What ACR does
Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) is technology a TV platform can use to identify content being watched. Roku describes its method this way: “Roku ACR generates an encrypted fingerprint from a sample of pixels on your screen.” It compares the fingerprint with a catalog to recognize programs viewed through streaming, antenna, or connected devices. Roku says its catalog does not identify unmatched personal videos. Other manufacturers may use different methods.

Depending on the platform, market, agreements, and your choices, viewing information may support viewing features, recommendations, audience measurement, or advertising. Disabling ACR or a related viewing-data setting reduces a particular kind of collection; it does not disable every kind of tracking or erase information already collected.
Turn off the setting on your TV
Roku TV or Roku Smart TV Experience
- Open Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience.
- Highlight Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) and press OK to disable it.
Roku’s support instructions were updated June 23, 2026. Roku says ACR is off by default until selected. If it was enabled, information collected while it was on remains retained after you disable it. Roku’s ACR and Smart TV Experience instructions.

LG smart TVs
LG says users can withdraw from agreements and turn off ACR in TV settings, but its September 2026 statement does not establish one menu sequence for every model. Look in your set’s privacy settings for the ACR option, and confirm the label and steps for your specific model and webOS version rather than relying on a universal path. LG also says processing and sharing depend on the feature used, agreements accepted, market, and user choices. LG’s privacy statement.
VIZIO OS and SmartCast
- On newer products, open All Settings > Privacy & Legal > Viewing Data.
- On some older TVs, look under All Settings > Admin & Privacy > Viewing Data.
- Turn off Viewing Data.
VIZIO says disabling Viewing Data does not affect TV performance or online services. Its policy distinguishes Viewing Data from Activity Data, which may still be collected. VIZIO’s privacy policy supplement.

What turning off ACR does—and does not—change
- It limits a defined category of viewing information. The scope depends on the platform’s setting and its description; do not assume one toggle covers every source or service.
- It may not stop other data collection. VIZIO says Activity Data may continue to be collected. FTC workshop material also notes that a basic privacy policy may still allow collection of information such as location or app choices even when ACR is off. FTC staff report on cross-device tracking.
- It does not necessarily turn off personalized advertising. VIZIO describes a separate Limited Ad Tracking option for its platform. That setting does not control advertising by third-party apps, which may tailor ads through their own relationship with you. VIZIO’s Limited Ad Tracking instructions.
- It does not remove past collection. Roku says information gathered while ACR was enabled remains retained after the setting is disabled.
If your TV uses another platform
The current verified menu paths here cover Roku and VIZIO; LG confirms that its TVs include an ACR control but does not publish one universal sequence in the reviewed statement. Current steps for Samsung, Amazon Fire TV, and Google TV are not established here, so do not assume a path or setting name. Search the TV’s privacy menu using the labels above, consult documentation for the exact model and software version, and read the setting’s description before changing it.
