Short answer: Google Play Protect is the free security baseline on every Android phone with Google Play, and it may be all many people need. It checks apps before download, scans periodically, and can warn about, disable, or remove harmful apps. If you want a separate scanner, six products—Avast Antivirus & Security, AVG Antivirus Free, Avira Antivirus Security, Bitdefender Mobile Security, Google Play Protect, and Sophos Intercept X for Mobile—received perfect 6/6/6 scores in AV-TEST’s July 2026 Android round. That result measures protection, performance, and usability; it does not prove that every feature in every app is free.
This guide separates the laboratory evidence from volatile app-store details. It shows what the six results mean, how to check your phone safely, how to verify a genuinely free tier before installing, and why the “tested by Hazel Shaw” wording should not be treated as a personal hands-on claim without the publisher’s device and method records.

Start with Google Play Protect before installing anything else. Google says it is enabled by default, checks apps before you download them from Google Play, examines apps from other sources, and periodically scans the device. It can warn you about a potentially harmful app, disable it, or remove it. Google’s own description is direct: “Google Play Protect checks your apps and devices for harmful behavior.” Google Play Help
That makes Play Protect a useful baseline rather than an automatic recommendation for a second app. A separate security app may add a different interface, manual checks, web or scam protections, or account features, but those extras vary by product, country, app version, and whether you pay. The July 2026 laboratory results below cannot answer those free-tier questions by themselves.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
When a second scanner can make sense
- You install applications outside Google Play and want an additional on-demand check.
- You need a particular web, scam, privacy, or account-protection feature that Play Protect does not present as a separate control.
- You are troubleshooting a suspicious phone and want an independent scan. Run one reputable scanner at a time so overlapping background services do not create confusing alerts or battery use.
Do not treat an antivirus label as permission to ignore Android updates, app updates, screen locks, or cautious download decisions. A scanner is one layer of a security routine, not a substitute for those controls.
What did the July 2026 Android antivirus test actually find?
AV-TEST evaluated 12 Android security products in July 2026 using current versions and default settings. Each product could earn up to 6 points in protection, 6 in performance, and 6 in usability, for a maximum of 18. Six products received the full 6/6/6: Avast Antivirus & Security, AVG Antivirus Free, Avira Antivirus Security, Bitdefender Mobile Security, Google Play Protect, and Sophos Intercept X for Mobile. See the AV-TEST Android results for the dated table and version strings.

A perfect score is a snapshot of a specific build under the lab’s test conditions. It is not a permanent ranking, a guarantee against every future threat, or proof that the free edition of an app contains all the capabilities of the tested product. The table establishes strong results for that round; it does not establish a six-way winner.
Which of the six options are really free?
The evidence supports one unqualified answer: Play Protect is included with Google Play and does not require you to buy a separate app. For the five third-party products, the July AV-TEST page identifies the products and versions but does not map each feature to a free tier. A store listing may show a free download while placing real-time monitoring, web protection, unlimited scans, or ad removal behind a subscription.
Check these items on the app’s current Google Play page and in its first-run screens before accepting a trial:
- What remains after a trial: Look for wording such as “free forever,” “basic protection,” or a date when billing starts. A seven-day or 30-day trial is not the same as a free plan.
- Scan scope: Confirm whether manual app scans, scheduled scans, and any real-time monitoring are included without payment.
- Extra protections: Identify whether web, phishing, scam-call, privacy, or lost-device tools are free, limited, or paid.
- Billing terms: Read the renewal price, cancellation path, and whether removing the app cancels a subscription. Do not assume it does.
- Permissions: Compare requested access with the feature you intend to use. A lab score does not tell you whether a permission request is appropriate for your situation.
- Country availability: App names, features, and subscription screens can differ by region. A description seen in one country may not match your listing.
Techlicious’ June 2026 comparison offers reader-facing context—Play Protect as a baseline, Bitdefender discussed as a paid option, and Avira discussed as a free option—but app-store terms change. Use its Android antivirus comparison as context, then confirm the live listing and checkout screen before deciding.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
What does each lab-tested option bring to the decision?
The products below are profiles of the six entries that achieved 6/6/6 in the dated round, not claims that every one is a permanently free alternative.
Google Play Protect: the no-install baseline
Play Protect is already part of Google Play on supported Android devices. It checks an app before download, considers apps obtained elsewhere, and runs periodic device checks. This is the simplest choice when you want protection without another vendor account, another background service, or a second app to maintain.
To confirm it is active, open Google Play Store → profile icon → Play Protect → Settings. Google recommends leaving scanning on. If you sideload apps, the checks for apps from outside Google Play make this setting especially important.
Avast Antivirus & Security
AV-TEST listed version 26.11 and awarded 6/6/6. The result tells you that this build met the lab’s protection, performance, and usability criteria in July 2026. It does not tell you which functions appear without payment, how many advertisements you will see, or whether a particular feature is offered in your country.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
AVG Antivirus Free
Version 26.6 also scored 6/6/6. Despite “Free” in the product name, verify what the current app treats as free rather than assuming every visible tool is included. Pay attention to the first-run offer and to whether a scan or protection switch opens a subscription page.
Avira Antivirus Security
AV-TEST recorded version 7.32 with 18/18 overall. The lab result is useful evidence of that release’s tested behavior, but it is not a feature list. Check whether the functions you care about—such as any web or privacy controls—are available on your account without a recurring charge.

