If you want to listen while keeping your ears open to traffic, announcements, or people nearby, start with open-ear headphones or bone-conduction headphones—not another pair of smart glasses. Bone conduction is the sport-focused choice; open-ear and clip-on earbuds can feel more natural for everyday listening; audio sunglasses make sense when you want speakers built into eyewear. None is a universal replacement: each trades some privacy, bass, or noise isolation for awareness and comfort.
Choose by what matters most
| Your priority | Best category to consider | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Running, cycling, or a secure fit for sport | Bone-conduction headphones | They leave the ear canal open, but bass and noisy-environment performance can be limited. |
| Everyday listening with a more natural sound presentation | Open-ear speakers | They can leak sound and do not isolate you from surrounding noise. |
| A compact open-ear fit that stays attached to the outer ear | Clip-on open earbuds | Fit, call quality, and sound leakage vary by design; check compatibility with glasses. |
| Audio and sunglasses in one device | Audio sunglasses | You are buying eyewear as well as audio, and the frame must suit your fit and lens needs. |
| Privacy, strong bass, or isolation in loud places | Sealed earbuds may be a better fit | They cover or occupy the ears, so they do not preserve the same awareness as open formats. |
Open-ear and bone-conduction designs both leave the ear canal open, but they do not work the same way. Bone-conduction transducers vibrate through the area near the cheekbones. Open-ear speakers send sound through the air from a position near the ear. That distinction affects comfort and sound character, so it is worth choosing by fit as well as by the label on the box.

How the alternatives differ
Bone-conduction headphones
These sit against the head near the cheekbones rather than sealing the ear canal. They are a strong place to start for running and other activities where a stable fit and awareness matter. Some sport-oriented models are designed for water exposure, but water resistance is model-specific; confirm the rating and intended use before swimming or wearing headphones in wet conditions. A bone-conduction design is not automatically suitable for swimming.
The compromise is sound. Since the ear is open and the transducers work through vibration, these headphones may not deliver the bass, privacy, or isolation that a sealed earbud can. In a loud setting, surrounding noise can make listening harder. If you want music to dominate the environment, this is probably not the right format.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Open-ear speakers
These position small speakers near the ear without plugging the canal. They can sound more like ordinary speakers than bone-conduction headphones, while still allowing nearby sound to reach you. They are worth considering for walks, calls, and everyday listening when you do not want an in-ear fit.
Because sound travels through the air, people close to you may hear some of what you play, especially at higher volume. They also provide little help in a loud environment. Compare the wearing position with your glasses and helmet: both can compete for space around the ear.

Clip-on open earbuds
A clip or cuff holds each small speaker on the outer ear. This can give a more secure feel than a speaker that simply rests near the ear, without sealing the canal. It is a practical option for listeners who want an open fit but do not want a headband-style frame.
Clip geometry is personal. Check whether the clip presses against glasses arms, whether it stays put during your intended activity, and whether controls are easy to reach. If you take calls, look for microphone details rather than assuming that an open design guarantees clear speech. Also consider sound leakage: an open fit is not a private listening mode.

Audio sunglasses
Audio sunglasses integrate near-ear speakers and controls into a sunglass frame. They can combine eyewear with music, podcasts, and calls, without putting anything in the ear canal. Vezra’s product documentation describes this arrangement and hands-free calling; it also cautions that earbuds may be preferable for loud places, stronger bass, privacy, and isolation. The documentation was accessed October 25, 2026.
Audio sunglasses are a fit-led purchase. Consider whether the frame suits your face, whether it works with prescription lenses if you need them, and whether you would wear sunglasses often enough to justify having audio tied to eyewear. They are not a direct replacement for AI-glasses camera or assistant functions: the documented Vezra features are audio, frame controls, and calls. Do not assume a camera or a particular assistant is included.

These figures come from product pages and a category guide, not a controlled head-to-head test across all four formats. They are useful for narrowing a shortlist, but they do not establish which model sounds best, fits every head, or lasts longest in real-world use. Confirm the current price, stock, and specifications on the manufacturer’s page before buying.
How to choose the right type
- Decide whether awareness is essential. For listening while moving near other people or traffic, an open format keeps the ear canal unobstructed. It does not make any activity risk-free: keep volume low enough to notice your surroundings and follow local rules for headphones while cycling or driving.
- Match the fit to the activity. For running or sport, compare bone-conduction models and their stability. For ordinary walks or desk use, try open-ear speakers. If you want a compact attachment, consider a clip-on design. For sunglasses-first use, evaluate the frame as carefully as the audio.
- Check resistance against your actual exposure. IPX7 is the Sudio B5 rating reported on its product page; IP54 is the BUTTONS Clip rating. These ratings are not interchangeable, and neither should be treated as a blanket promise for every kind of water or dust exposure. Follow the maker’s care and use guidance.
- Test compatibility with glasses or a helmet. The physical space around your ears is limited. A clip, speaker arm, headband, or sunglass temple can press against another item. If possible, try the combination you plan to wear before committing.
- Be realistic about privacy and noise. Open designs let surrounding sound in, but can also let your audio out. In a loud place, a sealed earbud may provide better isolation and stronger bass; choose it only when awareness is not your priority.
- For calls, inspect the actual microphone setup. The BUTTONS Clip page lists dual beamforming microphones and a VPU bone-conduction sensor, while Vezra documents hands-free calls. Those feature descriptions do not guarantee call quality in wind or traffic; look for relevant use-specific evidence if calls are critical.
- Check the exact product page before purchase. Confirm the current price, stock, return policy, battery claim, supported phone features, and intended water use. A listed maximum playback time is not necessarily what you will get at your chosen volume or in every use case.
When open-ear listening is the wrong choice
Open formats are not the best option for every listener or environment. If you need strong noise isolation for a loud commute, want bass-heavy listening, or need audio that is less audible to people nearby, sealed earbuds may suit you better. Vezra’s product documentation makes the same distinction for its sunglasses: it positions them for casual music, podcasts, and calls while moving, while noting that earbuds can be preferable when loudness, bass, privacy, or isolation is the priority.

Also reconsider an open device if you expect it to replace the non-audio capabilities of AI glasses. The alternatives covered here are listening devices or audio sunglasses; the cited product information does not establish camera, visual-assistant, or general-purpose AI features for them. Buy for the function you need, not the resemblance of the frame or form factor.
Quick Recap
Bottom line by use case
- For sport: Start with bone conduction, then check stability and the exact water-resistance specification for your activity. Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 is the named sport recommendation in the cited 2026 guide.
- For everyday open listening: Compare open-ear speakers with clip-on earbuds by comfort, leakage, and fit alongside glasses.
- For combined eyewear and audio: Consider Vezra only if you want audio sunglasses specifically; verify current availability and frame suitability.
- For bass, privacy, or isolation: An open format is a compromise, so compare with sealed earbuds instead.
