Best Free Backup Software for Mac in 2026: What You Can Verify

Time Machine is the clearest free backup choice for most Mac users in 2026: it is built into macOS, saves backups to a separate storage destination, and lets you recover files from earlier backups. It covers local recovery, not every disaster: if the backup disk stays beside the Mac, theft, fire, or damage could take both. Apple’s iCloud services can sync and store selected data, but syncing alone is not a complete backup.

The evidence available for this guide does not establish five independently verified, currently free Mac backup apps. Rather than label paid software, trials, or unverified free tiers as free, this guide explains the dependable built-in option, the situations it covers, and what to check before choosing an additional tool.

What is the best free backup software for a Mac in 2026?

For a free, straightforward local backup, start with Time Machine. Apple describes it as the built-in backup feature of the Mac; it can automatically save files to a separate storage destination and preserve older versions for recovery. It is not an off-site backup, so it cannot by itself protect against every loss affecting both the computer and the nearby backup disk.

There is an important distinction behind the “five best” framing: a list of five products is not useful if their current free status and limitations are not established. A June 27, 2025 Macworld comparison includes Time Machine alongside products and services that may be paid or offered as trials. A July 10, 2026 technical comparison discusses several different backup approaches, but its publisher says it develops one of the products it covers. Those comparisons can help identify candidates, but they do not establish a definitive, independently verified ranking of five free Mac apps.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Best verified free local starting point: Time Machine, built into macOS.
  • For protection away from home: add a separate off-site backup approach; do not treat local Time Machine copies or syncing as equivalent protection.
  • For other apps: confirm current pricing, free-tier limits, macOS compatibility, and restore features on the product’s official documentation before relying on them.

What does Time Machine back up, and how does its history work?

Time Machine backs up files to a separate destination and maintains a history that lets you retrieve earlier versions or restore some or all files. Apple’s current guidance describes this schedule: hourly backups for the past 24 hours, daily backups for the past month, and weekly backups for previous months. When the destination fills, Time Machine removes the oldest backups to make room.

That schedule is a retention pattern, not a promise that every hourly or weekly version will remain indefinitely. How much history fits depends on the storage available and what is being backed up. Apple recommends a backup device with at least twice the storage capacity of the Mac. Treat that as Apple’s guideline; a larger destination may be useful if you need more room for files or a longer history.

Time Machine is designed for restoring files to the same Mac or to another Mac. It is useful when you have accidentally deleted or changed something, and it can also help restore files as part of a move to another computer. It is not the same as maintaining an off-site copy, and it should not be confused with a tool whose primary job is to clone a disk or provide a full disaster-recovery workflow.

How much storage should a Time Machine disk have?

Use Apple’s “at least twice the storage capacity of your Mac” guidance as the starting point when selecting a destination. The recommendation gives the backup process room for the current data set plus older versions, but it does not guarantee a fixed retention period. A Mac that changes large files frequently can consume history faster than one whose contents rarely change.

Check the usable capacity shown by macOS rather than relying only on the number printed on a drive’s packaging. Leave room for the backup history you actually want, and remember that Time Machine removes the oldest backups when the destination fills. If preserving older versions for longer is important, choosing more capacity than the minimum guideline can reduce how quickly those versions are discarded.

How do you set up a Time Machine backup?

You need a separate storage destination. Apple’s setup guidance names USB and Thunderbolt storage devices; use a destination with enough capacity for the data and history you want to retain.

  1. Connect the storage device. Attach a suitable USB or Thunderbolt device to your Mac. Keep in mind that a disk connected only occasionally cannot make backups while it is disconnected.
  2. Open Time Machine settings. In macOS, open System Settings and search for “Time Machine” if the exact location differs in your version. Open the Time Machine settings pane.
  3. Choose a backup destination. Select the connected storage device as the destination and follow the on-screen prompts to confirm it.
  4. Decide whether to encrypt the backup. Encryption is an available option. If you enable it, keep the password somewhere secure: Apple says the password is needed to restore an encrypted backup.
  5. Let the initial backup complete. The first backup establishes the copy on the destination. Leave the device connected while the backup runs, then check Time Machine’s status to confirm it is backing up.
  6. Keep the destination available for ongoing backups. Time Machine backs up automatically when the destination is available. The backup history grows and is eventually trimmed as the storage fills.

