The ASUS TUF Gaming VG34VQL3A is a strong conventional VA ultrawide when discounted to roughly $300–$350, especially for immersive PC gaming. Its 34-inch 3440×1440 panel combines high contrast, a 1500R curve, Adaptive-Sync, a height-adjustable stand, and a USB hub. However, it is not a premium HDR monitor, its advertised 1ms response time is not an independent measurement, and the 180Hz specification varies by market: ASUS lists 180Hz for the US model, while some regional pages identify it as an overclocked mode.
ASUS TUF Gaming VG34VQL3A specifications
The VG34VQL3A is a 34-inch, 21:9 gaming monitor with a 3440×1440 UWQHD resolution. That is substantially wider than standard 2560×1440 QHD and requires more graphics-processing power. The curved VA/TFT LCD panel is aimed at immersive gaming rather than competitive esports above all else.

The 1500R curve is more pronounced than the 1800R curve found on many ultrawides. It suits games, films and wide desktop layouts, although users working with CAD drawings, spreadsheets or precise flat geometry may prefer a flat display.

The stand provides tilt, swivel and up to 130mm of height adjustment. The monitor is approximately 808mm wide without its stand and weighs 8.1kg with the stand, so check both desk depth and monitor-arm capacity before buying. The manual supports 100×100mm VESA mounting but warns that pivoting is intended for packaging rather than normal portrait use.
Built-in 2W×2 speakers are useful for basic system audio, but they are not a replacement for dedicated speakers or a headset.
Gaming performance: 180Hz needs the right connection and GPU
Yes, ASUS documents 3440×1440 operation at 180Hz through supported DisplayPort modes. For a PC, DisplayPort 1.4 should be the default connection for maximum refresh rate. HDMI 2.0 is more limited and should not be assumed to provide the same native-resolution refresh mode.

Some regional ASUS pages label 180Hz as an overclocked mode. Therefore, confirm the specification for the exact regional SKU and firmware rather than assuming every VG34VQL3A behaves identically.
The monitor’s compatibility is not the same as its gaming performance. A GPU may be able to output the signal while still struggling to render modern games at 180 frames per second. 3440×1440 contains roughly 34% more pixels than 2560×1440. Competitive games may reach high frame rates with sensible settings, while demanding AAA games may need upscaling, reduced quality settings or a lower frame-rate target. Adaptive-Sync is more practical than forcing every title to sustain 180fps.
Console buyers should be cautious: most consoles do not support the monitor’s full 3440×1440/180Hz PC mode, and ultrawide output is often limited or unavailable. Verify the console’s supported resolutions before purchasing.

VA contrast, response time and motion
VA technology is the monitor’s main image-quality advantage. ASUS specifies 4000:1 typical contrast, which should produce deeper blacks than a typical IPS LCD in a dark room. That makes the display well suited to racing games, RPGs, strategy titles, simulations and cinematic content.
Rank #3
- Ultra-Wide QHD Curved Display: 34-inch QHD (3440x1440) 1500R curved gaming monitor with ultra-fast 180Hz refresh rate designed for immersive gameplay
- Fast Response Time and Motion Blur Reduction: 1ms MPRT response time for smooth gameplay, and ASUS Extreme Low Motion Blur (ELMB ) SYNC technology to further reduce ghosting and motion blur
- FreeSync Premium Technology: Delivers a seamless, tear-free gaming experience by enabling VRR (variable refresh rate) by default
- High Dynamic Range and Color Performance: HDR technology with professional color gamut covering 90% of the DCI-P3 color space delivers enhanced contrast and color performance
- Complete Package Contents: DisplayPort cable, USB Type-B to A cable, L-shaped Screwdriver, Power cord, Quick start guide, and Warranty Card included in the box
The trade-off is motion behavior. VA pixels can transition more slowly in dark scenes, producing dark smearing or trailing. ASUS’s “1ms gray-to-gray” figure is a manufacturer claim, not an independently measured average, and it does not guarantee zero ghosting.
- Refresh rate describes how often the screen updates.
- GtG response time describes pixel transitions between gray levels.
- MPRT usually refers to motion clarity associated with strobing or backlight behavior.
- Input lag is the delay between an input and the displayed result.
The monitor includes Variable Overdrive and ASUS’s ELMB motion-blur reduction feature. Overdrive can reduce visible trailing but may create bright overshoot if set too aggressively. ELMB can affect brightness and may impose restrictions on other controls; do not assume every ELMB and Adaptive-Sync combination behaves identically without checking the OSD.
HDR and color: useful, but entry-level
The VG34VQL3A supports HDR10 and is rated for VESA DisplayHDR 400. That means it can accept HDR content and is brighter than a basic SDR monitor, but it should not be confused with a high-impact HDR display.
The specifications do not identify a full-array local-dimming system. As a result, the monitor is best described as HDR-compatible and brighter than a basic SDR display, but not a premium HDR monitor. Highlight intensity, black levels, blooming and tone mapping require independent testing and can vary by content.

