There is a practical difference between an Android TV device, a Google TV device and a cast-only streaming dongle. Proton documents support for Chromecast with Google TV and Android-based Google TV devices. A cast-only Chromecast model requires VPN installation on the router instead of running the app on the Chromecast itself. NordVPN’s documentation specifically includes Nvidia Shield and Android TV-based devices.
Write down the model before choosing a service. If the device has no Google Play interface and no supported alternative store, a native-TV comparison may not apply.

4. Prioritize remote-friendly controls

Use the protocol selector only when you have a reason to change it. Start with the app’s automatic or recommended setting, then test another option if the connection repeatedly fails or a network blocks the default transport.
Free plan versus streaming use
