Apple has an established home platform, but a new smart-home hub and related hardware remain reported plans—not confirmed products in the available announcements. The broader bet is easier to see: Apple Home already connects compatible accessories to iPhone, Siri, and, for some features, a home hub. John Ternus, who became Apple CEO on September 1, 2026, arrives with a hardware-engineering background as Apple advances a more capable Siri.
Why Apple’s home strategy matters now
Apple’s home opportunity is not starting from zero. Apple Home and the Home app already let people control compatible accessories through Apple devices and Siri. A stronger Siri could make those controls more useful, while dedicated home hardware could give Apple another place in the home. The first two points are grounded in Apple’s published platform and software plans; the hardware push is still press reporting, not an Apple product announcement.

Apple’s own scale helps explain why a home strategy could fit its broader business, though it does not establish whether that strategy will succeed. In its April 2026 succession announcement, Apple said its market capitalization grew from approximately US$350 billion to US$4 trillion under Tim Cook, a more than 1,000% increase; annual revenue rose from US$108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than US$416 billion in fiscal 2025; and the active installed base exceeded 2.5 billion devices. Apple also said Services became a more than US$100 billion business during Cook’s tenure. Those are company-reported figures, not independent measures of its home business.

Who is John Ternus?
Apple says Ternus became CEO effective September 1, 2026. The company’s leadership biography says he joined Apple in 2001, became a vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013, and joined the executive team as senior vice president in 2021. His engineering and product background makes a hardware-led expansion a natural question for Apple watchers, but it does not confirm any specific home product or strategy.

Announcing the succession in April, Apple board chair Arthur Levinson said, “We believe John is the best possible leader to succeed Tim and as he transitions to CEO we know his love of Apple, his leadership, deep technical knowledge and relentless focus on creating great products will help lead Apple to an extraordinary future.”

Category support does not guarantee that every device in a category offers every feature. Check the individual accessory’s Apple Home compatibility, Matter certification, and supported functions before buying. Apple also cautions accessory makers not to imply Apple sponsorship or endorsement; compatibility is not an endorsement.
Do you need a HomePod or Apple TV for Matter?
It depends on the accessory’s connection and what you want to do with it. Apple’s published guidance distinguishes pairing and local control from automations, notifications, remote access, and Thread connectivity.

| Use case or connection | Apple hardware and software described in Apple’s guidance |

| Automations, notifications, and remote access | A compatible HomePod or Apple TV home hub |
| Thread-based accessory | A Thread-enabled Apple Home hub; some older hub models require a compatible Thread border router |
These are requirements in Apple’s developer guidance, not a guarantee that every accessory works with every listed setup. Confirm the current Apple requirements and the accessory maker’s specifications, especially for Thread devices and older hubs.
What could a more capable Siri add?
Apple announced Siri AI in June 2026, describing personal-context understanding, actions across apps, screen-aware answers, and access to web information. Those capabilities could make voice control and home-related requests more flexible if Apple connects them to Apple Home. Apple has not established in the cited announcement that a reported new home hub will ship with these features, so they should not be treated as confirmed specifications for that device.

Apple’s Craig Federighi, senior vice president of Software Engineering, characterized the releases as “the next generation of Apple Intelligence across our platforms” and called Siri “a profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable Siri.” That is Apple’s promotional description, not an independent assessment of Siri’s performance. Apple also says features may change and documents device, language, beta, and regional limitations; check its announcement for the details that apply to a particular feature and market.

As of October 12, 2026, the October 13 event described in those reports is still in the future. Treat the rumored hub—and the question of whether it would be a HomePod with a screen—as open, not settled. Apple’s own announcement is the source to consult for any confirmed product details.
What this means if you are setting up Apple Home
You can build around supported accessories and Apple’s existing platform without waiting for an unannounced device. Choose accessories based on the job you need done, then confirm their compatibility and connection requirements.
- Choose the function. Decide whether you need, for example, a light, outlet, lock, sensor, or thermostat.
- Check Apple Home and Matter support. Verify the specific product and features in the maker’s listing rather than relying on its category alone.
- Check its connection type. Determine whether it uses Thread or a non-Thread connection and whether your setup needs a Thread border router.
- Match hardware to the intended features. Use Apple’s current guidance to determine whether your planned use requires only pairing and local control or also a home hub for automations, notifications, or remote access.
For example, a Matter smart plug compatible with Apple Home is a relevant option if your goal is to control an outlet. Apple lists outlets among supported Matter categories, but the product’s own listing and Apple’s current hub guidance still determine what that particular plug can do in your setup.
