Use Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud for every supported game before modifying a Nintendo Switch 2. Open each important title’s Save Data Cloud screen, back up every relevant user, and verify that the completion or backup date is current. Then make a separate plan for titles that do not support ordinary cloud backup. A nearby-console transfer can move those saves without Nintendo Switch Online, but it deletes the source save rather than leaving a duplicate. Switch 2 saves cannot be copied to a microSD Express card, USB drive, or game card because they are stored in system memory.
If you are asking, “Will modifying my Switch 2 delete my saves?” the honest answer is that Nintendo does not publish a modification-specific recovery promise. Treat any modification, repair, initialization, or storage operation as a possible data-loss event and finish the official preparation while the console is still in its normal supported state.

The least destructive official method is Save Data Cloud. It keeps a server-side copy for supported software and does not require you to give up the save on the console. Because coverage is determined by each game, treat every title separately and record the games that display an unsupported-software message.
For an unsupported title, the only official alternative described here is a transfer to another nearby Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2. That operation is a move, not a backup: Nintendo deletes the save from the sending console after the transfer. Do not start it unless you intentionally want the second console to become the active location or you have accepted that risk.

Nintendo’s support material does not promise that an official backup or later restore will work after custom firmware, hardware modification, or another unauthorized change. Complete the cloud backup or transfer before changing the console, retain your Nintendo Account credentials, and keep access to any destination console.
A safe order is: update the console, inventory users and games, back up supported titles, isolate unsupported titles, verify the destination and account details, and only then begin a modification. Do not combine a backup attempt with formatting, user deletion, or an initialization step. Those actions can remove the local copy before you have confirmed that another copy exists.

Switch 2 save data is stored in the console’s system memory. It is not stored on the physical game card and is not placed on the microSD Express card used for downloaded software and other content.
- A game card is not a save backup. The save remains in system memory whether the game is card-based or downloaded.
- A microSD Express card cannot receive a copy of Switch 2 save data.
- External USB hard drives are not currently supported as Switch 2 save-data destinations.
MicroSD Express storage can still hold downloaded games, updates, downloadable content, screenshots, and videos. Those uses do not make the card a recovery copy for saved games. Copying a game installation, update, or screenshot folder therefore does not protect the progress associated with that game.
The same distinction matters when you remove a cartridge before service. Keeping the cartridge, buying a replacement cartridge, or reinstalling an eShop download does not recreate the save in system memory. The save belongs to the console user and title, not to the physical media.
How do I back up supported games with Save Data Cloud?
You need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and the game must support Save Data Cloud. Nintendo states that a membership is required to use the service; titles that show an unsupported-software message cannot use the ordinary cloud workflow.
- Connect the Switch 2 to the internet and install any available console update before beginning an official transfer or backup workflow.
- On the HOME Menu, highlight the game you need to protect.
- Press the + or – Button.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user whose save you want to protect.
- Select Back Up Save Data and wait for the operation to finish.
- Repeat the process for every important user and every supported game.
You can reach the same controls through System Settings > Data Management > Save Data Cloud. Select the user and title there, start the backup, and wait for the console’s completion state. Before modifying hardware, open the entry again and confirm that its backup date or completion information is current rather than assuming that an earlier upload succeeded.
Cloud coverage is title-dependent. A game can be installed and playable while still being excluded from Save Data Cloud, so do not infer coverage from the fact that another game backs up normally.
Back up every relevant user
Save data is associated with a user profile. If two people play the same title under different profiles, backing up one profile does not protect the other. Repeat the operation for each user who has meaningful progress. Check the displayed user name before pressing Back Up Save Data, especially on a family console where several profiles have similar names or icons.
How do I know the cloud backup completed?
Wait for the console to report completion, then reopen the title’s cloud entry and check the displayed backup date or completion information. A menu visit alone is not proof that an upload finished. If the date is old, run the backup again while the console has a stable internet connection. Keep a written list of titles, users, and the last confirmed date so an important game is not skipped.

