There is no fair single-number ranking of shooter launches. Electronic Arts says Battlefield 6 sold more than 7 million copies worldwide in its first three days, while Activision reported more than $800 million in worldwide consumer sell-through for 2022’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II over the same length of time. One figure counts game units; the other counts dollars, and neither announcement supplies the matching number needed for a clean head-to-head. The comparisons below keep each game’s year, territory, metric, product inclusions and time window attached to the figure.

How much did Battlefield 6 sell at launch?
Electronic Arts announced that Battlefield 6 sold more than 7 million copies in its first three days worldwide, calling it the biggest launch in the franchise’s history. The announcement does not provide a corresponding three-day revenue total, so multiplying 7 million by a list price would be an estimate rather than a reported result. See the EA launch announcement for the publisher’s wording and date.
That result is a unit count, not a statement that EA collected seven million full-price payments. Copies can include different editions, regional prices, digital sales and physical sell-through reported under the publisher’s definition. Without an opening-dollar figure, the safest conclusion is limited to units: more than 7 million in three days and a franchise record.

How does it compare with Battlefield 3?
EA reported 5 million Battlefield 3 units sold in its first week in 2011. That is a longer seven-day window than Battlefield 6’s three days, so the figures should not be treated as a direct rate comparison. The older announcement is useful as historical context, not as evidence that one title had a larger first-week pace.
The original Battlefield 3 release describes estimated global consumer sell-through. Its geography and measurement are therefore different from any retailer shipment or regional launch claim.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDid Battlefield 6 outsell Call of Duty?
The answer depends on what “outsell” means. Battlefield 6 has a publisher-confirmed global unit total—over 7 million copies in three days. Activision’s comparable 2022 announcement for Modern Warfare II reports dollars, not copies: more than $800 million in worldwide consumer sell-through during its first three days. Because one title is measured in units and the other in revenue, the available announcements do not prove that Battlefield 6 sold more copies than Modern Warfare II, or the reverse.
Activision separately said Modern Warfare II exceeded $1 billion in worldwide consumer sell-through by day 10. That later milestone is not a launch-weekend number and cannot be substituted for the three-day result. The three-day announcement is available from Activision.
What the 2025 US chart does—and does not—show
Circana data reported for the 2025 US calendar year put Battlefield 6 first in tracked full-game dollar sales and Black Ops 7 fifth. That is a market ranking for US sales accumulated across the calendar year, not a worldwide opening-weekend unit contest. The report also notes that Black Ops 7 was available through Game Pass and that Battlefield 6 launched earlier, factors that affect how a calendar-year chart should be read.

A separate November 2025 Circana report said Battlefield 6 had the highest US first-month full-game dollar sales since 2022’s Modern Warfare II. “First month,” “calendar year” and “first three days” are separate windows. The chart reporting is summarized by Video Games Chronicle; it does not establish matching global launch totals for the two games.
What is the biggest Call of Duty launch?
Among the figures in the cited announcements, Modern Warfare II (2022) has the largest clearly reported recent three-day revenue result: more than $800 million worldwide in consumer sell-through. That is the best answer if “biggest” means publicly disclosed worldwide launch revenue over three days. It is not a claim about the most copies sold, because Activision did not publish a matching global unit count in that announcement.
Modern Warfare 3 (2011): units and dollars with different territories
Activision reported more than 6.5 million Modern Warfare 3 units and more than $400 million in the first 24 hours, but those day-one figures covered North America and the United Kingdom. The same release reported more than $775 million worldwide over five days. Calling 6.5 million a worldwide day-one total would overstate what the company disclosed.
Modern Warfare 2 (2009): an older regional benchmark
For 2009’s Modern Warfare 2—a different game from 2022’s Modern Warfare II—Activision Publishing estimated approximately 4.7 million units and $310 million in the first 24 hours across North America and the UK. It is a useful historical benchmark only when the territory and company-estimate qualifier remain attached.
Other Call of Duty revenue announcements
- Modern Warfare (2019): more than $600 million in worldwide consumer sell-through in three days. Activision said the total included sales of the Defender DLC pack, so it is not a game-only revenue figure.
- Black Ops III (2015): more than $550 million in worldwide consumer sell-through in three days, with no corresponding unit total established here.
- Black Ops 4 (2018): more than $500 million worldwide in three days, with the publisher’s definition including season-pass sales.
- Black Ops II (2012): more than $500 million in estimated worldwide consumer sell-through in the first 24 hours. The publisher-page retrieval for this historical item is not available in the cited material, so it should be treated as a period announcement rather than a modern audited series.
These numbers answer different questions. Add-on content, season passes and regional scope can materially change the total even when two headlines use the same phrase such as “first three days.”