Apple recommends a device with at least twice the Mac’s capacity. That is a practical starting point, not a guarantee of a particular number of months of history: the result varies with the data being backed up and the destination’s usable space.

How do you restore files from a Time Machine backup?

Time Machine can restore selected files or a broader set of files to the same Mac or another Mac. The right scope depends on what you lost; avoid restoring more than you need when a specific earlier file or folder will do.

  1. Connect the backup destination. Attach the storage device containing the backup. If the backup is encrypted, have its password ready.
  2. Open Time Machine. Use the Time Machine controls in macOS to browse the available backup history and locate the file or folder you need.
  3. Select the version to recover. Choose the item and the point in the backup history that contains the version you want.
  4. Restore and verify. Restore the selected item, then open it from its destination to check that it is the version you intended to recover.

If you are restoring to another Mac, Apple’s guidance allows restoration to a different Mac, but the exact options presented can depend on the macOS version and the recovery situation. For an encrypted backup, the password is essential; without it, you cannot use the encrypted copy for restoration.

Is a local Time Machine disk enough protection?

No. A local backup protects against some failures of the Mac, such as losing or changing files, but it remains exposed to events that affect the Mac and the nearby disk together. Off-site protection addresses a different risk by keeping a copy somewhere separate.

Backblaze Computer Backup is one documented example of an off-site service, not one of the verified free software picks in this guide. Its operating-system support page, updated January 14, 2026, lists Mac OS versions from High Sierra through Tahoe 26 and notes native M1 support. The same page identifies exclusions for HFS+ and APFS Case-Sensitive primary drives. Check its current terms and supported configuration before choosing it; its price and retention terms are not established here.

Backblaze’s external-drive support also has conditions. Its support material requires direct connection and excludes a Time Machine backup volume, so “external drive support” should not be read as support for every external disk or every setup. Confirm the current conditions for your particular configuration before relying on that service to protect an external volume.

Cloud syncing is another distinct function. It can keep selected data synchronized or stored through a service, but a synchronized deletion or change can affect what is available across devices. Do not assume that syncing alone gives you the independent, historical backup needed to recover from every kind of loss.

How should you evaluate other Mac backup apps?

Compare backup tools by the recovery job they perform and where the backup is stored, not by a single feature score. A file-history tool, an off-site backup service, a disk-cloning utility, and software that sends backups to storage you provide can solve different problems.

Approach What it is for What to verify
Local file history Recovering selected files or earlier versions from a nearby storage destination. Whether it supports your macOS version, how it retains older versions, and how restores work.
Managed off-site backup Keeping a copy separate from the Mac and its local storage. Current price, retention, supported Mac configuration, and any restrictions on external volumes.
Disk cloning or migration Creating a broader copy or supporting a migration or recovery workflow. Whether the app’s current release supports your Mac and macOS version, and whether the workflow meets your recovery needs.
Bring-your-own-storage backup Sending backups to a storage destination you select or manage. Which destinations are supported, what setup and maintenance they require, and whether the software itself has a genuinely usable free tier.

Before installing a candidate, check its official product page for the current macOS compatibility list, whether the free version is ongoing or only a trial, restrictions on backup destinations, and what a restore requires. Also check whether “free” refers to the backup software alone or includes the storage needed to keep the backup. A free app does not make a paid cloud-storage destination free.

Look for clear restore instructions, not just a list of backup features. A tool may copy files successfully yet be unsuitable if retrieving them requires a paid upgrade, a proprietary format, or a workflow that does not run on your current Mac. Confirm whether it keeps versions, whether it can restore individual items, and whether it supports the broader migration or recovery process you actually need.

