As of October 2026, both the iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra are available US flagship phones with 6.9-inch, 120Hz displays. The Galaxy is lighter, thinner and adds a built-in S Pen and Privacy Display; the iPhone offers a variable-aperture main camera and storage up to 2TB. The better choice depends less on a spec-sheet winner than on your phone ecosystem, camera preferences, preferred features and the price of the configuration you need.

Specifications and prices can vary by region. Cross-device specifications above are from TechRadar’s October 3, 2026 comparison unless a maker’s source is linked in the relevant section. Water resistance is not permanent and can diminish with normal wear; neither rating makes a phone suitable for every water exposure.

Which one should you pick?

Choose iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want Apple’s ecosystem

If your daily setup already includes an iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad or Mac, staying with iOS can make the phone the more convenient choice. The iPhone runs iOS 27 and includes Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. Its variable-aperture main camera is also a notable creative control: Apple says it lets the camera adjust incoming light and depth of field.

Choose Galaxy S26 Ultra if you value its built-in tools

The Galaxy is a strong fit if you want Android customization, already use Samsung or other Android devices, or would make regular use of the built-in S Pen for notes and markups. Its Privacy Display limits visibility from off-angle viewing, a feature Apple does not offer in the cited comparison. The Galaxy is also 35g lighter and 0.9mm thinner despite having a similarly sized screen.

  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Ask “which one and why?” in terms of daily use

For a phone you carry and use all day, the meaningful questions are whether you prefer iOS or Android, need a pen or screen privacy, value camera controls, and want a lighter device. The phones have different camera hardware, but megapixel counts and the number of lenses alone do not establish which takes better photos. No comparable head-to-head camera test is cited here.

How much do they cost, and how do storage tiers compare?

TechRadar’s US comparison published October 3, 2026 listed these starting prices and configurations. They are a dated snapshot, not guaranteed current or sale prices; check the seller’s price for your region and the exact storage tier before buying.

Storage iPhone 18 Pro Max US price Galaxy S26 Ultra US price
256GB $1,299 $1,299.99
512GB $1,499 $1,499.99
1TB $1,899 $1,799.99
2TB $2,499 Not offered on Samsung’s US listing

The entry configurations were nearly the same price in that snapshot, while Samsung’s 1TB option was listed $99.01 below Apple’s. The iPhone’s 2TB tier has no counterpart in Samsung’s US listing. Promotions, trade-ins, carrier offers and regional pricing can change the actual difference.

What do the cameras offer?

iPhone: variable aperture on the main camera

Apple’s 48MP Fusion Main camera adds a variable aperture. Apple describes it as a way to control how much light enters and how much of the image stays in focus. The iPhone also has 48MP ultra-wide and telephoto cameras, according to TechRadar’s comparison. This is the more directly specified choice for someone interested in adjusting light and depth of field through the main camera.

Samsung: four rear cameras and varied telephoto options

TechRadar lists a 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide, and 10MP and 50MP telephoto cameras for the Galaxy. The extra camera and telephoto options offer a different kind of hardware flexibility. Resolution is not a reliable stand-in for image quality, however, and the listed specifications do not establish a winner in photo or video performance.

How do the displays, size and privacy features compare?

Both phones have 6.9-inch displays with adaptive 120Hz refresh rates in TechRadar’s comparison. That makes screen size and refresh rate less decisive than other differences. TechRadar lists the iPhone’s peak brightness at 3,000 nits and the Galaxy’s at 2,600 nits, while giving Samsung the higher pixel density; quoted peak brightness is a specification, not a guarantee of typical brightness in every setting.

The Galaxy’s weight advantage is substantial on paper: 214g versus 249g. It is also thinner at 7.9mm compared with 8.8mm, while their listed length and width are close. If a large phone feels tiring to hold or carry, the lighter Samsung deserves particular consideration.

Privacy Display is Samsung’s distinct screen feature: it restricts what people beside you can see by limiting off-angle visibility. It may be useful on public transport or in shared spaces, though it does not replace a passcode, secure account practices or care with sensitive information.

What should you know about performance and software support?

Apple identifies the iPhone’s chip as A20 Pro. Samsung identifies a customized Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy. Samsung reported up to 19% better CPU performance, 39% better NPU performance and 24% better GPU performance for its platform; those are Samsung’s own comparisons, not independent results against Apple’s chip.

The October 3 comparison reported iOS 27 on the iPhone and Android 17 on the Galaxy, which originally shipped with Android 16. It states that Samsung commits to seven major Android updates. For Apple, it describes support history as typically similar but does not establish an explicit support-duration promise for this iPhone model. Do not treat the historical characterization as a model-specific commitment; check each maker’s current policy if update lifespan is a deciding factor.

Are battery life and charging meaningfully different?

Apple says the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max offers up to 45 hours of video playback and up to 30 hours of typical use. Apple’s August 2026 tests used preproduction units and software; the typical-use figure uses a representative profile based on median iPhone-user values and a mix of active and passive use. Samsung’s product page claims 31 hours of video playback and up to 75% charge in around 30 minutes. These manufacturer figures use different methods, so they are not a direct battery-life contest.

TechRadar lists 60W wired and 25W wireless charging for both, but labels the iPhone’s 60W figure unofficial. Apple says fast wired charging requires a 60W-capable USB-C cable and a suitable USB Power Delivery 3.1/AVS adapter, sold separately. Samsung says its phone does not include a charger. Confirm the exact phone, cable and adapter compatibility before purchasing charging equipment.

Is either phone worth it?

At these prices, “worth it” depends on whether you will use the features that distinguish each model. Paying for an Ultra makes more sense if you expect to use the S Pen, Privacy Display, Android customization or its camera configuration. The iPhone’s higher storage ceiling and variable aperture may matter more if you want up to 2TB or Apple’s camera controls and ecosystem. Compare the specific storage tier and current local offer rather than relying on launch-era or dated list prices.

Neither phone is a universal upgrade for someone whose current device still meets their needs. Before switching platforms, also account for the watches, tablets, services, apps and accessories you already own; their compatibility and replacement cost can outweigh a small difference in phone pricing.
