AI ETFs can hold dozens of stocks, but that does not necessarily make them broadly diversified. Many concentrate on the same technology platforms, semiconductor makers, cloud infrastructure and AI-related spending. To judge diversification, look beyond the ticker count: check the largest positions, sector and country exposure, fund methodology, costs, liquidity and overlap with investments you already own.

What does diversification mean for an AI ETF?

Diversification has two dimensions. The first is security diversification: how many holdings a fund owns and how much of the portfolio sits in its largest positions. The second is economic diversification: whether those holdings depend on meaningfully different customers, revenue sources and business risks.

A thematic fund can score well on the first measure and still be narrow on the second. A portfolio may hold companies involved in chips, cloud computing, software and online platforms, yet much of its performance may depend on data-center investment, semiconductor demand, cloud budgets or the pace at which businesses adopt AI tools. If those drivers turn against the theme, owning more tickers does not automatically provide much protection.

That is why “50 holdings” or “73 holdings” is a starting point, not a verdict. The weights and business exposures matter: a fund with many small positions can still be dominated by a handful of large companies, while several different holdings can respond to the same underlying market conditions.

Are AI ETFs actually diversified?

They are often diversified across individual securities, but remain concentrated by theme. Two examples show how much the portfolio leaders can matter.

Fund Holdings and portfolio leaders What the figures indicate
FAI 50 holdings; as of September 25, 2026: Microsoft 9.54%, NVIDIA 8.33%, Amazon 7.42%, Broadcom 7.06%, Alphabet 6.89%, Palantir 5.29%, Meta 4.65%, AMD 4.39%, Micron 4.00% and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing 3.67%. The five largest positions together were about 39.2% of the portfolio. It holds many securities, but its leaders have substantial influence.
AGIX 73 holdings; as of September 30, 2026: Meta 4.83%, NVIDIA 3.83%, Alphabet 3.73%, Microsoft 3.52%, Apple 2.87%, Amazon 2.80%, TSMC 2.79%, AMD 2.27%, Tesla 2.26% and Palantir 2.25%. The ten largest positions together were roughly 32.9%, a more even top end than FAI’s, while still including major platform and semiconductor companies.

These are snapshots, not permanent allocations. Holdings and weights can change, so check the latest portfolio file or fact sheet before relying on a particular percentage. The comparison also illustrates why holding count alone can mislead: both portfolios contain many securities, and both include names exposed to overlapping technology and AI investment trends.

How many stocks should an AI ETF hold?

There is no single holding count that makes an AI ETF diversified. More holdings can reduce the effect of an individual company if positions are spread across the portfolio, but the count says little about whether the businesses depend on separate economic drivers.

When comparing two funds, pair the headline count with the weight of the largest position and the combined weight of the largest ten. Then examine what those holdings actually do. A portfolio spread across chip designers, chip manufacturers, cloud providers and software companies may look varied by industry label, but if each depends on continued AI infrastructure investment, the exposures may still move together.

Consider whether the fund includes companies that use AI as well as those that build or supply it. A company’s inclusion in an AI-themed portfolio does not, by itself, establish how much of its revenue comes from AI or how sensitive its results are to AI spending. Review the fund’s stated eligibility rules and methodology rather than assuming that every holding has the same relationship to the theme.

Do AI ETFs just own NVIDIA and Microsoft?

No: the examples above include many other companies, and neither fund is made up only of those two stocks. But NVIDIA and Microsoft appear among the largest positions in both cited portfolios, illustrating that prominent AI-related companies can recur across funds.

That overlap matters if you already own broad-market or technology funds. Those funds may already hold some of the same large companies. Buying an AI ETF can therefore add more weight to familiar names rather than introducing as many independent exposures as the new ticker count suggests. Compare the AI fund’s holdings against your existing portfolio to see whether it adds a different allocation or mainly increases an exposure you already have.

Overlap can be measured in more than one way. A simple company-by-company comparison tells you which names recur; a weight-aware comparison also considers how much of each portfolio is invested in those names. The second view is more informative when a few large positions drive a substantial share of a fund’s exposure.

How do active and index AI ETFs differ?

An actively managed fund gives its manager discretion to select or adjust investments. An index fund follows a defined benchmark, so its eligible holdings and weights depend on the index’s rules. Neither approach guarantees broad diversification or better performance.

Fund Construction described in the cited material What to inspect
BAI BlackRock’s fact sheet dated March 31, 2026, describes an actively managed portfolio spanning infrastructure, intelligence, and applications and services. Review the manager’s current positions and how its chosen segments are represented; active management can change the portfolio but does not itself limit concentration.
AIQ The SEC-filed summary prospectus dated April 1, 2025, says the fund seeks results corresponding generally, before fees and expenses, to the price and yield performance of the Indxx Artificial Intelligence & Big Data Index. Read the index rules for eligibility, revenue screens, rebalancing and any weighting caps. Those rules shape what the fund can own and how its exposures are distributed.

