Azure AI Content Safety is the closest broadly documented replacement for most teams leaving Google Perspective API. It analyzes text and images, applies configurable harm categories and severity levels, and supports blocklists and prompt-safety controls. AWS-native teams handling English text can use Amazon Comprehend DetectToxicContent, while OpenAI directs users of its legacy text-moderation models to omni-moderation. Hive and Sightengine are additional multimodal candidates, but their current limits, language coverage, pricing and performance require verification with each vendor.

Perspective remains available until December 31, 2026, while new usage and quota requests stopped after February 2026. Because its score represents perceived conversation impact rather than a universal toxicity probability, migration requires new thresholds and validation instead of a simple endpoint swap.

Why do I need a Perspective API replacement now?

Google has placed Perspective API on a fixed sunset path. The official notice says, “The service will remain active until December 31, 2026.” New usage and quota requests stopped after February 2026, so a project that needs additional capacity or is starting today should not build around Perspective.

Existing integrations can continue during the remaining service period, but they still need a transition plan. A moderation provider is part of your enforcement policy: changing it can alter which comments are blocked, queued for review or published. Start by exporting your current thresholds, labels, review rules and historical decisions so you can compare a replacement against the behavior your users already see.

What is different about Perspective scores?

Perspective’s FAQ describes its output as a machine-learning score for “the perceived impact a comment might have on a conversation.” That is not necessarily the probability that a text belongs to a fixed toxic-content class. A replacement may instead return category confidence, severity bands or separate scores for several harms.

For example, a provider can mark hate, sexual, self-harm and violence independently, each at a multiseverity level. Another can return one overall toxicity score alongside category confidences. Equal numeric thresholds therefore do not mean equal moderation behavior.

  • Score meaning: document whether a number is an impact estimate, a category confidence, a severity level or a policy decision.
  • Taxonomy: map your existing labels to the new provider’s categories, including cases with no direct equivalent.
  • Actions: keep “allow,” “review” and “block” as your own policy states rather than inheriting a vendor’s default action.
  • Calibration: tune thresholds on representative data from your service, including slang, quoted abuse, reclaimed language and non-English text if applicable.

Which alternatives are documented for toxicity detection?

The following comparison uses capabilities and limits documented in the available vendor material. “Not stated” means the cited material did not establish a value; it is not evidence that the feature is absent.

Service Modality Language information Output model Documented limits or controls Best fit
Perspective API Text comments Not stated here Perceived conversation-impact score Service ends December 31, 2026; new usage and quota requests stopped after February 2026 Legacy integrations during transition
Azure AI Content Safety Text and images Check the supported-language list for your categories Harm categories with multiseverity levels 0, 2, 4 and 6 Blocklists, custom categories and prompt-related safety features Mixed text/image workloads and Azure environments
Amazon Comprehend DetectToxicContent Text English only in the cited developer guide Category confidence scores plus an overall toxicity score Up to 10 strings per request; each string up to 1 KB; synchronous operation AWS-native English text moderation
OpenAI omni-moderation Verify current modalities before adopting Not stated in the cited deprecation table Replacement family for legacy text-moderation models; current schema must be verified Exact categories, language performance and pricing were not established in the cited material Teams already using OpenAI APIs
Hive Secondary comparisons describe text, image, video and audio Not stated Vendor-specific classifications Current plans, limits and service levels require vendor verification Potentially broad multimodal pipelines
Sightengine Secondary comparisons describe text, image and video Not stated Vendor-specific classifications Self-serve operations are reported, but current terms require verification Potential text, image and video moderation

Is Azure AI Content Safety the closest general-purpose replacement?

For teams that moderate both user text and images, Azure AI Content Safety is the strongest documented general-purpose candidate in this comparison. It offers separate harm categories, multiseverity results, blocklists, custom categories and prompt-safety features, so you can express a policy more precisely than a single impact threshold.

How its severity model changes your policy

Microsoft’s migration material describes levels 0, 2, 4 and 6 for hate, sexual, self-harm and violence categories. Treat those levels as ordered policy signals, not as percentages. A practical policy might send level 0 to automatic approval, route an intermediate level to human review and block the highest level, but the boundaries must be chosen using your own labeled examples.

