Lookhu Adapt is the clearest purpose-built option identified for turning eligible public-domain books into screenplays. Its published workflow covers source material, story structure, characters, scenes, screenplay development, production prompts and release preparation. The U.S. page lists a free plan, Creator at $9.99 per month and Studio at $29.99 per month, with AI video generation charged separately through metered credits. Those are published feature and price claims checked October 25, 2026—not an independent quality test.
AI can accelerate an adaptation, but it cannot settle your rights, guarantee continuity across a full novel or make every generated line copyrightable. The reliable process is to verify the exact edition, build a source-grounded story bible, keep a human in charge of the adaptation choices, and compare tools on long-document handling, screenplay formatting, revision controls, export and total cost.

Which AI tool is best for adapting a public-domain book?
For a reader who wants one service aimed specifically at adaptation rather than a generic chatbot, Lookhu Adapt is the strongest direct match in the available evidence. Its public description starts with eligible public-domain material and moves through story development, characters, scenes, a screenplay, production prompts and distribution preparation.
That description establishes what the service says it does. It does not establish that it produces better scripts than general-purpose language models, handles every full-length novel reliably or preserves continuity without supervision. No independent performance scores or comparative script-quality tests are available here, so treat the product as a workflow candidate and test it with your own text before committing.

| Lookhu Adapt | Eligible public-domain classics; story, characters, scenes, screenplay, production prompts and release workflow | Free; Creator $9.99/month; Studio $29.99/month | AI video generation uses separately purchased metered credits. Commercial rights vary by plan and eligible output. |
Because only one directly matched product had sufficiently clear official feature and pricing information, this is not a definitive ranking of the entire AI market. A general-purpose AI writing or script application may still be preferable if it accepts your complete manuscript, maintains a dependable story bible, exports industry-standard screenplay files and gives you stronger revision control.
What AI can and cannot do in a book-to-screen adaptation
What it can help with
- Condensing a long narrative into a logline, synopsis and beat sheet.
- Identifying major characters, goals, conflicts, settings and recurring motifs.
- Suggesting a feature-film, television-pilot or short-film structure from the source.
- Breaking chapters or scenes into visual actions, dialogue and transitions.
- Generating alternative scene orders, stakes, endings or character arcs for a human writer to evaluate.
- Creating production-oriented prompts such as locations, props, mood, shot ideas and continuity notes.
- Finding repeated names, timeline conflicts or missing motivations during revision.
What it cannot guarantee
- That the edition you found online is free to adapt.
- Accurate memory of every event in a full-length novel when the manuscript exceeds a tool’s context or project limits.
- Faithful characterization after aggressive compression.
- Professional screenplay formatting unless the service explicitly supports it and you inspect the export.
- Exclusive copyright in every AI-generated passage.
- Commercial rights to every output, especially when a plan limits those rights or charges separately for generated video.
The practical implication is simple: use AI for analysis, options and drafting speed, but keep a human adaptation brief, continuity record and final editorial decision at every stage.
Verify public-domain status before you upload anything
An online copy is not proof of free reuse
The Library of Congress warns: “Just because we’ve put a work online doesn’t mean that you can freely reuse it.” Its guidance tells users to check the item-level Rights and Access or Rights Advisory statement and cautions that catalog records can occasionally be inaccurate or incomplete.
Identify the exact copy you intend to adapt. Record the author, title, publication date, publisher, edition, translator, editor, illustrations, introduction, notes and cover art. The underlying original may be public domain while a later translation, scholarly apparatus, illustrations or editorial material remains protected.
U.S. rules are not worldwide rules
In the United States, the Copyright Office currently identifies works published in the U.S. before January 1, 1931 as public domain because their copyright term has expired. That cutoff is a U.S.-specific guide, not a universal rule. Publication history, renewals, later editions and the country whose law applies can change the result for foreign works or works first published elsewhere.
Adaptation matters because the Copyright Office lists preparation of derivative works among a copyright owner’s exclusive rights. A screenplay, film treatment or series bible based on a protected book can therefore require authorization even when your script contains substantial original writing.
Create a rights file

