Neither Star Wars Battlefront II is universally better. Choose the 2005 game if you want Galactic Conquest’s turn-based fleet map, adjustable Instant Action, the 501st campaign and space missions that let a pilot land inside an enemy capital ship. Choose the 2017 release if you want all three film eras, class and hero loadouts, Galactic Assault, Starfighter Assault, Supremacy and Co-Op. They share a name but are different designs: Pandemic Studios made the 2005 classic, while EA’s 2017 project involved DICE, Motive and Criterion. The sections below match each game to the kind of play you actually want, then explain editions, offline options, progression and the dated launch controversy.
| Name | Best for | Key spec | Platforms | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Star Wars Battlefront II (2005) | Strategic offline replay and classic space battles | Galactic Conquest, adjustable Instant Action, 501st campaign, ship-boarding space missions; publisher listing supports up to 64 players | PC (separate Steam and GOG editions) | Oct 2026 |
| Star Wars Battlefront II (2017) | Modern objective modes, all three film eras and loadout progression | Galactic Assault, Starfighter Assault, Supremacy, Co-Op; four trooper and three starfighter classes; historical design capacity up to 40 players | PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One | Oct 2026 |
What are the real differences between the 2005 and 2017 games?
They are separate games, not editions of one ruleset. The classic was developed by Pandemic Studios and is listed with a November 1, 2005 release date. EA announced the later game for a worldwide launch on November 17, 2017, naming DICE, Motive and Criterion among its developers (EA’s launch announcement).

The 2005 manual treats the war as a sandbox of factions, planets, fleets and interchangeable battle scenarios. The 2017 design organizes play around authored objectives, role-based classes, hero abilities and a progression system that spans a much larger set of online modes. Calling one a straight graphical upgrade of the other gives the wrong buying advice.
What do you control before a battle?
In the 2005 game, the strategic layer and the battle setup are closely connected. Galactic Conquest lets you move a fleet, choose a target planet, recruit and apply bonuses, then fight the resulting ground or space encounter. Instant Action also exposes adjustable battle settings, so the same map can serve as a quick skirmish or part of a longer offline session. Four factions and six soldier classes are listed for the classic, giving its scenarios a broad set of faction and role combinations.

The 2017 game shifts preparation toward loadouts. Its manual identifies four trooper classes and three starfighter classes, while Star Cards and hero customization let you tune abilities and equipment for a mode. That is a more specialized setup than simply selecting a faction and map. It also means that a player who enjoys building a role for Galactic Assault or Starfighter Assault will find more systems to manage in 2017.
Which game has the better offline sandbox?
The 2005 game is the clear choice for a strategic, replayable offline sandbox. Galactic Conquest places fleets on a turn-based galaxy map; you capture planets, recruit units and use bonuses before fighting the resulting battles. The original manual describes the objective as using strategy to take control of planets and dominate the galaxy (original PC manual).

How Galactic Conquest works in 2005
- Move fleets between planets on a strategic turn.
- Capture a planet to expand your faction’s territory.
- Recruit troops and apply bonuses that affect the next battle.
- Resolve the conflict in a ground or space scenario, then return to the map.
Because the map, starting conditions and battle choices can vary, this mode supplies a campaign-like loop without requiring a human opponent. It is the feature most often lost when the two games are treated as interchangeable. It also gives victories a consequence beyond the scoreboard: a successful battle changes which planets and resources are available on the next turn.
What the 2017 game offers offline
The later release does have offline play. EA added AI-controlled missions to Instant Action, so you can fight without entering a live multiplayer match. That is a battle-focused sandbox rather than a turn-based fleet campaign: its Instant Action matches do not reproduce Galactic Conquest’s planet movement, recruitment or strategic bonuses.
Supremacy can sound similar because it uses large maps and era-wide objectives, but it is a match mode, not the 2005 fleet-map system. If your deciding question is “Does the new Battlefront 2 have Galactic Conquest?”, the answer is no. Choose 2017 for repeatable AI battles with its newer classes and eras; choose 2005 when the map-level decisions are the reason you keep replaying.
How do the multiplayer modes compare?
2017 has the broader modern objective-mode lineup; 2005 has simpler battles with more room for custom setup. EA’s 2017-era manual specifies 20-versus-20 Galactic Assault matches, while EA’s launch material described modes supporting up to 40 players. Those are historical design capacities, not a promise that a full lobby is available in October 2026.
| Mode or feature | 2005 classic | 2017 release |
|---|---|---|
| Large ground objective battles | Classic conquest-style battles with faction and map choices | Galactic Assault with structured, multi-stage objectives; manual specifies 20 vs. 20 |
| Era coverage | Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War settings | Prequel, original and sequel film eras across multiplayer |
| Starfighter mode | Space battles integrated into the wider battle selection | Dedicated Starfighter Assault with objectives, specialized craft and customization |
| Large-map mode | Galactic Conquest supplies the strategic layer | Supremacy provides match-based territory objectives, not a fleet map |
| Co-op | Not the defining mode of the original release | Co-Op missions against AI across the later game’s era and class systems |
The classic publisher listing advertises support for up to 64 players online. Treat that as a supported maximum, not evidence that 64-player matches are easy to find now; no comparable October 2026 cross-platform population figure is established.

