Start with JBL’s two-stage sound calibration, then use bass level 3 and rear surround level MID as your reference. Keep virtual Dolby Atmos effects on for Dolby Atmos programmes, and make only one change at a time. Those settings are documented starting points—not a universal “best” profile—because room shape, speaker placement, programme mix and personal taste all change the result.
The JBL Bar 800MK2 is a 7.1-channel system with detachable wireless surround speakers, a 10-inch (260 mm) subwoofer, MultiBeam 3.0, Dolby Atmos and DTS Virtual:X. JBL lists those as product features, not as proof that one control position will suit every room. Its detachable speakers are specified for up to 10 hours of playtime, with actual battery life varying by content and volume. You can verify the model and feature list on JBL’s UK Bar 800MK2 product page.

| Use case | Starting configuration | What to adjust |
|---|---|---|
| Movies and TV | Calibration complete; bass LVL 3; rear surround MID; virtual Dolby Atmos on for Atmos tracks | Raise or lower bass and rear level one step at a time |
| Music | Calibration complete; bass LVL 3; rear surround MID when both rears are undocked | Change bass or surround level to taste; there is no documented music preset |
| Dialogue | Leave PureVoice 2.0 available for automatic processing | There is no documented user-settable PureVoice level |
| Night Listening | Use the JBL One app with both rears undocked and placed close to you | The bar and subwoofer mute; nearby playback comes from the detachable speakers |
Use these values as a baseline after calibration. They are the defaults described in the JBL Bar 800MK2 Owner’s Manual, Global English V6, not laboratory-validated targets.
Calibrate the Bar 800MK2 before changing sound controls
Calibration is the most important step because it accounts for your listening zone and the final positions of the detachable speakers. JBL describes the process as optimizing surround sound for the listening environment; it does not promise a particular subjective result.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Prepare the room and speakers
- Choose a quiet room so the calibration tones are not masked by conversation, appliances or traffic.
- Keep the soundbar and both detachable rear speakers in sight of one another during the procedure.
- Put the left and right speakers on their corresponding sides. Reversing them undermines the channel mapping.
- Have the detachable speakers charged and available for both stages.
Run listening-zone calibration first
- Place both detachable rears beside your normal listening position.
- Start the Bar 800MK2 sound-calibration routine using the controls described in the owner’s manual.
- Remain quiet and in the intended listening area while the tones play.
Run speaker-position calibration second
- Move the rears to their intended positions for everyday use.
- Run the speaker-position calibration stage again.
- Wait for the routine to finish before judging bass, surround level or Atmos height.
JBL support specifically lists the Bar 800MK2 as compatible with this calibration feature. The support explanation is available at JBL’s Sound Calibration help page. If you later move the rears substantially, repeat both stages rather than trying to compensate only with the rear-level control.
Best movie settings
Use the documented defaults as your first movie profile
After calibration, set bass to LVL 3 and detachable rear surround to MID. Bass offers five positions, LVL 1 through LVL 5, with LVL 3 as the factory default. When both rears are undocked, the remote cycles their surround output through LOW, MID, HIGH and MUTE; MID is the default.
Start a familiar scene containing music, effects and speech. Listen at a comfortable, repeatable volume, then change only one control. If explosions or a musical score overwhelm voices, lower bass one step before changing the rears. If the surround field feels too weak, raise the rear level from MID to HIGH; if effects pull attention away from the screen, try LOW. MUTE removes the detachable rear contribution for a direct comparison.
Dolby Atmos material
Leave virtual Dolby Atmos effects on when the programme actually carries Dolby Atmos audio. The manual says the height effects apply only to Dolby Atmos content and are on by default. With an Atmos soundtrack, switching the effect off removes the intended height-processing contribution, so evaluate it with the effect enabled first.
Non-Atmos movies and shows
For stereo, 5.1 or other non-Atmos sources, the manual does not establish a universally superior on/off position for the virtual effect. Compare both settings with the same scene and playback level. Choose the version that gives you a stable centre image and convincing envelopment without hollow or exaggerated ambience. That choice is a listening preference, not a documented JBL recommendation.

