The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max share Apple’s A20 Pro platform and new variable-aperture 48MP main camera; the main choice is size. The 6.3-inch Pro is the more compact, less expensive option, while the 6.9-inch Pro Max costs more and lasted longer in Tom’s Guide’s controlled battery test. Variable aperture adds useful control over light and background detail, but the familiar exterior makes this a more compelling upgrade for people who want that camera or the battery improvements than for anyone seeking a dramatic redesign.
What’s new in the iPhone 18 Pro series?
Apple announced both phones on September 9, 2026. Preorders opened September 12, with availability beginning September 18. The shared headline features are the A20 Pro chip, a next-generation vapor chamber, a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, and a smaller Dynamic Island. Apple lists black, silver, glacier, and burgundy finishes.

The exterior remains familiar. TechRadar describes an aluminum body and rear camera plateau carried over from the previous generation, with matching prior-generation dimensions but increased weight. The meaningful changes are largely inside: the camera aperture, thermal design, and battery claims.

How good is the iPhone 18 Pro camera?
The new 48MP Fusion Main camera can change aperture, giving photographers a practical way to adjust how much light enters and how much of a scene appears in focus. An open aperture admits more light and can create shallower depth of field; stopping down can retain more detail across foreground and background. Tom’s Guide describes four manual aperture choices and found the control relevant in portrait and scene examples.
Tom’s Guide found the cameras strong for everyday and low-light photography, while noting that Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra had an advantage at very long zoom. That distinction matters: variable aperture adds creative control, but it does not make one phone the best choice for every subject or focal length.

Apple also cites upgraded Photographic Styles and video features. IT Pro notes 4K video capture up to 120fps and stabilization, and flags a minimum video shutter-speed limitation. It also discusses the camera launch control and configurable Action button. Those reviewer observations may matter to specific video workflows; check the review details if shutter control is central to your work.
How long does the iPhone 18 Pro battery last?
In Tom’s Guide’s continuous 5G web-surfing test at 150 nits, the iPhone 18 Pro averaged 16 hours 17 minutes and the Pro Max averaged 18 hours 27 minutes. Under the same outlet’s test conditions, the iPhone 17 Pro averaged 15 hours 21 minutes and iPhone 17 Pro Max 17 hours 54 minutes. These are Tom’s Guide measurements, not promised runtimes: brightness, signal strength, apps, and usage change real-world battery life.

The results support choosing the Pro Max if endurance is a priority, though its larger body is part of the trade-off. Apple says the C2 modem uses 15% less energy than C1X while delivering faster uploads; this is Apple’s stated comparison, not an independent battery test.

Apple Intelligence and Siri AI availability
Apple says Apple Intelligence with iOS 27 is available on supported devices set to supported languages. At launch, Apple described Siri AI as rolling out in beta, initially in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish support coming in October. Availability depends on software rollout, language, and region; check Apple’s current feature-availability information for your location rather than assuming every feature is active on every device.
Is the iPhone 18 Pro worth it, and which model should you buy?
Choose iPhone 18 Pro if
- You want a more compact phone: its 6.3-inch display and 211g listed weight make it the smaller, lighter choice.
- You want the same A20 Pro and variable-aperture main-camera proposition as the Max for a $100 lower U.S. launch starting price.
- You prefer to spend less and do not need the Max’s larger display or longer result in Tom’s Guide’s battery test.
Choose iPhone 18 Pro Max if
- You value the 6.9-inch screen for viewing and working on a larger display.
- Battery endurance is a higher priority than one-hand comfort; it lasted longer in Tom’s Guide’s stated test.
- You are comfortable with the higher launch price and 249g weight reported by Tom’s Guide.
For owners of recent Pro iPhones, the upgrade case is strongest if variable aperture, the measured battery improvements, or the new software features solve a real need. Since the exterior remains familiar, appearance alone is a weaker reason to replace a recent model. Long-term durability, repairability, failure rates, and battery aging are not established by these early post-launch reviews.
