For most beginners, the best starting point is Gemini Notebook when you need answers tied to your own notes, Microsoft Study and Learn when your school already provides Microsoft 365 Education, ChatGPT or Gemini for flexible explanations and drafting, and Canva for visual assignments. The right choice depends less on which chatbot sounds smartest than on four practical questions: does it work from your sources, can you access it with your account, what happens to your data, and what does “free” actually include?
Free access can mean a permanent limited tier, a school license, or a time-limited promotion that later renews at a paid price. The guide below separates those cases and gives a safe workflow for using AI without handing over restricted coursework or submitting generated work as your own.

Quick comparison: which free AI tool fits your situation?
| Tool | Best fit | How it helps you study | Who can use the strongest free access | Important limits or renewal terms | Privacy notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini Notebook | Notes, readings, PDFs and source-based revision | Answers from uploaded sources, inline citations, study guides, quizzes, flashcards and guided learning | Qualifying institutions and standalone users; education availability varies | Education offering lists up to 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook and 50 chat queries per day | Google says qualifying Workspace for Education data is not human reviewed or used to train AI models |
| Microsoft Study and Learn Agent | Coached practice and step-by-step mastery | Scaffolded conversations, flashcards, quizzes, matching and fill-in-the-blank activities from documents, slides or PDFs | Microsoft 365 Education A1, A3 or A5 users when Copilot Chat is enabled; age controls can apply | No additional charge with those education licenses; access depends on administrator settings | Microsoft describes enterprise data protection for qualifying education access |
| ChatGPT | Brainstorming, explanations, outlines and first drafts | General conversation that can rephrase concepts, generate examples and help plan study | Anyone with an account for the ordinary service; a separate 2026 U.S. student promotion has stricter eligibility | Eligible U.S. college and graduate students can claim four free monthly billing periods; then $20 per month unless cancelled | Do not assume a promotion or ordinary account is approved for confidential school data; follow your institution’s policy |
| Google Gemini | General explanations and flexible idea generation | Conversational help, examples, planning and drafting; use Notebook when answers must be source-grounded | Google’s 2026 student offer is market- and enrollment-dependent | Eligible U.S. college students can receive one year of Google AI Pro; eligible students outside the U.S. can receive Google AI Plus in more than 140 markets, with exclusions | Protection depends on whether you are in qualifying Workspace for Education access or a consumer account |
| Canva | Presentations, posters, infographics and visual communication | Design templates and limited AI writing/design assistance | Canva Education is free for eligible K–12 teachers and students; university Pro access requires Canva for Campus | Canva Free and Education have limited monthly access to some AI features; several AI 2.0 features require a paid plan | Keep student records and identifying information out of designs unless your school permits the upload |
No independent cross-tool accuracy benchmark is established for these offerings. Treat every generated explanation, quotation, calculation, citation and date as a draft to verify against your course materials or library sources.
What “free” means before you create an account
Permanent limited access
A free consumer account usually remains available but can impose message, file, feature or speed limits that change over time. It is useful for trying a workflow, but it is not the same as unlimited access or a school’s managed license.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
School-provided access
A school license can unlock different features, stronger administrative controls and education-specific data terms. Your administrator may need to enable the service, and age restrictions can block an otherwise eligible student. Sign in with your school identity first; creating a personal account may put you in a different product and privacy regime.
Time-limited student promotions
Promotions require eligibility checks, a payment method and cancellation before renewal if you do not want to pay. Record the activation date and renewal price in your calendar. A promotional period ending is not evidence that the underlying tool has become permanently free.
Gemini Notebook: the strongest choice for source-grounded studying
Why beginners choose it
Gemini Notebook is designed to answer from materials you provide rather than treating the entire web or a general model memory as the assignment’s authority. Google describes it as an AI research and thinking partner “grounded only in your sources.” That makes it a better fit than a general chatbot when you are revising lecture notes, a reading packet, lab instructions or a set of PDFs and need to see where an answer came from.
It can generate study guides, quizzes and flashcards, support guided learning, and show inline citations. Citations do not make an answer automatically correct: check that the cited passage really supports the claim and that you have uploaded the complete, current version of the source.
Access and stated education limits
Google says Gemini Notebook is free for qualifying institutions and also available as a standalone app. The education offering described by Google lists up to 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook and 50 chat queries per day. Those figures are limits for the described offering, not a promise that every consumer account has the same allowance.

How to use it for a chapter or lecture
- Create one notebook per coherent unit. Use a course module, exam block or research question rather than mixing unrelated subjects.
- Add the authoritative sources. Upload your lecture notes, assigned reading, rubric and permitted reference documents. Do not add a classmate’s private submission or a document your school prohibits from being uploaded.
- Ask for a map before details. Request a short outline of the sources and ask the tool to identify definitions, dates, formulas and unresolved points.
- Generate retrieval practice. Ask for questions first, hide the answers, and attempt them before requesting feedback. Specify the number, difficulty and whether you want short-answer, multiple-choice or flashcards.
- Audit every citation. Open the cited source passage, mark anything unsupported, and correct your notes rather than copying an uncited sentence.
Privacy qualification
Google states that Gemini Notebook is a Core Service under Workspace for Education terms and that data in that qualifying context is not human reviewed or used to train AI models. A standalone consumer account may be governed by different terms, so confirm which account you are using before uploading identifiable student information. Your institution’s policy remains the controlling rule.