What does Nintendo Switch Online actually cover?
The membership is a prerequisite for the Save Data Cloud service; it is not a guarantee that every game participates. A title may be excluded by its publisher or by Nintendo’s rules and can show an unsupported message even when the account has an active membership. Membership also does not turn an SD card, USB drive, or game card into a save destination.
What should I do when a game does not support cloud backup?
First, write down the title and user that report unsupported cloud backup. Then decide whether you have a second console and whether you can accept deleting the source save. There is no supported microSD, USB, or game-card workaround for making a direct Switch 2 save copy.
Nearby-console transfer
Nintendo’s nearby transfer works between Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch systems without Nintendo Switch Online. Both consoles need internet access, must be near each other, and the source and target users must be linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- On the sending console, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Send Save Data to Another Console.
- On the receiving console, open System Settings > Data Management > Transfer Your Save Data > Receive Save Data.
- Confirm the intended source user, target user, game, and any overwrite prompts.
- Keep both consoles powered and connected until the transfer reports completion.
The important limitation is explicit: Nintendo says the process does not create a copy. Once sent, the save-data file is deleted from the source system. Use it only when moving the active save to the destination console or when that destination is your deliberate pre-modification location. Do not describe it as an archival backup.
Before accepting the transfer, compare the account and profile shown on both screens. A nearby transfer is not a way to merge two users’ progress, and an overwrite prompt should be treated as a stop signal until you have confirmed which destination data will be replaced. If the target contains newer progress, resolve that situation before sending the source file.
What if I do not have a second console?
For an unsupported title, the official material supplied for this guide does not identify a second independent backup destination. Do not improvise by copying system-memory files to removable storage. Preserve the console as it is until you can use a supported title-specific or console-transfer workflow, and avoid promising that an unofficial tool will survive a modification.
If a second console becomes available later, update both systems first, connect them to the internet, sign in with the intended Nintendo Account, and read every deletion notice. The absence of Nintendo Switch Online removes the subscription requirement, not the source-deletion consequence.
How do Animal Crossing and other special-case games work?
Some games use their own recovery feature instead of ordinary Save Data Cloud. Nintendo specifically identifies Animal Crossing: New Horizons as using an island-backup feature. Follow that game’s island-backup or island-transfer instructions rather than expecting its save to appear in the standard cloud list.
Recommended Free Tools
An island is not simply another user save that can be duplicated through the ordinary menu. Confirm that the island-backup or transfer feature has completed and that you understand which Nintendo Account and destination console it is tied to. Finish that process before opening the console or changing its storage.
Apply the same rule to any title that displays an exception or unsupported message: check the game’s own documented process, note which Nintendo Account and console it applies to, and complete it before changing hardware. Never tell yourself that a general cloud membership automatically covers every game.

Pokémon and other titles
Do not assume that a particular series is covered or excluded without checking the individual title on the console. The decisive evidence is the Save Data Cloud screen or the game’s specific Nintendo support instructions, not whether the software is popular, downloaded, or played from a cartridge.
For a Pokémon game, check the exact title and user rather than relying on advice for another Pokémon release. If the title is unsupported, record that fact and follow any title-specific Nintendo procedure. If no supported procedure is available, understand that modifying the only console copy carries an unresolved loss risk.

