Proton VPN is PCWorld’s top-ranked free VPN for Android in its September 1, 2026 roundup. It is the clearest choice if you want an uncapped free allowance, but the reviewed comparisons report limited control over server locations. Windscribe and PrivadoVPN are better fits when selecting a country matters more than unlimited data. hide.me and AVG Secure round out PCWorld’s five picks, although their current free-tier advantages need to be checked on the providers’ own sites.
That ranking is an editorial recommendation, not proof that every service meets your personal privacy standard. Free VPN terms change, and the sources reviewed here do not provide current primary audit reports or privacy-policy verification for all five services. Use the comparisons below to narrow your choice, then confirm the app’s present limits, ownership, permissions and privacy terms before connecting.

For most readers, Proton VPN is the starting point because PCWorld placed it first among five free Android recommendations, and current comparisons describe its free tier as unlimited-data. The trade-off is control: TechRadar’s October 2026 table says Proton’s free plan does not let users choose a server location, while Windscribe and PrivadoVPN offer location selection but impose data caps.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
- Want the largest allowance? Proton VPN and hide.me are listed with unlimited free data by TechRadar’s October 19, 2026 comparison.
- Need to select a country or server? PrivadoVPN, Windscribe and hide.me are listed with server choice; Proton is listed without it.
- Need several devices? Windscribe is the only service in that table listed with unlimited device connections.
- Need streaming access? Do not assume a free plan includes it. Proton says guaranteed streaming access is a paid-plan benefit.
These are dated editorial comparisons, not guarantees. Check each provider’s current plan page before relying on a limit or feature.
How do the five recommended VPNs compare?
PCWorld’s article, published September 1, 2026, names Proton VPN, PrivadoVPN, Windscribe Pro, hide.me and AVG Secure, with Proton first. TechRadar’s October 19 table uses a different set for one row: it lists Hotspot Shield Basic instead of AVG Secure. The two lists should not be treated as the same five services.
| Service | Free data reported by TechRadar (October 19, 2026) | Server choice | Device connections |
|---|---|---|---|
| PrivadoVPN Free | 10 GB | Yes | 1 |
| Proton VPN Free | Unlimited | No | 1 |
| Windscribe Free | 15 GB | Yes | Unlimited |
| hide.me Free | Unlimited | Yes | 1 |
| Hotspot Shield Basic | Unlimited | Yes | 1 |
Source and date: TechRadar’s “The best free VPN in 2026,” October 19, 2026. The figures are a secondary-source snapshot. Provider terms can change, and the table does not establish AVG Secure’s current allowance because AVG Secure is not included in this particular comparison.
Which free Android VPN has unlimited data?
TechRadar’s October 2026 comparison reports unlimited free data for Proton VPN, hide.me and Hotspot Shield Basic. Proton is also described as unlimited-data and ad-free by ToolRadar’s Android comparison, updated October 24, 2026. These descriptions are editorial summaries, so verify the allowance in the app or provider terms before using a VPN for sustained video, downloads or tethering.
Proton VPN: unlimited allowance with less location control
Proton is the strongest match for readers who would rather avoid a monthly data ceiling than pick a specific country. ToolRadar characterizes the free Android tier as unlimited-data, ad-free, limited to one device and lacking user-selected countries. TechRadar’s table likewise reports unlimited data, no server choice and one connection.
hide.me: unlimited data and listed server choice
TechRadar lists hide.me Free with unlimited data, server choice and one device connection. The source set does not establish a more specific advantage, speed level or privacy verification for hide.me, so treat those three table values as the useful starting point and recheck the provider’s current terms.

