For a Windows PC, Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free are effectively tied in the strongest 2026 independent tests. AV-TEST gave both products perfect 6/6 scores for protection, performance, and usability in its August 2026 Windows round, while AV-Comparatives placed Avast and AVG together at a 99.3% protection rate in its February–May 2026 real-world test. Those results do not establish a universal winner. Your better choice depends on the interface you prefer, the upgrade prompts you tolerate, the privacy notice and controls that fit your region, and how each app behaves on your own hardware.
Which free antivirus wins: Avast or AVG?
There is no evidence-based reason to declare one the overall winner for Windows in 2026. The latest comparable lab results are a tie, and both brands are closely related: Avast acquired AVG in 2016, AVG uses the Avast engine according to AV-Comparatives, and both have been owned by Gen Digital since November 2022.

How do Avast and AVG compare in independent antivirus tests?
Two independent testing programs put the products in the same top tier, but they measure different things. AV-TEST reports category scores on a six-point scale; AV-Comparatives uses real-world attack paths and a statistical model that accounts for false positives.

AV-TEST Windows results from August 2026
AV-TEST tested the specified Windows builds and awarded both free editions a perfect score in every category. The product versions matter: Avast was listed as Free Antivirus 26.6, while AVG was listed as Antivirus Free 26.6 and 26.7.
| Product | Protection | Performance | Usability | Test date and scope |

| Avast Free Antivirus 26.6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | AV-TEST Windows test, August 2026 |
| AVG Antivirus Free 26.6 & 26.7 | 6/6 | 6/6 | 6/6 | AV-TEST Windows test, August 2026 |
AV-TEST’s result means each product met that lab’s requirements in that test round. It is not a guarantee that every future build will score identically or that two PCs will feel exactly the same. AV-Comparatives tested versions 26.1–26.4 against 400 real-world cases. Avast, AVG, and Norton were reported together at a 99.3% protection rate. The report explains that its percentage calculation gives user-dependent outcomes half weight; products in the same results cluster are treated as equally effective when false-positive rates stay below the lab’s threshold.
A 99.3% figure is therefore a result for that test design and period, not a promise that an individual user will block 99.3% of all malware. Read the full AV-Comparatives Real-World Protection Test report for the attack paths, methodology, and version scope.
Why are Avast and AVG so similar?
The products share corporate and technical history, which makes overlapping test results unsurprising. Similar detection technology does not remove every difference in design or policy.
Ownership timeline
- Avast acquired AVG in October 2016.
- Gen Digital has owned both brands since November 2022.
- AV-Comparatives says AVG uses the Avast engine.
These facts explain why a threat-detection comparison can produce nearly identical outcomes. They do not establish that every screen, optional module, notification, privacy setting, or licensing condition is shared. AV-Comparatives’ Avast profile provides the ownership and engine context.

What protection and features do the free editions provide?
The free downloads are intended to provide core anti-malware protection, but the public evidence does not establish complete feature parity or a definitive, current module-by-module inventory. Use the dated observations below as guidance rather than assuming that a feature present in one interface must appear in the other.
What the 2025 independent user-experience review observed
AV-Comparatives’ 2025 consumer review found that both free applications prompt users to upgrade to premium products. It also described AVG’s free product as having real-time anti-malware capabilities and a specialized ransomware shield. The review is a 2025 observation, so menus and behavior may change in later builds; it should not be generalized into a claim that every current installation behaves identically.
The review does not support a claim that Avast has exactly the same ransomware controls, nor does it establish how often either product displays a prompt. If a specific protection module is important to you, verify its presence in the installer and current application settings instead of relying on the brand name. The source is the AV-Comparatives Consumer Summary Report 2025.
Core protection versus paid additions
Both vendors use their free editions to introduce optional premium products. Paid products such as Avast Premium Security or AVG Internet Security are separate choices for people who need capabilities beyond the free tier. The available modules, regional terms, and pricing can change, so do not treat a premium feature as included with the no-cost download unless the current app explicitly shows it as enabled.

