If what you miss about Baldur’s Gate 3 is not simply turn-based combat but companions who argue, leave, forgive, desire and change the ending around you, start with Dragon Age: Inquisition or Dragon Age: Origins. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is the best long-burn alternative, while Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader offer the deepest systems-heavy romances. Choose Cyberpunk 2077 if cinematic intimacy matters more than party combat.

What makes a romance “deep” like Baldur’s Gate 3?

That is why a game with more marriage candidates is not automatically a better match. The useful tests are reactivity, writing, consequence, inclusivity and how naturally romance fits the combat and quest structure.
Which games are the closest overall matches?
1. Dragon Age: Inquisition — the best all-round fantasy substitute
Inquisition is the strongest starting point for players who want BG3’s party banter, political stakes and mature fantasy romances. BioWare uses approval, personal quests and branching dialogue to make companions feel like allies with agendas rather than recruitable bonuses.
Romance interests include Sera, Josephine, Cassandra, Cullen, Blackwall, Dorian, Iron Bull and Solas. 6. Cyberpunk 2077 — the best cinematic intimacy outside a party RPG
Cyberpunk 2077 is not an isometric party CRPG, but it matches BG3’s investment in personal quests and emotional stakes. Judy, Panam, River and Kerry have quest chains about grief, exploitation and survival. Standing by a character through those crises determines whether friendship becomes romance.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher 3 offers mature, carefully written romance through Geralt’s relationships with Yennefer of Vengerberg and Triss Merigold. There is no approval meter and no created protagonist: key narrative tests of honesty and loyalty determine the outcome, while choices also intersect with Ciri’s fate.

Persona 5 Royal

Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Three Houses combines tactical battles, teaching, tea conversations and support ranks. You choose a route, recruit a route-dependent cast and select an S-Support before the final battle; post-war marriages follow in the epilogue.
Both versions of Byleth have same-gender options, although not every S-Support is explicitly romantic. It is Nintendo Switch exclusive and best for readers who valued BG3’s party attachment and tactical decisions more than freeform exploration.
Which newer or softer options are worth considering?
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
The Veilguard has a full roster—Bellara Lutare, Neve Gallus, Taash, Davrin, Lace Harding, Lucanis Dellamorte and Emmrich Volkarin—but its romances are milder than Inquisition and mostly affect late-game dialogue. The Blood of Dawnwalker

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the obvious Larian follow-up for environmental combat, party reactivity and co-op. Its romance exists, but current deep-romance lists do not treat it as a headline strength. Solasta: Crown of the Magister is a strong 5e combat trainer with weaker relationship writing. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, released 24 April 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series and PC, is a linear grief-focused RPG rather than a dating game.
Do not use Wasteland 3 as a romance recommendation: Polygon explicitly notes that it has no romance system. Disco Elysium excels at dialogue and role-play but has no party-romance structure. Pillars of Eternity and Deadfire have strong writing, with Deadfire allowing companions to bond with each other, yet they are weaker matches for BG3-style player romance.
