Baldur’s Gate 3 Point-of-No-Return Checklist: Keep Companions and Questlines Alive

Spoilers for Acts 1–3: The safest way to avoid Baldur’s Gate 3’s worst quest outcomes is to make a manual save before every act transition and every location that visibly advances a companion story. Recruit everyone you can, use camp conversations, finish urgent side quests before crossing a threshold, bring the relevant companion to their personal quest, and treat the Emerald Grove, Shadowfell and Mind Flayer Colony as major checkpoints. If you want the broadest roster and the most optional content, do not raid the Emerald Grove; complete Act 2 work before entering the Shadowfell; bring Shadowheart and the Spear of Night; and resolve Mizora’s pod sequence before leaving the colony.

This is a completion-oriented checklist, not a claim that one moral route is objectively correct. Baldur’s Gate 3 is built around consequential choices. A painful ending can be intentional role-playing rather than a failed quest, while a seemingly minor omission can permanently remove a companion or faction branch.

What counts as a “worst” outcome in BG3?

Not every bad result has the same cost. Losing approval, losing a dialogue option, losing a companion, locking out a quest and ending the entire run belong to different categories. Use this severity scale when deciding whether to reload.

Severity What it means Typical response
1. True game over The run ends because a warning was ignored or a late-game condition is met. Reload a save from before the warning or accept that the campaign is over.
2. Permanent companion loss A companion dies, leaves permanently or becomes unavailable for recruitment. Reload before the triggering conversation or location if that character matters.
3. Permanent quest or faction lockout A companion quest, faction branch, rescue, region objective or reward can no longer be completed. Return to a save before the relevant act transition or quest checkpoint.
4. Tragic but playable ending The character reaches a painful, intended conclusion while the campaign continues. Decide whether the outcome fits your role-playing goals; it is not automatically a failure.
5. Approval loss or failed check A companion disapproves, a conversation changes or a single check fails. Usually continue. These consequences are much smaller than losing a character or quest.

Judge a choice on four separate axes: party status, quest access, world-state cost and run status. A decision can leave your party intact while removing refugees, prisoners or faction rewards; another can be emotionally grim but preserve the rest of the game. This distinction prevents every disapproval reaction from being treated as the “worst” ending.

How do I keep the most companions in Act 1?

The single largest early content decision is the Emerald Grove conflict. If your priority is the largest roster and the most optional companion content, protect the Grove rather than choosing the raid route.

Do not raid the Emerald Grove on a completion-oriented run

The documented result of raiding the Grove is that Wyll and Karlach leave and Halsin becomes unavailable. This is not an invalid route: it is a deliberate role-playing branch with different rewards and a different party. It is simply the choice with the largest immediate cost to companion coverage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The consequence is larger than one reward chest or one quest objective. Removing Wyll and Karlach changes later personal quests, camp conversations and possible ending combinations; losing Halsin removes his recruitment and the content attached to him. If those stories matter, resolve the goblin conflict without raiding the Grove before moving on.

Recruit companions before crossing regional thresholds

Recruit Astarion, Gale, Lae’zel, Shadowheart, Karlach and Wyll when their recruitment opportunities are available, then check camp after major conversations. Larian’s official FAQ describes companions as exchangeable at camp and identifies the Origin Characters as Astarion, Gale, Lae’zel, Shadowheart, Karlach, Wyll and the Dark Urge. Dismissing someone temporarily is different from losing them permanently, so use camp to confirm where a companion is before assuming a quest has failed.

Speak with companions at camp after recruitment, after a major personal discovery and after a difficult conversation. A missed camp conversation is often an approval or dialogue loss rather than a death, but repeated regional progression can change which scenes remain available. Save before hostile or apparently final conversations instead of relying on an autosave made after the decision.

Resolve Karlach’s early engine work first

Handle Karlach’s recruitment and infernal-engine work before heading to the Rosymorn Monastery Trail or the Shadow-Cursed Lands. Treat that move as a practical deadline: if Karlach’s early quest is still unresolved, remain in the earlier region and complete it before advancing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not leave Lae’zel’s crèche situation hanging

Lae’zel’s crèche storyline is another high-cost checkpoint. Advancing beyond the crèche without resolving her situation can damage or remove later parts of her arc. Bring her to the relevant location, use camp conversations to follow up, and save before the final confrontations there.

What should I do before entering the Shadowfell?

Think of the Shadowfell as an Act 2 point of no return for several companion and side-quest states. Finish the work you want from Act 2 first, then enter with the correct companion and item.