Will Avast or AVG slow down your Windows PC?
The available evidence cannot support calling one product universally lighter. AV-Comparatives’ April 2026 performance test used both 26.3 editions on an up-to-date 64-bit Windows 11 system, and the lab cautions that its findings apply to the tested versions and hardware/software context.
That limitation matters because startup time, file-scanning impact, storage speed, processor load, and other background software vary widely between PCs. The report indicates the likely impact in its test environment; it does not guarantee the same experience on an older laptop, a gaming desktop, or a machine with unusual workloads. Consult the April 2026 Consumer Performance Test for the exact scope.
A practical way to assess performance on your own PC
- Record a baseline: note boot time, available memory, and how long a typical large folder takes to open before installing a new antivirus.
- Install only one real-time antivirus at a time. Running two real-time engines can create conflicts and does not create a simple additive protection benefit.
- After installation and initial updates, repeat the same everyday tasks and observe startup, application launches, file copies, and fan activity.
- Check whether the application is performing an initial scan or update before judging its normal idle behavior.
- If the result is unacceptable, use the vendor’s normal uninstall process, restart Windows, and confirm that Windows Security reports an active protection provider before trying the other product.
This procedure is a personal check, not a laboratory benchmark. Keep the test conditions consistent and avoid presenting your observation as evidence that all users will see the same result.
Are Avast and AVG’s upgrade prompts the same?
AV-Comparatives’ 2025 user-experience review found upgrade prompts in both free applications. It did not establish that the prompts appear at the same frequency, use the same wording, or offer the same controls, so a tie on protection should not be interpreted as a tie on advertising experience.
During setup and normal use, read each screen rather than accepting every recommended option automatically. Pay attention to switches that enable trials, install optional components, change the default browser or search settings, or send diagnostic information. If you want a quiet, no-cost installation, record which notifications you see and whether the app lets you disable them; those observations are build- and region-dependent.
What privacy and telemetry differences should you check?
Avast and AVG maintain separate product privacy notices, each with a 2026 update date. Do not assume that a consent choice made in one application governs the other.
AV-Comparatives reported in its 2025 review that Avast collected user data through third-party analysis services by default for in-house purposes such as product improvement. That observation comes from the review period and does not by itself describe every current setting or every country. Before installation, read the current Avast Product Privacy Notice and AVG Product Privacy Notice; after installation, inspect the application’s privacy, data-sharing, and product-improvement controls.
A privacy comparison checklist
- Identify which company’s notice applies to the exact product and region you selected.
- Check whether analytics or product-improvement sharing is enabled by default.
- Look for separate controls for security telemetry, marketing communications, and personalized offers.
- Review the retention, deletion, and rights language in the notice rather than relying on a short setup summary.
- Revisit the controls after a major update, because labels and defaults can change.
Which platforms do Avast and AVG support?
The strongest head-to-head evidence in this comparison is for Windows. AV-Comparatives lists Avast home products across Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS, while it lists AVG home products for Windows, Mac, and Android. That inventory does not mean that every edition has the same features or that the Windows scores transfer to another operating system.