What makes it different
Study and Learn is built around practice rather than a one-shot answer. Microsoft describes an agent that supports understanding, practice and mastery with scaffolded conversations, flashcards, quizzes, matching and fill-in-the-blank activities. Its stated teaching principle is: “The learner does the thinking, and the agent coaches them through the process.”
Eligibility and administrator requirements
The agent is pre-installed at no additional cost for users with Microsoft 365 Education A1, A3 or A5, but Copilot Chat must be enabled by the institution. Age-gating controls can apply to learners aged 13–17. Microsoft separately describes Copilot Chat with enterprise data protection as available at no additional cost for qualifying educators, staff and students aged 13 or older.
If you cannot see the agent, the likely causes are an account without an eligible license, Copilot Chat being disabled, an age restriction or a policy that limits uploaded files. Ask your school’s IT administrator which condition applies instead of creating a second personal account and assuming it will have the same protections.
A practical coached-study sequence
- Open the agent with your school account. Confirm that the account shown is your education identity and that Copilot Chat is available.
- Provide a permitted document. Upload the relevant slide deck, PDF or notes. Remove names, student IDs and unrelated private comments first.
- Request a diagnostic. Ask for five questions that test prerequisite knowledge, one at a time, with hints only after you attempt an answer.
- Use the practice modes. Move from explanation to flashcards, matching or fill-in-the-blank activities. Tell it to explain why an answer is wrong rather than simply revealing the answer.
- Finish with transfer. Ask for a new problem that uses the same concept in an unfamiliar context, then solve it without assistance.
Privacy and academic-integrity boundaries
Enterprise data protection is a useful safeguard, not permission to ignore school rules. Your institution decides what may be uploaded, retained or shared. Never paste an exam, a protected accommodation record or another student’s work unless your school explicitly allows that use.

ChatGPT: approachable general help, with a time-limited U.S. student offer
Best uses for a first-time user
ChatGPT is a broad assistant rather than a source-only notebook. It is useful for turning a confusing concept into a plain-language explanation, producing analogies, brainstorming project angles, building an outline, role-playing an oral exam or revising a draft you wrote. For factual coursework, give it the relevant source and ask it to distinguish quotations from its own explanation.
2026 back-to-school promotion
OpenAI’s 2026 offer is for eligible full-time and part-time college and graduate students at eligible U.S. degree-granting institutions. SheerID verifies enrollment, a valid payment method is required, and the claim deadline is October 31, 2026. The promotion supplies four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus; after that, the subscription renews at $20 per month unless you cancel. OpenAI’s help wording is explicit: “A valid payment method is required to activate the offer.”
This is not a universal free plan. Students outside the eligible U.S. institutions, students who miss the deadline and people who do not pass verification should not assume they receive the same promotion. Before activating, read the checkout screen for the renewal date and set a cancellation reminder.
A beginner prompt pattern
Use a four-part request: role (what kind of tutor), source (what it may rely on), task (what you need) and check (how it should show uncertainty). For example: “Act as a statistics tutor. Use only the definitions in the text I pasted. Explain sampling bias in 150 words, give one original example, and label any point not supported by the text.”
Google Gemini: flexible general chat plus a separate student offer
When general Gemini is useful
Use Gemini for the same broad tasks as other general assistants: generating examples, planning a presentation, simplifying terminology, comparing interpretations and creating a first-pass outline. If your question must be answered from a closed set of readings, move the work into Gemini Notebook instead of relying on a general chat response.

Eligibility and renewal terms
Google announced on August 19, 2026 that eligible U.S. college students can receive one year of Google AI Pro free. Eligible students outside the U.S. can receive Google AI Plus in more than 140 markets, with stated exclusions. Eligibility depends on market and enrollment, and Google requires a valid payment method for the offer. The plan renews at the listed price after the trial unless cancelled; the U.S. plan is described as valued at $19.99 per month.
Because market rules, redemption windows and exclusions differ, read the offer’s eligibility screen in your country before entering payment details. Do not describe the one-year offer as a permanent student plan.
Canva: the free option for visual assignments
Who receives Canva Education
Canva Education is free for eligible K–12 teachers and students, generally through teacher invitation or school eligibility. University students receive Pro features only when their institution provides Canva for Campus; otherwise they use Canva Free or a paid plan. A university email address alone does not establish Campus access.