  1. Make a manual save. Use a clearly named slot so you can identify the pre-Shadowfell state later.
  2. Finish the side content you still want. Resolve tiefling, prisoner, rescue and other Act 2 objectives before entering. Do not assume they remain available after the transition.
  3. Visit camp. Speak with companions involved in those quests and confirm that their latest dialogue has occurred.
  4. Bring Shadowheart. Entering the Shadowfell without her can cause her to leave, cutting off the intended progression of her personal story.
  5. Carry the Spear of Night. Entering without it can prevent the intended progression of Shadowheart’s quest.
  6. Do not let Balthazar take the Nightsong. Allowing that outcome can make Shadowheart leave and radically change the story state.

The threshold matters because the game can resolve several world states at once. A quest that looked optional in the previous region may become unavailable, a companion may judge the party’s action immediately, and a rescue can become impossible. The checklist is therefore about timing, not about declaring one alignment choice universally good.

Why Shadowheart needs special preparation

Shadowheart’s path combines an item requirement, a companion-presence requirement and final choices that can permanently alter her status. Bring her to the Shadowfell sequence, keep the Spear of Night available and save before the Nightsong confrontation. If you are preserving her continued party involvement, do not treat the Nightsong as disposable quest loot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Later decisions can also make her leave permanently. The recorded triggers include offering her to Viconia after she rejects Shar, and killing her parents after rescuing them. Those are story decisions with substantial emotional consequences, not ordinary approval losses.

How do I save Wyll’s quest if I missed Mizora?

If Wyll’s story matters, resolve Mizora’s pod sequence in the Mind Flayer Colony before leaving the area. Leaving the pod unresolved can permanently lock Wyll’s companion quest for that run; failing to save Mizora, or killing her in the pod, is also recorded as a Wyll-loss trigger.

When you reach the colony, inspect its side chambers instead of following only the most obvious route. Make a save before interacting with the pod, then complete the sequence and check Wyll’s camp dialogue before moving on. If you have already left the colony with the pod unresolved, or killed Mizora there, the documented failure state is permanent in the current run. The reliable recovery is a save from before the colony sequence, not a later conversation.

In Act 3, Wyll’s resolved companion arc affects Karlach’s possible ending. If Wyll becomes the Blade of Avernus, he can be available to accompany Karlach to Avernus. That option depends on earlier quest resolution, so the Act 2 pod is not an isolated side scene.

What choices permanently lose companions in BG3?

These are the highest-cost companion triggers documented for a completion-oriented run. The exact dialogue path can vary with earlier choices and approval, so save before each personal-quest finale and bring the relevant companion with you.

Shadowheart

Shadowheart can leave if she is absent for the Shadowfell, if the party lacks the Spear of Night for the intended progression, or if Balthazar retrieves the Nightsong. Later, offering her to Viconia after she rejects Shar or killing her parents after rescuing them can also result in permanent departure. Her presence at the relevant location is not optional preparation; it is part of preserving the quest state.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Wyll

Protect the Mizora pod sequence in the Mind Flayer Colony. Leaving it unresolved, failing to save Mizora or killing her there can cost Wyll’s companion quest or his continued involvement. Because Wyll’s later Blade of Avernus status affects Karlach’s ending, losing the Act 2 sequence can remove options beyond Wyll’s own dialogue.

Karlach

Karlach’s early infernal-engine work should be completed before leaving the first major region. Her later arc can culminate in death or a return to Avernus. Those outcomes are tragic, but they are not automatically failed quests: they are narrative endpoints with different consequences. If Wyll’s arc has been resolved so that he is the Blade of Avernus, he may be able to accompany her.

Astarion

Bring Astarion to the Cazador confrontation. The companion reference records a high-cost outcome when Cazador is killed without Astarion under certain approval conditions. Save before the confrontation and avoid assuming that defeating the antagonist with the wrong party composition preserves Astarion’s personal quest.

Gale

Gale’s needs and later quest beats are time-sensitive enough that ignoring them can produce a high-cost result. Speak with him at camp, respond to his personal requests and save before major late-game decisions involving his power or transformation. The game’s own warnings matter more than trying to predict every hidden condition.

Lae’zel

Resolve Lae’zel’s crèche situation before advancing past the region. Leaving that storyline unfinished can damage her quest and remove later outcomes that depend on her involvement.

Halsin

Do not leave the Shadow-Cursed Lands until you have fully resolved Lift the Shadow Curse if you want Halsin’s related content. Leaving before the objective is complete can lock the quest and affect his continued availability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jaheira and Minsc

Protect Jaheira’s continued involvement before recruiting or protecting Minsc. If Jaheira leaves first, the conditions needed to recruit or safeguard Minsc can disappear. Save before the sequence that determines Jaheira’s status, then bring her into the relevant scenes.

Minthara

Do not dismiss Minthara after Ketheric’s defeat if you intend to keep her. Dismissing her at that stage is recorded as a companion-loss trigger, so use a manual save before making the decision.

How do I get the best companion endings in BG3?

There is no universal best ending. For a completion-oriented run, “best” means preserving the largest number of companion quests and leaving yourself the most ending options, then choosing among the surviving outcomes according to your character’s values.

