There is no single best replacement for Google Photos. Choose Ente Photos if you want a managed service with end-to-end encryption and photo-focused tools; Immich if you want to run the library yourself; iCloud Photos for an Apple household; Amazon Photos if you already qualify for Prime storage; Proton Drive for encrypted general-purpose files; or OneDrive if Microsoft 365 is already part of your budget. The right choice depends on who can access your pictures, how much organization you need, which phones and computers you use, and whether you are willing to maintain your own server.
This guide compares those services on privacy, search, automatic mobile backup, sharing, platforms, storage, cost, self-hosting work, and migration. Prices are the published figures checked on October 25, 2026, and can vary by country, tax, or plan changes.

What should you look for in a Google Photos alternative?
Start with the way your library will be protected, not with the free-storage number. A service can keep a second copy of your camera roll while still giving its provider access to files, or it can encrypt content so the provider cannot read it while offering fewer photo-specific conveniences. Decide which of those trade-offs you can accept before comparing plans.
Privacy and provider access
End-to-end encryption (E2EE) means your device encrypts a file before upload and only you, or people you explicitly authorize, can decrypt it. Ente says photos and videos are encrypted before they leave the device. Proton describes its Drive storage as end-to-end encrypted and says Proton cannot access the data. iCloud can extend end-to-end encryption through Advanced Data Protection, but Apple users should verify that their devices and account meet its compatibility requirements. Immich keeps the library on infrastructure you control, while Amazon Photos and OneDrive are cloud services whose privacy models differ from those E2EE options.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Photo organization versus ordinary file storage
Photo-first products generally provide a timeline, albums, face recognition, search, memories, and sharing designed around images. Ente and Immich list those capabilities. Proton Drive and OneDrive can back up photos and videos reliably, but they are general cloud drives; their browsing and discovery tools are less specialized. Amazon Photos is strongest when your main requirement is storing full-resolution still images rather than advanced editing or broad media management.
Backup behavior and recovery
Check whether the mobile app uploads automatically, whether it can continue when the app is not open, and how you recover after a lost phone. Ente, Immich, iCloud Photos, Amazon Photos, Proton Drive, and OneDrive all describe automatic or continuous backup workflows, but the controls and destinations differ. A synchronized library is not the same as an independent backup: deleting a picture in one place can remove it everywhere, and a self-hosted server is still only one copy until you create another.
Recommended Free Tools
Sharing, family use, and device coverage
Families often need shared albums or a shared library in addition to private originals. Ente, iCloud Photos, and Immich list sharing features; iCloud also offers shared libraries. Check that every person’s phone, browser, and desktop operating system is supported. Ente publishes apps for Android, iOS, web, Windows, macOS, and Linux; Immich provides Android, iOS, and web/server access; iCloud provides Apple devices plus browser and Windows access.
Migration and export
A replacement is only useful if you can leave it later. Export the original library, retain an independent copy, and test metadata, albums, and video playback in the destination. Ente documents importing a Google Takeout export through its desktop application. Immich publishes backup and restore documentation, but you should validate your own import rather than assuming every album or date will map perfectly.

Is Ente Photos the best managed, privacy-first choice?
Ente Photos is the strongest all-round replacement when you want a hosted service that still treats the photo library as private. It encrypts photos and videos before upload, yet includes the photo features many people expect from a dedicated library: automatic backup, search, face recognition, sharing, Memories, and open-source applications.

- Automatic backup from Android and iOS.
- Search, face recognition, Memories, and sharing rather than a simple folder browser.
- Apps and clients for Android, iOS, web, Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- An optional self-hosting route if you later want to run the service yourself.
- A documented desktop workflow for importing a Google Takeout export.
How much storage costs
The free tier is 10 GB. Paid tiers published on October 25, 2026 are 50 GB for $2.49 per month ($29.88 per year), 200 GB for $4.99 per month ($59.88 per year), 1 TB for $9.99 per month ($119.88 per year), and 2 TB for $19.99 per month ($239.88 per year). Those finite caps make it important to estimate your existing library and future camera use before switching.