The mode names also signal different pacing. A 2005 battle can be selected as one component of a larger campaign or configured as a standalone fight. In 2017, Galactic Assault is built around staged objectives, Starfighter Assault is a dedicated space scenario, Supremacy is a large match-based contest and Co-Op puts a small team against AI. If you want one ruleset that changes according to a strategic map, the classic is the closer fit; if you want several purpose-built playlists, 2017 offers more variety.
Can you board enemy ships in each Battlefront II?
Only the 2005 game explicitly promises the classic boarding scenario. Its published description says a pilot can land on an enemy Star Destroyer and continue the fight inside the ship. That makes space combat part of a connected ground-and-ship assault rather than a self-contained dogfight. A player deciding between the games on the question “Can you board enemy ships in Battlefront 2?” should therefore choose the classic.
The 2017 Starfighter Assault mode is objective-based and features specialized starfighters and customization. EA’s documentation does not establish that its normal starfighter matches use the 2005-style landing-and-boarding mechanic, so do not buy the newer game expecting that specific interaction. Its strength is a dedicated objective playlist and craft roles, not a repeat of the older capital-ship interior sequence.

The choice is about viewpoint, not campaign length or a universal quality ranking. The 2005 story follows the 501st Legion through the Empire’s rise, giving the original game a military-history frame that connects Clone Wars battles to the Galactic Civil War.
The 2017 single-player story follows Iden Versio and Inferno Squad after Return of the Jedi. Its multiplayer expands beyond that perspective to the prequel, original and sequel eras, so it is the better match if you want sequel-era characters and locations alongside the older films.
- Pick 2005 for a clone-trooper-to-Imperial narrative and the 501st perspective.
- Pick 2017 for Iden Versio’s post-Endor story and a multiplayer roster spanning three film eras.
The campaign choice does not determine the multiplayer era range. The 2005 narrative’s Imperial rise is distinct from its battle selection, while 2017’s Iden-focused story sits alongside multiplayer content covering all three trilogies. A buyer interested mainly in story perspective should decide between those premises rather than assuming the newer release is simply a continuation of the older campaign.
How different are the classes, heroes and progression systems?
The 2005 classic lists six soldier classes across four factions, with a straightforward battlefield role structure. The 2017 manual describes four trooper classes and three starfighter classes, then adds Star Cards and hero customization to tune abilities and equipment.

That distinction affects how each game feels to organize. In 2005, faction and map selection do most of the setup work. In 2017, choosing a class and arranging its cards is part of preparing for a mode, and heroes are integrated into the broader progression system. The class counts are not scores: they describe different systems built for different eras of design.
For a player who wants a fixed, recognizable role, the classic’s class-and-faction structure is easier to summarize. For someone who likes changing a trooper or starfighter build between objectives, 2017 provides the deeper preparation layer. Neither count tells you how balanced or enjoyable a class is, and no performance test is being used to rank them.
Is Battlefront II (2017) pay-to-win now?
The launch system and the later system are different. Before release, EA temporarily disabled in-game purchases amid concerns that paid items could create unfair advantages (EA’s pre-launch update). Describing that launch arrangement as if it were permanent is inaccurate.
In March 2018, EA redesigned progression so gameplay-affecting Star Cards could be earned through play. Purchasable Crystals were directed toward appearances rather than combat power. Cosmetic purchases therefore remain part of the later game; the accurate summary is that the progression redesign removed purchasing Star Cards as the route to gameplay advantages, not that every paid item disappeared.
If monetization is your deciding factor, distinguish three dates: the pre-launch purchase suspension, the March 2018 progression redesign and the later Celebration Edition content listing. A launch-era description of Crates and Crystals does not describe the post-redesign system, and the existence of cosmetic purchases does not establish that combat upgrades can still be bought.
Can you play either game offline and on a television?
Both games have documented offline options, but the details depend on the release and platform.
2005 on PC
The classic supports single-player battles through Instant Action and its campaign-oriented modes. Steam and GOG distribute separate PC listings. GOG states that its installer can be installed without GOG Galaxy, while its online multiplayer requires Galaxy; it also documents cross-play support with Steam (GOG’s listing).

