If Ares Wizard is not working in Kodi, the most important fact is that the original Ares Project is no longer a dependable service to repair. Project leader Tekto said the repository and wizard were shut down in November 2017 after a cease-and-desist notice, telling TorrentFreak, “Given the notice, we obviously shut down the repo and wizard as requested.” You may still find old ZIP files or forks, but an old URL, PIN workaround, VPN, cache purge or Kodi reinstall cannot be treated as a guaranteed restoration.
Start by identifying what actually fails—installation, repository connection, launch, dependency resolution, PIN entry or a specific maintenance action. Back up Kodi, update from established sources, reproduce the error and inspect the log. Then use Kodi’s supported add-on manager, Backup add-on and Log Viewer instead of repeatedly trying unverified Ares mirrors.

Is Ares Wizard still supported?
No. The original Ares Project shut down its repository and wizard in November 2017. TorrentFreak’s report quotes project leader Tekto confirming the shutdown. That historical statement applies to the original project; it does not prove that every later Ares-branded fork is malicious, nor that every old local copy will fail to launch.
It does establish a practical boundary: there is no current official Ares service you can rely on for repository updates, PIN validation, dependencies, backups or cleanup. A page that still offers an “Ares Wizard” ZIP may be serving a fork, a repackaged archive or an unchanged file whose network endpoints no longer exist. Treat its identity, maintenance status and compatibility as unverified until you can establish them independently.

Kodi 19 introduced another possible break. Kodi moved Python add-ons from Python 2 to Python 3, so an older add-on must be converted to run correctly on newer Kodi versions. That explains why an old add-on can fail, but you should not declare an unidentified fork incompatible without checking its version and the actual error.
What exactly is failing?
“Ares Wizard not working” describes several different failures. Record your Kodi version, operating system, add-on version if shown, and the exact message before changing anything. A June 2025 troubleshooting article uses phrases such as “Ares Wizard does not load” and “pin not recognized,” but those symptoms do not identify one universal cause.

Keep the original wording and timestamp. “Repository unavailable,” “module not found” and a Python traceback require different responses, so guessing from the screen name wastes time.
How do I back up Kodi before changing add-ons?
Back up first if the installation still opens. A backup protects your configuration while you remove a suspect repository or test a replacement. Kodi’s official Backup add-on documentation covers the repository add-on; Kodi also documents copying the complete data folder manually.
- Choose a destination that Kodi can write to, such as local storage or another connected drive. Check available space and permissions before starting.
- In Kodi, open the official add-on repository, locate Backup, install it, then open its settings and select a destination.
- Run a backup and confirm that files are actually present at the destination. A successful progress screen without a usable archive is not enough.
- If the add-on cannot run, close Kodi and copy its data folder using the operating system’s file manager. The exact location varies by platform; use Kodi’s documentation for the path for your installation.
- Keep the backup separate from Kodi’s live data until troubleshooting is complete.
A full data-folder backup contains Kodi configuration and add-ons, but not media files stored elsewhere. Kodi cautions that restoring a complete folder across operating systems or across major Kodi versions can cause problems. Treat it as a same-platform recovery copy unless the documentation for your target version says otherwise.

How do I update Kodi and isolate the suspect add-on?
Use Kodi’s own update and add-on controls before attempting a replacement. Kodi’s Add-on manager provides the supported repository, update controls and dependency information; you do not need a maintenance wizard for these tasks.
- Open Settings and select Add-ons. Open My add-ons to find the Ares entry or its repository.
- Check the add-on’s information page for an available update, disabled dependencies or an orphaned add-on. Menu labels can differ by Kodi version.
- Check for Kodi updates from the distribution or platform source that supplied your installation. Do not install an unofficial Kodi build merely to make an old wizard load.
- Temporarily disable the suspect add-on, restart Kodi and perform the task that was failing. If the wider Kodi problem disappears, the add-on is implicated; if it remains, investigate the underlying Kodi or network issue.
- Remove the old repository only after you have a backup and have confirmed that no other add-on still needs it.
Isolation is more informative than reinstalling everything. It preserves a known state and tells you whether Ares is the cause or only the first component to display a larger failure.
How do I read the Kodi log?
The log is the decisive evidence when an add-on crashes or a dependency fails. Kodi’s troubleshooting guidance explains how to enable logging and locate the file. Kodi’s official repository also lists Log Viewer for Kodi, which can display the log without manually browsing the data folder.
- Enable debug logging only if the normal log does not contain enough detail, following the controls available in your Kodi version.
- Restart Kodi, reproduce the failure once, and note the exact time.
- Open Log Viewer for Kodi, or retrieve the current log from Kodi’s documented location for your operating system.
- Search around the failure time for the add-on name, “ModuleNotFoundError,” “failed dependency,” repository connection errors, HTTP status codes or permission messages.
- Use the error to choose the next action: repair a writable destination, update a dependency, remove a dead repository or stop using an unmaintained add-on.
A log entry showing a repository connection failure means the endpoint cannot be reached; it does not prove that your internet connection is generally broken. A Python traceback points to the add-on’s code or compatibility. A missing module identifies a dependency problem. Preserve the relevant lines if you ask the add-on developer or Kodi community for help.
What should I do when Ares Wizard will not install?
Do not assume that a failed installation is a temporary Kodi glitch. First confirm that the ZIP came from a developer identity you can independently verify, that the repository is still maintained, and that its stated Kodi version matches yours. Kodi’s unknown-sources setting permits third-party ZIP installation, but Kodi warns that such add-ons can access personal data.