Where it falls short
Ente does not match every advanced AI-editing capability associated with Google Photos. Its privacy model also means you should protect your account credentials and recovery information carefully: the provider cannot simply inspect encrypted originals to fix an access problem for you.
Is Immich the best self-hosted Google Photos alternative?
Immich is the best fit when control and local storage matter more than turnkey administration. The software is open source and free, with Android and iOS apps, a web interface, automatic phone backup, a timeline, albums, sharing, face recognition, and search.
What you must supply
- A NAS or server with enough disk capacity for originals and future growth.
- Electricity and a reliable network connection.
- Operating-system and Immich updates, account security, and monitoring.
- Recovery procedures and an independent backup in a different location or system.
The software price being zero does not make the complete system free. Disks eventually need replacement, and your time is part of the cost. A self-hosted server is one copy; if its disks fail, a power event damages the machine, or an error deletes the library, you need a second backup to recover.
Who should avoid it?
Choose a managed service instead if you do not want to administer a server, troubleshoot upgrades, or design a backup plan. Immich is powerful for a technically confident household, but it shifts responsibility for uptime, security, and restoration from a provider to you.
Is Apple Photos with iCloud best for an Apple household?
For a family already using iPhones, iPads, and Macs, Apple Photos with iCloud usually creates the least friction. Apple says iCloud automatically keeps photos, files, and more backed up and available across devices. Originals remain in high resolution in iCloud while devices can use space-saving versions, and the service includes shared albums, shared libraries, browser access, and Windows access.
US iCloud+ prices
Apple’s US prices checked October 25, 2026 are 50 GB for $0.99 per month, 200 GB for $2.99, 2 TB for $9.99, 6 TB for $29.99, and 12 TB for $59.99. These are monthly prices; confirm the amount shown for your country before subscribing.
Encryption qualification
Advanced Data Protection can extend end-to-end encryption to more iCloud data, but it is not a universal switch that every device and account can use automatically. Confirm compatibility and understand the recovery requirements before relying on it for your only copy. If a family member uses older hardware or a different operating system, test shared-library access before moving everyone.

Is Amazon Photos worth using if you have Prime?
Amazon Photos is compelling for eligible Prime members who mainly need unlimited full-resolution photo storage. The comparison information describes video capacity as separate, so a library containing many long videos can require additional planning.
It does not provide end-to-end encryption. That makes it a different privacy choice from Ente or Proton Drive, even when the backup is convenient. Current Prime eligibility, non-Prime storage, and pricing should be checked on Amazon’s account page before you move a large library; do not assume a Prime benefit applies to every household member or region.
Amazon Photos is most sensible when you already pay for Prime and your priority is retaining still-photo originals. If you need advanced photo discovery, encrypted storage, or a single plan that treats video and other files equally, compare it with the other options here.
Is Proton Drive a good encrypted alternative for photos?
Proton Drive is the better choice when photos are part of a broader encrypted file collection rather than a standalone visual library. Proton says you can store any file, back up every photo, and share with chosen people while Proton itself cannot access the data.
Plans published for the US
On October 25, 2026, Proton listed 5 GB free, Drive Plus with 200 GB for $4.99 per month, Proton Unlimited with 500 GB for $12.99, Duo with 2 TB for $19.99, and Family with 3 TB for $29.99. The larger plans can make sense when the same encrypted space will hold documents and other files as well as pictures.
Photo-library trade-off
Proton Drive’s organization is more general-purpose than Ente’s or Immich’s. If you depend on face recognition, a rich timeline, or Memories, confirm that its current apps meet those needs before making it your primary photo browser. It remains attractive when encryption and one place for many file types matter more than specialized discovery.
Is OneDrive a practical replacement for Microsoft 365 users?
OneDrive is practical when you already pay for Microsoft 365 and want your camera roll, documents, and work files in one account. Microsoft describes automatic backup for files, photos, and videos across devices. Its mobile app includes automatic photo and video backup, Personal Vault, ransomware detection, file recovery, and curated photo collections.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
OneDrive is a general cloud drive rather than a photo-first library. Compare its photo browsing and search with your expectations before abandoning a dedicated service, especially if you rely on face-based discovery, Memories, or family photo workflows. Its value often comes from the bundle: the storage may be economical when Microsoft 365 benefits are already useful, but buying it solely for photo organization may offer less than a specialist service.

How do you compare privacy, search, and ecosystem lock-in?
Use a simple three-question test: who can decrypt the originals, can you find a picture without remembering its folder, and what happens if you leave the ecosystem?
Who can access the originals?
- Managed E2EE: Ente and Proton Drive are designed so the provider cannot read encrypted content. Ente still supplies photo-oriented search and recognition; Proton emphasizes general file storage.
- Self-hosted: Immich puts administration and data location in your hands, but you also carry responsibility for server security and backups.
- Account-based cloud: iCloud, Amazon Photos, and OneDrive provide convenient hosted access. iCloud’s Advanced Data Protection can change the encryption posture when supported; Amazon Photos does not provide E2EE according to the comparison; OneDrive’s strengths are security and recovery features rather than a photo-specific privacy promise.
How much organization do you need?
For a visual timeline, face recognition, Memories, and albums, start with Ente or Immich. For shared Apple libraries, iCloud is the natural fit. For encrypted folders that also contain contracts, scans, and other files, Proton Drive is more coherent. OneDrive and Amazon Photos can handle camera-roll backup, but they are less compelling if sophisticated photo discovery is your main reason to switch.
How dependent are you on one ecosystem?
iCloud is most convenient when every important device is Apple hardware, while OneDrive is most valuable inside Microsoft 365. Ente and Immich cover more varied operating systems, and Proton Drive is oriented around the Proton account rather than a phone manufacturer. Before committing, sign in from a browser and a non-primary device so you know the library remains usable if your hardware changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you move a Google Photos library without losing dates or albums?
Migration is safest as a staged copy, not a single switch. Keep the original account intact until the destination and a second backup have been checked.

