For most small businesses, the best starting point is Microsoft Defender for Business if you already use Microsoft 365 and have a person or managed service provider who can act on alerts. Choose Bitdefender GravityZone when you want package-based endpoint protection managed from one cloud console. Choose Huntress Managed EDR when nobody on your team can monitor and respond to detections, especially overnight.

Those products solve endpoint security and incident response. They do not automatically control how employees use ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude, or other generative-AI services. If staff are pasting sensitive information into AI apps, add a separate AI-governance layer for shadow-AI discovery, application policies, prompt data-loss prevention, and prompt-injection or harmful-prompt defenses.

What should a small business look for in an AI cybersecurity tool?

Start with the operating model rather than the word “AI.” A useful purchase must cover your devices, identities, cloud services, and response capacity. AI-assisted detection can reduce analyst workload, but it does not remove the need to onboard devices correctly, set policy, review high-severity alerts, and recover from incidents.

Match the tool to your Microsoft 365 environment

Microsoft 365 shops can gain identity, device, and security-policy integration from Defender for Business. That can reduce the number of separate consoles and agents. If your company uses another email, identity, or productivity stack, compare how the candidate integrates with it instead of assuming Microsoft-specific benefits will transfer.

#1 Best Overall

Count every endpoint and operating system

Inventory Windows PCs, Macs, phones, tablets, servers, remote workers’ devices, and permitted BYOD equipment. A product that protects only Windows laptops may leave a file server, executive Mac, or mobile device as an unmonitored path. Confirm whether mobile protection, server licensing, and personal-device enrollment are included or priced separately.

Decide who responds to an alert

Self-managed EDR is a capability, not a staffed security operation. Someone must investigate detections, contain a device, communicate with the employee, preserve evidence, and restore normal operation. If no employee or MSP can do that at the required speed, a managed detection and response service is usually a better fit than buying a deeper console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate endpoint security from AI-use governance

Antivirus and EDR look for malicious code, suspicious behavior, and attacks on devices. AI-use controls answer different questions: Which AI sites are employees using? What information is being submitted? Which models or plug-ins are approved? Can a prompt contain credentials, customer records, source code, or regulated data? Treat these as two buying tracks that may be integrated later.

Which Microsoft Defender option fits a small business?

Microsoft Defender for Business is designed for organizations with up to 300 users. It is based on Microsoft Defender for Endpoint and supports Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, and Android. The service combines next-generation antivirus, endpoint detection and response, vulnerability management, automated investigation and remediation, centralized management, and automatic attack disruption.

What Defender for Business includes

  • AI-powered EDR: correlates endpoint signals to identify suspicious behavior and present an incident view rather than isolated antivirus pop-ups.
  • Automatic attack disruption: can interrupt active attacks when Microsoft’s detections reach the required confidence level.
  • Vulnerability management: shows exposed software and device weaknesses so you can prioritize remediation.
  • Automated investigation and remediation: examines alerts and can apply response actions according to your automation settings and Microsoft’s threat verdicts.
  • Cross-platform coverage: supports the four operating-system families listed above, subject to current feature and licensing details.
  • Central administration: gives a technical owner or MSP one place to configure policies, review incidents, and track device health.

How automated remediation works

Microsoft documents actions that an automated investigation may take, including quarantining files, killing processes, stopping services, removing registry keys or scheduled tasks, disabling drivers, and isolating devices. Whether an action happens automatically or waits for approval depends on your automation setting and the threat verdict. Test those settings with a pilot group: an overly cautious configuration can delay containment, while an unrestricted one can interrupt a legitimate line-of-business application.

What Defender costs

Option Published price Important limits and inclusions
Defender for Business $3.00 per user per month, paid yearly (Microsoft, 2026) Designed for up to 300 users; Microsoft lists support for up to five devices per user.
Microsoft 365 Business Premium $22.00 per user per month, paid yearly (Microsoft, 2026) Includes Defender for Business along with the broader Business Premium subscription.

