ArborStride AI is an open-source routing concept that chooses thermally easier walking and running paths instead of simply choosing the shortest route. It combines OpenStreetMap street geometry with canopy, weather and surface variables, predicts pavement temperature and cooling from trees, then applies those predictions to an A*/Dijkstra route. The project also describes spoken cues, an eyes-free OLED Pocket Mode and one-click GPX export for Garmin watches, Apple Watch workflows and Strava.

Its headline cooling figures—7.8°F to 9.2°F on heavily canopied segments—are outputs reported by the project author, not independently validated ArborStride measurements. Treat the system as a promising heat-avoidance aid, not a medical-grade exposure meter or a guarantee that every shaded route will feel cooler.

What is ArborStride AI?

ArborStride AI is a proposed thermal-comfort-first navigator for walkers, runners, dog owners and families. Instead of optimizing only for distance or travel time, it tries to steer people through continuous tree cover and away from heat-retaining pavement. The project is presented as open source and local first, with a modular stack that can run a map interface, generate spoken guidance and export a route for another navigation device.

The central idea is simple: two streets of equal length can expose a person to very different heat. A broad asphalt road in direct sun may be far less comfortable than a slightly longer street under mature trees. ArborStride attempts to quantify that difference and place it directly in the routing objective.

How does ArborStride calculate a cooler route?

The project combines several data layers and models before calculating a path. Each layer contributes a different part of the exposure estimate.

Street and environmental inputs

OpenStreetMap supplies the street geometries and pedestrian network. The proposed feature set then adds solar elevation, ambient temperature, relative humidity, canopy density, pavement albedo and tree species. Solar elevation helps estimate whether a segment is receiving direct sun at a particular time; canopy density and species provide clues about shade continuity; albedo represents how much incoming radiation the pavement reflects.

Those inputs matter because a route can be shaded at noon but exposed later in the afternoon, or appear leafy from above while leaving gaps large enough for substantial radiant heat. Using time-sensitive solar information is therefore more informative than assigning a permanent “tree-lined” label to a street.

TabPFN-v2 surface-temperature predictions

ArborStride’s microclimate component uses Prior Labs TabPFN-v2 for in-context tabular regression. The described outputs are predicted surface temperature and a cooling delta—the estimated difference between a segment’s exposed and canopy-influenced conditions.

The model is not described as measuring a person’s complete thermal state. Surface temperature is one component of outdoor comfort; wind, humidity, clothing, activity level and mean radiant temperature can change how hot a route feels even when pavement temperatures are similar.

A* and Dijkstra with thermal weighting

After creating segment-level predictions, the routing layer applies a physics-weighted A*/Dijkstra graph. The project gives this illustrative cost function:

Distance × (1.0 - 0.65 × CanopyCoverage/100) × ThermalPenalty

In this formulation, distance remains important, but canopy reduces the effective cost and a thermal penalty raises the cost of hotter exposure. A segment with more than 80% mature oak canopy can receive up to a 65% routing discount in the project’s design. That is a routing preference, not a claim that the street is 65% cooler.

Natural-language and audio guidance

Google Gemma 2 converts structured physics results into 15-word sensory waypoint prompts and a three-bullet field briefing. ElevenLabs is described as the source of whispered turn-by-turn cues, while the browser Web Speech API serves as a fallback when connectivity drops.

This separation between computation and narration is useful: the route engine can keep its numerical data while a language model turns each decision into a short instruction such as a canopy change or a hotter crossing. The prompts should be treated as guidance, not as a substitute for watching traffic, crossings or trail conditions.

Map, pocket and deployment layers

The visual interface is built around Leaflet GIS. For people who do not want to keep looking at a phone, the project describes an OLED black-screen Pocket Mode that sends spoken cues to earbuds. Vercel serverless deployment is documented, with optional Render, Docker Compose and Railway blueprints for other hosting arrangements.

How do I use ArborStride to plan a heat-avoiding walk?

The documented workflow is a route-planning sequence rather than a promise that every installation exposes identical controls. Use the map to inspect thermal conditions, then export the resulting path if you want hands-free navigation.