- Export the originals. Use Google Takeout to create an export of the complete library. Download every part and keep the export unchanged as your first independent copy.
- Preserve the export structure. Do not rename or reorganize files until you have verified dates, locations, and album information. Keep any accompanying metadata files with the media they describe.
- Import into the new service. Ente documents a desktop import workflow for a Google Takeout export. For Immich, follow its official backup and restore documentation and adapt the process to your server. Cloud-drive services may require their own upload tools rather than a photo-library importer.
- Wait for processing to finish. Large imports can take time. Leave the computer or server connected, and confirm that the destination reports the expected item count before judging the migration complete.
- Spot-check dates and locations. Open photos from different years, cameras, and time zones. Verify that capture dates, locations, portrait orientation, and edited-versus-original relationships look correct.
- Check albums and sharing. Open old albums, confirm their membership, and test a shared album with another account if family access matters. Album structures do not always translate identically between services.
- Test video playback. Play short clips and longer recordings on a phone and in a browser. A file can upload successfully while still needing a compatibility check.
- Create a second backup. Copy the imported originals to an independent disk or another storage system. The new cloud account or server is not the second copy by itself.
- Only then change the old library. Keep the original Google Photos library until the destination, export, and independent backup all pass your checks. Deleting first removes your easiest recovery path.
What are the most common failure modes?
Running out of space during the first upload
Video growth can be faster than expected, and some plans count originals rather than compressed previews. Measure the export, add headroom for new phone uploads, and choose a tier that will not be full immediately.
Assuming synchronization is a backup
Synchronization mirrors changes; it does not protect you from accidental deletion, account loss, disk failure, or a damaged server. Keep the original export and an independent backup, and periodically verify that both can actually be opened.

Choosing encryption without planning account recovery
With end-to-end encryption, a lost password or recovery method can be more consequential because the provider cannot read your originals for you. Store recovery information securely and test sign-in on a secondary device before moving the entire library.
Discovering that family workflows do not transfer
Shared albums, shared libraries, comments, and links are service-specific. Recreate one representative family album first, test invitations and permissions, and only then migrate the rest.

Immich’s free software does not remove the need for updates, monitoring, physical protection, and a second backup. If you cannot schedule those tasks, a managed service may be the safer practical choice even when its subscription costs more.
Which service should you choose?
- Choose Ente Photos for the closest managed, privacy-first experience with search, face recognition, Memories, sharing, and broad desktop coverage.
- Choose Immich when you are comfortable operating a NAS or server and want the library under your control.
- Choose iCloud Photos when your household is already centered on Apple devices and shared libraries.
- Choose Amazon Photos when eligible Prime membership makes unlimited full-resolution still-photo storage the main requirement.
- Choose Proton Drive when end-to-end encrypted storage for photos and other files is more important than a specialist photo interface.
- Choose OneDrive when Microsoft 365 already provides value and you prefer one account for documents, photos, recovery, and security tools.
Whichever route you take, keep an export and an independent backup. That is the decision that protects your memories after the subscription, device, or provider changes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use two photo services at the same time?
Yes. Many people use one service for daily browsing and sharing while keeping an encrypted archive or self-hosted copy elsewhere. Configure the second destination deliberately and verify that it receives originals rather than only optimized previews.
Will a migration preserve edits made inside Google Photos?
Treat edited versions as separate items until you verify them. Open representative edited photos and videos after import, and retain the untouched export so you can recover an original if an edit or album relationship does not transfer.
Do self-hosted libraries work when the server is offline?
The server must be reachable for new uploads and remote browsing. Keep an independent copy that you can access without the server, and test restoration before relying on the system while traveling.
What should I check before inviting family members?
Confirm each person can sign in from their own phone and browser, then test whether they can view, upload, or download exactly what you intend. Shared albums and libraries use service-specific permissions, so verify those controls with a small test set first.
