“Artificial intelligence as a dictionary of accepted ideas” is David Morley’s description of how large language models can collect and reproduce the language patterns that make prevailing assumptions sound like common sense. In his article, first published on 9 October 2026 in the European Journal of Cultural Studies, Morley compares these systems with Gustave Flaubert’s late-19th-century Dictionary of Accepted Ideas. The comparison is cultural and methodological, not a claim that software understands ideas or that every model repeats majority opinion.
Morley’s central warning is that pattern-based generation can help police the boundaries of what appears normal, probable or sayable. Reading an AI response critically therefore means asking not only whether it is fluent or factually supported, but also which recurring assumptions its language makes easier to accept.

What does “AI as a dictionary of accepted ideas” mean?
The phrase means that a large language model can act as a vast index of associations already present in language. It processes very large collections of text, learns statistical relationships among words and phrases, and generates a continuation that fits those relationships. Morley characterizes contemporary models as “word-pattern-recognition systems crunching Big Data to identify the most commonly associated interdiscursive patterns in contemporary language and thought.”
“Accepted ideas” here does not mean propositions that have been formally proved or unanimously endorsed. It refers to familiar formulations, inherited categories and repeated explanations that circulate widely enough to appear natural. A model trained on those patterns may produce an answer that sounds sensible because it follows established ways of connecting a subject, a value and a conclusion.

This is an interpretation of how language and culture interact with model outputs. It should not be read as evidence that a model has beliefs, consciousness or a settled worldview. The model is generating text from learned relationships; the ideological question concerns the social effects of making some relationships easier to reproduce than others.
Why does David Morley compare language models with Flaubert?
Flaubert’s Dictionary of Accepted Ideas condensed the clichés and received wisdom of his own society into short, satirical entries. Morley sees a parallel in the way a language model condenses recurring patterns from contemporary discourse. Both projects make repetition visible, but they do so through very different means and with different intentions.

|---|---|---|
| Pattern source | Large-scale data and associations found across contemporary language | An individual writer’s observations of social language and convention |
| Form of condensation | Probabilistic generation of new passages that fit learned patterns | Short literary entries that isolate and satirize clichés |
| Treatment of common sense | Often reproduces familiar formulations as plausible continuations | Deliberately displays received ideas so their absurdity or narrowness can be seen |
| Power and ideology | Raises questions about which voices and categories dominate the data and the output | Uses irony to expose the social authority of conventional opinions |
| Reader’s role | Must question a fluent answer instead of treating it as neutral knowledge | Is invited to recognize and judge the convention being mocked |
The analogy is therefore not that Flaubert invented a primitive version of a neural network. His book was an authored literary artifact; a model is an automated system operating over statistical regularities. The useful similarity is that both reveal how repeated language can sediment convention. The important difference is that Flaubert tried to estrange clichés, while a model may make them usable again in an unmarked, authoritative-sounding form.
How can pattern aggregation make convention look like common sense?
When a phrase, explanation or point of view appears frequently in training material, it becomes part of the model’s learned map of what tends to follow what. Given a prompt, the system selects tokens that are statistically compatible with the context. The resulting paragraph can therefore reflect the center of a discourse even when no person has explicitly instructed the model to defend that center.
Frequency is not the same as truth
A repeated claim may be accurate, contested, outdated or simply conventional. Statistical prominence does not settle its truth. Yet fluent wording can conceal that distinction: a familiar frame arrives with smooth transitions, confident grammar and an appearance of completeness.
Silences matter as much as repetitions
Patterns also shape what is absent. If a minority interpretation is less represented, uses different vocabulary or is usually discussed through someone else’s categories, it may be harder for the model to produce spontaneously. This does not prove that every output excludes minority views; it identifies a structural possibility that users should test.

Scale changes the cultural effect
Flaubert’s entries required a reader to encounter a finite, authored selection. A model can generate a familiar framing on demand, millions of times, across workplaces, classrooms and public services. Repetition at that scale can reinforce a horizon of plausible speech even when each individual answer seems harmless.
What does Stuart Hall have to do with AI ideology?
Morley draws on Stuart Hall’s account of common sense as something that helps constitute the horizons of thought. In this view, common sense is not merely a list of popular opinions. It is the background of categories and assumptions that determines which questions seem reasonable and which answers seem excessive, irrelevant or unintelligible.
Applying that idea to AI shifts the focus from whether a sentence contains an obvious bias to how a system organizes possibility. If an answer repeatedly frames a social problem through one set of institutions, identities or economic goals, those frames can become the default starting point for further discussion. The model is participating in the circulation of common sense, even though it has no personal intention to persuade.
That is why Morley describes AI’s role as “inevitably ideological.” The claim is about mediation: any system that selects, ranks and reproduces language helps shape the boundaries of what is easy to say. It is not a claim that a particular engineer, dataset or model has one all-powerful ideology, nor that every generated sentence has the same political effect.
Is Morley making a technical claim about how ChatGPT and other models work?
Only in a limited sense. The article uses a broad description of large language models as pattern-recognition systems and develops a cultural critique from that description. Its abstract is conceptual; it does not report a controlled benchmark, a model-by-model comparison, a measured bias rate or a causal study showing that outputs change public behavior.
The article also does not establish that models always reproduce majority opinion. Outputs depend on training data, model design, post-training procedures, system instructions, the user’s prompt and the surrounding conversation. Different systems can produce different answers, and the same system can generate different answers to similar prompts.