Nearby save transfer moves a selected save between consoles and removes it from the sender. Switch-to-Switch 2 system transfer is a broader migration from an original Nintendo Switch to a Switch 2, with separate local and server options and different consequences for the original system.
| Route | Nintendo Switch Online required | Second console required | Does the source remain intact? | Best use before modification | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Save Data Cloud | Yes | No | Yes, on the console after backup | Primary backup for supported games | Unsupported titles cannot use it; post-modification restoration is not guaranteed |
| Nearby-console save transfer | No | Yes | No; Nintendo deletes the sent save | Move an unsupported save to a controlled destination | It is not a duplicate and can overwrite the intended destination |
| Switch-to-Switch 2 local system transfer | Not stated as a prerequisite | Yes | Depends on user and title conditions; some saves are deleted from the original | Migration when retaining both systems and following Nintendo’s transfer flow | Unlinked-user and cloud-unsupported saves are deleted from the original after transfer |
| Switch-to-Switch 2 server transfer | Not stated as a prerequisite | No simultaneous destination required | No; the original console is initialized | Migration when the original console will be sold or traded in | Uploaded data is retained for up to one year, and the original is initialized |
The table describes migration consequences, not a promise that any route will restore a modified console. Follow the exact prompts shown by Nintendo for the accounts and titles involved.
In practical terms, cloud backup is the only option in this comparison that both avoids a second console and leaves the local save in place. Nearby transfer is useful when a subscription is unavailable, but it should be scheduled like a one-way move. System transfer belongs to a change of primary console, not to routine experimentation with modified hardware.
How does Switch-to-Switch 2 local transfer affect the original console?
Nintendo distinguishes local communication from server transfer. In local transfer, cloud-supported saves for linked users remain on the original Switch while being copied to Switch 2. Saves for unlinked users and games that do not support Save Data Cloud are deleted from the original console after the transfer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That makes local system transfer unsuitable as a casual precaution if you intend to keep the old console as a fallback. Read the deletion notices, verify which users are linked, and decide whether the Switch 2 destination is ready to hold the only remaining copy of an affected save.
“Local” does not mean “risk-free.” It describes how the two systems communicate. It does not change the account-link requirement or protect saves that Nintendo says will be deleted from the original. Make an inventory before starting and do not assume that every profile on the old console is linked in the same way.
When should I use server transfer?
Server transfer is intended for a migration in which you will not retain the original Switch, such as selling or trading it in. The original console uploads its data and is then initialized. Nintendo says the uploaded data remains on the server for up to one year; the setup process shows a download deadline, which can also be viewed later in Nintendo Account settings.
Do not treat that retention period as a permanent archive or as a general-purpose pre-modification backup. It is a time-limited migration path with an initialization consequence. Confirm that you can access the destination account and complete the download before the displayed deadline.

Because initialization follows the upload, server transfer should never be started merely to test whether a backup works. Read the deadline, record it, and make sure the receiving Switch 2 is ready before you surrender the original system. If you continue to use the old console, local transfer may be the more appropriate migration mode, subject to its deletion rules.
Can modifying a Switch 2 delete my saves?
Modification can expose the console to data loss, and Nintendo’s reviewed support material does not define a modification-specific backup or restore procedure. Nintendo’s repair guidance also warns that repair may delete stored data or make it unreadable, which is why data should be backed up before service.
Use the official backup or transfer route before modification, but do not promise yourself that a cloud save, transfer, or later restore will definitely work after unauthorized changes. Keep account sign-in information, identify the correct user profiles, and avoid deleting users, formatting storage, or initializing the console until every consequence is understood.
Do not rely on a claim that a modification will leave user data untouched. Even if a particular procedure appears successful, Nintendo’s support pages do not establish that cloud restoration, account recognition, or transfer will behave normally afterward. The prudent point to complete preparation is before the console is altered.

