AWS Student Rewards gives verified higher-education students a practical starting package: 12 months of AWS Skill Builder Premium, promotional AWS Credits, and—after earning enough Builder Center badges—a $100 AWS Foundational Certification exam voucher. It is not a cash grant or an automatic certification. The strongest result comes from combining the benefits with hands-on labs, two or three documented projects, and deliberate exam preparation.
You must be at least 18, enrolled at an accredited higher-education institution, verified through SheerID, and have a completed AWS Builder Center profile. This guide explains the enrollment steps, reward thresholds, learning-route choices, project plan, cost controls, and common mistakes that can waste the benefits.

AWS Student Rewards is a benefit program inside AWS Builder Center for verified students in higher education. AWS describes it as access to AWS Credits, a year of premium Skill Builder learning, and an AWS Certification Foundational exam voucher earned through learning and community participation (AWS launch announcement, 2026).
Eligibility is limited to students aged 18 or older who attend an accredited higher-education institution, subject to the applicable program terms. Verification is handled through SheerID. You also need an AWS Builder ID and a finished Builder Center profile; simply having a university email address does not, by itself, activate every reward.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The program is best understood as a progression rather than a single coupon. Your verified status and completed profile unlock the learning subscription first. Builder Center badges then add credits and eventually an exam voucher.
How do I get AWS Student Rewards?
Complete the account, verification, and profile steps in this order. The labels can change as AWS updates Builder Center, so follow the prompts shown in your account.
- Create or sign in to an AWS Builder ID. Use an email address you can keep access to during your studies and certification preparation.
- Open AWS Builder Center and start student verification. Submit the requested institution and enrollment information through SheerID. Use your legal details and current enrollment information so the verification record matches your school.
- Wait for the verification result. If the automated check cannot confirm your status, review the information you entered and follow the support or additional-document instructions presented by the verification flow.
- Complete your Builder Center profile. A verified account without a finished profile may not provision the profile reward. Add the requested education and professional-interest details, then save the profile.
- Confirm Skill Builder access. After provisioning, open AWS Skill Builder and check that the Premium entitlement is active. Record the start date because the entitlement lasts 12 months.
- Open the rewards or badge view in Builder Center. This is where you can see the current badge definitions, progress toward each threshold, and any available claim action.
- Claim each unlocked benefit when prompted. Keep confirmation messages and note credit issue dates, because promotional credits have an expiration period under the applicable terms.
If the Premium entitlement does not appear after your profile is complete, do not create a second student account immediately. Check that you are signed into the same Builder ID used for verification, refresh the entitlement page, and use the support path shown in Builder Center.
How many badges do I need for AWS Credits and the exam voucher?
The reward ladder uses Builder Center badges, not badges from an unrelated learning platform. The thresholds and published values reported by AWS for 2026 are:
| Milestone | Benefit | What it means | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verified student plus completed profile | 12 months of AWS Skill Builder Premium | Access to 900+ courses, hands-on labs, certification preparation, and game-based learning | AWS published a $449 value for the 12-month Premium period in 2026 |
| 7 Builder Center badges | $10 in AWS Credits | Promotional balance for eligible AWS services | Not withdrawable cash; terms and eligible services apply |
| 14 Builder Center badges | Additional $20 in AWS Credits | Raises the cumulative credit award to $30 | The second amount is additional, not a replacement for the first |
| 21 Builder Center badges | $100 AWS Foundational Certification exam voucher | Reduces the price of the applicable foundational certification exam | It is not cash and does not grant certification; verify current voucher terms before booking |
| All listed milestones | Potential package value of $579 | Published-value calculation combining Premium, credits, and voucher | AWS’s 2026 figure is a potential value, not money paid to the student |
AWS says the credits appear in the Billing Console and apply only to eligible AWS services. The Builder Center FAQ states that they are valid for at least 12 months from issue under the applicable customer and Builder terms. Check the exact expiry date and eligible-service rules shown for your account instead of assuming every AWS charge will be covered.
The voucher is an exam-payment benefit. You still have to select the applicable foundational exam, schedule it through the certification process, satisfy any current eligibility rules, and pass the exam yourself. A voucher can expire or have booking restrictions, so read the terms at the moment it is issued.

What does the 12-month Skill Builder Premium reward include?
The Premium entitlement is the program’s first major benefit: a full year of structured learning rather than a collection of disconnected videos. AWS describes the catalog as containing more than 900 courses, hands-on labs, certification preparation, and game-based learning (AWS, 2026).
Use a fundamentals sequence before specializing
Start with the concepts that appear in almost every cloud role: compute, storage, databases, networking, identity and access management, security, monitoring, and pricing. Keep a short glossary and draw a simple architecture diagram for each service family. This prevents the common mistake of memorizing service names without understanding how they fit together.
Turn each lesson into an action
After a conceptual lesson, use a guided lab when one is available. Record the objective, the commands or console actions you performed, the expected result, and the cleanup step. That four-part note becomes troubleshooting evidence you can reuse in a portfolio or interview.
Reserve time for certification preparation
Do not spend all 12 months browsing courses. Once the fundamentals are familiar, choose the foundational certification track you intend to take, complete its preparation content, and use practice assessments to identify weak domains. Leave a final study block for review rather than trying to learn new services the night before the exam.