Place the rears for the result you want
Rear level cannot correct a speaker that is hidden behind furniture, placed on the wrong side or aimed at a reflective corner. Keep the left rear on the listener’s left and the right rear on the listener’s right, with a clear line of sight to the bar during calibration. When you change their positions, rerun the two-stage process before deciding that a different level is needed.

The reviewed manual documents bass and rear-surround adjustment, but it does not document a dedicated music mode, genre preset or music-specific equalizer curve. Do not enter a fabricated EQ recipe expecting it to be an official Bar 800MK2 setting.
A neutral starting point
- Complete listening-zone and speaker-position calibration.
- Set bass to LVL 3.
- Set rear surround to MID when both detachable speakers are undocked.
- Play a well-recorded track with vocals, bass and acoustic instruments.
- Change bass by one level if the low end masks vocals or lacks weight.
- Change the rear level only after deciding whether you want a wider, more enveloping presentation.
For a focused two-channel impression, LOW or MUTE on the rears can reduce the amount of room-filling ambience. For live recordings or orchestral material, MID or HIGH may make the room feel more enveloping. Neither choice is a manufacturer-certified music target; use the setting that preserves the recording’s balance at your normal listening distance.
Personalize in the JBL One app
JBL says the JBL One app can personalize audio settings and provide access to music services. App screens can change with software updates, so use the current labels shown in your installed version rather than relying on a fixed menu path. The app is a place to make and store available personal adjustments; it does not create evidence for a universal bass or surround number.
Dialogue settings: what PureVoice 2.0 does—and does not let you adjust
JBL describes PureVoice 2.0 as automatically raising or optimizing dialogue according to ambient sound in the scene and the soundbar volume. In practical terms, it is intended to keep speech intelligible when a soundtrack becomes dense or loud.

The owner’s manual reviewed for this model does not document a separate PureVoice intensity, dialogue boost or numbered slider. Therefore, do not look for an official “dialogue level 1–5” setting or claim that a particular number is best. Enable and assess the automatic feature as provided, then use the documented bass and rear controls for remaining balance problems.
If voices are still hard to hear
- Confirm that the source is not sending an unexpectedly low-volume or incompatible track.
- Lower bass one step if low-frequency effects are masking speech.
- Reduce rear surround from MID to LOW if ambient effects compete with the centre image.
- Compare the same line at a consistent volume before and after each single change.
- If the issue is a lip-sync delay rather than volume, use the documented audio-sync adjustment instead of changing tone controls.
Night Listening: the model-specific quiet option
Night Listening is the clearest Bar 800MK2 configuration for late viewing when you need to reduce sound reaching the rest of the room. It is controlled through the JBL One app and requires both detachable speakers to be undocked.
- Undock both detachable surround speakers.
- Move them close to your listening position.
- Open the JBL One app and select Night Listening using the current interface labels.
- Start playback and confirm that the nearby speakers carry the programme.
The manual states that Night Listening mutes the soundbar and subwoofer, leaving playback through the nearby detachable speakers. Because the main bar and subwoofer are muted, this is not simply a lower-bass version of normal surround; it is a different speaker arrangement intended for close listening. Keep the rears positioned safely and within their wireless operating range.
Documented controls and defaults
| Control | Documented behaviour | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Sound calibration | Two stages: listening zone, then speaker position | Run in a quiet room with correct left/right placement; repeat after major repositioning |
| Virtual Dolby Atmos effects | On by default; height effects apply only to Dolby Atmos content | Keep on for Atmos; compare on/off for other sources by preference |
| Bass | LVL 1–LVL 5; default LVL 3 | Use LVL 3 as the reference and move one level at a time |
| Detachable rear surround | LOW, MID, HIGH or MUTE when both rears are undocked; default MID | Start at MID after calibration; change for room, placement and programme |
| Night Listening | JBL One app; both rears undocked; bar and subwoofer muted | Place rears near the listener for quiet close-range playback |
| Audio sync | Adjustment documented on the remote and in the JBL One app | Use only when speech and picture are out of sync |
| PureVoice 2.0 | Automatic dialogue optimization described by JBL; no manual level specified | Evaluate its automatic behaviour; do not invent a slider value |
How to tune without chasing your tail
Human hearing is easily influenced by small volume differences. Use a repeatable comparison method so a louder setting does not automatically seem better.

