Yes—neoclouds can run production AI workloads, but a provider’s uptime target is not a complete reliability plan. Facility incidents reported by CoreWeave and Crusoe in October 2026 show that power, cooling, and regional capacity failures can interrupt compute and inference. Production readiness depends on whether your design can tolerate those failures through independent capacity, recoverable jobs, portable data, and tested failover—not on a cloud’s SLA alone.

What is a neocloud, and what does “reliable” mean for AI?

A neocloud is a public-cloud provider focused on on-demand AI compute. The OECD uses the term for smaller public-cloud companies specializing in that market and names CoreWeave, Crusoe, Nebius, and Lambda Labs as examples.

For an AI workload, reliability is broader than whether a virtual machine is reachable. A training job may depend on dozens of GPUs communicating over a network, a control plane that can replace or requeue failed nodes, storage that remains available, and enough spare capacity to resume work. An inference service also depends on routing, model artifacts, data services, and the ability to serve traffic when a facility or region is impaired.

It helps to distinguish three measures:

  • Infrastructure uptime: whether a service covered by the provider’s SLA is available under that contract’s measurement rules.
  • Job success: whether a training or inference workload completes useful work despite infrastructure faults.
  • Business availability: whether customers can use the application at the service level your own product promises.

These measures can diverge. A GPU VM may meet a narrow uptime definition while a distributed training run loses progress, or a healthy compute service may be unusable because storage or a dependent control plane is unavailable.

What reliability evidence do neocloud providers publish?

Providers describe engineering controls, but those descriptions are not substitutes for workload-level evidence or contractual terms. CoreWeave says its platform uses fault-tolerant infrastructure, automated fleet, rack, and node lifecycle management, and continuous health monitoring, unified through Mission Control for detection and remediation.

Crusoe describes automatic node swapping, proactive fault detection, real-time performance monitoring, 24/7 enterprise support, managed Kubernetes, and managed inference. These controls can reduce the impact of individual hardware faults and help operations teams respond. They do not establish that every facility, network, storage service, or region is independent from every other failure domain.

The contract is more specific, but still bounded. Crusoe’s GPU-enabled VM SLA, effective in 2026, sets a monthly uptime SLO of at least 99.5%. Its stated service-credit schedule is:

Monthly uptime Credit stated in Crusoe’s GPU VM SLA
95.00%–99.49% 10%
90.00%–94.99% 25%
Below 90.00% 100%

The SLA includes exclusions and states that financial credit is the sole and exclusive remedy. Read the complete contract for the exact service scope, calculation, claim process, and exclusions: a percentage by itself does not tell you which failures count or what a customer can recover.

How much downtime can a 99.5% monthly SLO allow?

At 99.5% availability over a 30-day month, the arithmetic allows about 3 hours and 39 minutes of downtime: 0.5% of 720 hours. That is a useful way to understand the target, not a promise that downtime will be evenly spread or limited to one event.

Monthly aggregation can conceal the timing that matters to your service. Several short interruptions may be more damaging to a latency-sensitive inference endpoint than the same total time during a planned quiet period. A single interruption can also halt a long training run, even if monthly availability remains within the target. Whether an incident affects the SLA depends on its measurement rules and exclusions; whether it damages your workload depends on its architecture and recovery behavior.

Nor is 99.5% a five-nines target. Do not compare two providers’ headline percentages as if they were equivalent unless the covered services, measurement windows, exclusions, and remedies match.

What do recent facility incidents show?

October 2026 incidents make the difference between infrastructure controls and resilience visible. They do not prove that one provider is generally unreliable, but they establish that serious facility-level interruptions are possible even in AI-focused clouds.

CoreWeave: power and cooling disruption

CoreWeave’s status page reported a power event at its US-EAST-15A facility beginning October 22, 2026. Customers could experience compute unavailability, job interruptions, inference disruption, and degraded or unavailable object storage. After partial recovery, the status page said a renewed cooling disruption was under investigation on October 25.

Crusoe: hardware powered down for safety

Crusoe’s status page reported a facility issue in us-east2 beginning October 15, 2026. Affected hardware was powered down as a safety precaution. Recovery involved repairs, safety checks, and moving customers to other available capacity where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both events illustrate correlated risk: a facility problem can affect many machines at once, and a provider may not have enough immediately available capacity to move every customer. The CoreWeave report also shows why compute and object storage should not automatically be assumed to have separate failure behavior. Status updates are part of the evidence too: note how clearly a provider reports scope, changing conditions, mitigation, and recovery.

Does comparative testing show that one type of cloud is more reliable?

One published comparison offers a workload-specific signal, not a general ranking. A Crusoe-sponsored Surf Report study from September 2026 described a 48-hour, 24-GPU Llama 3.1 70B training run with failures injected. It reported goodput of 99.1% for Crusoe Cloud, 94.2% for the tested competing neocloud, and 95.9% for the tested hyperscaler.

Goodput is useful because it focuses on useful work delivered under the study’s test conditions rather than merely counting whether machines were nominally available. But the study was sponsored by Crusoe, tested one competing neocloud, and says production results will vary. It is directional evidence about that particular setup; it cannot establish a neutral industry-wide reliability ranking or predict the result for another model, topology, workload, or region.

The figures also do not support a broad claim that neoclouds are cheaper but less reliable than AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. No like-for-like pricing evidence is established here, and this single sponsored test is not enough to compare all neoclouds with all hyperscaler services. Compare the exact configuration and terms you plan to use, and run a representative workload when the decision is consequential.

