The milestone came on Perseverance’s 2,006th Martian day, or sol, according to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which announced it on Oct. 12, 2026.
What driving record did Perseverance set?
The record is total distance driven over the course of a mission—not the distance covered in a single day. Perseverance’s 28.10 miles passed Opportunity’s previous off-world vehicle record by 0.04 miles, or about 64 meters. The figures are odometer totals reported by NASA/JPL for Oct. 11, 2026.

Perseverance reached the milestone about five and a half years after landing on Mars. It had earlier passed the marathon distance of 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometers) on sol 1,890. That was a useful marker of how far the rover had traveled, but the October 2026 crossing of Opportunity’s total is the record reported here.
Is this the longest drive Perseverance has made in one sol?
No. The cumulative record does not set a new one-sol driving record. NASA/JPL says Perseverance can cover as much as 1,351 feet (412 meters) in a sol. NASA/JPL separately reported that its single-sol record was 1,350.7 feet (411.7 meters), driven on June 19, 2025; that is a different measurement category from the 2026 total-distance milestone. NASA’s 2025 account of the one-sol record describes that drive.

How does Perseverance drive autonomously?
Perseverance uses AutoNav to assess nearby terrain while moving. Its navigation cameras capture images, onboard software builds a three-dimensional map of hazards, and the rover selects a safe path between waypoints chosen by planners on Earth. The rover handles local navigation; people still determine the broader route and daily activities. NASA/JPL says more than 90% of Perseverance’s total distance was driven with AutoNav evaluating terrain.
In NASA/JPL’s 2025 description of Enhanced Autonomous Navigation, the system looks up to 50 feet (15 meters) ahead for hazards and chooses a route around obstacles. Planners also set “keep-in” and “keep-out” areas to constrain where the rover can go. That division of work lets Perseverance respond to the ground in front of it without making it an unsupervised explorer.

The rover’s visual navigation has practical limits. Glare can affect its cameras, which is one reason the team may stop driving by mid-afternoon when heading toward the Sun. JPL deputy team chief Mark Maimone said overcoming those camera artifacts could give future rovers a longer working day.

The mileage matters because it makes more terrain and rock outcrops reachable within mission time. NASA/JPL says longer drives can bring geologically diverse sites within reach faster, giving scientists more opportunities to examine rocks and interpret Mars’ history. Distance alone does not establish a scientific discovery; its value is in expanding where the rover can investigate.

By the record, Perseverance had traveled from an ancient lakebed and up a fossilized river system toward Jezero Crater’s rim. It was investigating the Lac de Charmes region and heading toward Idubi, where the science team hopes to find traces of ancient hydrothermal systems. Such rocks could help researchers investigate past water and the geological conditions that shaped the area.

NASA/JPL reported that the rover’s first mission extension had been approved, beginning in October 2026 and carrying crater-rim exploration through roughly the end of 2028. The agency said the mobility systems remained operational and cited favorable extended-ground-life test results. The end-of-2028 horizon is a plan, not a guarantee; actual operations depend on the rover’s condition and mission decisions.

“The rover that broke this record did so by making its own decisions about the path,” Maimone said in JPL’s announcement. “Given the autonomy to just go, Perseverance is a better driver than the one that landed, and we’re not done.”