How should you choose between Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free?
Use the tie in protection results to remove fear of choosing the “wrong” brand, then decide on practical fit. The following framework keeps each preference tied to evidence rather than inventing a universal ranking.
Choose the product whose interface you understand faster
Open the current free installers or screenshots from the vendor and examine the main status screen, scan controls, notification settings, and upgrade messages. Clear labeling matters because an antivirus is useful only when you can tell whether protection is active and how to respond to an alert. Interface preference is personal; the lab scores cannot measure it for you.
Choose based on your tolerance for upgrade messaging
Both free products displayed premium-upgrade prompts in the 2025 independent review. If prompts are a major annoyance, install one product, note the messages you receive during ordinary use, and compare that experience with the other only after completely removing the first. The review does not prove identical prompt frequency, so your own observation is relevant.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose based on privacy controls you can accept
Read the separate notices and inspect the data-sharing switches in the app you plan to keep. Avast’s 2025 review observation about third-party analysis services makes this check especially important for privacy-sensitive users, but AVG should receive the same scrutiny because it has its own notice and controls.
Choose based on your own workload, not a “lightest antivirus” claim
The April 2026 performance report tested specific 26.3 builds on a current Windows 11 64-bit system. If your computer differs substantially, use the repeatable local procedure above and keep the result specific to your hardware and workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do you install and evaluate one safely?
A clean, controlled comparison prevents leftover components and overlapping real-time engines from confusing the result.
- Prepare Windows. Install pending Windows updates, save open work, and make sure you have an administrator account. If another third-party antivirus is active, plan to remove it before enabling a replacement.
- Use the vendor’s official download. Avoid repackaged installers and read every setup screen. Confirm that the product name and free edition match what you intended to install.
- Review optional choices. Decline paid trials or extra components you do not want, and read privacy and data-sharing prompts before accepting them.
- Update before scanning. Let the application retrieve current program and malware definitions, then restart if Windows or the installer requests it.
- Run an initial scan. Allow the first scan to finish while the PC is idle. Its duration may not represent normal day-to-day performance because it is examining existing files for the first time.
- Verify active protection. Check the antivirus status screen and Windows Security’s provider information. Do not leave two products’ real-time protection enabled simultaneously.
- Evaluate ordinary use. Test your normal applications for a day or two, note notifications and resource behavior, and record the product version so your conclusion remains tied to that build.
- Switch cleanly if needed. Uninstall the first product using Windows’ installed-app controls or the vendor’s removal utility, restart, verify protection status, and then install the alternative.
What are the main limitations of the 2026 comparison?
- Test snapshots age. August 2026 AV-TEST scores describe the listed builds, not every later update.
- Windows is the evidence center. The cited head-to-head scores do not establish equivalent results on Mac, Android, or iOS.
- Different labs use different methods. A six-point AV-TEST category score and AV-Comparatives’ real-world percentage are not interchangeable measurements.
- A group result is not a guarantee. The 99.3% rate covers 400 cases in one February–May period and should not be read as the probability of protection for your future threats.
- Free-tier behavior can change. Prompts, optional modules, privacy controls, and availability may differ by build and region.
- Performance is system-dependent. The April test’s Windows 11 hardware and software context may differ from your PC.
What is the final verdict for Windows users?
Avast Free Antivirus and AVG Antivirus Free are a draw on the best current independent Windows evidence. Both earned 6/6 protection, performance, and usability scores in AV-TEST’s August 2026 round, and both sat in AV-Comparatives’ 99.3% protection group for the February–May 2026 real-world test.
Pick the one whose current interface, privacy settings, and upgrade behavior suit you, then verify its impact on your own machine. If you need capabilities reserved for paid editions, evaluate the optional premium products separately rather than assuming the free versions include them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is AVG actually the same antivirus as Avast?
They are separate consumer products under the same corporate ownership, and AV-Comparatives reports that AVG uses the Avast engine. Shared engine technology explains similar detection results, but it does not prove identical interfaces, settings, or privacy terms.
Do the 2026 scores apply to Avast and AVG on Mac or Android?
No. The cited perfect scores and 99.3% real-world result are Windows-focused tests of specified versions. Other operating systems require their own current tests and feature checks.
Can I keep Avast and AVG installed together for extra protection?
Running two real-time antivirus engines together can cause conflicts and confusing alerts. Use one active real-time product, and remove the first cleanly before enabling the second.
Should I pay for Avast Premium Security or AVG Internet Security?
Only if you need capabilities that your chosen free edition does not provide. Treat those products as optional paid tiers, and verify the current feature list, regional availability, and terms in the app before purchasing.
