Use an active composite-to-HDMI converter for a VCR, older DVD player, camcorder, or retro console when your television has HDMI but no matching analog input. It accepts the source’s yellow video and red/white audio plugs, converts the analog signal to digital, and sends it over HDMI. Choose an S-Video-capable converter when the device provides S-Video. If both the source and TV have Y/PB/PR component connections, use component video instead for a cleaner picture, but connect separate red/white audio leads because component carries no sound. A passive RCA-to-HDMI cable cannot perform this conversion.
What adapter do I need for an old VCR or console and a new TV?
The correct adapter depends on the output on the legacy device and the inputs remaining on the television. First identify the source connection, then select hardware that explicitly converts that signal to the TV’s input. A cable that merely changes a plug’s shape is not enough when an analog source must feed a digital-only HDMI input.

New televisions increasingly omit composite and component sockets. An LG support article dated August 14, 2025, describes the resulting incompatibility between analog peripherals and digital televisions. If your set has only HDMI, an active converter is the dependable route.
Is an RCA-to-HDMI cable the same as a converter?
No. RCA cables carry the analog signal; HDMI carries digitally encoded audio and video. Conversion requires powered electronics that digitize, synchronize, and usually scale the incoming signal. A passive cable with RCA plugs on one end and an HDMI plug on the other cannot do that work, even though the connectors may fit physically.

Look for a box that specifies an analog input, HDMI output, supported NTSC and/or PAL formats, power requirements, and an output resolution. The converter should label its sockets as input and output. Connecting a source output to another output, or buying a cable that omits a powered converter, will produce no usable picture.
Which legacy connection gives the best picture?
Use the highest-quality output that both the source and TV support. In practical order, a native HDMI output is best, followed by component, S-Video, composite, and finally RF. The last four are analog formats, so an HDMI-only television still needs an active conversion stage.

| S-Video | Luminance and color are separated | Usually cleaner than composite, especially on text and edges | Still requires separate audio and an S-Video input or converter |
| Composite | One combined video channel on the yellow plug | Works with almost every VCR and many consoles | Color and detail share one channel, increasing artifacts |
| RF/coaxial | Audio and video modulated onto a television channel | Lowest-quality and most troublesome option | Needs a tuner-compatible RF solution and correct regional channel settings |
Sony’s input guidance describes component as a higher-quality analog video connection than composite and notes that HDMI transfers uncompressed digital video and audio. Sony also notes that SCART availability varies by area; use HDMI directly whenever the player already offers it rather than converting a better digital signal into an older format.
How does a composite or S-Video-to-HDMI converter work?
An active converter receives the analog video, separates or decodes its timing and color information, digitizes it, and packages the result as an HDMI signal. It also digitizes the left and right analog audio so the television can play sound through the same HDMI connection. Because this processing requires power, these units normally use a USB power lead or an external adapter.
What should the converter support?
- Both connector types when possible: S-Video preserves separated luminance and color when the source has that output; composite remains available for devices with only yellow RCA.
- Regional standards: Confirm NTSC, PAL, or both. A mismatch can cause a rolling, black-and-white, unstable, or absent picture.
- Documented scaling: The StarTech VID2HDCON2 datasheet, for example, accepts S-Video or composite video with RCA left/right audio, supports NTSC and PAL, and outputs up to 720p. Its listed applications include VCRs, DVD players, game consoles, and camcorders.
- Audio pass-through: Verify that the unit has left/right RCA audio inputs rather than video-only conversion.
- Latency information: For games, seek a converter that states low processing delay. Every converter buffers or processes the signal differently, and a specification is preferable to assuming all boxes behave alike.
Up to 720p is a converter capability, not a promise that the source contains 720p detail. A VHS recording remains limited by its tape and recording format; the television may upscale the converted frame again.
How do I connect component video and stereo audio?
Use component only when the source and television both expose matching Y/PB/PR sockets. Component improves analog video quality by keeping luminance and color-difference signals separate, but it does not carry sound.
- Find the three video outputs on the source, usually labeled Y, PB or Cb, and PR or Cr.
- Connect the green plug to Y, the blue plug to PB, and the red plug to PR. Panasonic specifies this color mapping; the red component plug is not the same function as the red audio plug.
- Connect the source’s red and white audio outputs to the television’s matching right and left audio inputs. Sony likewise identifies the separate stereo connection required with component video.
- Turn on the source and select the television input labeled Component, Y/PB/PR, or the manufacturer’s equivalent.
If the TV has component video but no corresponding audio jacks, check its manual for an audio input paired with that component bank. Do not plug component leads into composite sockets simply because the colors look similar; the signal assignments are different.

