Use different AI models for different coding jobs. A fast model is usually the right choice for triage, file reading and repetitive edits; a balanced model handles ordinary implementation and reviews; a deep-reasoning model is better for architecture, difficult debugging and interconnected refactors; and an autonomous coding agent is suited to long-running work that requires workspace access, tool calls and pull-request preparation. Keep tests, explicit verification and human review in the loop.
Using one frontier model for every turn wastes latency and budget on easy requests while still failing to provide the workspace control needed for larger tasks. A role-based stack treats model selection as an engineering decision rather than a popularity contest. Model names, pricing and availability change, so the routing principles matter more than any fixed leaderboard.

Why is using one frontier model for every coding task a mistake?
A single high-end model can produce impressive answers, but coding work has very different requirements from one turn to the next. Reading a file, renaming a symbol across a small module, designing a service boundary and running a multi-step migration do not need the same latency, context handling or autonomy.
Sending every request to the most capable model creates two predictable problems:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Unnecessary cost and delay: a large reasoning budget is spent on transformations that a fast model can complete reliably.
- The wrong execution boundary: a chat model may explain a change well but cannot, by itself, inspect the repository, run tests, edit files and prepare a pull request. An agent with those tools is a better fit for that job.
GitHub’s model-selection guidance separates fast help for simple or repetitive work, general-purpose coding, and deep reasoning or debugging. OpenAI’s agent guidance likewise recommends choosing a model per specialist when quality, latency or cost profiles differ. The practical result is a small portfolio of roles, not one permanent default.
What roles should an AI coding stack contain?
Start with four execution roles and add governance around them. The names of the models can change; the tests for assigning work should remain stable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Role | Best for | Selection test | Evidence for the role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast operator | Triage, small edits, file reads and repetitive transformations | Latency and cost matter more than broad planning | A fast model is assigned to quick operations in Microsoft Foundry’s Claude Code setup; GitHub recommends fast models for simple or repetitive tasks. |
| Balanced implementer | Routine features, code explanations and ordinary reviews | You need dependable quality with predictable speed | Microsoft Foundry assigns Claude Sonnet 4.6 as a balanced primary model; GitHub describes a general-purpose coding tier. |
| Deep debugger | Architecture, multi-file refactors, hard bugs and edge cases | Reasoning depth and context handling dominate latency | GitHub’s comparison guidance identifies a deep-reasoning tier for difficult debugging and complex work. |
| Autonomous agent | Long-running implementation, tool use and pull-request preparation | The task needs workspace access, planning and controllable autonomy | Codex and GitHub Copilot coding agent documentation describe agents that work with repositories, tools and pull requests. |
| Governance layer | Provider permissions, defaults, logging and model routing | A team needs repeatable controls and an audit trail | OpenAI’s per-agent model choice and Coder’s organization-level controls support this layer. |
Microsoft Foundry’s current Claude Code example uses claude-sonnet-4-6 for the balanced role, claude-haiku-4-5 for quick operations and claude-opus-4-6 for optional extended thinking. Availability can change by region, account and service, so treat those names as an illustration of role separation rather than a permanent prescription.
Which model should I use for simple edits and triage?
Use the fast operator when the change is local, repetitive and easy to verify. Its job is to reduce queue time, not to invent a broad plan.
Good fast-operator requests
- Summarize the purpose of a file or function.
- Find all references to a symbol and list the files that contain them.
- Apply a mechanical rename, formatting change or import cleanup.
- Turn a compiler message into a short list of likely causes.
- Generate a small test fixture from an existing pattern.
Give this role narrow instructions and an explicit boundary, such as “edit only these two files.” Ask it to show a diff or a list of touched files. If the model starts proposing architectural changes, route the request to the balanced or deep role instead of letting a low-cost operator expand scope.
Which model is best for ordinary implementation and code review?
The balanced implementer is the default for work that needs real coding judgment but not prolonged investigation. It can turn a ticket into a focused plan, implement a normal feature, explain unfamiliar code and perform a first review with consistent turnaround.
Set a clear contract
Provide the acceptance criteria, relevant files, language and framework versions, and the command that should pass when the change is complete. Ask for tests alongside implementation and require the model to call out assumptions. A balanced model is most useful when the problem is well-scoped; it should not be forced to guess at missing product decisions.

