Instead of Cluster API
Cluster API alternatives
Cluster API is an open-source project for platform operators who need declarative control over the lifecycle of multiple Kubernetes clusters. It supports creating, scaling, upgrading, and destroying clusters across cloud and on-premises environments through interchangeable providers, with kubeadm as its default bootstrap provider. The project covers a broad provider ecosystem and offers clusterctl or the Cluster API Operator to manage provider components. Its free price does not include infrastructure or provider costs, and customers manage the control plane themselves.

The fit is less direct if you need one cluster spanning multiple infrastructure providers or want to manage clusters Cluster API did not provision: the project says it does not handle either. Using it also requires an existing Kubernetes management cluster accessible through kubectl, and its production guidance calls for backup and disaster recovery policies. When comparing alternatives, weigh whether you need cluster lifecycle automation or broader fleet operations such as tenant isolation, application scheduling, self-service, or a graphical interface. Also consider each product's deployment model, supported environments, and any free-plan limits or paid pricing.
