Duck.ai is a privacy-oriented hosted alternative to investigate first: DuckDuckGo says it removes personal metadata before sending requests to model providers and has agreements limiting their retention and use for training. That is a description of its own safeguards, not an independent audit or a promise of absolute privacy. Claude offers another general-purpose option, but its consumer controls have important retention and safety-review exceptions. If you prefer Google’s Gemini or ChatGPT, both provide controls that can reduce training use, but those controls do not mean chats are never retained or reviewed. The practical choice depends on what you plan to share, who may process it, and how long it may remain available.
What should you look for in a private AI alternative?
“Private” can mean several different things. A service might avoid using prompts to train models while still retaining them for safety, processing them through another provider, or allowing human review. To compare options usefully, ask what information leaves your device, whether identifiers are removed, what happens to prompts after a response, whether people may review them, and which settings or integrations change the defaults.

- Transmission: Does the service send your prompt to another model provider? Does it remove identifying metadata first?
- Training: Are conversations used to improve models by default, only after opt-in, or under other conditions?
- Retention and deletion: How long can chats remain in history or backend systems, and what exceptions apply?
- Human review: Can employees or service providers review chats, including for safety or quality purposes?
- Account and integrations: Are chats tied to your account, personalization, connected apps, or other services?
A useful distinction is that “not used for training” does not mean “not stored,” “not reviewed,” or “not processed by another company.” Read each control as answering one specific question, not as a blanket guarantee.

Which hosted alternatives are worth considering?
Duck.ai is the clearest privacy-oriented hosted candidate in this comparison. Claude is a mainstream alternative with user controls, while Gemini and ChatGPT remain options if their settings and retention rules fit your needs. None should be treated as a place for confidential material simply because a setting is called private, temporary, or off.

It also compares privacy practices rather than answer quality or convenience, neither of which was established in the cited materials. Duck.ai’s available provider and model list can change; check its current list before relying on a particular model or feature.

DuckDuckGo says Duck.ai does not record or store chats by default. It says it strips personal metadata such as IP addresses before forwarding prompts to underlying model providers, and that those providers agree not to train on the conversations or retain prompts and responses beyond generation.
Those commitments make Duck.ai a candidate for people who want a hosted assistant with an intermediary between them and model providers. They do not remove every processing step or exception. DuckDuckGo describes short-term prompt caching for some providers, and exceptions for legal demands and suspected malicious use. If you upload certain images or files, moderation providers may scan them; material flagged as child sexual abuse material may be retained.
DuckDuckGo also describes a “zero provider visibility” category for models hosted in a Trusted Execution Environment. Treat this as DuckDuckGo’s stated feature rather than an independently verified guarantee. Before choosing a model, review the current provider list and the service’s explanation of its safeguards; the list is subject to change.

DuckDuckGo’s help page states: “By default, Duck.ai does not record or store any of your chats, and your conversations are not used to train chat models by DuckDuckGo or the underlying model providers (for example, Open AI and Anthropic).” The statement describes the default and the company’s position; it should not be expanded into a claim that no third party can ever process a request.

What should Claude users know about deletion and training?
Anthropic’s consumer policy separates ordinary conversation deletion from model-improvement and safety handling. When a user deletes a conversation, Anthropic says it disappears from chat history immediately and is deleted from backend systems within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions.
If you allow model improvement, qualifying data may be retained in de-identified form in training pipelines for up to five years. Anthropic also says chats can be used for improvement if flagged for safety review or through another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even when the model-improvement setting is enabled.
Safety flags have distinct periods: Anthropic describes retaining inputs and outputs associated with flagged policy violations for up to two years, and trust-and-safety classification scores for up to seven years. These periods are Anthropic’s published policy, not an independent assessment. Deleting a conversation should therefore not be read as overriding every safety, legal, or training-related exception.
Scope matters. The cited terms concern Claude Free, Pro, Max, and Claude Code under those accounts. They are not a basis for assuming identical terms for Claude for Work or API customers.