Use review as a separate pass
After implementation, give the reviewer the diff, the original requirements and the test output. Ask it to look for regressions, error handling gaps, security-sensitive input paths and missing tests. A review pass from the same model can miss the assumptions made during implementation, so route high-risk or disputed findings to the deep debugger.
When should a deep-reasoning model handle the task?
Escalate when the important question is not “what line should change?” but “what system behavior should exist across many interacting parts?” Deep reasoning is justified when an incorrect hypothesis would create expensive rework.
Escalation signals
- A bug crosses service, database, queue or cache boundaries.
- A refactor touches many files and must preserve compatibility.
- There are concurrency, security, performance or data-integrity edge cases.
- Tests fail intermittently and the cause is not obvious from one stack trace.
- Several plausible designs meet the ticket but have different long-term costs.
Give the model repository maps, relevant logs, constraints and failed attempts. Ask it to state competing hypotheses, identify evidence for each and design a minimal experiment before editing broadly. The goal is not to spend maximum tokens on every request; it is to spend reasoning effort where a shallow answer is most likely to be wrong.

An autonomous coding agent operates on a goal instead of only answering a prompt. AWS describes the distinction this way: “Unlike autocomplete tools, coding agents actively interpret user goals, query the development environment for context (for example, it opens files and traces errors), identify requirements, and then propose and perform actions.”
In practice, an agent can inspect a workspace, trace an error, edit several files, run builds, tests or linters, and prepare a change for review. GitHub describes its Copilot coding agent as an asynchronous background agent that works in a cloud development environment and opens pull requests. Codex is documented as a coding agent for writing, reviewing and debugging code.
Use an agent for bounded, observable work
Write an objective that includes the repository, acceptance criteria, commands to run and definition of done. Limit credentials and writable paths. Require a summary of files changed, commands executed, failures encountered and remaining uncertainty. The agent should produce a reviewable branch or pull request rather than silently merging its own work.
Do not confuse delegation with autonomy
Anthropic’s Societal Impacts team reported in 2026 that developers used AI for “roughly 60% of their work,” while developers reported being able to “fully delegate” only “0-20% of tasks.” Those are report findings, not universal benchmarks. They indicate that assistance can cover a large share of activity while end-to-end responsibility remains human-led.

How do I build a multi-model coding workflow?
Route each request through a simple sequence. The sequence keeps cheap, fast work moving while creating deliberate checkpoints before risky changes land.
- Triage with the fast operator. Classify the request, locate files, summarize the current behavior and identify the likely test command. Do not authorize broad edits at this stage.
- Implement with the balanced model. For a well-defined feature or bug, provide the triage notes and acceptance criteria. Ask for a small plan, the implementation and focused tests.
- Escalate uncertainty to the deep debugger. If the plan reveals cross-cutting effects, contradictory requirements or repeated test failures, have the deep model inspect the evidence and choose an approach.
- Delegate long-running execution to an agent. Give the agent the approved plan, repository scope, tool permissions and verification commands. Let it perform the mechanical sequence and open a branch or pull request.
- Verify independently. Run the project’s tests, type checks, linters and security checks outside the model’s narrative. Inspect the diff for unintended files, generated artifacts, dependency changes and data migrations.
- Review and decide as a human. A maintainer confirms behavior, operational risk, backward compatibility and rollout or rollback steps before merge.
This workflow also creates useful handoffs. The fast role produces a map, the balanced role produces a candidate change, the deep role resolves ambiguity, and the agent carries out repeatable tool work under an approved plan.
Should I use Claude Code or Codex?
There is no universal winner because the products can occupy different roles in the same stack. Compare the workflow around the model: repository access, terminal and file tools, context handling, test execution, pull-request integration, latency, cost and administrative controls.
GitHub documents model selection for both Claude and Codex agents, while its coding agent runs asynchronously in a cloud development environment and can open pull requests. OpenAI positions Codex as an agent for writing, reviewing and debugging. If your team needs a hosted background worker tied to pull requests, evaluate that integration; if you need a different terminal, IDE or API workflow, evaluate how the agent exposes tools and permissions there.
Cloudflare’s setup catalog illustrates how coding assistants now span terminal, IDE, cloud and extension workflows, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and GitHub Copilot. Portability matters when developers move between local debugging, an IDE and a hosted CI environment.
How should context, tools and verification affect model choice?
Model quality is only one axis. Before assigning a task, check the environment in which the answer must become a working change.
- Context: Can the model navigate the repository and retain the interfaces that matter? A small local edit rarely needs the same context as a multi-service refactor.
- Tools: Does it have terminal, file, test, linter, browser or pull-request access? A model cannot verify an action it cannot perform.
- Verification behavior: Does it inspect existing tests, run the relevant commands and report results, or merely claim that the code should work?
- Latency and cost: Estimate the number of turns and retries, not just the price of one response. A faster model can be cheaper even when it needs an occasional escalation.
- Deployment and governance: Check provider allow-lists, data policies, logging, retention and who can authorize tool actions.
- Portability: Decide whether the same role must work in an IDE, command line, hosted service and API pipeline.
How can a team govern a role-based stack?
Put the routing policy in writing. Define which roles may read, edit, execute commands, access secrets or open pull requests. Start agents with read-only access when possible, and grant write or network permissions only for a stated task.