How should a production buyer evaluate a neocloud?

Use the following review to test the deployment you actually intend to run. A strong answer should be specific to named services and regions; broad assurances about “enterprise-grade” reliability are not enough.

1. What does the contract actually cover?

  • Identify whether the SLO applies to GPU VMs, managed inference, storage, networking, or some combination.
  • Check the measurement window, calculation method, exclusions, notification requirements, and deadline for requesting credits.
  • Ask whether credits are the only remedy and whether the contract makes any commitments beyond the published percentage.

2. Are your failure domains genuinely independent?

  • Ask which regions and facilities can host the workload, and whether they depend on shared power, cooling, networking, or control-plane components.
  • Determine whether you can shift capacity during an incident, how that shift is initiated, and whether alternate capacity is committed or only available when supply permits.
  • Do not treat two locations as independent until the provider can explain the relevant dependencies and your deployment can use both.

3. What happens when a node or control plane fails?

  • Clarify which failures trigger automatic node replacement and which require your intervention.
  • For managed Kubernetes or inference, test what happens to scheduling, routing, and requests when a node disappears.
  • Review how maintenance notices, incident updates, escalation, and recovery progress are communicated, including the route to 24/7 support if it is included in your service.

4. Can the workload survive distributed-training interruption?

  • Measure GPU-to-GPU network behavior under the intended topology; a multi-GPU allocation is useful only if its communication performance supports the job.
  • Choose checkpoint intervals based on the cost of lost work and test that a checkpoint can be restored on replacement capacity.
  • Verify restart semantics: whether a failed worker causes a clean restart, whether the system requeues the job, and how much progress is retained.

5. Can data and inference recover independently of compute?

  • Check where model files, checkpoints, logs, and durable artifacts live, and whether replicas share a facility or regional dependency.
  • Test export speed and credentials before an incident; a backup that cannot be restored or moved in time is not a practical recovery path.
  • For inference, monitor an end-to-end synthetic request rather than only GPU and VM health, so failures in storage, routing, or the control plane are visible.

6. Is there an operational and commercial fallback?

  • Confirm the support escalation path, observability available to your team, security controls, and compliance evidence required by your organization.
  • Ask how reservations, quotas, and price-change terms behave during capacity constraints, and whether fallback capacity is actually obtainable when needed.
  • Maintain a tested fallback provider or a degraded mode that preserves the most important customer functions if the primary deployment cannot recover promptly.

What safeguards should be in place before launch?

For critical workloads, make recovery an operational capability rather than a document. Before sending important traffic or committing to a long training run, put these safeguards in place:

  1. Deploy across more than one failure domain. Use independent capacity where the service and budget permit; a second region or provider only helps if the workload can actually run there.
  2. Checkpoint and persist artifacts outside the primary region. Include model state, configuration, and the artifacts needed to resume or rebuild—not just a copy of the input data.
  3. Automate restart and requeue. Decide which failures trigger retries, how duplicate work is avoided, and when the system should stop retrying and escalate.
  4. Keep independent backups. Validate restoration and access separately from the primary environment.
  5. Monitor synthetic inference and control-plane health. Alert on user-visible failure, not only machine health.
  6. Define failover and degraded modes. Document what remains available, who makes the switch, and how traffic returns after recovery.
  7. Run a failure-injection exercise. Simulate a node loss and a broader capacity interruption, then measure recovery time, lost work, and data availability against your own service objectives.

These measures address the facility, capacity, and job-interruption modes seen in the reported incidents. A tabletop plan alone cannot demonstrate that checkpoints restore, alternate capacity works, or customers can still reach the application; test the actual path.

So, are neoclouds ready for production?

They can be, when the customer’s architecture supplies the resilience that a single provider endpoint or monthly SLO cannot. The available evidence includes serious engineering controls, a defined GPU VM SLO, workload-level comparative testing, and real facility disruptions. Taken together, it supports a conditional decision—not a blanket assurance that every neocloud or deployment is production-ready.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A single-region, single-provider design that assumes the published SLO guarantees end-to-end availability is not robust for critical AI workloads. Evaluate the specific service and contract, make failure domains and recovery behavior explicit, and prove with a representative exercise that your workload can resume or degrade safely when compute or a facility is unavailable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a 99.5% uptime SLA mean 99.5% of my training work will finish successfully?

No. An uptime SLO measures the service defined in the contract, while completed training work depends on job behavior, checkpointing, networking, and recovery. A useful-work measure such as goodput answers a different question and is meaningful only for the test workload and conditions used.

Can I rely on a provider’s service credits to cover an outage’s business cost?

Not necessarily. In Crusoe’s 2026 GPU-enabled VM SLA, credits are the stated remedy, and the agreement calls them the sole and exclusive remedy. Review the governing contract with your procurement or legal team rather than treating a credit percentage as compensation for lost work or revenue.

Are neoclouds inherently less reliable than hyperscalers?

The available comparison does not establish that. The 2026 Surf Report study was sponsored by Crusoe and compared a single tested competing neocloud and a hyperscaler in one 48-hour training scenario, so it cannot support a general ranking across providers or workloads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is goodput in an AI cloud reliability test?

Goodput describes the share of elapsed time that produces useful workload progress, rather than simply whether infrastructure is reported as up. Its value depends on the benchmark’s workload and failure conditions, so it should not be read as a provider-wide uptime guarantee.