- Black PopSockets: Simple, refined, and endlessly versatile. A timeless essential for any phone.
- Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.
Bitdefender Mobile Security
Version 3.3 achieved 6/6/6. The result should not be read as proof of a continuing free edition: the app may present a trial or a paid plan, and those terms can vary by region. If you install it for evaluation, record the trial end date and cancellation route before starting.
Sophos Intercept X for Mobile
Version 9.8 received full marks in all three AV-TEST categories. As with the other third-party entries, the score does not establish current availability, advertising, permissions, or which protections remain free. Use the live store description and in-app settings to make that determination.
How do I check an Android phone for malware?
Use Play Protect first, then add a second scanner only if you have a clear reason. The following process avoids confusing a subscription prompt with a completed scan.
- Open the Play Store. Tap your profile icon, choose Play Protect, and review the last scan result.
- Open Play Protect settings. Keep app scanning enabled. If you install apps from outside Google Play, leave the option that checks those apps enabled as well.
- Run the available check. Let it finish on a stable connection and note the app name, warning, and action offered. Do not immediately dismiss a warning just because the app is familiar.
- Investigate the flagged app. If Play Protect offers to disable or remove a potentially harmful app, read the prompt and back up irreplaceable data before making changes. For a work-managed phone, contact the administrator first.
- If you choose a second product, install only from its official Google Play listing. Check the developer name, version, permissions, trial language, and country availability before tapping Install.
- Run one manual scan and record the result. A clean result means that scan found nothing it classified as harmful; it is not proof that every account, message, or future download is safe.
- Remove the extra app if it adds no value. Keep Play Protect enabled. If you started a trial, cancel it through the subscription controls before the renewal date; uninstalling alone may not end billing.
How should I compare free Android antivirus apps?
Use a checklist that separates measurable evidence from convenience and cost. AV-TEST supplies the first three columns; you must verify the rest in your own region.
| Question | Why it matters | How to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Did the product score well in a recent independent round? | It provides a dated, controlled reference point. | Check the AV-TEST product row, test date, version, and category scores. |
| Is scanning automatic, manual, or both? | Automatic checks reduce the chance that you forget a scan; manual checks may be enough for occasional verification. | Read the current app settings and help text. Do not infer this from a 6/6/6 score. |
| What is free after any trial? | A free download can become a paid subscription or leave only a limited scanner. | Read the pricing screen and renewal terms before accepting. |
| What permissions and background activity are requested? | They affect privacy, battery, and your comfort with the app. | Review the Play Store data-safety section and Android permission dialog, then compare them with the feature you need. |
| Is it available where you live? | Listings and capabilities can differ by country. | Check your own Play Store account, not a screenshot or an older review. |
| Does it duplicate Play Protect? | Two overlapping tools can add prompts without adding a useful capability. | Write down the specific problem the second app solves before installing it. |
What are the main pitfalls when installing a “free” antivirus?
A free download is mistaken for a free service
Stores commonly let you install an app at no charge even when advanced scanning or ongoing monitoring is subscription-only. Treat the app’s checkout screen as the authoritative statement for your country and date.
A trial is started accidentally
Read every confirmation button. If a trial requires a payment method, note the renewal date immediately and verify the subscription in Google Play’s account controls.