Can I plug the old cables directly into a modern TV?
Yes, but only when the set still has a composite input or a manufacturer-supplied AV dongle. Connect yellow to video, red to right-channel audio, and white or black to left-channel audio, then choose the matching AV input on the TV. TCL’s connector guide uses that exact color convention.
Some thin televisions hide a proprietary multi-pin AV socket instead of providing three RCA jacks. In that case, the dongle supplied for that model is part of the input system; a generic three-RCA cable may not be wired correctly. If no dongle was included, identify the exact TV model before purchasing an adapter rather than guessing from the socket’s shape.
What about SCART, RF, and other legacy outputs?
SCART and RF require output-specific hardware. SCART can carry more than one type of analog signal, and its wiring and availability differ by region. RF output is a modulated television signal rather than a direct baseband video feed, so an RF-capable converter or tuner is required. Do not assume a SCART-to-HDMI or coax-to-HDMI cable alone performs digital conversion.

For example, a player with component, S-Video, or composite outputs should normally use the highest-quality one available instead of RF. For SCART equipment, choose a converter that explicitly states the supported SCART mode and NTSC/PAL standard; otherwise sync and color errors are likely.
How do I set up an active converter step by step?
- Inventory the ports. Read the source labels and the TV labels. Confirm whether the source provides composite, S-Video, component, SCART, RF, or an already-digital output, and note whether the TV accepts HDMI, analog AV, component, or a proprietary dongle.
- Choose the best shared path. Prefer native HDMI, then component, S-Video, composite, and RF. For an HDMI-only TV and a yellow/red/white source, select an active composite-to-HDMI unit; select an S-Video-capable model when S-Video is available.
- Connect the source to converter input. For composite, match yellow video, red right audio, and white or black left audio. For S-Video, connect the S-Video plug and still connect the separate red/white audio leads.
- Connect HDMI output to the TV. Run an HDMI cable from the converter’s HDMI OUT to an HDMI IN on the television. Do not reverse those labels.
- Power everything. Turn on the source, power the converter with its specified USB or adapter supply, and then turn on the TV. Some converters will not lock onto a signal until the source is already playing.
- Select the correct TV input. Use the remote’s Input or Source control and choose the HDMI socket used. If you connected directly to analog AV, choose that AV or Composite input instead.
- Set format and resolution controls. Select NTSC or PAL if the converter has a switch or menu, matching the source. Choose a documented output such as 720p when available; avoid assuming an unmarked 1080p setting improves an old recording.
- Test both picture and sound. Play a known-good tape, disc, or game. Confirm that dialogue and music come from both stereo channels and that the image is stable before routing cables permanently.
Why is there no picture or sound after connecting everything?
Most failures are input selection, cable assignment, power, or video-standard problems. Work through the checks in this order rather than replacing every cable at once.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| TV says No Signal | Wrong HDMI input, converter unpowered, or OUT-to-OUT connection | Power the source and converter, select the HDMI socket actually used, and verify source OUT to converter IN and converter HDMI OUT to TV IN |
| Picture but no sound | Red/white audio leads missing, reversed into the wrong bank, or muted source | Connect both RCA audio plugs to the converter’s audio inputs; check left/right labels and TV volume |
| Black-and-white or rolling image | NTSC/PAL mismatch or unsupported source format | Set the converter to the source’s standard and confirm that the TV and converter support it |
| Colors or geometry look wrong | Component leads inserted into composite sockets, or Y/PB/PR order mixed up | Use the correct input bank and reconnect green to Y, blue to PB, and red to PR |
| Intermittent picture | Loose plug, inadequate converter power, or damaged cable | Reseat every connector, use the specified power supply, and test a known-good cable |
| Game controls feel delayed | Converter processing and TV image enhancements | Choose a low-latency converter specification and enable the TV’s Game or low-processing picture mode if available |
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance likewise starts with reseating connections, confirming the selected input, checking direction, and testing a known-good cable. Change one variable at a time so you can identify the failed link.
How should I choose a converter for retro games?
Games make latency and format compatibility more noticeable than prerecorded video. A converter must first lock onto the console’s NTSC or PAL signal, then process each frame for HDMI. Look for an explicit low-latency claim, the console’s video standard, and a stable output mode rather than selecting solely by connector count.

