Workout Buddy is Apple’s AI-powered workout companion for Apple Watch. It uses workout data and fitness history to provide spoken motivation, milestone notices, progress insights and a post-workout recap. In watchOS 27, Apple says it can work without the paired iPhone nearby if the watch has Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity—but it still requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone for pairing and Bluetooth headphones for audio. It supports English and Spanish, subject to Apple Intelligence availability in your region.
Apple introduced Workout Buddy in watchOS 26 and expanded its capabilities in watchOS 27. That makes it more than a running pep-talk feature, but it is not a substitute for a human coach or a published, independently validated training program. Apple has not published numerical evidence showing that its coaching improves adherence, pace or fitness outcomes.

What is Workout Buddy on Apple Watch?
Workout Buddy is an Apple Intelligence feature that turns workout and fitness-history data into spoken encouragement and feedback during a supported workout. Apple says it can draw on information such as heart rate, pace, distance, Activity rings and personal fitness milestones to tailor what it says.
It is designed to provide several kinds of feedback, rather than simply announce elapsed time. Apple’s launch examples include a motivational message at the start of a run, feedback at a mile split, recognition of a yearly-distance milestone and a closing recap. The recap example includes distance, duration, pace and average heart rate. Those are examples Apple used to describe the feature, not proof that every workout triggers those exact messages or that the figures represent a performance test.

Apple introduced Workout Buddy with watchOS 26. In watchOS 27, Apple says it adds insights about progress in pace, distance and workout duration, as well as the ability to run without the paired iPhone nearby when the watch has a Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. In other words, the watch remains the workout device, but “phone-free” means the phone need not be physically with you—not that the feature has no setup, connectivity or audio requirements.
How does Workout Buddy use workout data?
Workout Buddy combines information about the current session with fitness history to produce spoken prompts. The current workout can supply signals such as heart rate, pace and distance; history can provide context such as Activity-ring progress and personal milestones. Apple describes the result as personalized motivational insights, not as a prescribed training plan.
That distinction matters if you are deciding whether to follow a prompt. The feature is meant to make workout feedback and encouragement more personal, but Apple’s documentation does not establish that its interpretation of your data is equivalent to a coach’s assessment, nor does Apple publish a numerical study of its coaching accuracy or effect on fitness outcomes. Treat a prompt as motivation or a progress cue, not as medical advice or a guarantee that your effort is appropriate.
Apple also says the dynamic generative voice is built using voice data from Fitness+ trainers to give the experience workout energy, style and tone. Apple says Workout Buddy analyzes data privately and securely. These are Apple’s descriptions of how the feature is built and handles information; they are not independent privacy or effectiveness findings.
What changed in Workout Buddy with watchOS 27?
Apple’s watchOS 27 documentation describes two practical changes: progress insights for pace, distance and workout duration, and use without the paired iPhone nearby when the watch has Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. The update therefore makes the watch a more independent workout companion, while retaining the initial iPhone setup and headphone requirements.
Progress insights
The watchOS 27 overview says Workout Buddy adds insights into progress in pace, distance and workout duration. Apple does not specify a universal schedule for these insights or promise that each will appear in every session, so it is better to understand them as additional kinds of feedback rather than a fixed set of alerts.

Using it away from the iPhone
Apple Support’s September 24, 2026, watchOS 27 update notes say Workout Buddy is available without the iPhone nearby when the watch has a Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. That removes the need to carry the paired phone during the workout, but does not remove the need for the watch to be connected or for Bluetooth headphones. It also does not mean the watch can be paired without an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
Does Workout Buddy work without an iPhone?
Yes, during a workout, if the Apple Watch has Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity. Apple’s watchOS 27 update information specifically says the paired iPhone need not be nearby in that situation. The iPhone is still part of the feature’s setup requirements: Apple Support says the watch must be paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
This is a useful distinction for runners, walkers and cyclists who prefer to leave the phone behind. Check the watch’s connection before relying on Workout Buddy away from the phone, and plan to use Bluetooth headphones for its spoken audio. The available information does not say that Workout Buddy works offline with no Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection, so do not assume that a disconnected watch can deliver the feature.
Which Apple Watch and iPhone do you need?
Apple’s watchOS 27 overview lists Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Series 12, Ultra 2, Ultra 3 and Ultra 4 as compatible. It also lists iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), as required for watchOS 27 on that page. Workout Buddy has an additional condition: Apple Support says the watch must be paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not treat the watchOS 27 overview’s iPhone list as confirmation that every phone in that list can enable Apple Intelligence. The feature-specific requirement is the more relevant test for Workout Buddy, and Apple notes that Apple Intelligence is not available in every region or language. Check Apple’s current device and regional availability information for your own phone and setup before buying or updating devices solely for this feature.
| Requirement | What Apple specifies |
|---|---|
| Apple Watch compatibility | SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Series 12, Ultra 2, Ultra 3 or Ultra 4, as listed in Apple’s watchOS 27 overview. |
| iPhone for watchOS 27 | iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), according to Apple’s watchOS 27 overview. |
| iPhone for Workout Buddy | An Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone paired with the Apple Watch, according to Apple Support’s Workout Buddy requirements. |
| Headphones | Bluetooth headphones are required for Workout Buddy. |
| Language | Device and Siri language must be English or Spanish; Apple Intelligence availability varies by region and language. |
| Connectivity when the iPhone is away | The Apple Watch needs Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity for Workout Buddy without the paired iPhone nearby. |
The watchOS 27 compatibility list is not a complete purchasing guide: it does not establish the price of any model, whether a particular watch has cellular service, or whether every listed iPhone supports Apple Intelligence. Those details should be checked for the exact devices and region you plan to use.