These are published annual-commitment prices, not a quote for every region, tax situation, reseller, or optional service. Check the current commercial terms before signing. Compare the per-user allowance with your actual device count: a user with a desktop, laptop, phone, tablet, and test device can consume all five listed device slots.

Fortinet FortiGate-30G Firewall for Small Offices with 4 Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 Ports (FG-30G)
  • Single appliance with integrated firewalling, SD-WAN and Wi-Fi controller reduces complexity of WLAN management. Its zero-touch deployment helps optimize your onboarding experience.
  • Built on a patented secure processor, this compact network firewall delivers the highest level of security and performance in its class – 800 Mbps IPS | 500 Mbps threat protection.
  • User-friendly management console gives you centralized visibility and simplifies policy enforcement across your network. Its zero-touch deployment helps you optimize your onboarding experience.
  • Compact and fanless design equipped with 4 GE RJ45 ports (1 WAN port and 3 internal ports) provide essential connectivity and flexibility for various network configurations in a small-scale environment.
  • Fortinet is the most deployed and trusted firewall from businesses worldwide with 99.98% security effectiveness, surpassing competition. Fortinet is the only vendor recognized as a firewall leader 13 consecutive years by Gartner.

Who should choose Defender?

Choose it when your business already lives in Microsoft 365, can assign a technical owner or MSP, and wants endpoint, identity, and vulnerability information in a Microsoft-centered workflow. Budget time for licensing assignment, device onboarding, exclusions, alert routing, and a documented response playbook. Defender is not automatically a 24/7 staffed SOC; your team still owns response unless you contract that work separately.

Is Bitdefender GravityZone a better centralized endpoint platform?

Bitdefender GravityZone is a unified, cloud-based platform for SMB endpoint protection. Its packages combine machine-learning detection with controls for ransomware, phishing, web attacks, network attacks, web access, devices, patches, and endpoint risk. Optional capabilities include cloud sandboxing and fileless-attack defense.

Controls available across GravityZone packages

  • Ransomware defense: detects suspicious file-encryption behavior and can protect against common ransomware techniques.
  • Anti-phishing and web protection: blocks malicious links and unsafe web destinations, subject to the package and policy selected.
  • Network attack defense: adds protection against attacks arriving through network traffic rather than a downloaded file.
  • Web access and device control: lets administrators restrict categories of sites or removable-device behavior where the selected tier supports it.
  • Patch management: helps identify and deploy operating-system or application updates in supported environments.
  • Risk analytics: surfaces endpoint weaknesses so administrators can prioritize high-risk devices.
  • Cloud sandboxing and fileless-attack defense: optional layers for suspicious files and attacks that abuse memory or trusted tools instead of dropping a conventional executable.

The practical advantage is a single cloud console for a small Windows-heavy or mixed-device office. The main buying risk is assuming every SMB tier contains every control. Request a package-by-package feature sheet and verify server, macOS, mobile, patching, sandbox, and device-control coverage before comparing prices.

When GravityZone makes sense

GravityZone fits a company that wants a conventional endpoint-security deployment with centralized policy and reporting, but does not need Microsoft 365 to be the organizing center of security operations. It can also suit an MSP managing several small offices. Confirm who receives high-severity alerts, how isolation is initiated, and whether your administrator can export incident records for insurance or compliance requirements.

When should a small business buy Huntress Managed EDR?

Huntress Managed EDR is the managed-response choice in this comparison. The key difference is operational: you are buying monitoring and response by security personnel, not only a tool your staff must operate. That distinction matters for very small, distributed, or owner-led companies that cannot provide reliable after-hours coverage.

What the managed service changes

  • Security personnel monitor detections instead of leaving a queue for an already busy office administrator.
  • Analysts investigate suspicious activity and escalate according to the agreed process.
  • Response can begin outside normal business hours, subject to the service’s coverage and contract.
  • Your internal contact still needs to approve business-impacting actions, provide context, and coordinate recovery.