Hotspot Shield Basic appears in TechRadar’s table with unlimited data, server choice and one connection. It is not one of the five services named in PCWorld’s title-matched list, which includes AVG Secure instead. That difference matters when you compare articles: an unlimited entry in one table does not automatically describe every service in another ranking.
Rank #2
- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Which free VPN lets me choose a country?
If location selection matters, the October 2026 table favors PrivadoVPN, Windscribe and hide.me over Proton. The additional control comes with different limits: PrivadoVPN is listed at 10 GB, Windscribe at 15 GB, and hide.me as unlimited.
Windscribe Free
Windscribe is the location-focused option with the largest listed allowance among the capped plans: 15 GB in TechRadar’s table. The same table reports server choice and unlimited device connections. ToolRadar describes Windscribe as a capped option with more location choice, reinforcing the basic trade-off without establishing a specific speed or privacy ranking.
PrivadoVPN Free
PrivadoVPN Free is listed with 10 GB of data, server choice and one device connection. It suits occasional browsing when you need a selectable location and can monitor usage. Heavy video or large downloads can consume 10 GB quickly, so check the in-app counter and current plan terms.
Recommended Free Tools
hide.me Free
hide.me combines the table’s unlimited allowance with server choice, but only one device connection. That combination may be attractive if location control is essential and you normally use one phone. The available comparisons do not provide enough primary evidence to claim a particular privacy or streaming advantage.
What does PCWorld’s five-pick list include?
The title-matched PCWorld article recommends five services after describing testing across PC and Android devices. The ranking belongs to PCWorld; it was not independently reproduced for this article.
1. Proton VPN
PCWorld names Proton first. Proton’s own Android page says the dedicated app supports Android 6.0 or later. The provider says its free plan has no bandwidth or speed limits, but also says streaming services such as Netflix are not guaranteed on the free plan and that guaranteed streaming access is a paid-plan benefit. Those are provider claims, not an independent performance test.
2. PrivadoVPN
PrivadoVPN is PCWorld’s second listed choice. The current TechRadar snapshot gives its free tier 10 GB, selectable servers and one connection. Because free terms are volatile, confirm whether the allowance resets, how locations are defined and what happens after the cap before treating the table as a promise.
Rank #3
- Secure Hold: Our PopSockets adhesive phone grip gives your cell phone a secure, comfortable hold in hand to help prevent drops while texting, taking photos, or scrolling on the go. Designed to stick firmly to most phone cases and devices.
- Hands-Free Made Easy: Easily turn your PopSocket into a phone stand to prop up your phone anywhere, perfect for watching videos, video calls, or following recipes. A must-have phone holder that keeps your device secure and ready for anything.
- Compatibility: Works with all phones, tablets, and Kindles. Sticks best to smooth, hard plastic cases and may not adhere to silicone or textured cases. Easily swap your PopTop to change up your style.
- Black PopSockets: Simple, refined, and endlessly versatile. A timeless essential for any phone.
- Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.
3. Windscribe Pro
PCWorld names Windscribe Pro, while TechRadar labels the free tier “Windscribe Free.” The table reports 15 GB, server choice and unlimited device connections for the free plan. Do not assume the “Pro” label means the paid plan is free; distinguish the article’s recommendation wording from the plan whose limits are actually tabulated.
4. hide.me
hide.me appears in both PCWorld’s five and Cloudwards’ July 7, 2026 Android comparison. TechRadar reports unlimited data, server choice and one connection. The sources do not establish a current independent audit or a guaranteed streaming feature for its free plan.
5. AVG Secure
AVG Secure completes PCWorld’s five. It does not appear as a row in TechRadar’s cited table, which uses Hotspot Shield Basic instead. Consequently, this article cannot assign AVG Secure a current data allowance, location policy or device count without inventing a figure; check its present Android plan page directly.
How should I choose among these free VPNs?
Start with the activity that will consume the service, then apply the constraints in this order.
- Set your data requirement. Occasional email and browsing may fit a 10 GB or 15 GB cap. Frequent video, app updates or large downloads make an unlimited listing more practical, subject to the provider’s current terms.
- Decide whether location selection is essential. A selectable country can matter for testing a regional website or connecting to a nearby server. Proton’s free tier is the notable exception in the October table: it is listed without user-selected locations.
- Count the devices you will actually connect. Windscribe is listed with unlimited device connections; Proton, PrivadoVPN and hide.me are each listed with one. “Unlimited” in a comparison table still does not explain account-sharing rules, so read the provider’s conditions.
- Check the feature you need, not just the data number. Streaming, peer-to-peer use, split tunneling, protocol choices and support can be restricted independently of data. Proton specifically says guaranteed streaming is reserved for paid plans.
- Review privacy evidence separately. A generous allowance or attractive location list does not demonstrate how a company handles logs, legal requests or independent audits.
How do I install and use a free VPN on Android?
Exact labels vary by Android version and app, but the safe setup sequence is consistent.
- Open Google Play and verify the app’s publisher name, recent update date and download listing before installing.
- Install the official app, then create or sign in to an account if the free plan requires one. Do not install an APK from an unverified mirror simply because it promises extra locations or data.
- Read the plan screen before accepting. Record the displayed data allowance, device limit, renewal or reset rule and any feature marked “premium.”
- Tap the app’s connect button. Android will show a system permission dialog for the VPN connection; approve it only when the app and publisher match the service you intended to use.
- Confirm the Android key or VPN indicator appears, then test a normal website and the app’s displayed location. A connection icon alone does not prove that a particular streaming service will work.
- Open the app’s usage or account page periodically, especially on capped plans. Disconnect inside the app when you need normal routing or when troubleshooting a site that rejects VPN traffic.
How can I judge whether a free VPN is trustworthy?
“Trust” in the headline should mean an informed choice, not a blanket guarantee. The available material identifies editorial picks but does not supply current primary audit reports or privacy-policy verification for all five services.
Check the provider’s current privacy documentation
Look for a dated privacy policy that explains connection logs, account information, diagnostic data, retention and disclosure. Note whether the policy applies to the Android app specifically and whether the company describes independent audits. If the language is vague, treat that as an unresolved question rather than proof of wrongdoing or safety.