Use this workflow for every personal quest:

  • Recruit the companion before advancing to the next major region.
  • Speak with them at camp after important discoveries and confrontations.
  • Bring them to the location named in their quest instead of assuming recruitment alone is enough.
  • Make a save before the final conversation, boss fight or sacrifice decision.
  • Read explicit warnings as mechanical signals, not atmospheric flavor.
  • Separate a tragic ending from a lockout: Karlach’s death or return to Avernus can be an intended conclusion, while losing a quest because an item or companion was absent is preventable.

Personal quests are not automatically protected by the main plot. The relevant companion often must be present, and camp dialogue can establish the state required for the next scene. A party that merely recruited everyone but never checks camp can still miss important branches.

Which point-of-no-return choices should make me stop and save?

Use a dedicated “threshold save” whenever the game visibly advances the story or warns that the world may change. The most important checkpoints are:

  • The decision to raid or defend the Emerald Grove.
  • Leaving the early region before Karlach’s infernal-engine work is resolved.
  • Advancing beyond the Rosymorn Monastery and crèche without resolving Lae’zel’s situation.
  • Entering the Shadowfell.
  • Leaving the Mind Flayer Colony before resolving Mizora’s pod.
  • Leaving the Shadow-Cursed Lands before completing Lift the Shadow Curse.
  • Any final companion confrontation involving Cazador, the Nightsong, Viconia, Gale or a character’s parents.
  • Late-game dialogue that explicitly warns of transformation, mind-flayer hunger or the end of the story.

Label saves by location and purpose, such as “Before Shadowfell—side quests complete” or “Before Mizora pod.” This is more useful than keeping many anonymous autosaves, especially when an autosave occurs after a companion has already left.

Can a bad decision cause an actual game over?

Yes. The game-over reference documents run-ending conditions after major Act 2 progression and certain late-game decisions involving Gale or mind-flayer hunger. The practical rule is simple: when the game says a choice may end the story, stop, save and consider whether you are intentionally accepting a game over rather than merely taking a dark narrative branch.

These warnings are separate from companion departures. A character leaving can still leave the campaign playable; a true game over cannot. In Honour Mode, the single-save structure means you must treat each warning as final unless you are willing to abandon that campaign.

What does Larian say about consequential choices?

Larian Studios describes Baldur’s Gate 3 in its official FAQ as “a story-rich, party-based RPG set in the universe of Dungeons & Dragons where your choices shape a tale of fellowship & betrayal, survival & sacrifice, and the lure of absolute power.” The wording explains why the game does not provide one protected route through every companion story.

A GDC narrative review similarly frames the characters around diametric choices with substantial consequences, using Gale, Wyll, Shadowheart and Karlach as examples. That structure means a completion checklist can reduce accidental lockouts, but it cannot remove the game’s intended tension. Preserving content and role-playing a character’s beliefs are different goals, and the game supports both.

What should I do on a second playthrough?

On a second run, deliberately choose a branch you avoided rather than trying to reproduce the completion route. The Grove raid, a different Shadowheart decision, a different Karlach conclusion or a different Wyll outcome can reveal content that a preservation-focused run intentionally leaves unseen.

If you want a physical keepsake after finishing the story, Larian’s official store describes Artwork from Baldur’s Gate 3 as a 192-page premium hardcover containing concept art, character designs and environmental illustrations. It is a companion art book, not a quest guide and not a way to undo a decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How was this checklist prioritized?

The priorities follow the cost of an error: true game over first, then permanent companion loss, permanent quest or faction lockout, tragic but playable endings and finally ordinary approval changes or failed checks. Within each act, the checklist emphasizes decisions that affect multiple companions or remove future quest inventory, especially the Emerald Grove, Shadowfell and Mizora’s pod.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I undo a companion departure in Honour Mode?

Honour Mode’s single-save structure removes the normal safety net of keeping several manual saves. If the departure has already been recorded, you generally need to continue with that altered party or start another campaign rather than reload an earlier branch.

Is losing approval the same as losing a companion?

No. A disapproval reaction usually changes approval or dialogue, while the triggers listed above can remove a character or lock a quest. Watch for explicit departure language, a missing companion at camp or a quest objective that disappears before treating a small reaction as permanent loss.

Can I recruit a companion after dismissing them?

Often, dismissing a companion at camp is an exchange rather than a permanent goodbye. Check the camp roster and the character’s location before concluding that a quest has failed; a departure caused by a specific story trigger is different from an ordinary party swap.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I keep separate saves for every companion quest?

Keep at least one clearly named save before each major threshold and before each personal-quest finale. Separate saves are especially valuable before the Grove decision, Shadowfell, the Mind Flayer Colony and any dialogue that displays an explicit warning.