Permissions are accepted without a purpose
Grant only access that matches a feature you intend to use. If a permission request is unclear, pause and consult the app’s help page or decline it; a perfect laboratory score does not explain why your phone is requesting a particular access.
A single clean scan is treated as a guarantee
Detection changes as apps and threats change. A scan reports the state and definitions available at that moment, while Play Protect’s periodic checks continue in the background when enabled.
A small demonstration is mistaken for a malware test
One published EICAR demonstration used a Samsung Galaxy A31 running Android 12 in Indonesia. EICAR is a harmless test file, and that one-device exercise does not establish detection against real malware or across Android models. The account is documented by DailytechHub; it should not be presented as a substitute for AV-TEST’s independent multi-product round.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does “tested by Hazel Shaw” mean here?
The available evidence supports a July 2026 AV-TEST laboratory evaluation and a separate one-phone EICAR demonstration. It does not establish Hazel Shaw’s device, Android version, region, app builds, dates, settings, or personal test records. Therefore, the title’s “tested” wording should not be read as a verified hands-on test by that named author unless the publisher supplies those records.
For a reproducible personal comparison, publish the exact phone model, Android release, country, app version, installation source, settings, scan time, network conditions, trial status, and steps used. Without those details, readers can compare the lab’s dated scores, but they cannot reproduce a claimed six-app hands-on result.
Which choice is sensible for different Android users?
You want the simplest no-cost setup
Leave Play Protect enabled and keep Android and your apps updated. This gives you Google’s built-in pre-download checks, periodic scans, and responses to potentially harmful apps without adding another subscription decision.

You install apps from outside Google Play
Keep Play Protect’s checks for apps from other sources enabled. If you add a third-party scanner, choose it only after confirming the free functions, permissions, and trial terms in your own store listing.
You need a particular extra feature
Define the feature first—such as a web warning or a manual second opinion—then compare only apps that state that feature is included at no charge. Do not select on the AV-TEST score alone because all six named products reached the same maximum result in this round.
You are evaluating a paid trial
Capture the price, renewal date, cancellation path, and included protections before accepting. A product can be excellent in a lab and still be the wrong fit if the capability you need disappears when the trial ends.
What is the final recommendation?
For most Android owners, Play Protect is the rational starting point: it is built in, enabled by default, and earned 6/6/6 in AV-TEST’s July 2026 round. The five third-party products listed here also earned perfect scores, so the deciding factors are the free tier actually offered in your country, the permissions and background behavior you accept, and the protection you specifically need—not a tie-breaking laboratory number.
Use the dated AV-TEST results as evidence of tested quality, verify every current store and subscription detail yourself, and treat any personal-testing claim as unverified until the device and methodology are published.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Google Play Protect check apps that did not come from Google Play?
Yes. Google says Play Protect checks potentially harmful apps from other sources as well as apps downloaded through Google Play. Leave the relevant scanning setting enabled under Play Store → profile icon → Play Protect → Settings.
Does an 18/18 AV-TEST result mean an app is free?
No. The 18-point total combines protection, performance, and usability, with six points available in each category. AV-TEST’s result table does not specify which capabilities a vendor places in a free tier, trial, or subscription.
Is the EICAR file safe to use as my only antivirus test?
No. EICAR is intentionally harmless, and the cited demonstration used one Samsung Galaxy A31 on Android 12 in Indonesia. It can show that a product reacts to a test file, but it cannot measure real-malware detection or represent every Android device.
What should I record if I publish my own Android antivirus comparison?
Record the phone model, Android version, country, app version, installation source, settings, scan date, network conditions, and whether a trial was active. Those details let readers distinguish a reproducible test from an unsupported personal-testing claim.