Lookhu Adapt: features, plans and trade-offs
Published workflow
Lookhu Adapt presents a single path from eligible public-domain source to story development, characters, scenes, screenplay, production prompts and distribution preparation. That integrated sequence is useful when you want one project space instead of moving text between separate outlining, scriptwriting and production tools.
The service’s public wording does not prove how many pages a project can ingest, how continuity behaves on a complete novel, which screenplay file formats it exports or how revisions are versioned. Confirm those points in a trial with a representative chapter and a deliberately difficult continuity test.

|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | One active project and basic screenplay development | Input length, export options, retention and whether commercial use is restricted |
| Creator | $9.99/month | Full workflow and commercial-use rights for eligible Adapt output | What “eligible” covers, cancellation treatment, export formats and project limits |
| Studio | $29.99/month | Five seats; additional seats listed at $5/month | Whether seats share projects, administrator controls, storage and collaboration history |

Recheck the live terms before purchase because subscription prices, included limits and commercial-use language can change. A low monthly fee can become expensive if you repeatedly buy video credits or need several seats.
Step-by-step workflow for adapting a book into a screenplay
1. Define the adaptation before opening the tool
Write a one-page brief that states the intended format, audience, approximate running time, tone, rating, point of view and degree of fidelity. Decide whether you are making a feature, pilot, limited series, short film or proof-of-concept. A tool can generate plausible scenes, but it cannot choose what your project is trying to be.
Also list non-negotiables: essential characters, indispensable events, themes that must survive compression and elements you are willing to remove or combine. This prevents the AI from treating every paragraph as equally important.
2. Establish a clean source and continuity ledger
Use the verified edition, not a random web transcript. Divide the text into labeled sections and create a ledger with character names, aliases, ages where stated, relationships, locations, chronology, objects and unresolved questions. Mark facts as explicit, inferred or uncertain. The ledger becomes your reference when the tool proposes a change.

3. Ask for analysis before asking for scenes
Start with structured outputs: a logline, premise, cast list, setting list, chapter summaries, central conflict and thematic motifs. Compare those outputs with the book. Correct omissions and hallucinated details before generating dialogue. If the service cannot hold the entire text, work in controlled sections and maintain a master story bible outside the tool.
4. Build a beat sheet and adaptation map
Map source events to screenplay functions: setup, inciting incident, escalating complications, midpoint reversal, crisis, climax and resolution. Label each beat as retained, combined, moved, invented or removed. The labels make your human contribution visible and expose where the adaptation departs from the book.
5. Generate one scene at a time
For each scene, provide the location, time, participating characters, objective, obstacle, turning point, continuity dependencies and the beat it serves. Request action and dialogue separately from explanatory commentary. Review every generated scene against the source ledger before moving on; correcting a wrong relationship or timeline early is cheaper than repairing a whole draft.
6. Enforce screenplay conventions during revision
Check slug lines, action paragraphs, character cues, parentheticals, dialogue, transitions and scene numbering. Do not assume that a visually screenplay-like answer is production-ready. Open the exported file in the screenwriting software or editor your collaborators use, inspect page breaks and correct formatting manually.
7. Run dedicated continuity passes
Use separate passes for character motivation, chronology, geography, props, names, tone and unresolved subplots. Ask the AI to list conflicts and cite the scene where each fact originated, then verify those references yourself. Treat unsupported “fixes” as suggestions, not authoritative corrections.
8. Preserve versions and human decisions
Save the source edition, prompts, generated drafts, your notes and final revisions with dates. Keep a change log that records which scenes you selected, rewrote or rejected. This record helps with collaboration, rights questions and later registration analysis.
How to compare other AI writing tools
If you test a general-purpose language model or scriptwriting application alongside Lookhu Adapt, use the same chapter sample, adaptation brief and evaluation rubric. Compare capabilities rather than marketing labels.