How do Gemini’s activity settings change what happens to chats?
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, updated October 23, 2026, and privacy notice, updated October 13, 2026, describe different handling depending on Keep Activity. These details apply to signed-in Gemini Apps; Google says signed-out use is covered by its general Privacy Policy.
When Keep Activity is on
Chats and shared content are saved in activity and may be used to provide, develop, and improve Google services, including training generative AI. The default auto-delete period is 18 months. Google also offers 3 months, 36 months, or no auto-delete. A subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers; Google says reviewed chats are disconnected from accounts before being sent to service providers and may be retained for up to three years.
When Keep Activity is off
Google says future chats are not used to train its AI unless you submit feedback. They are nevertheless retained for 72 hours for response, feedback processing, and safety purposes. This is a shorter, specific retention period—not an assertion that the chats are immediately erased or never processed.
What about temporary chats and connected services?
Google says temporary chats are not used to improve Google AI with human reviewers, but may still be used to respond and protect users and the public. Connected apps and other Google services can have separate data practices, so a setting for Gemini activity does not necessarily determine what happens to information handled through an integration.
Google’s Privacy Hub cautions: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.” That is a useful standard for deciding what not to submit, even when you have adjusted activity settings.

How can you reduce ChatGPT data use?
OpenAI documents two relevant controls: opting out of model improvement and using Temporary Chat. The first addresses training use; the second keeps a chat out of history and out of model training. Neither should be treated as a guarantee that no data is retained for any purpose.

How should you choose based on the information you plan to share?
Start with the harm that could follow from exposure, not with the service’s “privacy” label. If a prompt contains client records, credentials, health details, legal strategy, unreleased business information, or another person’s personal data, the safest choice is usually not to send it to a hosted chatbot unless you have verified that the service and your organization’s rules permit it.

Any of these services may be workable if you understand the account and activity settings. Duck.ai is worth considering if you value metadata stripping and the stated provider commitments. Claude, Gemini, and ChatGPT provide different account controls, but their retention and review rules are not interchangeable.
For work or regulated information
Do not infer workplace or API protections from a consumer policy. Confirm which product and account type you have, whether your organization has approved it, and what contractual terms govern prompts, outputs, retention, and review. Anthropic and OpenAI explicitly distinguish some consumer terms from their work or API arrangements; Google also notes that connected services can have separate practices.
For highly confidential material
Do not submit it until you have a clear, current answer about data processing, access, retention, deletion, and any relevant organizational or legal requirements. A hosted assistant necessarily processes the prompt to produce an answer, and policy controls do not establish that all copies or processing cease instantly. Local inference could change which service receives a prompt, but the cited information does not establish a particular local setup, device, or tool as a recommended solution.
What should you check before starting a chat?
Settings and terms can change, and a label can hide meaningful qualifications. Use this short pre-chat check for the account and service you actually plan to use:
- Identify the product and account type. Confirm whether you are using a consumer account, a work plan, an API, signed-in Gemini, or signed-out access.
- Find the model-improvement control. Check whether training use is on, off, or conditional on feedback or safety review.
- Check history and deletion separately. A chat disappearing from your visible history may not mean backend copies have already been erased.
- Look for human review and safety exceptions. Review whether selected chats or flagged content can be retained longer.
- Review integrations and uploads. Connected apps, files, images, and moderation can introduce additional processing beyond ordinary text prompts.
- Minimize what you send. Remove names, account numbers, credentials, and details that are not necessary to answer the question. When possible, use a fictional or generalized example.

Can I use a private AI chatbot without creating an account?
Whether an account is required depends on the service and access route, and the policy information summarized here does not establish a universal account-free option. In particular, Google says signed-out Gemini use falls under its general Privacy Policy rather than the signed-in Gemini Apps terms, so do not assume the same controls apply.
Does turning off AI training stop a company from seeing my prompt?
No. Training is only one use of data; a service may still process or retain prompts to produce a response, protect users, or handle safety and legal issues. Check the separate rules for access, review, and retention.
Are private AI chats encrypted end to end?
The policy descriptions here do not establish end-to-end encryption for these services. Look for explicit technical details in the service’s current security documentation rather than inferring encryption from a no-training or deletion setting.
Should I paste passwords or API keys into an AI assistant?
No. Treat credentials as secrets and keep them out of prompts, even when a chat is temporary or training is disabled. If a credential has already been shared, revoke or rotate it through the system that issued it.