How do Builder Center badges work?
Badges are earned through legitimate participation in Builder Center, with activities such as publishing, commenting, and sustained engagement. The exact badge definitions and qualifying actions can change, so the badge page in your account is the authority for current requirements.
Build a sustainable participation routine
- Publish useful notes from a lab, a design decision, or a resolved error instead of posting empty updates.
- Comment when you can add a technical clarification, a test result, or a thoughtful question.
- Return regularly and keep your profile activity authentic; a burst of low-value posts may not satisfy sustained-engagement rules.
- Capture screenshots or links to your own work so you can prove what you completed if a badge is delayed.
Check progress before assuming a threshold was met
Badge counts can depend on the activity type, timing, and the definition currently displayed in Builder Center. Look for the badge’s completion status rather than counting your own posts. If a qualifying action is missing, check whether it was published under the verified account and whether the activity meets the current definition.

How should I use the AWS Credits without creating an unexpected bill?
Treat the credits as a controlled lab budget, not as permission to leave resources running. They are promotional credits for eligible AWS services, visible in the Billing Console, and valid for at least 12 months from issue under the applicable terms.
Set a project budget before launching anything
Write down the experiment, the services it needs, the expected run time, and the shutdown condition. Prefer small datasets, short test windows, and architectures that can be deleted cleanly. Keep a separate record of which resources belong to each project.
Monitor usage during the lab
Check the Billing Console after creating resources and again when the experiment ends. Look for charges that are not eligible for credits, resources in a different region, and services that continue running after you close a browser tab. Delete or stop what you no longer need.
Use the expiry date as a planning constraint
Because the validity period is measured from the issue date, do not wait until the end of the academic year to begin. Schedule the most useful experiments early enough to leave time for troubleshooting and a second iteration.
Can I learn AWS if my college does not offer AWS Academy?
Yes. AWS Academy is institution-led, but AWS Educate provides a self-paced route for beginners when a college does not offer Academy. Student Rewards adds a third route for verified higher-education students by bundling Premium learning, credits, and a possible voucher.
| Route | Institutional enrollment required? | Hands-on practice | Certification preparation | Credits or account benefit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Student Rewards through Builder Center | Yes: you must be an eligible, verified higher-education student | Skill Builder labs; you may also use other lab environments available to you | Included in Skill Builder Premium; a foundational exam voucher is available at 21 badges | Credits at badge milestones and a possible exam voucher |
| AWS Academy | Usually yes: a participating college or instructor leads the course | Learner Labs can support educator-designed assignments and more than 100 AWS services | AWS lists foundational, associate, data, and machine-learning curricula | The route is primarily structured education and lab access; a Student Rewards credit award is not implied |
| AWS Educate | No institutional AWS Academy course is required | Self-paced hands-on learning is available | Useful preparation content, but the Student Rewards voucher is not part of Educate by itself | AWS says beginners can start free without requiring an Amazon account to begin; this is training access, not the Builder Center credit ladder |
If your institution offers Academy, its instructor-led structure can add deadlines, feedback, and assignments. If it does not, begin with Educate or Student Rewards immediately rather than waiting for a campus program. You can use more than one route, but keep one learning plan so the same fundamentals are not repeated without producing projects.

