For a small Bambu AMS pod, airtight tote or DIY dry box, buy a compact digital hygrometer with a published relative-humidity (RH) accuracy and dimensions that fit your enclosure. Bambu Lab’s XF001 is the most purpose-sized option for a circular desiccant box: it is 45 mm in diameter, 14 mm thick, rated to ±5% RH and refreshes every 10 seconds. Call3D’s round and vertical AMS gauges offer the same stated ±5% RH accuracy. For an integrated box, Prusa’s USS Drybox uses a TPM40 sensor rated ±3% RH and ±1°C. For several spools and tighter control, Dr. Storage’s XC-3D68 cabinet specifies ±2% RH accuracy, a controlled 5–15% RH range and 40,000 logged records.

A hygrometer tells you whether storage is getting wetter or drier; it does not automatically dry filament unless it is part of a cabinet or drying system that explicitly includes that function. Treat compact ±5% instruments as threshold and trend monitors, not laboratory calibration devices.

Which hygrometer should you choose?

Use case Best fit Stated RH specification What it does
Small circular AMS pod or desiccant box Bambu Lab XF001 ±5% RH; 45 mm diameter × 14 mm thick Compact display, 10-second updates; monitors humidity
AMS enclosure where round or vertical mounting is preferred Call3D round or vertical AMS hygrometer ±5% RH Monitors humidity; choose the shape that clears the spool and lid
One or two spools with an integrated storage box Prusa USS Drybox TPM40: ±3% RH and ±1°C Integrated low-humidity storage while printing; it does not dry wet filament
Six to eight spools with logged, controlled humidity Dr. Storage XC-3D68 5–15% RH controlled range; ±2% RH; 40,000 records Cabinet storage and data logging
Large cabinet storage Eureka AW-3D80P 81-liter cabinet; listed as ≤10% RH with ±5% RH range Cabinet storage with a digital hygrometer

The table separates a sensor from a storage appliance. XF001 and Call3D are small gauges you place in an existing enclosure. The USS Drybox is a complete storage product with an integrated sensor, while the XC-3D68 and AW-3D80P are cabinet-scale choices. None of the compact gauges should be treated as a humidity controller.

What a filament hygrometer measures

Hygrometers display relative humidity, the percentage measure used to judge how much moisture is present in the air inside the box. Filament absorbs moisture from that air at different rates. A reading is therefore a storage condition, not a direct measurement of water inside the plastic.

Use the number to answer three practical questions: Is the enclosure drier than the room, is the desiccant still working, and is the reading below the material’s storage limit? A stable downward trend after closing the lid indicates that the enclosure and desiccant are doing their job. A rising trend after days of closure usually means the desiccant is saturated, the seal leaks, or the box is being opened frequently.

Every sensor has an error band. A ±5% RH specification means a displayed 20% RH could represent roughly 15–25% RH under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. That is useful for deciding whether a box is broadly dry, but it is not precise enough to certify a narrow laboratory set point. A ±2–3% RH sensor narrows that uncertainty when a cabinet is intended to hold a tightly controlled range.

Best compact hygrometers for AMS pods and DIY dry boxes

Bambu Lab XF001: purpose-sized for a circular desiccant box

The XF001 is the clearest fit when physical space is the main constraint. Its circular body measures 45 mm across and 14 mm thick, so it can sit in a small AMS pod, airtight tote or 3D-printed desiccant box without consuming the space of a conventional weather station.

  • Accuracy: ±5% RH.
  • Update interval: one measurement every 10 seconds.
  • Form factor: round, 45 mm diameter and 14 mm thick.
  • Role: monitoring only; the specification does not make it a dryer or humidity controller.

The 10-second refresh is quick enough to see the reading settle after you close a lid, but it is not a continuous data logger. Do not interpret one transient value immediately after opening the box as the enclosure’s long-term humidity. Close the container, wait for several update cycles, and judge the settled trend.

Call3D round and vertical AMS units: choose the shape that fits

Call3D offers both round and vertical AMS hygrometers, each rated at ±5% RH. Their principal advantage is mounting flexibility: a round unit can occupy a circular recess, while a vertical unit can use a narrow side or wall location where a flat disc would interfere with a spool.

Integrated dry-box option

Prusa USS Drybox: better sensor accuracy, but not a dryer

The USS Drybox includes a TPM40 hygrometer rated at ±3% RH and ±1°C. Prusa describes it as designed “to keep filament in a low-humidity environment during printing.” That makes it an integrated storage-and-feed choice for a user who wants the box, sensor and printing workflow together instead of adding a gauge to an existing tote.