Troubleshooting common results
The sound is boomy
Move bass from LVL 3 down one step, replay the same scene and check whether voices become clearer. If the problem changes dramatically after moving the subwoofer or furniture, rerun calibration; do not keep lowering bass to compensate for a new room layout.
Surround is too obvious
Try MID to LOW, or MUTE for a direct baseline, with both rears undocked. Check that the speakers are on the correct sides and not aimed into a nearby hard surface. Recalibrate after correcting placement.
The room feels flat
Confirm that both rears are undocked, charged and connected. If they have moved, run listening-zone calibration followed by speaker-position calibration. Then compare MID with HIGH at the same volume. On non-Atmos material, test the virtual Atmos effect on and off rather than assuming it should always be enabled.

Atmos height seems absent
Verify that the source is delivering Dolby Atmos. JBL’s manual limits the height effects to Dolby Atmos content, so an ordinary stereo or non-Atmos 5.1 track will not provide the same height information. Keep the effect on for a confirmed Atmos programme and check speaker visibility and placement.
Dialogue is late or early
This is an audio/video timing issue, not a bass or PureVoice setting. Use the Bar 800MK2 audio-sync adjustment on the remote or in the JBL One app, making small changes while watching clear lip movements.

Night Listening does not behave as expected
Night Listening requires both detachable speakers to be undocked and places playback on those nearby speakers while muting the bar and subwoofer. If the main system continues playing, recheck that both speakers are undocked and that Night Listening is active in the app’s current interface.
What the specifications do—and do not—tell you
The 7.1-channel designation, 10-inch subwoofer, MultiBeam 3.0, Dolby Atmos, DTS Virtual:X and up-to-10-hour detachable-speaker figure describe the product’s architecture and advertised capability. They do not establish an ideal bass level, rear level or Atmos preference for your room. The playtime figure is a manufacturer specification and varies with content and volume; it is not an independent battery test.
Recommended Free Tools
No named independent statistic or laboratory measurement establishes a universal “best” Bar 800MK2 profile. The defensible approach is therefore to use JBL’s documented defaults after calibration, then make controlled, preference-based adjustments.
A practical profile you can save as a reference
- Everyday movies: calibrated system, bass LVL 3, rear MID, virtual Atmos on for Atmos tracks.
- Action scenes: begin with the everyday profile; try bass LVL 4 only if the room remains controlled and dialogue is clear.
- Dialogue-heavy TV: keep PureVoice 2.0 automatic, then try bass LVL 2 or rear LOW if effects mask speech.
- Music: calibrated system, bass LVL 3 and rear MID; adjust by recording and taste because no dedicated music preset is documented.
- Late-night viewing: Night Listening in the JBL One app, both rears undocked and placed close to you.
The first line is the official-default reference. The other examples are listening strategies, not guaranteed settings; apply only the change that solves the problem you can hear.
When to recalibrate
- You move the soundbar, subwoofer or either detachable rear.
- You switch the left and right rear positions.
- You change the main seating location or substantially rearrange the room.
- The surround image becomes lopsided after furniture or acoustic changes.
- You have adjusted several controls and can no longer identify which change helped.
Resetting to a calibrated LVL 3/MID baseline makes later decisions understandable. Without that baseline, changing bass, rears and placement together can hide the cause of an improvement or problem.
Bottom line
For most Bar 800MK2 owners, the most reliable sequence is simple: perform the two-stage calibration correctly, start at bass LVL 3 and rear MID, keep virtual Dolby Atmos effects on for genuine Atmos content, and let PureVoice 2.0 handle its automatic dialogue optimization. Use one-step changes for personal taste, and choose Night Listening when you need the bar and subwoofer muted and the detachable speakers close to you. These settings are useful starting points, not a single manufacturer-certified answer for every room.