Inspect Android permissions and behavior
Compare the permissions requested by the installed app with what a VPN needs to operate. Unexpected requests for unrelated data deserve scrutiny. Keep Android and the VPN app updated, and remove an app that no longer receives security updates or that behaves differently from its published description.

Separate editorial testing from verification
PCWorld says its recommendations followed testing across PC and Android devices, but that does not equal an audit of logging practices. Cloudwards’ July 7, 2026 comparison and ToolRadar’s October 24 update are useful secondary references, not substitutes for provider documentation or independent verification.
What are the main limits of free Android VPNs?
Free plans commonly trade one resource for another. In the comparisons here, the clearest trade-offs are data, location control and device count.
- Data ceilings: PrivadoVPN’s listed 10 GB and Windscribe’s 15 GB can be adequate for light use but are finite.
- Reduced location choice: Proton’s unlimited listing comes with no user-selected country in the cited tables.
- Single-device limits: Proton, PrivadoVPN and hide.me are each listed with one connection.
- Feature gating: Proton says guaranteed streaming access is paid-plan territory, even though its free plan has no stated bandwidth or speed limit.
- Changing terms: A table dated October 2026 can become stale; recheck the provider before depending on a limit for travel, work or long downloads.
When should I move to a paid plan?
Consider a paid tier when a free allowance repeatedly runs out, you need a specific country that the free tier does not offer, several devices must stay connected, or a feature such as guaranteed streaming is explicitly reserved for paid users. Upgrade for a documented requirement, not simply because a comparison labels one service “best.” Read the paid plan’s simultaneous-connection rules, refund terms and feature guarantees before paying.
What should I do if the VPN is slow or will not connect?
First disconnect and reconnect inside the app, then switch between the locations the free plan actually permits. On a capped plan, check whether the allowance has been exhausted. If Android shows the VPN indicator but a site fails, test another network and ordinary browser page; some services block VPN endpoints, and a successful tunnel does not guarantee access to every website.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpdate the app and Android, restart the phone, and remove any second VPN profile that could conflict. If the problem persists, consult the provider’s current Android support instructions rather than installing a modified client or importing an unknown configuration file.
What do the other comparisons say?
Cloudwards’ comparison, updated July 7, 2026, also names Proton VPN, PrivadoVPN, hide.me and Windscribe among free Android choices. ToolRadar’s October 24, 2026 update describes Proton as unlimited-data and ad-free with one device and no user-selected countries, and Windscribe as capped with more location choice. These sources broadly support the allowance-versus-control distinction, but neither replaces current provider terms or independent privacy evidence.

Based on the cited October 2026 terms, Proton VPN is the best first try for unlimited free data, while Windscribe or PrivadoVPN make more sense when selectable locations are worth accepting a cap. hide.me is the location-capable unlimited entry in TechRadar’s table; AVG Secure remains a PCWorld pick whose current free details should be verified directly. None of these distinctions alone proves that a service satisfies your privacy standard.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the free VPN limits in the table permanent?
No. The figures are TechRadar’s October 19, 2026 snapshot, and free-plan allowances or device rules can change without matching older articles. Check the provider’s live Android plan screen before starting a long download or trip.
Why does one article list AVG Secure while another lists Hotspot Shield Basic?
They are separate editorial comparisons with different selections. PCWorld’s title-specific five include AVG Secure, while TechRadar’s table uses Hotspot Shield Basic, so an unlimited value shown for one cannot be transferred to the other.
Can I use a free VPN on both Wi-Fi and mobile data?
A VPN app can normally create its tunnel over either connection, but Android may reconnect when you change networks. Test the connection after switching between Wi-Fi and cellular service, and monitor capped-plan usage because both types of traffic count toward the allowance.
Does installing a VPN make every Android app private?
No. The VPN protects traffic routed through its tunnel, but app accounts, permissions, device updates and the VPN provider’s own data practices still matter. Review the provider’s policy and keep Android security updates enabled.