The crucial limitation is explicit: “The Drybox does not dry filament. If the filament is already moist, it must be pre-dried in a professional drying oven first.” Put wet filament through a drying step before placing it in the box; use the hygrometer afterward to verify that storage remains low humidity. A lower reading on the display cannot remove moisture that is already bound in the filament.

The TPM40’s ±3% RH claim is tighter than the ±5% specification of the compact AMS gauges. It is still a stated product accuracy, not an independent calibration result, so use it for storage decisions rather than treating it as a reference instrument.

Cabinet hygrometers for multiple spools

Dr. Storage XC-3D68: controlled range and long logging history

The XC-3D68 is aimed at users who need more than a display on a tote. Its specification calls for controlled storage from 5% to 15% RH, ±2% RH sensor accuracy, capacity for six to eight spools and 40,000 logged records.

The ±2% claim is the tightest accuracy in this comparison. The logging capacity also changes how you use the instrument: instead of checking a number only when you open the cabinet, you can inspect whether humidity rises overnight, after a door opening, or as desiccant performance declines. The cabinet’s 5–15% controlled range is a target for the cabinet system, not a universal requirement for every filament type.

Eureka AW-3D80P: large-volume cabinet

Eureka’s AW-3D80P is specified as an 81-liter cabinet with a digital hygrometer and a listed “≤10% RH ±5% RH” range. That wording combines a low-humidity target with a ±5% RH accuracy statement; read it exactly as a product specification rather than converting it into a guaranteed 5% set point.

An 81-liter enclosure is physically suited to a larger spool collection than an AMS pod. Confirm the cabinet’s current control behavior, power requirements and logging features before purchase, because those details are not established by the stated capacity and hygrometer specification alone.

Humidity targets by filament material

Prusa’s storage table gives the following maximum recommended RH values. These are storage targets, not universal drying recipes or proof that a spool is dry internally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Filament Maximum recommended storage RH Additional guidance
PLA Below 30% RH Short-term tolerance up to 40% RH
ABS Below 30% RH Ideally below 15% RH
ASA Below 30% RH Ideally below 10% RH
PETG Below 20% RH None stated
TPU Below 20% RH Ideally below 15% RH
PVA Below 20% RH None stated
PC Below 20% RH None stated
BVOH Below 20% RH None stated

Use the strictest material on a shared shelf as your operating target. For example, a box holding PETG and PLA should be managed below 20% RH if you want the PETG target to govern. If a material has an “ideally” lower value, regard that as the preferred goal rather than silently replacing the published maximum.

How to install and use a hygrometer

  1. Measure the enclosure. Record the clear diameter, height and depth around spools, desiccant containers and the filament path. For a circular pod, compare the available recess with the XF001’s 45 mm diameter and 14 mm thickness. For other gauges, use the manufacturer’s current dimensions.
  2. Choose the accuracy level. Select a ±5% RH compact gauge for trend monitoring. Choose a ±3% or ±2% specification when your storage system is designed around a narrower humidity range and the extra certainty matters.
  3. Place the sensor in representative air. Keep the sensing openings exposed to the main enclosure air. Do not bury the gauge in desiccant, press it against a wall or place it directly beside a fresh desiccant pack, where the local air may not represent the space around the spool.
  4. Load dry desiccant and close the enclosure. The hygrometer reports conditions; it does not restore wet filament. Use desiccant appropriate to your container and close the lid or door fully.
  5. Allow the reading to settle. On the XF001, readings update every 10 seconds. Wait through multiple updates after closing the box and judge the stable value rather than the first number.
  6. Set your material threshold. Use the table above: below 30% RH for PLA, below 20% RH for PETG, TPU, PVA, PC and BVOH, and the lower “ideally” values when applicable.
  7. Record the trend. Write down the date, material and reading, or use a cabinet logger such as the XC-3D68’s stated 40,000-record capacity. A slowly rising line is an earlier warning than a single high reading.
  8. Recheck after opening or moving spools. Opening the enclosure exchanges air with the room. Take a fresh settled reading before deciding that the desiccant or sensor has failed.

Sensor placement when filament feeds directly to a printer

A hygrometer needs to fit without blocking the spool or pinching filament. In an AMS pod, a thin round gauge can use otherwise unused lid or floor space; a vertical gauge may fit along a side wall. In a dry box that feeds a printer, route the filament first, then position the sensor where it cannot rub against the spool, snag the filament or interfere with the seal.

The hygrometer and the feed-through solve different problems. The sensor tells you the air condition inside the box; the feed-through determines whether the spool can remain enclosed while printing. A box may show a good RH value yet still admit room air through an oversized or poorly sealed filament exit.

How much accuracy do you really need?