Managed EDR is not a guarantee that every incident will be prevented. It is a way to shorten the time between a detection and a qualified decision. Ask what actions analysts may take without approval, what evidence you receive, how they contact you during an incident, and whether the service handles servers, Macs, Linux systems, mobile devices, and BYOD that matter to your business.

Questions to ask before signing

  1. What is the minimum endpoint count, and are servers billed differently?
  2. Which operating systems and versions are supported today?
  3. Is the agreement monthly or annual, and what happens when you add or remove devices?
  4. Does the quoted tier include containment, remediation guidance, and post-incident reporting?
  5. Who is the escalation contact if the first person does not respond?
  6. Can the service integrate with your existing antivirus, identity provider, ticketing system, and cyber-insurance requirements?

Do endpoint tools protect employees using ChatGPT and other AI apps?

Not by themselves. Endpoint products can detect malware delivered through an AI site or a compromised browser, but they generally do not provide complete visibility into prompts, uploaded files, approved models, or sensitive data leaving through an AI application. Add an AI-use security layer when generative AI is part of normal work or employees are using it without a formal policy.

What an AI-governance layer should cover

  • Shadow-AI discovery: identifies unapproved AI sites, browser extensions, plug-ins, and accounts in use across the organization.
  • AI-application governance: lets administrators classify tools as approved, restricted, or blocked and apply policies by department or data type.
  • Generative-AI data-loss prevention: detects sensitive information in prompts or uploads and can warn, block, redact, or log the event depending on the product.
  • Harmful-prompt and prompt-injection defense: helps identify attempts to manipulate an AI system, bypass safeguards, extract hidden instructions, or make an enterprise agent perform an unsafe action.
  • Audit and reporting: records policy decisions and incidents so security, legal, and management teams can review use without relying on employee self-reporting.

Products in this newer category include Microsoft Purview, CrowdStrike AIDR, Acronis GenAI Protection, Palo Alto Prisma AIRS, WitnessAI, Nightfall AI, Harmonic Security, and Ovalix. Their deployment models and strengths differ, so evaluate whether you need a browser or network control, an API gateway, a data-classification integration, or an agent on managed devices. Do not treat an AI-governance product as a replacement for endpoint antivirus or EDR unless its current documentation explicitly provides that protection.

How should you deploy the chosen tool?

A controlled rollout prevents a security product from becoming an expensive source of false alarms or coverage gaps.

  1. Build an asset list. Record every user, device, operating system, server, cloud identity, remote location, and BYOD exception. Mark devices that handle payment data, customer records, source code, or administrator credentials.
  2. Define response ownership. Name the person who receives critical alerts, the backup contact, the MSP or managed service if applicable, and the authority to isolate a device. Write down the maximum acceptable response time for a suspected ransomware event.
  3. Pilot on representative devices. Include a Windows workstation, Mac if present, mobile device, shared workstation, and a device running essential business software. Check performance, VPN behavior, line-of-business applications, and alert quality before broad enrollment.
  4. Configure identity and least privilege. Use separate administrator accounts, multifactor authentication, role-based access, and a break-glass recovery method. Do not give every help-desk user permission to disable protection.
  5. Set automation deliberately. Start with automatic actions for high-confidence malware and test isolation, file quarantine, process termination, and service stopping. Route ambiguous detections for approval until you understand the business impact.
  6. Connect notifications to a channel someone watches. Email alone is easy to miss. Use the platform’s supported ticketing, collaboration, or mobile notification options and test an alert from end to end.
  7. Apply update and vulnerability policies. Prioritize internet-facing systems, browsers, remote-access tools, and devices with known exploitable software. Document exceptions with an owner and expiration date.
  8. Write an incident runbook. Include isolation authority, customer and insurer notification rules, evidence preservation, password-reset order, backup validation, and restoration steps. Keep a printed or offline copy in case the business identity system is compromised.
  9. Add AI-use rules. Define approved AI services, prohibited data, review requirements for generated code or customer communications, and a process for reporting suspected prompt injection or accidental disclosure.
  10. Review monthly. Check inactive agents, unmanaged devices, unresolved high-severity alerts, vulnerability trends, policy exclusions, and AI-use events. Remove stale accounts and adjust controls as the business changes.