  1. Choose the start and destination. Begin with the walking or running endpoints you would normally enter in a map. Keep the activity and time of day in mind, because solar elevation and weather are part of the feature set.
  2. Review the canopy and heat layers. Look for continuous tree cover rather than a single isolated park tree. Compare the displayed thermal prediction or cooling delta across candidate streets.
  3. Decide how much distance you will trade for comfort. A thermally preferable route can be longer. The A*/Dijkstra objective is designed to make that compromise explicit instead of hiding it behind a shortest-path result.
  4. Check the spoken waypoints. If you use Pocket Mode, confirm that the prompts are short enough to hear safely and that earbuds do not block traffic awareness. The Web Speech API fallback may be useful when a network connection is unreliable.
  5. Export the route as GPX. ArborStride explicitly claims one-click GPX export compatible with Garmin, Apple Watch and Strava workflows. The export is a route file; the project does not establish proprietary, automatic synchronization with any particular watch.
  6. Verify the file on your navigation device. Import procedures differ by watch, phone and service. Confirm that the route appears before leaving, and carry a conventional map or return plan in case the device loses signal or battery.

How much cooler are ArborStride routes supposed to be?

The project author reports that surface radiation can raise ground temperatures 10°F to 15°F above ambient air. The same project post says summer asphalt can be 15°F to 25°F hotter than shaded corridors. These are broad explanatory claims, not measurements from a published ArborStride field trial.

For segments with more than 80% mature oak canopy, the design allows up to a 65% routing discount and reports predicted surface-heat reductions of 7.8°F to 9.2°F. Those figures are model outputs attributed to the ArborStride project post in 2026. They should not be read as a guaranteed air-temperature reduction, a reduction in mean radiant temperature, or a personal heat-safety threshold.

A separate 2026 abstract-level result in Building and Environment, titled Cool routes: Real-time human thermal exposure routing, describes a SOLWEIG/Dijkstra system that reduced average mean radiant temperature by up to 3.8°C with detours under 3% in length. That result supports the broader feasibility of heat-aware routing, but it is not an independent validation of ArborStride’s 7.8°F–9.2°F values.

How accurate are the cooling predictions?

ArborStride’s exact prediction accuracy is not established by an independent benchmark in the project material. The canopy, pavement and weather variables are physically relevant, yet errors can arise from stale tree data, missing shade from buildings, changing humidity, parked vehicles, construction, irrigation and fast-moving weather.

The most important distinction is between a model’s relative ranking and its absolute temperature. Even if the model is imperfect in degrees Fahrenheit, it may still help identify a consistently more exposed street. Conversely, a route that looks excellent in a canopy layer can have a hot crossing, a wide unshaded plaza or a gap in the tree line that matters to a person on foot.

  • Use predictions comparatively. Prefer the cooler of two plausible routes, but do not interpret a displayed delta as a guaranteed body-temperature change.
  • Check the timestamp. A route calculated for morning shade may be unsuitable in late afternoon when solar elevation changes.
  • Watch for local anomalies. Dark pavement, reflective facades, construction zones and open intersections can defeat a neighborhood-scale estimate.
  • Keep normal heat precautions. Carry water, slow down, seek real shade and stop if you develop symptoms of heat illness.

What other heat-aware routing work shows

ArborStride is part of a wider technical direction rather than a completely isolated invention. The alternatives below use different thermal metrics and data strategies, so their results are not directly interchangeable.

Project or system Thermal metric or output Core data or method Geographic or performance detail
ArborStride AI Predicted surface temperature and cooling delta OpenStreetMap, solar elevation, ambient temperature, humidity, canopy density, pavement albedo and tree species; TabPFN-v2 with A*/Dijkstra Author-reported 7.8°F–9.2°F predicted surface-heat reduction for qualifying oak-canopy segments
HeiGIT HEAL/openrouteservice work Solar-Exposure-Index Deterministic shadow calculations from DSM and DTM geodata applied to OpenStreetMap road segments Reported coverage of all 80 German large cities plus Worms, Walldorf and Neckargemünd
Cool routes: Real-time human thermal exposure routing Mean radiant temperature SOLWEIG with Dijkstra routing Abstract-level result: up to 3.8°C lower average mean radiant temperature with detours under 3%
TU Delft open-source workflow UTCI values SOLWEIG samples UTCI onto an OpenStreetMap pedestrian network, followed by weighted Dijkstra routing and user preferences Repository record describes the workflow; a specific city coverage figure is not stated