What should I check immediately before changing the console?
Use this checklist in order. It separates reversible preparation from operations that can remove the only local copy.
- Update the console before beginning an official transfer workflow.
- For every important supported game, open Save Data Cloud, select each relevant user, back up the save, and verify the completion state or date.
- Record every game that reports unsupported cloud backup, including the affected user.
- For an unsupported title, arrange a nearby-console transfer only if you understand that the source save will be deleted.
- On both consoles, confirm the Nintendo Account, user profile, game, destination, and overwrite prompts before accepting a transfer.
- Do not format the console, delete a user, initialize the system, or begin server transfer until you have read the deletion consequences.
- If you are using a special title-specific feature, complete and verify that feature separately from ordinary Save Data Cloud.
- Keep Nintendo Account credentials and access to the destination console available for any later download or recovery step.
- Keep both consoles connected to power and internet during a transfer, and do not interrupt the process when a completion screen has not appeared.
- Write down the last confirmed cloud date, the destination console, and any server-transfer download deadline.
After the checklist is complete, stop and reassess any title that still has only one local copy. It is better to postpone a modification than to turn an unresolved unsupported-save limitation into an irreversible deletion.
Which backup route should you choose?
Choose Save Data Cloud whenever the title supports it; it is the only route here that leaves the source save in place while creating a separate server-side copy. If a title is unsupported and you have another console, nearby transfer is the no-subscription option, but it should be treated as a controlled move with a deletion warning. Use Switch-to-Switch 2 system transfer only for an actual console migration, selecting local or server mode after understanding which data will be removed and whether the original system will be initialized.
There is no honest reason to buy a microSD Express card, generic SD card, USB drive, or extra game card solely to back up Switch 2 saves. Those products may be useful for software or media storage, but Nintendo does not support them as direct save-data destinations. The optional hardware that can matter is a second compatible console, and even that is expensive and does not create a duplicate when you use nearby save transfer.
If you are deciding whether Nintendo Switch Online is worthwhile for this task, its relevance is specific: it is the stated prerequisite for Save Data Cloud. Check the individual title first, then subscribe or renew only with the understanding that unsupported games still need a separate plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to back up every Switch 2 game?
You need Nintendo Switch Online for Save Data Cloud, but membership does not make every title eligible. A game can remain unsupported, in which case you must follow its own documented backup feature or consider a nearby-console move.

Can I keep two copies by transferring a save to another Switch?
No. Nintendo’s nearby-console save transfer deletes the file from the sending system after it is sent. It creates a destination copy only in the sense that the save now exists on the receiving console, not as a retained duplicate on both systems.
What happens to my old Switch after server transfer?
The original Switch is initialized after its data is uploaded. Nintendo says the server copy is retained for up to one year, with a download deadline shown during setup and later in Nintendo Account settings.

Is a game cartridge a safe place to keep my save?
No. Switch 2 saves stay in system memory regardless of whether the software is on a cartridge or downloaded. Removing or preserving the cartridge does not preserve the save.
Can I copy Switch 2 saves to a microSD Express card?
No. Nintendo stores Switch 2 save data in system memory and does not support copying it to a microSD Express card. The card is for software and media such as downloads, updates, DLC, screenshots, and videos.
Can a USB hard drive back up Switch 2 saves?
No. External USB hard drives are not currently supported as Switch 2 save-data destinations, so connecting one does not create an official recovery copy.
How do I back up Pokémon save data before changing the console?
Check the exact Pokémon title and user in Save Data Cloud. If the title is supported, complete and verify the cloud backup. If it shows an unsupported message, follow any title-specific Nintendo instructions or understand that a nearby-console transfer moves and deletes the source save.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses an island-backup or island-transfer feature rather than ordinary Save Data Cloud. Follow Nintendo’s instructions for that feature, verify the destination and account, and complete it before modifying the console.
Does nearby-console transfer require Nintendo Switch Online?
No. Nintendo says nearby save transfer does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but both consoles need internet access, must be near each other, and the source and target users must be linked to the same Nintendo Account.
Will cloud restore definitely work after custom firmware or another modification?
Nintendo does not publish a modification-specific guarantee. Complete the official backup before changing the console, but do not promise that restoration, account recognition, or transfer will work normally afterward.
What if I have no second console and my game is unsupported?
The official options described here do not provide a separate removable-storage destination for that save. Do not improvise with an SD card, USB drive, or game card; postpone the modification or follow a documented title-specific workflow if one exists.
The Bottom Line
Back up every supported title with Nintendo Switch Online Save Data Cloud and verify the date before modifying a Switch 2. For unsupported games, use a documented title-specific feature or a nearby-console transfer only if you accept that Nintendo deletes the source save. SD cards, USB drives, and game cards are not save backups, and no official document guarantees recovery after an unauthorized modification.