2017 on PC and consoles
Instant Action supplies AI missions for solo play. Lucasfilm identifies two-player offline split-screen for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions; that qualification does not establish split-screen for the PC release. The Steam Celebration Edition requires an EA Account.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThus “offline” and “couch co-op” are separate questions. A solo player can use the documented AI options, but a buyer wanting two people on one screen must verify the console version. The documented 2017 split-screen qualification is PS4 and Xbox One, not PC.
What about the Classic Collection?
Aspyr’s Classic Collection is a separate console route to the older Battlefront games. It should not be confused with the original 2005 PC DVD, Steam build or GOG build when checking features, saves or platform support. Its inclusion of split-screen is evidence about that collection, not proof that every 2005 release has identical console features.
Which edition should you buy?
Choose the edition that matches the device and account requirements you accept, not just the year in the title. Prices and stock change by store, so the documented format and account conditions are more reliable buying criteria than a temporary sale price.
For the 2005 classic
- Steam: a separately listed PC version of the classic.
- GOG: a DRM-free PC listing with an offline installer; Galaxy is required for its online multiplayer according to GOG.
- Physical disc: the original PC manual instructs owners to insert the game DVD in a DVD-ROM drive. The phrase
Star Wars Battlefront II 2005 PC DVD-ROMidentifies that format, but an old disc’s modern-PC compatibility and a seller’s stock must be checked individually.
For the 2017 release
- Steam Celebration Edition: requires an EA Account and includes listed cosmetic content.
- Cosmetic cutoff: the Steam listing excludes customization released after December 20, 2019, so do not assume every later appearance is included.
- PS4 physical copies: verify the disc’s edition and included content before buying; the existence of a PS4 release does not make every listing a Celebration Edition.
If avoiding an additional account is your priority on PC, the GOG classic has the clearest documented offline-install path. The 2017 Steam release’s EA Account requirement is part of the purchase decision. A physical 2005 DVD is a different product from a digital listing, and a PS4 2017 disc is not automatically the Celebration Edition.
Does the 2017 game still receive regular content updates?
EA’s April 2020 development letter said the team was “moving away from delivering regular content updates” after more than two years of additions. EA also described 25 free content updates in that period and anticipated continued servers and support at the time. Those statements document the historical support transition; they do not prove October 2026 server uptime, matchmaking health or a current player count.
Likewise, early activity figures such as 156 million Crait showdowns, more than 10 million faction quests and a 58% First Order versus 42% Resistance split describe the game’s first-season history, not its present population. They can illustrate the scale of the game’s early live-service period, but they should not be read as current sales or active-user totals.

How should you decide in one minute?
- Choose 2005 when a turn-based galaxy map, adjustable offline battles, the 501st campaign or boarding enemy capital ships is non-negotiable.
- Choose 2017 when you want sequel-era content, structured objective modes, dedicated starfighter matches, Co-Op and class-based loadouts.
- Check the platform first if couch co-op matters: the documented 2017 split-screen option is for PS4 and Xbox One, while the Classic Collection is a separate product.
- Check the account model if you want the least account-dependent PC purchase: GOG’s classic installer works offline, but its online mode needs Galaxy; the 2017 Steam edition needs an EA Account.
- Ignore launch-era monetization summaries when judging the 2017 release; use the post-March 2018 progression rules instead.
- Do not use capacity as a population claim: 64 players for the classic and up to 40 for historical 2017 modes describe supported design limits, not guaranteed 2026 matchmaking.
How we picked
The comparison weighs documented design differences rather than performance testing: strategic and offline tools, mode structure, space-combat mechanics, campaign perspective, class systems, platform qualifications, account requirements and the dated progression changes. Player counts, graphics quality, compatibility and lobby wait times are not ranked because no comparable October 2026 measurements are established here.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2005 Battlefront II version DRM-free?
The GOG edition is presented as a DRM-free download that can be installed without GOG Galaxy. GOG still requires Galaxy for that edition’s online multiplayer, so “DRM-free” does not mean every network feature is account-free.
Does the Celebration Edition contain every cosmetic released for the 2017 game?
No. The Steam listing says its included customization excludes content released after December 20, 2019. Check the exact listing and platform edition if a particular appearance matters to you.
Will a 64-player match in the 2005 game be easy to find?
No conclusion about current availability follows from the advertised 64-player maximum. That number describes supported match capacity, not the size or activity of today’s matchmaking pool.
Did EA’s 2020 update letter announce a server shutdown?
No. It announced a move away from regular content updates and discussed continued service expectations at that time. The letter is not a guarantee of server uptime or matchmaking activity in October 2026.
Does Battlefront II (2017) have Galactic Conquest?
No. It has offline Instant Action missions and the match-based Supremacy mode, but neither reproduces the 2005 game’s turn-based fleet movement, planet capture, recruitment and strategic bonuses.
Can you play Battlefront II (2017) offline?
Yes. Instant Action provides AI-controlled missions. Two-player offline split-screen is documented for the PS4 and Xbox One versions; that qualification does not establish split-screen on PC.
Which game is better for space combat?
Choose the 2005 classic if boarding an enemy capital ship matters: its published description explicitly allows a pilot to land on an enemy Star Destroyer and fight inside. Choose 2017 for a dedicated objective-based Starfighter Assault mode with specialized craft and customization.
Are the Classic Collection and the 2005 PC game the same release?
No. Aspyr’s Classic Collection is a separate console route to the older games. Treat its features, saves and platform support separately from the original PC DVD, Steam listing and GOG listing.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: buy the 2005 classic for Galactic Conquest, adjustable offline replay, the 501st perspective and ship boarding. Buy the 2017 release for three film eras, structured objective modes, dedicated starfighter battles, Co-Op and class-based loadouts. Neither choice is a universal upgrade; the right answer depends on which of those features you will actually use.
