Yes—PS5 system software updates are generally safe when installed through Sony’s built-in updater or its official manual process, but no update is risk-free. Sony warns that switching off the console during installation can damage it and says not to install system software immediately before or after a power outage. If an update fails, you can retry it, use Safe Mode or a USB update, and eventually reinstall the software. However, Sony’s current published support instructions do not provide a user-facing way to roll back to an earlier PS5 system software version. Reinstallation is recovery, not an undo button, because it deletes all data on the console.
Are PS5 system software updates safe?
For most owners, using the official updater is the safest way to keep a PS5 current. Sony supports automatic updates, the normal console-menu update, Safe Mode updating and a manual USB method. Those routes use Sony’s own files and instructions, but they cannot guarantee that every download or installation will finish without a problem.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The most important safety rule is to leave the console powered on while the installation is running. Sony’s support page states: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your console to be damaged.” It also states: “Don’t install system software directly before or after a power outage.” A stable power connection matters because the software is being written to the console, not merely copied as a game patch.
Do not use update files from forums, file-sharing sites or modified tools. Sony’s instructions are written for official files downloaded from its PlayStation support pages; an unofficial file or an interrupted installation can leave the console unable to start normally.

How do you install a PS5 update through the normal menu?
The ordinary route keeps the process on the console and is the least complicated option when the PS5 is working normally.
- Open Settings.
- Choose System.
- Open System Software.
- Select System Software Update and Settings.
- Choose the available update and follow the on-screen instructions.
Sony also supports automatic updates. The exact availability of a download can depend on the console’s settings and network connection, so check the same menu if you want to confirm that the current software is installed. Sony’s live support page includes a section for the latest features, but the page used for this guidance does not establish a particular version number or release date; do not infer one from a “latest” label.

What should you check before starting?
- Connect the PS5 to reliable power and avoid starting immediately before or after a known outage.
- Use a stable internet connection, preferably one that will not be interrupted while the file downloads.
- Do not shut down the console, unplug it or force a restart once installation begins.
- If you are using a manual method, download only the current file from Sony’s official page: How to update system software on a PS5 console.
What should you do if a PS5 update gets stuck?
Start with the least disruptive remedy. A stalled download is not the same as a damaged installation, so do not jump straight to a factory reset.
- Open Downloads/Uploads on the PS5 and view the error information.
- Select the failed or paused download and choose the option to try it again.
- If it fails repeatedly, restart the network connection and try again when the connection is stable.
- Use Sony’s Safe Mode update guidance if the normal menu cannot complete the update. The instructions are at How to update system software in safe mode.
- If the network route continues to fail, use the manual USB procedure below. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance also suggests trying a wired connection in relevant update errors.
Keep the console on while an installation is in progress. If the PS5 is frozen before installation starts, follow the Safe Mode instructions rather than repeatedly cutting power. Sony’s error-specific page for WS-116522-7 also directs users toward network and USB checks: PS5 Error Code WS-116522-7.
How do you update a PS5 from a USB drive without reinstalling it?
A USB update is an alternative installation route, not a factory reset. It is useful when the console’s online updater cannot download or apply the file.