When Azure is a good fit

  • Your application already runs in Azure and can keep moderation traffic in an approved region.
  • You need image as well as text analysis.
  • You want centrally managed blocklists or custom categories in addition to model scores.
  • You need prompt-related safety controls for an application that accepts instructions or generated content.

What Azure does not provide automatically

It does not reproduce Perspective’s perceived-impact number. Existing code that compares one score with a threshold needs an adapter that translates category severities into your own decision states. You also need to confirm language availability and regional data-handling terms for every category you plan to use.

Is Amazon Comprehend DetectToxicContent best for AWS applications?

Amazon Comprehend DetectToxicContent is a sensible choice when moderation is limited to English text and the rest of your stack is on AWS. Its synchronous operation accepts a list of strings and returns category confidence scores together with an overall toxicity score.

Limits to design for

The current AWS developer guide states that toxicity detection supports only English. One request can contain no more than 10 strings, and each string is limited to 1 KB. Enforce those constraints before calling the service: split long comments according to a documented policy, preserve the original text for reviewers, and batch no more than ten items per request.

How to use its scores safely

Do not assume the overall toxicity score is interchangeable with Perspective’s impact score. Store the overall value and category confidences separately, then calibrate action thresholds on your own moderation set. If a comment exceeds the size limit or contains unsupported language, route it to a defined fallback such as manual review or a second provider rather than silently allowing it.

Should I migrate legacy text moderation to OpenAI omni-moderation?

OpenAI’s official deprecation table names omni-moderation as the recommended replacement for the legacy text-moderation-007, text-moderation-stable and text-moderation-latest models. That makes it a logical starting point for applications already built around those model identifiers.

The available deprecation material does not establish current category coverage, language performance, exact response fields or pricing. Before committing, inspect the current API documentation for the model version you will deploy and run your own evaluation set. In particular, verify whether the input modalities and language behavior match your existing policy; do not infer them from the word “omni.”

Are Hive or Sightengine viable multimodal alternatives?

Secondary 2026 comparisons describe Hive as covering text, image, video and audio moderation, and Sightengine as covering text, image and video with self-serve operations plans. They are useful candidates when one provider must handle more than comments and still images.

Those descriptions do not establish current prices, supported languages, latency commitments, quotas or benchmark performance. Request a written capability and data-processing summary from each vendor, test representative samples, and confirm retention and regional-processing options before moving production traffic. Treat any plan or price seen in a comparison article as provisional until the provider confirms it.

How should I choose a replacement for my workload?

Make the decision against your actual policy and traffic rather than a generic “accuracy” claim. Score each candidate on the following dimensions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Modality and content path

List every input you moderate: comments, usernames, images, video frames, audio transcripts, prompts and model outputs. A text-only API may be adequate for comments but leave a separate image or video gap. Decide whether you want one multimodal vendor or specialized services connected by a common policy layer.

2. Language and script coverage

Separate languages that an API accepts from languages for which the vendor documents trained and tested behavior. Include code-switching, transliteration, emojis and region-specific slang in your evaluation set. AWS’s cited toxicity guide, for example, explicitly limits this feature to English.

3. Score semantics and explainability

Require a schema that tells reviewers which category caused a decision and how severe it was. Preserve raw scores, model version and policy version so an appeal can be reconstructed after thresholds change.

4. Operational limits

Record maximum bytes or tokens, batch size, synchronous versus asynchronous operation, rate limits, timeout behavior and expected latency. The AWS limits are concrete; other providers may expose different constraints by plan or region. Build validation and retry handling into your adapter instead of discovering limits in production.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Human review and controls

Check for blocklists, custom categories, prompt shields, reviewer queues, audit exports and appeal workflows. A model score without a way to inspect borderline cases can increase rather than reduce moderation risk.

6. Governance and cost

Confirm processing region, retention, encryption, deletion controls, compliance commitments and subcontractors. Compare recurring per-item charges with free allowances, enterprise quotes, egress and the staffing cost of additional human review. No single price comparison in the available material is sufficient for a current budget.

How do I migrate from Perspective API step by step?

Use a parallel migration so your current policy remains available while the new provider is calibrated.