How do Call of Duty launch sales compare with Halo?
Halo provides both a cleaner software-revenue example and a warning about bundled totals. Microsoft reported more than $220 million in worldwide sales for Halo 4 in its first 24 hours. A separate $300 million week-one figure was presented as a projection, not as the final first-week result.
For Halo 5: Guardians, Microsoft reported more than $400 million in worldwide first-week sales from games and hardware combined. That can include console or accessory revenue, so it must not be placed beside a game-only Call of Duty number as if both measured software purchases. The distinction is why Halo 4’s first-day software figure and Halo 5’s games-plus-hardware week are listed separately.
Does $500 million for Destiny mean consumers bought $500 million on day one?
No. Activision’s Destiny announcements distinguish two measures. The game generated more than $325 million in worldwide consumer sell-through during its first five days, while a separate “over $500 million on day one” figure counted sell-in to retailers and first parties. Sell-in is inventory purchased by retailers or platform holders; consumer sell-through is what customers bought through those channels.
Sell-in can precede or exceed immediate consumer purchases because stores and digital storefronts stock inventory for expected demand. It therefore cannot be read as $500 million of day-one consumer spending, nor compared directly with a consumer sell-through figure without preserving the definition.
Why is Apex Legends not directly comparable?
Apex Legends reached more than 10 million players in its first 72 hours, according to launch-era statements from Electronic Arts and Respawn. It is a free-to-play game, so players are an audience-reach measure rather than paid copies sold or launch revenue. A player count can include people who paid nothing and cannot be converted into a sales total without additional data.

The same caution applies to concurrent-user records, downloads and account registrations: they describe participation, not the number or value of purchased games.

October 2026 reporting about a prospective Modern Warfare 4 opening did not provide a hard launch-sales total from Activision. A $40 billion figure attributed to Xbox leadership refers to lifetime revenue for the Call of Duty franchise, not to Modern Warfare 4’s opening weekend. It cannot fill the missing three-day units or dollars for that individual game.
Guinness World Records separately records more than 500 million cumulative Call of Duty copies, based on an Activision Blizzard statement recorded in 2024. Cumulative franchise copies likewise combine many releases and years; they are not evidence of a single title’s launch performance. The reporting on the change in Activision’s disclosure practice is covered by Kotaku.

How should you compare shooter launch sales?
Use a fixed comparison rule before reading a leaderboard. The following checklist prevents the most common category errors:
- Match the metric. Compare paid units with paid units, or consumer sell-through dollars with consumer sell-through dollars. Do not turn players, downloads or hardware revenue into game sales.
- Match the time window. Three days, 24 hours, five days, one week and a calendar year answer different questions.
- Match the territory. A North America-and-UK day-one figure is not a worldwide day-one figure. State the geography every time.
- Check what is included. DLC packs, season passes, hardware bundles and retailer sell-in can all inflate a headline compared with game-only consumer purchases.
- Name the title and year. The 2009 Modern Warfare 2 and 2022 Modern Warfare II are different releases.
- Do not infer missing units. Dividing revenue by an assumed price ignores discounts, editions, regional pricing, subscriptions and add-on content.
How we picked the figures
The comparison uses publisher or platform-holder disclosures that identify a game, year, metric and observation window, then preserves each source’s territory and product definition. Where a like-for-like number is not disclosed, the table says so by omission rather than estimating it. The result is a set of defensible benchmarks, not an all-time worldwide shooter ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can launch revenue be converted into an estimated number of copies?
Only with assumptions that the announcements do not establish. Regional prices, deluxe editions, discounts, subscriptions, downloadable add-ons and platform fees mean a simple revenue-divided-by-price calculation would not be an observed unit total.
Why do publishers sometimes report sell-in instead of consumer sales?
Sell-in is the value of inventory sold to retailers or first-party storefronts, while sell-through records purchases by customers. Sell-in can reflect stock prepared for expected demand, so it may not track the number of players who bought the game on that day.
Recommended Free Tools
Does a Game Pass release make a game’s sales ranking lower?
A subscription can change how access is counted because some players receive the game through a membership rather than buying a standalone copy. That is one reason a full-year dollar chart should not be interpreted as a pure measure of audience size or quality.
Where can I verify the Battlefield 6 edition before buying?
EA’s announcement identifies a PS5 Standard Edition, but it does not verify a particular retailer’s physical format, region or stock. Check those details on the live merchant listing before purchasing.