- Open the ZIP’s source page in a browser and check who maintains it, when it was updated and whether the download is delivered over HTTPS.
- Compare the archive’s declared dependencies and Kodi compatibility with the add-on manager’s information.
- Scan the Kodi log for archive, certificate, DNS, dependency or permission errors.
- If the source is an old tutorial URL, a file mirror or an anonymous re-upload, stop rather than enabling additional unknown sources.
An old tutorial’s URL is not provenance for whatever it serves today. No currently authenticated Ares replacement is established here, so there is no safe “official Ares ZIP” to recommend.
What does a failed dependency or Python error mean?
A failed dependency means Kodi could not provide a library the add-on requested. Open the add-on’s information page, inspect its dependencies and check whether each is installed, enabled and offered by a maintained repository. If the dependency belongs only to the discontinued wizard, removing the wizard is safer than downloading an arbitrary replacement library.
Python errors require version context. Kodi 19 and later use Python 3 for add-ons, while an unconverted Python 2 add-on may fail. Check the add-on’s manifest and developer documentation rather than inferring incompatibility from the add-on’s name. If the developer has not published a maintained Python 3 version, use Kodi’s built-in feature or another add-on with verifiable maintenance.
What if the wizard asks for a PIN or closes immediately?
A rejected PIN is not evidence that a universal code exists. A PIN prompt may depend on a remote service that shut down with the original project, or it may belong to a fork with different authentication. Do not install “PIN fix” scripts, random repositories or modified APKs to bypass it.

For an immediate crash, capture the log immediately after reproducing the failure. If the log names an unavailable endpoint, missing module or Python exception, follow that evidence. If it contains no useful entry, disable the add-on and confirm whether Kodi itself continues to operate; that result helps separate an add-on failure from a broader installation problem.

What are the supported alternatives for common Ares tasks?
Choose the tool for the task instead of looking for another all-purpose wizard. Kodi’s official repository and built-in controls cover the routine maintenance jobs Ares users commonly need.

Only a problem that is actually caused by routing, stale local data or a damaged Kodi installation can respond to those measures. None can bring back a repository or PIN service that the original project shut down.
- VPN: changing your route may alter access to a reachable server, but it does not authenticate an unknown fork or restore a closed endpoint.
- Cache clearing: it can remove stale local data, but it cannot create missing repository files or dependencies.
- Reinstalling Kodi: it may repair corrupted application files, while leaving the same discontinued add-on and dead source unchanged after reinstall.
Use these steps only when the log supports them, and retain the backup before removing application data.
When should I remove Ares Wizard completely?
Remove it when the source is unverified, the repository is unavailable, the add-on is not maintained for your Kodi version, or it continues to generate errors after you have captured the log. First back up Kodi, then disable the add-on, restart Kodi and confirm that your other media and add-ons work. Uninstall the repository and its orphaned dependencies through Kodi’s add-on manager rather than deleting random folders.

If a backup or cleanup feature was the only reason you installed Ares, replace that specific function with Kodi’s Backup add-on or manual data-folder copy. If you need diagnosis, use the log and Log Viewer. Stop cycling through mirrors once the evidence shows that the historical project infrastructure is gone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an old Ares Wizard installation still open offline?
Possibly. A local copy can launch if its files and dependencies are intact, but features that contact the former repository or another remote service may fail. Opening successfully does not establish that the copy is safe or maintained.

Look for a consistently identified developer, a maintained public changelog, documented compatibility and HTTPS delivery from the developer’s own domain. A familiar filename, social-media post or old tutorial link is not proof of authenticity.
Will Kodi’s Backup add-on copy my movies and TV episodes?
It backs up Kodi’s configuration and related data, not media files stored in separate folders or on network shares. Back up those media locations independently if you need a complete device recovery.
Why does the same add-on work on one Kodi device but not another?
The devices may use different Kodi major versions, operating systems, Python runtimes, architectures or repository builds. Compare those details in the add-on information and log rather than assuming the working device proves the other installation is misconfigured.
