Baldur’s Gate 3: experiment and redirect
Larian’s feature description emphasizes exploration and experimentation: players can sneak, climb, jump, shove and interact with the environment, rather than relying on a single intended solution. Choices are designed to leave a mark on the world. That combination makes agency more than a dialogue-wheel question; it can affect how you approach an obstacle and what happens after you do.
That freedom has a trade-off. A player who wants a tightly directed sequence of set pieces may find a highly systemic RPG less controlled: there can be multiple approaches to a situation, and the party’s choices and reactions are part of the experience. If the pleasure of role-playing comes from trying an unexpected plan and seeing where it leads, this is a central reason to choose BG3.

Baldur’s Gate 3: plan the turn
BG3 combat uses team initiative, roll modifiers, and advantage and disadvantage. Those systems reward considering the whole party’s options before acting. Environmental interactions also matter: the same broad emphasis on experimentation that appears in exploration carries into battles. Difficulty options provide another way to shape the challenge.
This is not a reflex test in the same sense as an action combat system. A turn-based encounter gives you time to consider positioning, abilities and the likely consequences of a move. The cost is that players who want continuous action may find the pace stop-and-start, and the D&D-derived rules require some willingness to learn how actions and rolls work.
The Veilguard: react and combine abilities
The Veilguard uses real-time combat. Its official PlayStation description identifies three classes—Warrior, Mage and Rogue—and highlights weapon types, fast attacks, parries, dodges and abilities used during combat. A companion ability wheel lets you set up combos with party members.
That design is a better match for a player who wants to control movement and respond as a fight unfolds, rather than resolve each action through a turn-and-roll loop. The class and weapon structure still offers ways to customize play, but it is more concentrated than BG3’s extensive D&D-derived build system.
Which game has better companions and romance?

Those numbers describe the scope Larian advertises; they do not mean that every player will see or use every option, or that a larger count automatically makes a game better. Which RPG is easier to get into?
The Veilguard is likely the gentler fit if you want to start with real-time action rather than learn a D&D-style ruleset. BG3 is approachable for players who enjoy tactical turns and are willing to learn how initiative, rolls and modifiers shape combat.
“Easier” depends on what feels natural to you. The Veilguard asks you to engage with fast attacks, parries, dodges and ability combos; that can feel immediate, but it still asks for action-game timing. BG3 slows combat into turns, giving you time to think, but the decisions draw on a more elaborate rules framework. A player who dislikes reflex-based combat may find turn-based play more comfortable even if the rules take longer to learn.
For a first RPG, ask yourself whether you would rather learn a deep system at your own pace or begin with a more direct action loop. If what you want is turn-based party decisions shaped by rolls and D&D-style character options, BG3 aligns closely with that preference. What happens if you buy Baldur’s Gate 3 now?
Larian said on April 15, 2025, that Patch 8 was its final major game patch. The studio said that patch would add cross-play, Photo Mode and 12 subclasses; afterward, its stated support would be limited to minor bug fixing rather than new narrative content or major companion changes.
That matters if you are choosing based on the expectation of future story expansions or substantial companion additions: Larian’s announcement does not promise either. Its official feature page also advertises more than 174 hours of cinematics. Treat that as the studio’s scope figure, not a prediction of how much cinematic content any particular player will see.