Multi-provider administration can make this practical. Coder documents organization-level defaults, model selectors and support for Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Azure OpenAI, AWS Bedrock, OpenAI-compatible endpoints, OpenRouter and Vercel AI Gateway. The point is not to use every provider; it is to keep provider choice, approved models and fallback behavior under team control.

Record the evidence needed for review
- The task specification and model role selected.
- Files changed and tools or commands run.
- Test, lint and build results, including failures.
- Any data, dependency or configuration changes.
- The human reviewer and the decision to merge, revise or revert.
These records let you compare real outcomes without pretending that a single benchmark ranks every model. Track escaped defects, review time, rework, latency and cost by task category. If a fast role frequently requires rescue, narrow its scope or move that category up to the balanced role.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What are the common failure modes?
The fast model edits beyond the request
Use file and behavior boundaries, request a diff, and reject changes outside the stated scope. Escalate if the requested “small” edit reveals an API or schema dependency.
The balanced model guesses at missing requirements
Require an assumptions section and ask questions before implementation when acceptance criteria conflict. A short clarification is cheaper than a polished feature built on the wrong behavior.
The deep model over-engineers
Give it a decision deadline and a minimal-change constraint. Ask for the smallest design that satisfies the current requirement, plus separately labeled follow-up options.
The autonomous agent reports success without proof
Make test, lint and build commands part of the definition of done. Inspect their actual output and rerun critical checks independently; a narrative summary is not verification.
Provider availability changes
Model identifiers, regions and service capabilities can change. Keep role labels such as “fast,” “balanced” and “deep” in your policy, then map them to currently approved models and test the mapping when providers update their catalogs.

How much of coding should an AI stack do by itself?
Let the stack automate bounded execution, not accountability. AI can often handle a large portion of searching, drafting, transforming and testing, but the decision to accept behavior, expose a security risk or alter production data belongs to a responsible human. The safest operating rule is simple: increase autonomy only when the task has clear acceptance tests, reversible changes and observable tool activity.
A role-based stack therefore is not a hunt for the single “best” AI model for coding. It is a routing and verification system that matches capability to risk, keeps routine work fast and reserves expensive reasoning and autonomy for the cases that actually need them.

How often should a team change the model assigned to a role?
Review the mapping when a provider changes a model, context limit, tool integration or availability, and on a regular cadence using your own task metrics. Keep the role contract stable so a model swap does not require rewriting every engineering process.
Can I hand work from one model to another without losing context?
Yes, if each handoff includes the task goal, repository locations, assumptions, current diff, failed commands and open questions. A compact handoff record is more reliable than expecting the next model to infer history from a long chat transcript.
What security checks matter before enabling an autonomous agent?
Use least-privilege credentials, isolate secrets, restrict writable directories and require approval before network access or pull-request creation. Log tool calls and review generated dependency, configuration and migration changes as carefully as application code.
How can I measure whether role-based routing is helping?
Compare task categories before and after routing using cycle time, token or API spend, review effort, rework, escaped defects and successful first-pass verification. Segment the numbers by task type; an aggregate average can hide improvement in routine work while difficult refactors remain unchanged.

What should happen when an agent gets stuck?
Stop the run when it repeats the same failed action, expands scope or changes tests to make them pass. Capture the current state, send the evidence to a deep debugger for diagnosis, then restart the agent with a narrower, explicitly verified plan.
