.io purchases depend on the creator’s delivery and the platform’s terms. Humble refunds and key replacement depend on the particular transaction and redemption status.

What should I check before buying any Linux or Deck game?
- Identify the build. Is there a Linux download, a Windows build intended for Proton, or an installer that needs a separate client?
- Check the current compatibility signal. On Steam, read the Verified, Playable, Unsupported, or Unknown label. Elsewhere, read the developer’s Linux and controller notes.
- Look for service blockers. Multiplayer anti-cheat, launchers, account checks, and required background services can matter more than graphics performance.
- Confirm controls and display. Check gamepad support, text size, virtual keyboard needs, ultrawide or external-display behavior, and whether a mouse is required.

How much setup should I expect on each store?

Epic: install and sign in through Heroic, select a runner, and allow time for launcher and prefix setup. A game can install successfully yet fail at sign-in or multiplayer because of anti-cheat.
itch.io: setup ranges from one-click app downloads to extracting an archive and making a file executable. Creator documentation is more important than the store filter alone.
Humble: setup begins with identifying the delivery format. A Steam key follows Steam’s process; a direct Linux archive follows the publisher’s instructions; another key may require a different account and launcher.

What storage and accessories matter for a Deck storefront library?
Valve specifies a UHS-I microSD slot supporting SDXC in the Steam Deck hardware. Do Steam Deck compatibility ratings stay the same forever?
No. Valve can change a game’s category after updates to the title, Proton, launchers, or anti-cheat. Recheck the current store page when returning to an older purchase.
Can I refund a Steam key bought from a key reseller through Valve?
Do not assume so. Valve’s normal refund process applies to eligible purchases made through Steam, while a separately obtained key is generally handled by the seller that issued it.
Does a Linux-native game automatically support the Deck’s controls?
