Barclays plans to eliminate about 5,000 full-time positions globally by the end of 2026, equal to roughly 5% of its workforce. The bank links the reduction to a broad efficiency program—technology investment, platform modernization, process simplification and increased use of artificial intelligence—rather than claiming that an AI system is directly replacing every job. About 60% of the planned reductions are in support functions, including developer roles. Around 1,000 positions had already gone in the first half of 2026, with most of the remaining reductions expected in the second half.
How many Barclays jobs are being cut by the end of 2026?

Did Barclays cut 5,000 jobs because of AI?
Not solely, and not in the narrow sense of replacing 5,000 people with software. Barclays describes the move as “organisational simplification and technology change efficiency driven by AI.” That wording combines several levers: consolidating processes, upgrading core platforms, removing duplicated work and using AI to make remaining employees more productive.
Chief executive CS Venkatakrishnan said AI “has an important role to play and may have a more important role to play in the future.” His explanation places AI after the underlying technology work. He said AI is “the icing on the cake – it’s not the cake – because you need to do the infrastructure build to get the benefits of AI.” In practical terms, the bank is presenting AI as an incremental productivity gain made possible by years of modernization, not as the sole cause of the restructuring.

Which Barclays roles are affected by the AI-linked cuts?
The clearest disclosed concentration is in support functions, which account for about 60% of the actions. That category includes developer roles, according to CFO Anna Cross. Support functions can also include internal operations and other enabling teams, but Barclays has not released a complete list of affected job families.
Why developer roles are included
Barclays’ explanation is that AI and newer platforms allow existing teams to deliver more with fewer people. A reduction in developer headcount therefore does not necessarily mean software development is being abandoned; it can indicate consolidation of systems, automation of routine coding or testing, and a shift toward standardized platforms. The public statements do not quantify how many developer jobs are affected.

What does “AI is the icing on the cake” mean?
Venkatakrishnan’s phrase distinguishes AI from the infrastructure required to use it reliably. Banks must first modernize data stores, applications, controls and workflows. Once those foundations are in place, AI can automate selected tasks, assist employees and reduce processing time. The quote is therefore a warning against treating the headcount announcement as a simple one-for-one substitution of humans by generative AI.
How much money will Barclays save?
CFO Anna Cross connected the workforce actions with more than £1.1 billion in planned savings for 2027. That is a forward-looking group savings target, not a figure stated as the direct payroll saving from exactly 5,000 positions. The total can include technology, property, procurement, process and other operating efficiencies alongside employment changes.

The announcement came as Barclays reported third-quarter pre-tax profit of £2.3 billion, up 12% year over year. The profit result and the savings plan provide financial context, but they do not establish that AI alone produced the quarterly increase or that all future savings will come from job reductions.
What is changing inside Barclays’ efficiency program?
The program has four connected elements:
- Technology investment: Modernized platforms can replace duplicated or heavily manual systems.
- Process simplification: Fewer handoffs and standardized workflows reduce the amount of support work required.
- Organizational change: Teams and reporting structures can be combined, producing reductions even where tasks remain.
- AI-enabled productivity: AI tools may assist coding, analysis, service and back-office work, allowing smaller teams to handle existing volumes.
Because these actions overlap, the published evidence supports the description “AI-linked efficiency and technology modernization” more strongly than the claim that AI directly replaced 5,000 workers.

What is known—and not known—about the timetable?
Approximately 1,000 jobs had been removed during the first half of 2026. Barclays expected the remaining reductions to occur during the second half and to be completed by the end of the year. The reports do not provide a final date for each business, details of consultation periods, severance terms or a precise split between voluntary departures, redeployment and compulsory redundancies.
The global figure also should not be read as a complete map of local impact. Most reductions are expected in the UK, but the available disclosures do not specify how many positions will disappear in each country or division.

Why this announcement matters beyond Barclays
The plan illustrates how large banks are framing AI-related workforce change. Rather than attributing every reduction to a single automation project, management is combining AI with years of platform work and cost discipline. The measurable outcome is a planned 5% workforce reduction and a stated 2027 savings ambition; the precise number of jobs eliminated solely by AI remains unreported.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Barclays customers see service cuts because of the redundancies?
No customer-impact assessment was included in the reported announcement. Barclays has not said that branch hours, call-centre availability or product coverage will be reduced as a direct result of this plan.