Those qualifications do not make the argument irrelevant to technical practice. They clarify what must be tested separately. A cultural analysis can identify a risk—normalization of recurring frames—without supplying the quantitative experiment needed to estimate its frequency or effect.

How should readers use AI if its answers may encode accepted ideas?
Use an output as a starting point for inquiry, not as a neutral survey of reality. The following checks make the ideological dimension visible without requiring specialist tools.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ask what is being treated as the default
After reading an answer, identify its implied subject, institution and goal. Who is the normal user? Which costs, risks or values are assumed? Rewriting the prompt to name a different community or objective can reveal whether the first answer reflected a default frame.
Request alternatives, not just more detail
Ask for competing interpretations, minority or dissenting perspectives, and the strongest criticism of the initial explanation. Treat the alternatives as prompts for verification, not as guaranteed balance. A model can reproduce a “debate” template while still selecting the same underlying assumptions.
Check primary evidence independently
For law, medicine, finance, public policy and history, consult authoritative documents or qualified professionals. A polished summary may omit uncertainty or present a disputed interpretation as settled because that is how similar text is commonly written.
Notice what the system cannot easily name
If an answer repeatedly uses abstract terms such as “the market,” “the public” or “users” without specifying who they include, ask for the groups hidden by that wording. Making categories explicit is often more revealing than asking for a longer answer.

Keep human responsibility in the loop
When an AI-generated text will guide a decision, record who reviewed it, what sources were checked and what alternatives were considered. The point is not to eliminate every conventional phrase; it is to prevent fluency from becoming an unexamined substitute for judgment.
What does this comparison mean for people who build AI systems?
Morley’s argument suggests that evaluation should examine framing as well as factual accuracy. A system can answer a narrow question correctly while still presenting one social horizon as the only reasonable one.
- Measure variation in framing: Test prompts that change the affected group, geography, institutional setting or stated objective, and inspect which assumptions remain fixed.
- Document data and post-training choices: Explain what kinds of text were emphasized, filtered or rewarded, since those decisions influence which formulations become easy to generate.
- Evaluate omissions: Look for missing stakeholders, unmentioned trade-offs and unexplained defaults, not only explicit slurs or prohibited content.
- Support contestability: Give users ways to request sources, uncertainty, alternative interpretations and a human review path.
- Separate style from authority: Interface language should not imply that a fluent response is verified merely because it is concise or confident.
These practices do not turn a model into an objective observer. They make its position in the circulation of language more inspectable and give users more agency over the conventions it reproduces.

The analogy connects a nineteenth-century literary experiment with a current infrastructure for producing text. Flaubert’s satire helps readers see that “common sense” can be assembled from formulas and social repetition. AI systems extend the reach of such formulas by generating them interactively, at speed and in forms tailored to each request.
That extension creates a tension. The same system that can expose a cliché by listing alternatives can also make the cliché disappear into an apparently helpful answer. Whether it reproduces or unsettles convention depends on prompts, interfaces, training choices, oversight and the reader’s willingness to interrogate the result.
Morley’s contribution is consequently best understood as a question about cultural power. Who gets to define the language that appears probable? Which experiences are treated as central? When an automated answer becomes the first draft for a lesson, policy memo or search result, whose categories are being carried forward?

What is the most accurate takeaway from Morley’s article?
Large language models can be understood as systems that aggregate and regenerate recurring patterns in language. Like Flaubert’s Dictionary of Accepted Ideas, they expose the force of repetition, but unlike Flaubert’s satirical entries they can present conventions as ordinary assistance. Stuart Hall’s account of common sense explains why that matters: repeated formulations help set the horizon within which people imagine possible questions and answers.
The article, published by SAGE in the European Journal of Cultural Studies on 9 October 2026, is a conceptual critique rather than a benchmark or universal theory of model behavior. Its practical lesson is precise: evaluate AI not only for whether an answer is fluent or factually correct, but also for which assumptions it normalizes, which perspectives it leaves difficult to articulate and who is responsible for challenging those defaults.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Flaubert’s Dictionary of Accepted Ideas a factual encyclopedia?
No. It is a literary, satirical collection of conventional opinions and clichés associated with Flaubert’s society. Its value for this comparison comes from showing how ordinary wording can carry social assumptions, not from offering verified reference information.
Can changing an AI prompt remove ideological bias completely?
No. A different prompt can surface alternative frames, but the model, interface and available evidence still constrain what it can generate. Prompt variation is a diagnostic technique, not proof that the underlying system is neutral.
What evidence would test Morley’s thesis quantitatively?
A study could compare outputs across models and prompts, code recurring frames and omissions, and report how often particular assumptions appear under controlled conditions. A separate user study would be needed to determine whether those outputs change people’s judgments or decisions.
Does an AI-generated consensus reflect what most people believe?
Not necessarily. Training data are assembled from particular sources and are shaped by filtering, licensing, model design and post-training choices. A frequent formulation may indicate textual prominence rather than a measured majority opinion.
