Short answer: ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are private only in a limited, settings-dependent sense. Each service keeps some conversation data for delivering the service, security, legal compliance, feedback, or safety review. Each also documents circumstances in which people or contracted service providers may see content. Temporary chats and model-improvement opt-outs reduce some uses, but none guarantees zero retention or zero human access.
For any chatbot, treat a conversation as confidential—not as a sealed vault. Do not paste passwords, authentication codes, private keys, unreleased documents, or regulated information unless you have verified the exact business plan, contract, region, and retention settings that govern your account.

People usually mean several different things when they ask whether a chat is private. Separating them makes the practical differences clear:
- Account visibility: whether a conversation appears in your history or activity log.
- Model improvement: whether the provider may use your content to train or improve generative models.
- Human or provider review: whether selected conversations can be examined for safety, abuse investigations, support, quality assurance, or feedback processing.
- Operational retention: how long copies remain on backend systems after you stop using a chat or delete it.
- Connected-service access: whether Google apps, workspace administrators, plugins, or other integrations receive or retain related data under their own rules.
A setting that changes one category does not automatically change the others. Turning off model improvement, for example, is generally a forward-looking choice; it does not necessarily erase data already reviewed, de-identified, or incorporated into systems.

These are consumer-service policies. Business, education, API, and managed-workspace offerings can have different contractual terms, administrator controls, locations, and retention periods.
How private are ChatGPT conversations?
Training use and the “Improve the model for everyone” control
OpenAI’s US Privacy Policy says consumer content may be used to improve services, including training models. Personal Free, Plus, and Pro users can turn off the setting labeled “Improve the model for everyone.” OpenAI’s help documentation says conversations created after that change are not used to train OpenAI models.
The control affects future use; it is not a universal erase button. It does not promise that a conversation already selected for safety work, feedback handling, de-identification, or another permitted process will be retroactively removed from every system.
What Temporary Chat changes
Temporary Chat is designed for a one-off conversation that should not remain in ordinary history. It does not appear in chat history, does not create memories, and is not used to improve models while it is temporary. OpenAI may nevertheless retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

That 30-day safety copy means Temporary Chat is a reduced-retention mode, not a promise that no employee, contractor, automated detector, or lawful authority could ever access the content. Avoid entering secrets even when the temporary mode is selected.
Deletion and exceptions
OpenAI generally targets removal of deleted chats within 30 days. The documented exceptions include legal obligations, safety or security needs, financial-record requirements, and data that has already been de-identified. A chat disappearing from your interface therefore does not prove that every related copy vanished immediately.

- Before entering content, identify whether the account is personal or managed by an employer or school.
- For ordinary consumer use, review the data-control setting labeled “Improve the model for everyone” and disable it if you do not want new conversations used for model training.
- For a sensitive, one-off question, start a Temporary Chat rather than a normal conversation.
- Remove direct identifiers and secrets from the prompt. Use placeholders such as “Customer A” and describe only the facts needed to solve the problem.
- Delete the conversation afterward when it no longer serves a purpose, while remembering that deletion targets and exceptions still apply.
How private are Claude conversations?
Improvement use is presented as a choice
Anthropic’s consumer policy says it will use chats and coding sessions to improve Claude when the user chooses to allow that use. The policy also identifies exceptions: a conversation flagged for safety review may be used for that purpose, and a user can separately opt into programs such as testing. This makes Claude’s ordinary consumer improvement setting more explicitly opt-in than a service whose default permits sharing until you disable it.
“Opt-in” does not mean “never accessible.” Safety investigations, support processes, abuse prevention, and service operations can still involve limited access under the policy.

Deletion windows and the five-year distinction
When you delete a Claude conversation, it disappears from chat history immediately. Anthropic says the associated data is removed from backend storage within 30 days, subject to applicable exceptions.
A separate rule applies when you have enabled improvement use: Anthropic may retain related data in de-identified model-training pipelines for up to five years. That five-year period is not the normal deletion window for a chat you simply removed; it is a possible consequence of permitting improvement use. De-identification lowers the connection to your account but does not make the original disclosure risk-free.
Using Claude for a sensitive one-off request
- Open the privacy or data-control area for your Claude account and leave model-improvement use disabled unless you have a reason to permit it.
- Use the product’s available limited-history or equivalent mode when you do not need a lasting transcript. Labels can change as Anthropic updates its interface.
- Do not include credentials, private keys, medical records, legal files, or confidential company material merely to make the prompt more convenient.
- Delete the conversation after receiving the answer if you do not need it for future reference.
How private are Gemini conversations?
Keep Activity and the default adult setting
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says Keep Activity is on by default for adults. With it on, chats and shared content are saved in Gemini Apps Activity and may be used to provide, develop, and improve Google services, including training generative AI models.
The default auto-delete period is 18 months. Google lets users choose a shorter three-month period, a longer 36-month period, or indefinite retention. Auto-delete is a schedule for activity data; it does not erase copies that have already entered a separate review, feedback, or connected-service process.