| Criterion | What to test | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Full-book handling | Maximum input, upload types, chunking method, project memory and retrieval accuracy | A tool that loses early chapters will break character and timeline continuity. |
| Source grounding | Whether answers identify the supplied passage and distinguish text from inference | Grounding reduces invented details and makes review faster. |
| Character and plot control | Story-bible fields, locked facts, reusable instructions and contradiction checks | Adaptations require consistency across dozens of scenes. |
| Scene-level control | Beat, objective, conflict, point of view, length and tone controls | Specific controls produce more usable alternatives than one giant prompt. |
| Screenplay output | Slug-line formatting, pagination, scene numbering and export to a standard file | Formatting errors create manual cleanup and collaboration friction. |
| Revision workflow | Version history, side-by-side comparison, targeted rewrites and rollback | You need to experiment without losing a coherent draft. |
| Privacy and retention | Training use, deletion controls, workspace access and retention period | Unpublished scripts and licensed material may be confidential. |
| Commercial terms | Ownership language, permitted uses, plan restrictions and generated-media licenses | A subscription price alone does not establish your distribution rights. |
| Total cost | Subscription, credits, seats, storage, exports and reruns | Frequent regeneration can outweigh a low headline price. |
Run a short, difficult test rather than judging a polished paragraph. Include a minor character who appears early and returns later, a time jump, a repeated prop and an event that must not happen until a specified scene. Record omissions and contradictions as well as attractive prose.

Using AI does not automatically make a script uncopyrightable, and it does not automatically give you exclusive rights to every generated sentence. The U.S. Copyright Office’s January 2025 summary says protection may apply where a human author determines sufficient expressive elements. It also says that providing prompts alone is insufficient, while AI assistance or inclusion of AI material does not prevent protection for a larger human-created work.
In practical terms, make substantial creative decisions yourself: select and arrange source elements, design the adaptation structure, write or substantially rewrite dialogue and scenes, and decide what remains in the final draft. Keep evidence of those decisions in outlines, drafts, notes and revision history. The Office’s position is guidance about human authorship, not a guarantee for a particular script or registration outcome.
Publishing an adaptation through KDP
If you plan to publish the screenplay or a related book through Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, treat its public-domain policy as a separate platform requirement. KDP may request proof of public-domain status and may reject a version that is already freely available unless the edition is meaningfully differentiated.
The policy’s examples of differentiation include a new translation, annotations or at least 10 relevant original illustrations. Those examples concern KDP eligibility; they do not decide whether your adaptation is lawful under copyright. Keep your rights file and be prepared to explain what original contribution your edition contains.

The tool invents events or characters
Reduce the working unit to a labeled passage, require the output to separate “in source” from “suggested,” and check every claim against your ledger. Do not let an invented detail enter the master bible merely because it sounds plausible.
Characters drift between scenes
Create a compact character card for each recurring role: desire, fear, knowledge at each act, relationships, voice and physical continuity. Reattach the cards to scene prompts and run a dedicated contradiction pass after major rewrites.

The adaptation is a summary, not a screenplay
Specify dramatic objectives, obstacles and turning points, then request playable action and subtext rather than chapter recap. A scene should change a relationship, plan or situation; exposition alone is rarely enough.
The output looks formatted but exports badly
Inspect the actual export, not just the browser preview. Correct margins, page breaks, character cues, scene headings and numbering in a dedicated screenplay editor before sharing the draft.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCosts rise unexpectedly
Track subscription fees, seats, video credits and reruns separately. Finish the written adaptation and shot list before purchasing video generations, and confirm whether unused credits expire.
You cannot prove which edition you used
Pause publication, identify the source edition and rights statement, and replace unverified text with a documented edition. A familiar title is not enough evidence.
Choosing the right approach
- Choose a dedicated workflow service when you want source-to-screen planning, production prompts and release preparation in one project, and its input limits and commercial terms fit your needs.
- Choose a general-purpose AI tool when you need flexible prompting, extensive revision experiments or a different export workflow, provided it can handle your manuscript and protect your data.
- Use a hybrid process when no single tool offers reliable long-document memory, screenplay formatting and rights clarity. Keep the source ledger and final draft under your control while using AI for bounded tasks.
Whichever route you choose, run a paid-plan trial only after a rights check and a continuity test. Compare the resulting draft, not the feature list: can the tool preserve the book’s essential relationships, show you where it invented material, support revisions and leave you with terms that permit your intended use?
Verdict
Lookhu Adapt is the most directly aligned option found for public-domain book adaptation because its advertised workflow spans story development through screenplay and production preparation. Start with its free tier or a representative trial, verify long-document behavior and read the current commercial-use terms before upgrading. Do not treat any AI output as automatically lawful or automatically protected: confirm the exact edition’s rights, keep meaningful human authorship in the adaptation and review every scene as if you—not the tool—will be responsible for the finished film.