Do you need AirPods or Bluetooth headphones?
You need Bluetooth headphones, but Apple’s requirement does not say they must be AirPods. Apple Support lists Bluetooth headphones for Workout Buddy audio. The available requirement does not identify a particular headphone brand or model as necessary.
That makes the audio requirement easy to overlook if you normally exercise with only the watch. Before starting a phone-free workout, confirm that the headphones are paired with the watch and that you can hear spoken audio. Apple’s documentation establishes the headphone requirement, but it does not specify a minimum headphone feature set or promise that every Bluetooth headset will behave identically.

Which workouts can use Workout Buddy?
Apple Support lists Workout Buddy for these workout types:
- Outdoor run and indoor run
- Outdoor walk and indoor walk
- Outdoor cycle and indoor cycle
- Hiking
- Elliptical
- Stair stepper
- High intensity interval training (HIIT)
- Functional strength training and traditional strength training
The support list is specific: a workout type not named there should not be assumed to support Workout Buddy. If you do not see the feature for a session, check that the workout is one of these categories as well as confirming the device, language, headphone and Apple Intelligence requirements.
What does a Workout Buddy session tell you?
Apple’s launch description points to a sequence of motivation and context: a start-of-workout pep talk, in-session comments such as split feedback, recognition of a personal milestone and a recap after finishing. WatchOS 27 adds progress insights related to pace, distance and duration. The exact examples Apple published are illustrations of the kinds of messages the feature can produce, not a schedule or a promise that each message appears in every session.
One Apple example uses a 4.3-mile workout, a 38-minute duration, an 8:58 average pace and a 128 average heart rate in a closing recap. Those values belong to an illustrative dialogue example; they are not a benchmark, typical result or claim about what a user should achieve. The useful takeaway is the type of information Apple says a recap may surface, not the sample numbers.

Workout Buddy may be most useful to someone who wants spoken encouragement and a running interpretation of progress without repeatedly checking the watch display. If you want detailed training prescriptions, a verified coaching methodology or evidence that a particular prompt improves performance, Apple’s published materials do not establish those capabilities.
Is Workout Buddy proven to improve fitness?
Apple has not published a numerical study in the cited official material showing that Workout Buddy improves fitness outcomes, workout adherence or coaching accuracy. Apple’s feature examples explain intended behavior; they do not demonstrate measured effectiveness.
That does not establish that the feature is ineffective. It means there is not enough published evidence in the cited material to quantify its effect. A reasonable way to assess its value personally is to notice whether its prompts are timely, understandable and motivating for your own routine, while continuing to use your normal judgment about intensity and training choices.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check if Workout Buddy is unavailable?
Because the feature has several distinct requirements, troubleshoot them in order rather than assuming that a compatible watch alone is sufficient.
- Confirm the watch model and software. Apple’s watchOS 27 overview lists the supported models as SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Series 12, Ultra 2, Ultra 3 and Ultra 4. Confirm that the watch is running watchOS 27.
- Check the paired iPhone. Workout Buddy requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone paired with the watch. The general watchOS 27 iPhone list does not by itself confirm Apple Intelligence eligibility.
- Check language and regional availability. Apple requires the device and Siri language to be English or Spanish and notes that Apple Intelligence is not available in every region or language.
- Pair Bluetooth headphones. Apple lists headphones as a feature requirement, so verify that the watch is connected to Bluetooth headphones before starting.
- Select a supported workout. Use one of Apple’s listed workout types, such as indoor run, hiking, HIIT or traditional strength training.
- If the iPhone is not with you, check watch connectivity. Apple says the watch needs Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity to use Workout Buddy without the paired iPhone nearby.
If all of these conditions appear to be met and the feature is still missing, Apple’s cited materials do not provide a specific recovery procedure or error-by-error troubleshooting flow. Check Apple Support for current device-specific guidance rather than inferring that the watch is incompatible from one unavailable workout prompt.
Is Workout Buddy worth setting up?
Workout Buddy is worth exploring if you have a compatible watch, an Apple Intelligence-enabled paired iPhone, Bluetooth headphones and a supported workout—and you want spoken motivation or progress cues. Its strongest practical change in watchOS 27 is that a connected watch can deliver the experience while the iPhone stays behind.

It is a less compelling reason to buy or replace a device if you are looking for proven coaching results, detailed individualized training plans or phone-free operation without connectivity. Apple’s published descriptions establish the feature’s inputs, examples, supported workouts and requirements, but not a measurable fitness benefit or a guarantee that every workout will produce a particular prompt.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Workout Buddy give medical or injury advice?
Apple describes it as a motivational workout feature, and its published description does not establish it as a medical or injury-assessment tool. If you have symptoms or need guidance about safe exercise, use qualified medical advice rather than relying on an automated workout prompt.

Apple’s stated availability for the feature is English and Spanish, with the device and Siri language set accordingly. Apple says Apple Intelligence availability varies by language and region, so a translated interface alone should not be taken as confirmation that Workout Buddy is supported.
Will Workout Buddy speak during every supported workout?
Apple lists the eligible workout categories and describes examples of possible prompts, but its published information does not promise a fixed number or timing of comments for every session. Availability of a workout category is not a guarantee that each example message will occur.
Can I use Workout Buddy with cellular turned off?
Apple says the watch needs Wi-Fi or mobile-data connectivity to use Workout Buddy when the paired iPhone is not nearby. The documentation does not establish offline operation when neither connection is available.