HeiGIT says its heat-avoiding application is freely accessible at shaded.openrouteservice.org and that cities and communities can collaborate by adding local sensor or temperature data. That approach illustrates an important complement to ArborStride: deterministic building-shadow calculations and local measurements can improve a model where tree or pavement information is incomplete.

Can I follow an ArborStride GPX route on a watch?

Yes, if the watch or companion service accepts GPX routes. ArborStride explicitly describes one-click GPX export compatible with Garmin, Apple Watch and Strava. This makes a GPS running watch the clearest hands-free companion for the project’s use case, because you can follow a precomputed route without holding a phone continuously.

Compatibility should not be confused with automatic account synchronization. The documented capability is export of a GPX file; transfer steps, turn-by-turn behavior, map rendering and offline storage depend on the receiving device and service. Test the import at home, charge the watch and retain a backup route before starting a long run.

What are the project’s main limitations?

Predictions are not field validation

The 2026 ArborStride post reports design figures, but it does not establish an independent sensor campaign validating each predicted delta. A pilot should compare predictions with measured surface or radiant temperatures across seasons and times of day.

Canopy is not the whole thermal environment

Trees can reduce direct radiation, yet humidity, wind, reflected heat and the geometry of nearby buildings still influence comfort. A route can have high canopy coverage and an uncomfortable crossing, or lower canopy coverage with useful shade from buildings that the model does not fully represent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coverage depends on data quality

OpenStreetMap geometry is broad and useful, but local completeness varies. Tree species, canopy age, pavement material and recent construction may be missing or outdated. Municipal sensor feeds could improve local calibration where they are available.

Audio does not remove navigation risk

Whispered cues and Pocket Mode reduce screen dependence, not the need for situational awareness. Keep volume low enough to hear vehicles, cyclists and other pedestrians, and pause the route when crossing or entering unfamiliar terrain.

When is a thermal route better than the fastest route?

Choose the thermal objective when heat exposure is the factor most likely to determine whether you finish comfortably. It is especially relevant for midday walks, hot-weather runs, dog walks on pavement and family outings where a small temperature difference can change pace and hydration needs.

  • Prefer ArborStride-style routing when you can accept a detour and the map shows continuous canopy along most of the path.
  • Prefer a conventional shortest route when time, accessibility, emergency access or a fixed appointment matters more than exposure.
  • Use both when possible: calculate the heat-aware route, inspect its crossings and steep sections, then reject any segment that is unsafe or inaccessible.

The practical value is not a single “coolest” score. It is the ability to make the distance-versus-exposure trade-off visible and export that decision to a device you can follow outdoors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does ArborStride work without an internet connection?

The project describes a browser Web Speech API fallback when connectivity drops, and it is framed as local first. It does not establish that all map data, model inference and GPX export remain fully available offline, so users should verify offline behavior in their own deployment before relying on it away from coverage.

What is the difference between surface temperature and UTCI?

Surface temperature describes the heat of a material such as asphalt, while UTCI combines several weather and exposure variables into an outdoor thermal-stress index. A street can therefore have a high pavement temperature without producing the same UTCI as another street under different wind or humidity conditions.

Can municipalities improve ArborStride’s predictions?

Yes, in principle. The architecture can accept local temperature or sensor data, and HeiGIT similarly describes collaboration with cities and communities to add local measurements. Any improvement depends on consistent sensor placement, calibration and maintenance.

Is a shaded route always shorter than a sunny route?

No. Shade-aware routing intentionally permits a distance trade-off when thermal exposure is lower. The best choice depends on how much extra distance you can tolerate, the time of day and whether the detour introduces crossings, hills or accessibility barriers.