For desiccant monitoring, ±5% RH is generally practical because the decision is usually binary: the enclosure is comfortably below the material limit, or it is not. If a ±5% gauge displays 12% RH, the possible error band remains below the 20% PETG target. If it displays 18% RH, the upper edge of the band could reach about 23%, so you should treat that as borderline rather than claim a guaranteed pass.

A cabinet intended to hold 5–15% RH benefits from the XC-3D68’s stated ±2% accuracy. The USS Drybox’s ±3% specification is a middle choice for integrated storage. No independent calibrated test results or universal accuracy standard are established for these products, so compare the manufacturer-stated figures on equal terms and avoid mixing readings from different sensors as if they were identical references.

Stated RH accuracy ±5% ±3% ±2% ±5% as listed
Controls humidity Not stated; treat as monitor only Storage product; drying wet filament is explicitly excluded Controlled 5–15% RH range Listed ≤10% RH range

Do not infer a drying cycle from the presence of a hygrometer. The only explicit drying qualification in the supplied product statements is Prusa’s warning that the USS Drybox does not dry already-moist filament. For the other products, the listed sensor and storage specifications do not establish a drying function.

Troubleshooting common readings

The RH stays high after adding desiccant

  • Check that the lid, gasket and filament exit are actually closed; a leak can overwhelm the desiccant.
  • Consider whether the desiccant has already absorbed moisture. Replace or regenerate it according to its own instructions.
  • Let the sensor settle through several update cycles before judging the result.
  • If the filament was already moist, remember that a hygrometer cannot remove water from it. Use a separate drying process before storage.

The number jumps whenever you open the lid

Opening the enclosure exchanges its dry air with room air. Close it again and wait for a stable reading. Compare readings taken under the same closed conditions rather than using the peak value during an open-lid inspection.

Two hygrometers disagree

Different accuracy bands and sensor locations can explain a modest difference. A ±5% unit and a ±3% unit can legally display different values while both remain within their stated specifications. Move them side by side in the same enclosure, allow them to settle, and treat the comparison as a consistency check—not a calibration certificate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reading is low but prints still show moisture symptoms

RH is the air condition around the spool, not a measurement of moisture inside the polymer. Check the filament’s previous storage history and use an appropriate pre-drying process. Also verify that the sensor is not sitting in an unusually dry pocket next to desiccant while the spool area is wetter.

Buying checklist

  • Footprint: round, vertical or cabinet-integrated form that clears the spool and lid.
  • Stated RH accuracy: ±5% for general monitoring; ±3% or ±2% for tighter targets.
  • Refresh or logging: a 10-second update is useful for settling checks; long-term logging is valuable for cabinets.
  • Range and resolution: confirm that the current model displays the low RH values relevant to your filament.
  • Power and battery: verify the current listing; the specifications summarized here do not establish battery life or power requirements for every model.
  • Humidity control: distinguish a display-only gauge from a cabinet that actively maintains a stated range.
  • Printing workflow: if filament feeds directly to the printer, confirm the feed-through, clearance and seal rather than assuming an AMS label guarantees compatibility.
  • Availability: prices, stock, sellers and regional availability change, so check those details at the time of purchase.

Practical recommendations by reader

You have a Bambu AMS pod

Start with the XF001 if its 45 mm by 14 mm circular footprint fits your pod. Its ±5% RH accuracy is suitable for confirming that desiccant is lowering humidity. A Call3D round or vertical unit is an alternative when its shape fits your available space better; verify dimensions before ordering.

You use an airtight tote or homemade dry box

Choose a compact ±5% gauge and place it where it sees the air around the spool. Spend as much attention on the lid seal and filament exit as on the display. The instrument is most useful when you record a settled reading after closing the tote and again after several days.

You want one integrated box for printing

The USS Drybox is the relevant option in this comparison because its TPM40 sensor is integrated and specified at ±3% RH and ±1°C. Pre-dry any moist filament separately; the box is for maintaining low humidity during printing, not for performing that drying step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You store six or more spools

Move to a cabinet rather than crowding several gauges into small boxes. The XC-3D68 provides the clearest published control and logging figures: 5–15% RH, ±2% RH, six-to-eight spool capacity and 40,000 records. The 81-liter AW-3D80P is the larger-volume alternative, with its listed ≤10% RH and ±5% RH specification.

Bottom line

Buy the smallest gauge that fits your enclosure and has a stated accuracy. The XF001 is the straightforward circular AMS choice; Call3D covers round and vertical layouts at the same ±5% RH rating. Choose the USS Drybox when you want integrated storage and printing, but dry wet filament first. Choose the XC-3D68 when controlled 5–15% RH storage, tighter ±2% accuracy and historical logging justify a cabinet, or the AW-3D80P when 81-liter capacity is the priority.