- Connect Classic RCA Devices to HDMI Displays: Bring older AV equipment back into use by converting yellow, white and red composite RCA signals into HDMI output for newer TVs, monitors and projectors. Choose between 720P and 1080P output at 60Hz to match your display. Please note that this av to hdmi adapter is built specifically for connecting an RCA/AV source to an HDMI display; it cannot convert an HDMI source to RCA/AV.
- Complete 3-Cable Set Included: Includes separate RCA, HDMI and Micro USB cables for video/audio connection, HDMI output and power. The RCA and HDMI cables are detachable for flexible placement and use with compatible equipment. USB power is required for operation. A Micro USB cable is included; a 5V/1A power adapter is not included.
- Selectable 720P and 1080P Output: Use the built-in resolution switch to select 720P or 1080P output at 60Hz based on your TV or monitor. No software or drivers are required. Connect the RCA source, HDMI display and USB power, then select the desired output resolution.
- Compatibility with Legacy AV Devices: Compatible with RCA-output VCRs, VHS players, DVD players, set-top boxes and karaoke systems, as well as compatible PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, Wii, N64, SNES and GameCube systems using RCA/AV output. Supports PAL, NTSC3.58, NTSC4.43, SECAM, PAL/M and PAL/N analog input formats.
- HDMI Output Based on the Original Source:Converts an analog RCA signal to HDMI output with selectable resolution up to 1080P. The av to hdmi converter changes the signal format but does not turn lower-resolution VHS footage or classic game graphics into native HD content. Final picture quality depends on the original source, connected equipment and display. For stable operation, connect the included USB power cable to a 5V/1A USB power source.
- Match the console output: Composite consoles need yellow RCA; systems with S-Video can use a converter that accepts it for cleaner edges.
- Check the TV’s game mode: Extra motion smoothing, noise reduction, and frame interpolation can add delay after the converter has done its work.
- Keep the original audio path intact: Red/white RCA must be connected even when the console’s video plug is S-Video.
- Test with the actual game: A converter can display a menu yet fail on a different regional signal or unusual resolution.
What should I check before buying?
Use this checklist to avoid buying a converter that has the right-looking plugs but the wrong electronics.
- Does the input explicitly say composite, S-Video, component, SCART, or RF, rather than merely RCA?
- Does it accept your regional standard, NTSC, PAL, or both?
- Does it include left/right analog audio input when the source audio is separate?
- Is HDMI clearly labeled as an output, and is the required power supply included?
- What output resolutions are documented? The StarTech VID2HDCON2 datasheet specifies up to 720p; treat that as its stated ceiling, not a guarantee of 1080p.
- Does the manufacturer state latency or gaming suitability if you will use a console?
- Will the TV accept the converter’s output mode on the chosen HDMI input?
- Are you buying a converter rather than a passive cable or a scaler intended for a different connector?
Do not pay for a higher output number to compensate for a poor source. Scaling can make the image fit a modern panel, but it cannot recreate detail lost to VHS tape, composite encoding, or an old camera sensor.
Which setup is simplest for a VCR, DVD player, or camcorder?
VCR
Most VCRs provide composite yellow/red/white outputs; some also provide S-Video. Use S-Video if both the VCR and converter support it, because the separated luminance and color path generally avoids some composite artifacts. Connect the red/white audio independently in either case.
Older DVD player
Check for component output before settling on composite. Component can provide a cleaner analog picture, but it still needs separate red/white audio and a TV with component inputs, or a component-capable converter if the TV is HDMI-only.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCamcorder
Camcorders may use a small proprietary breakout lead that ends in yellow/red/white RCA plugs. Confirm that the breakout cable is the correct one for the camera before connecting it to a converter. If the camera offers S-Video, use an S-Video-capable converter and retain the separate audio leads.
Retro console
Identify the console’s region and connector first. Composite-to-HDMI is the broadest solution, while S-Video can improve clarity when available. Prioritize a converter with documented low latency and test it with the games you actually play.
Can a converter make an old recording look high-definition?
It can place the analog signal into an HDMI format that a modern TV accepts, and it may scale the frame to 720p or another supported mode. It cannot add picture information that was never recorded. Tape noise, composite color artifacts, interlacing, and the original camera or disc quality remain; the TV and converter can only process those limitations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is RCA to HDMI the same as a converter?
No. RCA is an analog connection, while HDMI is digital. A powered converter must digitize the signal; a passive cable only changes the connector shape and cannot create an HDMI picture.
Why does my component connection have video but no sound?
Component uses Y, PB, and PR for video only. Connect the source’s separate red and white stereo outputs to the TV’s matching audio inputs, or to the converter’s audio inputs when converting to HDMI.
How can I tell whether my equipment is NTSC or PAL?
Check the source label, manual, or on-screen system information for NTSC or PAL, then confirm that the converter supports that standard. A mismatch commonly appears as an unstable, monochrome, or missing picture.
Will an HDMI converter remove lag from a retro console?
No. Conversion itself can add processing delay, and the TV can add more through picture processing. Choose hardware with a stated low-latency mode and use the TV’s game or low-processing mode when available.
What if my new TV has no yellow, red, or white sockets?
Use an active converter matched to the source output and connect its HDMI output to the TV. If the television came with a model-specific AV dongle, that dongle is the only direct analog-input option for that set.