What you need
- A USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT.
- A computer with internet access to download the official update file.
- At least approximately 1.1 GB of free space for Sony’s update file requirement. This is an approximate space figure from Sony’s support instructions, not a guarantee for every future release.
USB update procedure
- On the USB drive, create a folder named
PS5. - Inside that folder, create another folder named
UPDATE. - Download the official update file from Sony and save it in the
UPDATEfolder. - Rename the file exactly
PS5UPDATE.PUP. Do not add another extension or change the capitalization. - Safely eject the drive from the computer and connect it to the PS5.
- Turn the console off if it is not already off.
- Enter Safe Mode by holding the PS5 power button until you hear the second beep.
- Choose Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device.
- Follow the prompts and leave the console powered on until the installation finishes.
The folder names and filename must match Sony’s instructions. A drive that is not FAT32 or exFAT, a file stored outside PS5/UPDATE or a filename that does not exactly match PS5UPDATE.PUP can prevent the console from detecting the update.
What is the difference between updating and reinstalling PS5 system software?
An update replaces or adds system software while preserving the normal console installation path. Reinstallation is a last-resort recovery operation that removes the existing system software and user data.
| Action | When to use it | Data consequence | Storage requirement stated by Sony |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retry the download | A download is paused or has failed once | Lowest disruption; it does not invoke a reset | Not stated |
| Update through the network or Safe Mode | The ordinary update route cannot complete | Uses the update process rather than a reinstall | Not stated |
| Update from USB | Repeated network or menu failures | Still an update; it is not a factory reset | Approximately 1.1 GB free space for the update file |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Last-resort troubleshooting when other methods fail | Deletes all console data and removes the installed PS5 system software | Approximately 1.2 GB free space for Sony’s reinstallation file |
| Repair escalation | The official troubleshooting and reinstall flow does not restore the console | Service consequences depend on the region and service terms | Not stated |
Sony describes reinstallation as a factory or hard reset and says it should be the last troubleshooting step. Before selecting it, back up anything you can still access, because the deletion is part of the operation rather than an optional cleanup step.
Which Safe Mode options erase PS5 data?
Safe Mode contains several tools with different consequences. Calling every Safe Mode action a “reset” is misleading; read the full option name before confirming it.
| Safe Mode option | What Sony says it does |
|---|---|
| Repair Console Storage | Repairs storage problems without erasing data. |
| Restore Default Settings | Restores settings without deleting stored games, applications, captures or saved data. |
| Reset PS5 | Deletes user data from the console. |
| Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) | Deletes user data and removes the PS5 system software, requiring the reinstallation process. |
Sony’s Safe Mode reference is available at How to use Safe Mode on PS5 consoles and PS4 consoles. If your objective is only to repair storage or restore settings, selecting one of the data-preserving options avoids the consequences of a full reset.

Can you undo or roll back a PS5 system software update?
Sony’s current published support guidance does not offer a user-facing rollback procedure for returning a PS5 to an earlier system software version. The documented flow covers downloading the current software, updating through the network or USB, reinstalling as a last resort and contacting support or repair when those steps fail.
Reinstallation does not provide a rollback. It installs the official reinstallation package available for the console and deletes the console’s data; it is intended to recover a broken installation, not to select an older version. Do not treat a downloaded file from an unofficial source as a downgrade package, because Sony specifically cautions against unofficial update files or methods.
This conclusion is deliberately limited to Sony’s published consumer support instructions. It does not claim that every technical or service scenario is impossible; it means Sony does not document a supported menu command or public procedure that lets an owner choose the previous version.

Follow Sony’s troubleshooting sequence rather than repeating destructive steps. Retry the download, try the network or Safe Mode route, and then use the official USB update. If the console remains unusable after the official reinstall process, Sony directs owners to its support and repair path.

How can you reduce the chance of update problems?
- Use the PS5’s built-in updater or Sony’s official manual files only.
- Keep the console connected to dependable power and avoid installing around a known outage.
- Never turn off or unplug the PS5 during installation.
- For USB recovery, format the drive as FAT32 or exFAT and verify the exact
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUPpath. - Try a retry, network fix or non-destructive Safe Mode option before considering a reset.
- Back up accessible data before any operation labeled Reset PS5 or Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
- Keep the update and reinstall files distinct: the update file is approximately 1.1 GB, while Sony lists approximately 1.2 GB for the reinstallation file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a normal PS5 system software update delete games and saves?
Sony distinguishes an ordinary system software update from the Safe Mode options that reset or reinstall the console. The deletion warning applies to Reset PS5 and especially Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software); read the selected option carefully before confirming it.
What does PS5 error WS-116522-7 require me to check?
Sony’s dedicated error page points users to network and USB checks rather than an undocumented downgrade. Use the guidance at Sony’s WS-116522-7 support page alongside the general Safe Mode instructions.
Do I need a USB drive for routine PS5 updates?
No. A USB drive is only needed for the manual update or reinstall route; a normally working console can update through its network-connected Settings menu. If you buy or repurpose a drive, it must meet Sony’s FAT32 or exFAT requirement for the manual process.

Why does Sony warn about power outages during updates?
The installation writes system software to the console, so an interruption can damage the PS5. Sony therefore advises against installing directly before or after an outage and says not to switch the console off during installation.
