For most first-time users, the Bambu Lab A1 is the best starting point. It is designed around straightforward PLA and PETG printing, provides full-auto calibration, and offers a 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume without requiring an enclosure. Choose the A1 Combo instead if you want multicolor printing, because it includes the AMS lite; Bambu says its regular AMS is incompatible with the A1. Choose the enclosed P1S when you expect to print ABS or ASA, need a filtered chamber, or want a broader material path from the beginning. The right choice depends less on headline speed than on your materials, workspace and willingness to manage accessories.

Which Bambu Lab printer is the best first purchase?

The A1 is the clearest beginner choice when your first projects will be ordinary PLA or PETG parts, models and household fixtures. Its automatic calibration and sensors remove much of the mechanical setup that makes a first printer intimidating, while its open design keeps the machine easy to see and access.

The P1S earns the extra consideration when your plans include ABS, ASA or other materials that benefit from an enclosed chamber. It has the same nominal 256 × 256 × 256 mm build volume, but adds an enclosure, extra cooling and an activated-carbon filter. That makes it a more versatile platform, not automatically a better first printer for someone who will only use PLA.

What does the Bambu Lab A1 provide?

The A1 combines a compact footprint with a full set of automated checks. Bambu’s official US listing shows a price of $349 against $399 at the time of that listing; treat the lower figure as the displayed offer rather than a permanent worldwide price.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Build volume: 256 × 256 × 256 mm.
  • Maximum hotend temperature: 300°C.
  • Maximum toolhead speed: 500 mm/s, a manufacturer specification rather than a guarantee that every model or material will print at that speed.
  • Calibration: the product page labels the system “Full-auto Calibration” and documents active flow-rate compensation.
  • Ideal materials: PLA, PETG, TPU and PVA.
  • Monitoring and recovery: filament runout and tangle sensors, filament odometry and power-loss recovery.
  • Camera: a low-frame-rate camera with timelapse support.
  • Connectivity: Bambu documents both LAN-only operation and Bambu Cloud connectivity.

These features reduce setup friction, but automation is not a substitute for a stable table, a clean build plate or supervision when you try an unfamiliar filament. The A1 is an open-frame printer, so the moving parts and hot surfaces remain visible and accessible; keep children, pets and loose clothing away from the machine during operation.

Do you need the AMS lite for multicolor printing?

Only if you want to print in multiple colors or materials through the A1’s supported multi-filament workflow. The A1 Combo includes the AMS lite, while the standard A1 does not. Bambu’s FAQ states that the regular AMS is incompatible with the A1, so buying the older or larger AMS for an A1 will not solve the problem.

Buying the base A1

The base printer is the economical route if you expect to use one spool at a time. You can begin with a single PLA or PETG roll, learn bed preparation and slicer settings, and add compatible hardware later if your projects justify it.

Buying the A1 Combo

The Combo is the straightforward route to multicolor A1 printing because the AMS lite is included from the start. Multicolor work consumes more filament during color changes and adds another system to load and organize, so it is worth choosing the Combo for a real use case rather than for occasional novelty prints.

When does the P1S make more sense than the A1?

Pick the P1S when an enclosed chamber and higher-temperature material support are central to your plans. Bambu lists PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET, ABS and ASA among its ideal materials for the P1S, a wider list than the A1’s stated ideal materials.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Enclosure: the P1S has an enclosed body, which helps maintain a more controlled printing environment for materials such as ABS and ASA.
  • Filtration: it includes an activated-carbon filter. Filtration does not remove the need for sensible room ventilation, especially when printing materials with noticeable fumes.
  • Cooling: Bambu specifies additional cooling hardware.
  • Temperature capability: the hotend is rated to 300°C, matching the A1’s stated maximum.
  • Material limits: Bambu says fiber-reinforced filaments should not be printed directly on a P1S before an extruder and hotend upgrade.

The enclosure also changes access and visibility compared with an open A1. If your projects are limited to PLA and PETG, the P1S’s extra material headroom may not offset the additional cost and the need to think about chamber placement, filtration and ventilation.

How do the A1, A1 Combo and P1S compare?

Model Build volume Hotend Body and filtration Ideal materials listed by Bambu Multicolor hardware
A1 256 × 256 × 256 mm 300°C maximum Open frame PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA AMS lite is optional
A1 Combo 256 × 256 × 256 mm 300°C maximum Open frame PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA AMS lite included
P1S 256 × 256 × 256 mm 300°C maximum Enclosed body, additional cooling and activated-carbon filter PLA, PETG, TPU, PVA, PET, ABS, ASA Choose compatible multicolor hardware separately

All three models share the same stated cube-shaped build volume and 300°C hotend limit. The meaningful buying differences are enclosure, material scope and whether the AMS lite arrives in the box.

How do you make your first Bambu Lab print?

Start with a known material and a small object. A short, uncomplicated print teaches more about loading, adhesion and finishing than a large multicolor project that can fail for several reasons at once.