What common buying and deployment mistakes should you avoid?

Buying the deepest console without staffing it

An advanced EDR dashboard does not investigate itself. If alerts remain unread until Monday, a managed service can reduce risk more effectively than adding another detection module.

Comparing per-user and per-device prices as if they were identical

Defender’s published price is per user and lists up to five devices per user. Other vendors may quote per endpoint, per server, per site, or per monitored user. Normalize the quote against your real inventory, expected growth, mobile coverage, and the number of administrators who need access.

Assuming every package includes every feature

GravityZone SMB tiers differ, and managed EDR contracts differ in operating-system support, response actions, and minimum endpoint count. Ask for the exact SKU or service tier in writing.

Ignoring remote and personal devices

Home networks, unmanaged phones, and contractor laptops can hold the same credentials as office systems. Decide whether they are enrolled, restricted to web access, or prohibited from handling sensitive work.

Allowing broad exclusions to silence false positives

Excluding an entire folder, interpreter, or security control may hide the behavior an attacker would use. Prefer the narrowest exception, document its owner, and set a review date.

Treating AI policy as an acceptable-use paragraph only

A policy cannot show which tools employees actually use or stop a prompt containing confidential data. Pair clear rules with discovery, data controls, training, and a way to investigate violations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Skipping recovery tests

Detection is only one part of resilience. Test that backups are isolated from ordinary administrator credentials, that a quarantined device can be rebuilt, and that the business can operate while an account or endpoint is unavailable.

Which tool should you choose?

Use this decision sequence to narrow the shortlist:

  1. Already standardized on Microsoft 365? Pilot Microsoft Defender for Business first, provided a technical owner or MSP will manage alerts and onboarding.
  2. Need a centralized endpoint console with layered package options? Evaluate Bitdefender GravityZone and compare the exact SMB tiers against your Windows, Mac, server, and patching requirements.
  3. No one can monitor or respond after hours? Evaluate Huntress Managed EDR or another managed service, focusing on escalation, containment authority, supported systems, and contract limits.
  4. Employees use generative AI with company data? Add an AI-governance product for discovery, application controls, prompt DLP, and prompt-injection defenses; keep endpoint protection in place.
  5. Need more than one layer? Combine endpoint protection with managed response or AI governance only where a defined gap exists. Assign ownership for every alert and policy so overlapping tools do not create conflicting actions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a small business use Microsoft Defender for Business without Microsoft 365?

Defender for Business is available as its own per-user plan, while Microsoft 365 Business Premium includes it. The operational advantages are greatest when your identities, devices, and administration already run in Microsoft’s ecosystem; verify current licensing and onboarding requirements for your environment.

Is managed detection and response worth it for fewer than 10 employees?

It can be, particularly when nobody can investigate alerts during evenings, weekends, travel, or holidays. Compare the service minimum, response authority, supported devices, and escalation process with the cost of leaving a serious alert unattended.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can we stop employees from pasting confidential data into an AI chatbot?

Combine a written data policy with discovery of the AI services actually in use, application-level restrictions, and prompt data-loss prevention. Test controls with realistic examples such as customer exports, credentials, source code, and internal financial documents, then train staff on approved alternatives.

Do these tools protect Linux servers and network appliances?

The supplied product details specifically confirm Defender support for Windows, macOS, iOS/iPadOS, and Android, while GravityZone and Huntress coverage depends on the selected package or service. Ask each vendor for a current operating-system matrix and plan compensating controls for systems without an agent.

What should we show a cyber-insurance underwriter?

Prepare an asset inventory, endpoint coverage report, multifactor-authentication settings, vulnerability and patch records, alert-response runbook, backup test results, and evidence of recent incident or phishing exercises. Keep the documents dated so you can demonstrate that controls are maintained rather than merely purchased.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
