The best laptop under $600 depends on your operating system and workload. For a general-purpose Windows laptop, the ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605NAQ-ES51 is the strongest match in this group at a listed $599. Students who qualify for Apple education pricing can consider the MacBook Neo at $599; ChromeOS buyers should look for a sale on the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714, while the Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 suits people who want a detachable tablet-style device. These are different kinds of recommendations, not interchangeable machines.

Best general-purpose Windows laptop: ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605

RTINGS names the ASUS Vivobook 16 M1605 its best tested laptop under $600 and specifies configuration M1605NAQ-ES51: Ryzen 5 150, 8GB memory, and a 512GB SSD, listed at $599 in its guide. Its 16-inch display gives room for spreadsheets, documents, and side-by-side windows. RTINGS describes the plastic body as sturdy and the keyboard as comfortable, while noting that the display looks slightly washed out.

The 8GB of RAM can limit heavier multitasking, though RTINGS says this configuration has a SO-DIMM slot for memory expansion. Check the exact unit’s specifications and upgrade terms before relying on that option.

Important test and port caveats

RTINGS tested an older Vivobook configuration with a Ryzen 5 7530U, not the newer Ryzen 5 150 model named in its recommendation. Its approximately eight-hour battery result belongs to that older test configuration and should not be treated as a verified runtime for the newer SKU. RTINGS also says ASUS does not list the two USB-C ports as supporting video output; use the laptop’s HDMI port for an external display.

Best for eligible students: Apple MacBook Neo

RTINGS lists the 2026 MacBook Neo with an A18 Pro chip as its student pick under $600, at $599 through Apple’s education store. That price is conditional on education pricing. RTINGS prefers it to the ASUS for eligible students who are comfortable with macOS, citing a lighter, more premium build and better display, speakers, webcam, and touchpad, as well as longer battery life.

Rank #2
Samsung 14" Galaxy Chromebook Go Laptop PC Computer, Intel Celeron N4500 Processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB Storage, ChromeOS, XE340XDA-KA2US, Student Laptop, Silver

  • YOUR PHONE AND CHROMEBOOK WORK BETTER TOGETHER: Easily transfer files between devices, and control your phone right from your Chromebook.

Its key limitation is 8GB of non-upgradeable memory. RTINGS considers that sufficient for typical schoolwork and light multitasking, but students who routinely run many demanding apps should assess their workload carefully before choosing it.

Best Chromebook when discounted: Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714

The Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714 (2024) is RTINGS’ Chromebook pick, but its $700 base MSRP is above this article’s budget. It belongs on a sub-$600 shortlist only when the exact configuration is currently discounted below that threshold. The base configuration pairs an Intel Core Ultra 5 115U with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage.

RTINGS highlights its compact convertible design, FHD+ screen, comfortable keyboard, 1440p webcam, and battery life sufficient for a typical day. The decisive question is software compatibility: Windows and macOS applications generally do not run on ChromeOS. Check that the apps required for work or school have suitable browser or Android versions.

Best detachable Chromebook: Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5

The Lenovo Chromebook Duet 5 (2021) is a tablet-style Chromebook with a detachable keyboard, a 13.3-inch OLED screen, and pen input. RTINGS reports 10–11 hours of battery life for this model; treat that as a review result, not a guaranteed runtime for every user. The stylus may be sold separately, and the model’s current availability and price need to be checked.

Its tablet format works well for browsing and media, but the keyboard is cramped and the small touchpad can be unresponsive. RTINGS also notes two USB-C ports, no 3.5mm headphone jack, and speakers it describes as boxy. It is a less natural fit if you expect to type for long stretches every day.

How to compare listings before buying

  1. Match the exact SKU. A model family can include different processors, memory amounts, screens, and prices. Compare the listing’s full model or configuration number with the specification you intend to buy.
  2. Confirm the operating system runs your apps. Choose Windows when broad desktop-software compatibility matters; choose a Chromebook only if browser or Android apps cover your needs. A MacBook requires comfort with macOS and any school or workplace software constraints.
  3. Check memory and upgradeability. Note both the installed RAM and whether it can be expanded. The ASUS configuration above has an upgrade path according to RTINGS; the MacBook Neo’s 8GB is not upgradeable.
  4. Check storage and screen details. Compare SSD capacity, display size and resolution, and whether the device’s size suits your portability needs. Do not assume every configuration in a product family has the same components.
  5. Treat battery claims as model- and test-specific. Review results may involve a different configuration or testing conditions than the listing you are considering. Real runtime also varies with workload and settings.
  6. Verify the price and what is included. Check the current price, stock, keyboard inclusion, and whether accessories such as a stylus are separate. A recommendation above budget only qualifies when its live price is actually below $600.

Are there other sub-$600 deals?

TechRadar Pro reported a time-sensitive deal snapshot that included an ASUS Vivobook 14 with Snapdragon X, 16GB memory, and a 512GB SSD for $548 at Best Buy, and a Dell 15 with a Core i7-1355U, 512GB SSD, 15.6-inch 120Hz Full HD display, and 8GB RAM for $549.99 at Dell. Those are reported deal prices, not guarantees of current availability; verify the precise SKU and live listing. TechRadar Pro flagged the Dell’s 8GB memory as a significant drawback for 2026.

As general context, Tom’s Guide considers around $600 a reasonable target for everyday work, school, and entertainment, and recommends checking processor, memory, storage, and screen quality. Its guidance also distinguishes ChromeOS for web-based work from Windows when broader software compatibility is needed.
