What is Overdrive, and what is actually confirmed?
Overdrive’s indexed website describes it as “a game library for the PS5” and says the app appears on the console’s home screen. That is the site’s own description; the page could not be accessed directly, and no independent source confirmed Overdrive’s operation, catalog, or access to free games or downloadable content (DLC). The indexed Overdrive site therefore supports only the limited conclusion that a site made those claims—not that the app delivers what the headline suggests.

A forum post asking whether an Overdrive app for downloading library titles is real reflects the uncertainty readers have encountered, but it is not evidence that the app works. There is not enough verified information to establish what Overdrive does in practice.

Overdrive drew attention amid September 2026 coverage of Relapse, a reported PS5 jailbreak. On September 30, Ars Technica reported that Relapse worked on firmware up to version 13.6; the article described a PS5 browser WebKit vulnerability leading to kernel write access. Sony had released system software version 14.00.00 in mid-September, according to that report. Ars Technica’s September 30 report is a dated account, not a guarantee about what firmware is vulnerable now.

Tom’s Hardware reported the same day that Relapse supported firmware versions 7.00 through 13.60. It also described the practical tension between keeping a console on firmware associated with an exploit and installing newer game updates that may require later firmware. Its example involving Wolverine relied partly on player reports, rather than a universal compatibility finding. Tom’s Hardware’s September 30 coverage should be read with those dates and qualifications in mind.
The reporting’s version ranges are not perfectly identical, and firmware support can change as Sony releases updates or researchers revise their findings. Neither report establishes Overdrive’s functionality or proves that it supplies games or DLC.

The firmware tradeoff: exploit reports versus newer games and updates
Keeping a console on an older firmware version may preserve compatibility with an exploit described in dated reporting, but it can limit access to system updates and game releases or updates that require newer software. Updating may restore access to those newer releases while changing the console’s compatibility with the reported exploit. This is a tradeoff described in the September 2026 coverage, not a recommendation to jailbreak or to avoid updates.

What Sony’s US software agreement says
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s US PlayStation 5 System Software Licence Agreement prohibits using tools to bypass PS5 security or authentication mechanisms and using hardware or software to make system software accept unauthorized or pirated software. It also prohibits unauthorized or modified software or hardware and downgrading system software. The agreement lists possible actions if Sony determines its terms were violated. These are terms in Sony’s US agreement—not a universal statement about the law in every country. Read Sony’s US PS5 System Software Licence Agreement for its full wording and conditions.
What to conclude before trusting a “free games and DLC” claim
- Verified: An indexed Overdrive website describes the app as a PS5 game library.
- Not independently established: Whether the app runs, what its catalog contains, or whether it provides games or DLC at no cost.
- Dated context: September 30, 2026 reports described Relapse compatibility with specified older firmware versions; those reports do not establish present-day compatibility.
- Practical risk: Firmware choices can affect access to newer game updates, while Sony warns that modified consoles or unofficial update data may affect operation, warranty, and repair service.
Until independent, reliable verification exists, Overdrive’s apparent promise of free PS5 games and DLC remains a claim, not a confirmed capability.