An index label does not explain the portfolio on its own. The benchmark’s construction determines which companies qualify and how they are weighted. An active label does not explain it either: a manager may choose across a broad stack of AI-related businesses, but the actual portfolio can still cluster around a small set of companies or risks.

What should I check before choosing an AI ETF?

Use a consistent checklist for each candidate, then compare the answers with your own portfolio and investment purpose. Investor.gov advises investors to examine fees, risks, how an index is constructed and the fund’s actual holdings.

  • Largest positions: Note the biggest single holding and the combined weight of the top ten. A long list of small positions may not offset a heavy allocation to the leaders.
  • Sector and country mix: Check whether the portfolio is concentrated in technology or particular markets. The number of company names does not reveal where business and market exposure is clustered.
  • Methodology: Determine whether the fund is active or index-based. For an index, read the eligibility and weighting rules; for an active fund, look at the manager’s stated approach and current holdings.
  • Overlap: Compare its actual positions with broad-market and technology funds you already own. Count both recurring names and their portfolio weights.
  • Fees: Compare the expense ratio with similar funds and with broad benchmarks. Fees are an ongoing drag, not a one-time trading charge.
  • Liquidity: Look at trading activity, assets and the bid-ask spread. A spread is the difference between the price buyers are offering and the price sellers are asking; it can affect the cost of entering or leaving a position.
  • Freshness of data: Holdings, weights, assets, spreads and expense ratios can change. Use the latest available fund documents for a decision rather than treating an older snapshot as current.

This process separates the question “Does the fund own many stocks?” from the more useful question “What risks am I adding, and how much of them do I already have?”

How much do AI ETF fees matter?

Fees reduce the return an investor keeps. Investor.gov states, “Fees and expenses reduce the value of your investment return.” Even when two funds provide broadly similar exposure, a higher recurring expense ratio creates a larger hurdle for the fund’s results to overcome.

Measure Expense ratio Qualification
Index equity ETFs 0.14% Investment Company Institute, 2024, asset-weighted average.
Actively managed equity ETFs 0.44% Investment Company Institute, 2024, asset-weighted average.
FAI 0.65% Expense ratio listed for the fund in the cited fund data.
AGIX 1.00% Total annual operating expense reported in the cited fund data.

The industry averages are reference points, not promises about what any fund should charge or deliver. The two thematic examples have higher stated expenses than those averages. Compare each fund’s current fee disclosure, and consider the cost alongside its holdings and methodology rather than treating a low expense ratio as proof of diversification.

Should I buy an AI ETF or a broad-market index fund?

That depends on the role you want the investment to play. A broad-market fund and an AI-themed fund do not necessarily serve the same purpose: the former may provide wider exposure across businesses, while the latter deliberately emphasizes a particular theme. The material distinction is not that one is always preferable; it is whether the concentrated theme exposure fits alongside the rest of your investments.

Before adding an AI allocation, look at your overall portfolio rather than evaluating the ETF in isolation. If broad funds you already own contain many of the same large technology and semiconductor companies, a thematic fund may increase those weights. If you want a more focused position, decide how much thematic concentration you are willing to accept and whether you can tolerate the possibility that related holdings fall together.

Do not select a fund solely because its name includes “AI,” because it has more holdings, or because its recent portfolio appears different. Use the current holdings, fund rules, costs and trading information to understand the exposure you would actually be buying.

What are the main pitfalls when judging diversification?

The most common mistake is treating a high holding count as evidence that a fund has many independent sources of return. Several other shortcuts can produce the same false confidence.

  • Looking only at the first few names: A fund’s top positions matter, but the rest of its holdings can also cluster by sector or business driver. Review the full portfolio and the fund’s stated approach.
  • Comparing percentages from different dates: Holdings snapshots are not necessarily simultaneous. Use dates shown with the figures and retrieve current documents before comparing live allocations.
  • Assuming thematic exposure is uniform: Funds can use different definitions of AI-related companies and different construction methods. A shared label does not mean identical holdings or risks.
  • Confusing a lower fee with lower risk: Costs and portfolio risk are different characteristics. Evaluate each separately.
  • Ignoring the existing portfolio: A fund can look diversified on its own while adding little company-level variety to an investor’s overall holdings.

A useful decision is therefore based on the fund inside the portfolio, not just the fund in isolation. The relevant question is how its positions and risks change the exposure you already have.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI ETF lose value even if AI adoption keeps growing?

Yes. A theme can expand while the fund’s share price declines, because market expectations, company valuations, costs or broader market conditions can change. Growth in an industry does not guarantee that investors will earn a positive return from every company associated with it.

Do I own the underlying companies when I buy an AI ETF?

You own shares of the ETF, not individual shares of every company in its portfolio. The fund holds or obtains exposure to its investments according to its structure, and its value reflects the performance and costs of that portfolio.

Can I use an AI ETF as my entire investment portfolio?

That would make a single theme central to your portfolio, rather than spreading exposure across a broad range of sectors and business drivers. Whether that is appropriate depends on your financial goals, time horizon and tolerance for losses; the fund’s theme label alone cannot answer that.