A June 27, 2025 Macworld comparison discusses ChronoSync, Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, IDrive, Get Backup Pro, MacBackup Guru, Backblaze, and Time Machine. Its descriptions include paid licenses or trials, so the appearance of a product in that comparison does not establish that it is a fully free product in 2026. A July 10, 2026 technical comparison discusses Time Machine, Arq 7, Backblaze, Carbon Copy Cloner, Duplicati, restic, and Azivault as local, managed-cloud, and bring-your-own-storage approaches. It identifies Duplicati as free in its table, but the publisher discloses that it develops one of the products covered. Confirm Duplicati’s current terms and support directly before treating it as a suitable free choice.

What common mistakes can leave a Mac backup incomplete?

  • Keeping the only backup beside the Mac: this leaves the copy vulnerable to the same physical loss. Use a separate off-site approach if you need protection from that risk.
  • Assuming sync means backup: sync and backup are different jobs. Keep a backup with history rather than relying only on synchronized copies of selected data.
  • Choosing too little storage: Apple recommends at least twice the Mac’s capacity for the Time Machine destination. The oldest history is removed as the destination fills.
  • Forgetting an encryption password: Apple says the password is needed to restore an encrypted Time Machine backup. Store it securely and make sure you can retrieve it when needed.
  • Assuming every external disk is supported by a cloud service: external-drive rules can depend on how the disk is connected and whether it contains a Time Machine backup volume. Check the service’s current conditions.
  • Calling a trial a free product: some comparisons include paid products and trials. Verify whether a free tier continues after a trial and what it allows you to back up and restore.
  • Never testing a restore: a backup that has never been opened is an assumption, not a demonstrated recovery plan. Restore a nonessential file periodically and verify that it opens.
  • Leaving the destination unavailable: Time Machine cannot write a scheduled copy while its destination is disconnected. Establish a routine that reconnects the disk often enough for the history you need.
  • Confusing a clone with version history: a broad copy or migration utility may not provide the same historical file versions as Time Machine. Match the product to the recovery event you expect.

Which backup setup should you choose?

For most people who want a free local backup, use Time Machine with a separate storage destination. If you also need protection from a loss that could affect the Mac and its nearby disk, add an off-site backup and confirm that it supports your Mac, macOS version, and any external volumes you want included.

A sensible two-part setup is therefore a Time Machine destination for convenient local history plus a separate off-site copy for events such as theft, fire, or damage at the computer’s location. Keep the roles distinct: Time Machine supplies the built-in local history, while the off-site service supplies geographic separation. Neither role should be inferred from a product’s marketing label alone.

If you are comparing other utilities, choose based on the recovery job you need—file history, off-site storage, disk cloning, or a broader recovery workflow—and verify the current free-tier terms before depending on one. The available comparisons do not justify naming five definitive free winners for 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I tell whether a backup is actually usable?

Periodically restore a nonessential file to a different location and open it. This practical check can reveal a destination, password, or restore-workflow problem before you need an important file.

Should I keep my backup drive connected all the time?

A connected destination is available for automatic backups, while a disconnected drive cannot receive them. Choose a routine that gives the Mac regular access to the destination, and keep any off-site copy separate from the computer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a free backup app also make cloud storage free?

Not necessarily. The software license and the storage destination are separate costs; check whether a tool includes storage or expects you to supply and pay for it.

Is iCloud a replacement for Time Machine?

No. iCloud can sync and store selected data, but syncing alone does not provide the independent, historical copy that a backup is intended to provide.

What size drive does Apple recommend for Time Machine?

Apple recommends a storage device with at least twice the storage capacity of the Mac. That is guidance rather than a guarantee of a particular retention period.

Can Time Machine restore to another Mac?

Yes. Apple’s guidance supports restoring some or all files to the same Mac or to another Mac, although the exact options depend on the macOS version and recovery situation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when a Time Machine disk becomes full?

Time Machine removes the oldest backups to make room for newer ones. A larger destination can provide more room for the history you want to keep.

Is Backblaze a free Mac backup app?

It is documented here as a possible off-site complement, not as a verified free pick. Check its current price, retention, compatibility, and external-drive conditions before subscribing.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Time Machine is the dependable free starting point for local Mac backup in 2026. Use a separate destination, follow Apple’s capacity guidance, protect the encryption password, and test a restore. For theft, fire, or other events that can affect both the Mac and its nearby disk, add a separately verified off-site backup rather than relying on sync alone.