  1. Inspect the package. Confirm the printer, build plate and included nozzle are present and undamaged. Check that the machine sits level on a stable surface with room for the moving bed and toolhead.
  2. Install the slicer. Download and install Bambu Studio, then follow its printer-connection and configuration screens. Bambu Academy provides structured lessons covering installation, configuration, supports, filament customization and print management.
  3. Complete automatic calibration. Let the printer run its calibration routine before the first job. Do not interrupt probing or other calibration movements, even if the machine pauses briefly.
  4. Load a known-good spool. Begin with PLA from a dry, undamaged spool. Confirm that filament feeds cleanly and that the extruder path is not tangled.
  5. Select a small model. Use a simple MakerWorld model or a calibration object. Keep the first print small enough that you can observe the first layer and stop quickly if adhesion is poor.
  6. Check the first layer. Watch the beginning of the job, verify that lines are sticking evenly, and keep the printer on its stable surface. A successful automatic calibration still depends on a clean plate and correct material selection.
  7. Learn basic maintenance. Before moving to advanced materials, practice removing a finished print, cleaning the plate, loading and unloading filament, and replacing the 0.4 mm nozzle.

Which filament should a beginner use first?

PLA is the simplest first material for most A1 owners because it is explicitly listed among the printer’s ideal materials and works well for models, organizers and prototypes. PETG is a sensible second choice when you need more toughness or heat resistance, but it benefits from learning plate cleaning and release technique first.

Materials on the A1’s ideal list

  • PLA: start here for the broadest range of beginner models.
  • PETG: move to it after you can produce consistent first layers.
  • TPU: flexible filament that requires careful loading and appropriate slicer settings.
  • PVA: water-soluble support material for workflows that specifically need it.

The P1S adds PET, ABS and ASA to Bambu’s listed ideal materials. Do not treat the wider list as a promise that every spool behaves identically: dry storage, plate choice, ventilation and manufacturer profiles still matter. Fiber-reinforced filament requires the P1S extruder and hotend upgrade Bambu specifies; do not feed it through an unmodified machine.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

What supplies and accessories should you budget for?

The printer is only the beginning of ownership. Set aside money and storage space for consumables and wear parts that determine whether the machine is ready when you need it.

  • Filament: keep at least one PLA spool available, then add PETG or another material for a specific project. Bambu’s filament families include PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, PC, TPU, PA and fiber-reinforced options.
  • Build plates: Bambu lists smooth, textured and dual-texture PEI plates. A spare plate lets you continue printing while another plate is cooling or being cleaned.
  • Nozzles: plan for an additional or replacement 0.4 mm nozzle. Nozzle wear, clogs or accidental damage can otherwise stop a project.
  • Multicolor hardware: A1 owners should select AMS lite or the A1 Combo; the regular AMS is not compatible with the A1.

Prices for filament, plates and replacement parts vary by region and date, so calculate the total from the store serving your country rather than assuming the US listing price applies elsewhere.

What connectivity and monitoring features matter in daily use?

The A1 can operate through Bambu Cloud or in LAN-only mode, giving you a choice between remote-connected management and a local network workflow. Its camera is intended for low-frame-rate monitoring and timelapse rather than high-frame-rate video production.

Filament runout and tangle sensors can pause a job when the feed is interrupted, while filament odometry tracks movement through the system. Power-loss recovery helps the printer resume after an outage, but it cannot repair a print that was already detached from the plate or damaged by a collision. Continue to inspect unfamiliar materials and long jobs in person.

What are the most common first-printer mistakes?

Starting with a difficult material

Jumping directly to ABS, ASA or fiber-filled filament adds variables before you know whether the plate is clean or the spool is feeding correctly. Establish a repeatable PLA workflow first, then change one material or setting at a time.

Ignoring the build plate

Finger oils and residue can ruin first-layer adhesion. Clean the plate according to its surface type, avoid touching the print area, and let the plate cool before removing a stubborn part.

Assuming calibration eliminates supervision

Automatic calibration improves consistency but cannot detect every tangled spool, warped model or unsuitable environment. Watch the first layer and keep the printer on a rigid, level support.

Buying incompatible multicolor hardware

For an A1, the compatible path is AMS lite. Verify the exact model before ordering an accessory; the standard AMS does not work with the A1.

Printing fiber-filled material on an unmodified P1S

Bambu specifically requires an extruder and hotend upgrade before fiber-reinforced filament is printed on a P1S. Treat that requirement as a prerequisite, not an optional quality tweak.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Is the A1 or P1S the better long-term choice?

Choose the A1 when your decision criteria are simplicity, PLA/PETG learning and a lower-friction first setup. Choose the A1 Combo when multicolor printing is part of the plan from day one. Choose the P1S when an enclosure, ABS/ASA support, filtration and a broader material roadmap justify the additional hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the A1 print while it is disconnected from the internet?

Yes. Bambu documents LAN-only operation for the A1 in addition to Bambu Cloud connectivity. A local-network setup can therefore keep printer control inside your home network, although cloud-dependent conveniences may not be available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How large can one A1 or P1S part be?

The stated build volume for both models is 256 × 256 × 256 mm. A part larger than those limits must be split into sections and assembled afterward; the printer cannot produce it as one continuous piece.

Does the P1S include the hardware needed for fiber-filled filament?

No. Bambu says fiber-reinforced filaments should not be printed directly on a P1S before an extruder and hotend upgrade. Plan that upgrade before purchasing fiber-filled material, rather than treating it as a later troubleshooting fix.

Is the A1 camera suitable for live video calls or detailed inspection?

The A1 documentation describes a low-frame-rate camera with timelapse support. It is intended for basic progress checking and timelapse capture, not as a high-frame-rate camera system.