Human review and the three-year window
Google says a subset of Gemini chats is reviewed by human reviewers and trained service providers. Those reviewed chats are disconnected from the account and retained for up to three years. Disconnection from the account reduces direct account linkage for the reviewer, but it does not mean the text was never seen or that it is deleted when you remove Gemini activity.
Keep Activity off and Temporary Chat
Turning Keep Activity off or using Temporary Chat prevents future chats from appearing in Gemini Apps Activity and stops model-training use unless you submit feedback. Google still retains those chats with the account for up to 72 hours to provide the service and protect users.

Feedback changes the picture. A conversation attached to feedback can be reviewed and retained for up to three years. Deleting Gemini activity also does not delete copies already reviewed by service providers or data held by connected Google services.
A safer Gemini workflow
- Open Gemini’s activity or privacy controls and check whether Keep Activity is on; do not assume the setting changed after an app update or account migration.
- For a short-lived question, turn Keep Activity off or choose Temporary Chat.
- Do not submit feedback on a conversation containing information you would not want a reviewer to see, because feedback-associated data can have a longer review-retention path.
- Check connected Google apps and any administrator-managed workspace before sharing documents or personal records.
- Use the available auto-delete choice that matches your retention needs, understanding that it does not undo prior review or connected-service copies.
Which chatbot is safest for sensitive information?
There is no evidence here for a single winner across every country, account type, subscription, or integration. The practical comparison is narrower:
- Choose Claude when your priority is an explicit consumer choice about model improvement. Its policy says ordinary improvement use happens when you allow it, while still preserving safety-review and other opt-in exceptions.
- Choose ChatGPT when you value a direct training toggle plus Temporary Chat. These controls reduce history, memory, and training use, but a safety-retained copy can exist for up to 30 days and ordinary deletion has exceptions.
- Choose Gemini only after checking Keep Activity and feedback behavior. It offers Temporary Chat and a 72-hour operational-retention statement when activity is off, but its documentation describes reviewer-retention and feedback-associated data lasting up to three years.
For highly sensitive material, the safest choice is usually not to place the material in a consumer chatbot at all. Use an approved enterprise or on-premises workflow only after reviewing its contract, administrator access, data location, logging, and deletion terms.
Information you should never paste casually
- Passwords, recovery codes, API tokens, authentication cookies, and private encryption keys.
- Unredacted identity documents, payment-card data, or financial-account credentials.
- Patient, client, student, or employee records covered by confidentiality or regulation.
- Unreleased product plans, source code, merger information, or customer lists.
- Any personal story whose disclosure could cause financial, legal, employment, safety, or reputational harm.
If an answer requires context, redact names, account numbers, exact locations, dates of birth, and unique identifiers. Share the minimum facts needed, then remove the chat and any uploaded files when the task is complete.
Why privacy settings can change
Consumer AI products change defaults, feature names, regional availability, and retention language as their services evolve. Recheck the relevant controls after a major app update, account-plan change, policy revision, or switch between personal and managed accounts. A setting on one product surface may not govern a connected service, plugin, workspace administrator, or external integration.
Also distinguish a normal chat from a feedback submission, safety-flagged conversation, uploaded file, generated memory, or data exported to another service. Each can follow a different retention path.
Bottom line
ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini provide useful privacy controls, but none should be treated as a confidential vault. Claude documents the clearest consumer opt-in for model improvement; ChatGPT combines a training toggle with Temporary Chat; Gemini offers Keep Activity and Temporary Chat controls while documenting the broadest reviewer-retention period, up to three years. Use the least-retentive mode available, avoid secrets and regulated data, and verify the exact terms for your plan and region before sharing anything whose exposure would matter.