What should I do during my first year?
A 12-month schedule works best when each phase produces an observable result. Adjust the pace around your academic calendar, but keep the order: access, fundamentals, practice, projects, badges, and certification.
Months 1–2: activate access and learn the vocabulary
- Complete Builder Center verification and profile setup.
- Confirm the Premium start date and bookmark the billing and badge views.
- Study compute, storage, networking, identity, security, monitoring, and pricing.
- Finish at least one guided lab and write a short troubleshooting note.
Months 3–5: build small, controlled experiments
- Create a simple project that uses a small number of services and has a clear teardown process.
- Repeat the build after changing one design choice, such as the data store or access policy.
- Publish useful Builder Center reflections and check which activities count toward current badges.
- Review billing after every experiment and document the cleanup steps.
Months 6–8: complete a portfolio-quality project
- Choose a project with a user or operational goal rather than a collection of disconnected services.
- Document the architecture, data flow, identity boundaries, failure cases, and cost controls.
- Include screenshots, a short setup guide, and a section explaining what you would improve.
- Continue qualifying Builder Center participation until the 14-badge credit milestone is reached, if that is your goal.
Months 9–10: target the foundational exam
- Map the exam domains to your Skill Builder preparation material.
- Use practice assessments to find gaps, then return to the relevant lessons and labs.
- At 21 badges, claim the voucher and read its current expiration, scheduling, and exam restrictions.
- Book the exam only when your practice performance is stable across all domains.
Months 11–12: package evidence for applications
- Polish two or three projects rather than adding a fourth unfinished one.
- Add troubleshooting notes that show how you diagnosed a problem, not only the final diagram.
- Explain where you controlled cost, restricted access, monitored behavior, and cleaned up resources.
- List the certification only after you pass; until then, describe the exam as scheduled or in preparation.
Which projects demonstrate useful cloud skill?
Choose projects that make your decisions visible. A small, well-documented system is more persuasive than a large diagram with no explanation.
Static site with a deployment workflow
Use it to demonstrate storage, delivery, access permissions, versioned content, and a repeatable deployment process. Explain how you prevent public exposure of unrelated resources and how you remove test assets.
Serverless data collection service
Design a narrow API or form workflow that stores a small amount of data. Document validation, identity boundaries, error handling, monitoring signals, and the conditions under which the service should be disabled.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsScheduled data-processing experiment
Start with a tiny input file and show how a scheduled job transforms it and records failures. The important evidence is your reasoning about retries, permissions, logging, and cost—not the size of the dataset.
For every project, publish a one-page README containing the goal, architecture diagram, services used, setup sequence, expected output, known limitations, approximate usage assumptions, and teardown instructions. Never publish credentials, access keys, or personal student records.

How should I prepare for the $100 foundational exam voucher?
Earn the voucher before you need it, then verify its terms before scheduling. The voucher reduces the cost of an applicable AWS Foundational Certification exam; it is not a cash payment, a training subscription, or proof that you already hold the certification.
- Confirm that the voucher appears in the same Builder Center account that earned the 21st badge.
- Read the current voucher conditions, expiration date, eligible exam, and booking instructions.
- Study the exam domains with Skill Builder courses, labs, and practice assessments.
- Use your project notes to close gaps in identity, networking, security, monitoring, and pricing concepts.
- Schedule only after you can explain why a service fits a scenario, what it costs conceptually, and how to troubleshoot a basic failure.
- Save the result. If you pass, update your résumé and portfolio accurately; if you do not, use the score report and troubleshooting notes to plan the next attempt.
What mistakes most often reduce the value of Student Rewards?
- Stopping after verification: Student verification alone is not the same as completing the profile. Finish the profile and confirm the Premium entitlement.
- Confusing badges with course completions: The reward thresholds use Builder Center badges. Check the current badge definitions rather than assuming every Skill Builder completion counts.
- Thinking credits are cash: Promotional credits cannot be withdrawn. They apply to eligible services under the terms shown in your account.
- Ignoring expiration: Record each credit issue date and the voucher deadline. Plan projects and exam preparation before those dates.
- Leaving resources running: A lab can continue generating charges after you stop actively using it. Check the Billing Console and delete or stop test resources.
- Posting low-value activity: Badge progress depends on qualifying participation, not a guaranteed number of arbitrary posts. Publish work that another learner can use.
- Relying on the certificate alone: A foundational credential signals baseline knowledge. Projects, architecture decisions, and troubleshooting evidence show that you can apply it.
- Using an institution-only route when it is unavailable: Academy depends on a participating college or instructor. Use Student Rewards or Educate instead of waiting for a campus offering.
Is AWS Student Rewards worth pursuing for a cloud career?
For an eligible student who will actually practice, the program is unusually useful because it joins structured learning, lab access, a limited cloud budget, community participation, and an exam incentive. AWS says the broader initiative represents a commitment of more than $500 million to student cloud and AI training resources, and Student Builder Groups are available in more than 60 countries (AWS, 2026). Those figures indicate scale, but they do not replace your own project evidence.

If you want a cloud-career starting point, use the benefits as deadlines that force a sequence of learning, building, and demonstrating skills.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use AWS Student Rewards credits to pay for the certification exam?
No. The credits are promotional account credits for eligible AWS services. The exam benefit is a separate voucher unlocked at the applicable badge milestone, with its own expiration and booking conditions.
What happens if my school is not recognized during SheerID verification?
Check that the institution name and enrollment details match your official records and follow any additional verification instructions shown in the flow. If the school still cannot be confirmed, use the Builder Center support route and ask whether your institution meets the current accreditation and eligibility terms.
Can I keep the Premium learning access after the 12-month period ends?
The Student Rewards entitlement itself is for 12 months. Any continuation after that period depends on the Skill Builder offering and terms available at that time, so review the account page before the end date rather than assuming renewal.
Do I need AWS Academy before I can claim Student Rewards?
No. Academy is a separate, school-led learning route. Student Rewards uses Builder Center verification, while AWS Educate is another self-paced option for beginners whose institution does not provide Academy.