  1. Inventory the existing integration. Record every endpoint, model attribute, threshold, language, timeout, retry rule, cache and downstream action. Capture which scores are shown to moderators and which are only used for automation.
  2. Freeze a representative evaluation set. Sample allowed, reviewed and blocked content from your production categories. Include borderline items, quoted or reported abuse, misspellings, emojis, code-switching and adversarial attempts. Remove unnecessary personal data before sharing samples with a vendor.
  3. Define a provider-neutral schema. Store the original content identifier, provider, model version, category scores, severity, policy decision, timestamp and error state. Keep raw provider responses in restricted storage when your retention policy permits it.
  4. Build an adapter rather than rewriting policy code. Convert each provider’s response into internal states such as allow, review, block and unavailable. Keep threshold configuration outside application code so you can tune it without a redeploy.
  5. Run shadow traffic. Send a copy of eligible requests to the candidate while Perspective remains the production authority. Measure disagreement by category and action, and record latency, timeouts, request-size failures and unsupported-language cases.
  6. Calibrate thresholds. Have trained reviewers label a statistically useful sample of disagreements. Select thresholds separately for automatic blocking and review; a threshold that is acceptable for queueing may be too aggressive for an irreversible block.
  7. Canary the new policy. Enable the replacement for a small percentage of traffic or a low-risk surface. Monitor appeals, user reports, moderator workload, error rates and latency before expanding.
  8. Keep a rollback path. Retain the old adapter and configuration until the replacement has operated through a representative traffic cycle. A rollback should change a feature flag or policy version, not require an emergency code release.
  9. Retire dependencies deliberately. After migration, remove Perspective credentials and quota assumptions, update runbooks and dashboards, and document the final provider’s limits and escalation contacts.

How can I test toxicity detection without a vendor benchmark?

No primary apples-to-apples accuracy or latency benchmark for a specific workload is available here, so your own test set is essential. Evaluate the complete moderation decision, not only a model score.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure false positives and false negatives separately

False positives can suppress legitimate debate, reclaimed language or news reporting. False negatives can expose users to harassment or threats. Report both rates by language, category, severity and content source rather than publishing one blended accuracy number.

Test distribution shifts

Include new slang, spelling obfuscation, long threads, quoted text and rapid bursts of traffic. Re-run the suite after a provider model update, policy change or major product release.

Measure operational behavior

Track p50 and p95 latency, timeout rate, retry volume, payload rejection, quota errors and reviewer queue growth. A model that performs well offline but times out during a traffic spike is not a reliable replacement.

Review explanations

Ask moderators whether category names and severities help them make consistent decisions. If reviewers cannot understand why an item was escalated, improve the policy mapping or retain it for human review rather than hiding the ambiguity.

What migration mistakes cause the most trouble?

  • Copying the old threshold: a numeric Perspective cutoff has no guaranteed meaning in a category-confidence or severity system.
  • Ignoring unsupported inputs: English-only or text-only paths need explicit routing for other languages and modalities.
  • Truncating silently: payload limits can remove the abusive phrase or its surrounding context. Reject, split or review with a visible reason.
  • Using one action for every harm: self-harm, sexual content, violence and insults may require different escalation and retention policies.
  • Skipping shadow mode: immediate cutover hides whether disagreement comes from model behavior, an adapter bug or a changed policy.
  • Forgetting governance: region, retention and reviewer access can be as important as the score when content includes personal information.
  • Treating secondary comparisons as contracts: verify current plan terms, languages, service levels and prices directly with Hive or Sightengine before procurement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should a team start migrating from Perspective API?

Begin while the existing service still handles production traffic so you can run shadow evaluations and retain a rollback path. The work usually includes data preparation, policy remapping, reviewer calibration and operational testing, not just changing an SDK call.

Can I run two toxicity APIs at the same time?

Yes. A common pattern is to keep one provider authoritative while sending mirrored requests to a candidate, then compare normalized decisions and operational metrics. Do not expose the second provider’s result to users until privacy, retention and failure handling are approved.

What should I store for a moderation audit?

Store a content identifier, provider and model version, raw category results where permitted, the policy version, final action, timestamp and any human override. Restrict access and apply a retention period that matches your privacy obligations.

How do I handle content that exceeds an API’s request limit?

Validate size before submission and choose a documented behavior: split at safe boundaries, summarize only when your policy allows it, or send the item to manual review. Preserve the original content and record that the fallback was triggered so an oversized item is never silently treated as safe.