Canva says its Free and Education plans include limited monthly access to features such as Magic Write. Canva AI 2.0 features including Memory Library and Connectors are available on paid plans. Monthly limits can make a feature appear to stop working even though your account is still active; check the feature’s allowance before planning a deadline-night workflow.
Safe workflow for a presentation or poster
- Start with your own outline. Decide the thesis, audience and required evidence before opening a template.
- Use AI for structure and wording. Ask for three slide-title options or a shorter caption, then edit for accuracy and your own voice.
- Verify every visual claim. Check numbers, labels, map boundaries and image context against the assignment sources.
- Keep personal data out. Do not place student names, grades, health information or unpublished research in an AI feature unless the school has approved it.
- Export and inspect. Review accessibility, legibility, citations and speaker notes in the final file rather than trusting the generated layout.
How to choose in under a minute
| If your first need is… | Start with… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Answers tied to lecture notes or assigned readings | Gemini Notebook | It is designed for source-grounded questions and inline citations. |
| Practice that makes you attempt answers before revealing them | Study and Learn Agent | Its stated design is scaffolded coaching, with quizzes and flashcards. |
| A plain-language explanation or brainstorming partner | ChatGPT or Gemini | Both are broad assistants suited to flexible conversation; verify the result. |
| A presentation, infographic or poster | Canva | Its education and free offerings focus on visual communication, subject to eligibility and feature limits. |
| Confidential coursework or identifiable student records | Use only a school-approved, managed service | Consumer availability does not establish permission to upload restricted data. |
A safe AI study workflow that works with any tool
- Read the assignment rules first. Some instructors permit brainstorming but prohibit generated prose, while others require disclosure. Record the rule before using a tool.
- Minimize the data. Paste only the excerpt needed for the question. Remove names, student numbers, comments and unrelated pages.
- Ask for process, not a submission. Request hints, a worked example with different numbers, a quiz or feedback on your draft. Avoid “write my final essay” prompts.
- Keep an evidence trail. Save the original source, your prompt, the response and the changes you made. This helps you explain your work if a teacher asks.
- Verify independently. Check quotations word for word, recompute calculations, open cited pages and confirm dates and definitions in primary course or library sources.
- Write the final answer yourself. Use the tool’s output as tutoring or a draft aid, not as anonymous authorship.
Prompts that encourage learning instead of copying
For difficult concepts
“Explain this concept at two levels: first for a new student, then using the terminology from my course. Give one analogy and one limitation. Ask me a question before you continue.”
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
For active recall
“Create ten questions from the uploaded notes. Show one at a time, wait for my answer, then identify the exact sentence or page that supports the feedback. Do not reveal the answer in the question.”
For checking a draft
“Mark claims that need a citation, unclear definitions and logical gaps. Do not rewrite the paragraph. After the table of issues, ask me which revision I want to make.”
For mathematics or coding
“Give a hint for the next step only. Use a different example after I solve this one, and show the full calculation only if I request it.”
Privacy and academic-integrity checklist
- Use your school-managed account when your institution provides one, and confirm which service is covered by its education terms.
- Read the school’s AI policy for permitted tools, disclosure requirements, retention and prohibited data.
- Do not upload exams, answer keys, protected student records, unpublished research or another person’s work without explicit permission.
- Remember that a citation generated by an AI tool is a lead to verify, not proof that the cited source exists or says what the answer claims.
- Disclose AI assistance when your instructor or institution requires it, and preserve your own notes and drafts.
Troubleshooting common access and limit problems
The feature is missing
Check whether you are signed into the correct school account, whether your license is eligible and whether an administrator must enable Copilot Chat or a similar service. For Canva, verify K–12 eligibility or a Campus arrangement; university enrollment alone is not enough.
The tool stopped responding or says you reached a limit
Notebook’s education description lists 50 chat queries per day and 50 sources per notebook. Canva’s AI features can have monthly allowances. Split a large project into focused notebooks or sessions, remove duplicate sources and reserve limited generations for the steps that genuinely need them. Do not create multiple accounts to evade a school policy or promotion rule.
The answer sounds confident but is wrong
Ask the tool to quote the supporting passage, then compare it with the original. If no passage supports the claim, label it uncertain and replace it with a verified explanation. Source-grounding reduces unsupported answers but does not eliminate misreading, omission or arithmetic mistakes.

| Microsoft 365 Education access | Users with A1, A3 or A5 when Copilot Chat is enabled; age controls may apply | Study and Learn at no additional charge under the eligible education license | Access follows the school license and administrator policy |
| Canva Education | Eligible K–12 teachers and students, generally through school eligibility or teacher invitation | Free education account; some AI features have monthly limits | University Pro access requires Canva for Campus; otherwise Canva Free or a paid plan applies |
Bottom line for a first-time student
Start with the tool that matches the evidence you must use. Put notes and readings into Gemini Notebook when traceable answers matter; choose Study and Learn if your school supplies Microsoft 365 Education and you want coached practice; use ChatGPT or general Gemini for explanations and planning; and choose Canva for visual work when your education eligibility is confirmed. Before uploading anything, check the school policy, remove unnecessary personal data, and verify every important output yourself. Treat every promotion as temporary until you have recorded its renewal terms.