- 34-inch WQHD Curved Display: 3440 x 1440 resolution with 1500R curvature and versatile dual mode performance switching between WQHD 200Hz or HD 400Hz via hotkey
- Ultra-Fast Response Time: 0.5ms minimum response time reduces ghosting for fluid gaming experience and ELMB SYNC technology enables ELMB together with variable refresh rate, eliminating ghosting and tearing for sharp gaming visuals
- Smooth Gaming Technology: AMD FreeSync Premium and exclusive Variable Overdrive technology ensure seamless, tear-free gaming performance
- High Dynamic Range Display: HDR technology with DisplayHDR 400 compliance supports HDR-10 format to enhance bright and dark areas for improved visual quality

ASUS advertises 125% sRGB coverage. This is a color-gamut figure, not a Delta E accuracy score. Wide gamut does not guarantee professional color accuracy or reliable factory calibration. For color-critical work, plan to calibrate the display and consider whether a flat IPS or professional monitor is more appropriate.

Connectivity includes two HDMI 2.0 ports, two DisplayPort 1.4 inputs, a 3.5mm headphone output and a USB hub with one upstream and three downstream ports. The hub requires the supplied USB upstream cable to be connected to the host computer; connecting only DisplayPort or HDMI will not activate the USB ports.
There is no USB-C video input, USB-C power delivery, integrated KVM or Ethernet function listed in ASUS’s specifications. Laptop users who want one-cable video, charging and peripherals will need a separate dock or a different monitor.
The 21:9 workspace is useful for placing two windows side by side, editing wide timelines and keeping a game or reference material visible alongside another application. The curve can be less natural for precise office or design work, and the monitor’s 3440×1440 resolution places more demand on the GPU than ordinary QHD.

Recommended setup
- Connect the graphics card to a DisplayPort input on the monitor.
- Connect the USB upstream port to the computer if you need the monitor’s USB hub.
- Open the monitor OSD and confirm DisplayPort Stream is set to DP 1.4 when appropriate.
- In Windows, open Settings → System → Display → Advanced display and choose the VG34VQL3A.
- Select the highest available refresh rate.
- In NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Software, select 3440×1440 under the PC or native-resolution section.
- Enable Adaptive-Sync on the monitor and variable refresh in the graphics driver.
- Test VRR in an actual game; do not assume it is active simply because the monitor is connected.
If 180Hz is unavailable, check DisplayPort versus HDMI first, then confirm GPU support, DP 1.4 mode, Windows refresh settings, docks, adapters, KVMs and receivers. HDR, color depth or custom resolutions can also affect available bandwidth. Trying another DisplayPort cable or resetting the monitor can help; forcing unsupported custom timings should not be the first fix.
What to check during the return window
- Dead or stuck pixels.
- Backlight bleed, VA glow and uneven brightness.
- Dark-scene smearing in games.
- VRR brightness flicker in menus, loading screens or fluctuating frame-rate ranges.
- Stable 3440×1440 operation at the advertised refresh rate.
- HDR behavior in supported games and video.
- USB hub operation after connecting the upstream cable.
- Stand movement, VESA compatibility and desk clearance.
- Unwanted coil whine or power-adapter noise.
VRR flicker and VA trailing are potential behaviors rather than confirmed defects in every unit. Likewise, individual owner reports about tint, HDR or smearing should be treated as anecdotal signals, not evidence of a universal failure rate.
Alternatives to consider
Compare the VG34VQL3A with current models at their actual sale prices. ASUS’s captured US catalog showed the VG34VQL3A at $349 and the ASUS TUF VG34VQ3B at $299, although the latter has different advertised features, including FreeSync Premium rather than Premium Pro and different gamut claims. These were page-snapshot prices, not permanent pricing.
The newer ASUS TUF Gaming Series 5 VG34WQL5A is advertised with a dual-mode design offering WQHD at 200Hz or HD at 400Hz, but its price and regional availability must be checked separately. A flat IPS ultrawide is generally a better fit for office work and viewing consistency. An OLED ultrawide offers superior black levels and response, but usually costs more and has different long-term-use considerations.
Verdict
Buy the ASUS TUF Gaming VG34VQL3A if it is around $300–$350 and you want an immersive, high-refresh 34-inch VA gaming monitor with a good stand and USB hub. It is a sensible choice for racing, RPG, strategy, simulation and general PC gaming, provided your GPU can make meaningful use of 3440×1440.
Compare more carefully if the price approaches newer 200Hz VA monitors or entry-level OLED ultrawides. Skip it if you need USB-C docking, professional color accuracy, powerful HDR, reliable console ultrawide support or the cleanest motion for competitive shooters.
ASUS’s US retailer page listed Newegg and Micro Center as in-stock sources in the supplied snapshot, while the ASUS Store listing showed $349. Availability, currency, retailer stock and pricing can change, so check the official availability page before purchasing.
